ELANCO Library Fall Fundraiser In Progress BY ANN MEAD ASH

osh Martin, president of the board of the ELANCO Library, is impressed with the way ELANCO director Heather Smith and her staff have handled what he refers to as “a strange year.” “It has been a challenging time, and we’ve been forced to do a lot of creative thinking, but Heather and the staff have really risen to the occasion,” said Martin. Among the steps the library took to continue to serve patrons are curbside pickup and appointments as regulations allowed and, eventually, semi-permanent plexiglass barriers when the library reopened. “They have gone above and beyond in terms of safety protocol,” said Martin. In spite of the pandemic, library use by the ELANCO community has been brisk. “In a normal year, we circulate about 150,000 items,” said Martin. “It’s amazing (how) many people utilized materials even with all the restrictions in place.” Martin reported that in the past few

months, with just curbside and appointment-only service, the library still circulated more than 5,000 items a month. “People are calling in and placing their to-go orders,” he said. “Our staff pulls the items and bags them, and people can have the materials they want without ever needing to get out of their car.” During this time of uncertainty, Martin noted that the dedication of those associated with the organization has not wavered. “We are really committed as a board, and certainly Heather and her staff (are committed) to continue to provide people with the materials and resources they need,” he said. Martin noted that the library serves an important role in the community, one that has only been heightened by COVID-19 restrictions. “There are people who really depend on the library for their information, and we want to make sure they can get it, especially during difficult times,” he said. “As more parents and students are becoming homeschoolers in a way they thought See ELANCO Library pg 9

Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.

In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. Get registered to vote. If you’re registered already, decide how you’ll vote. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania offers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

Running back John Dykie follows Bryce Mercer into the hole during Garden Spot’s 28-7, Section Three win over visiting Donegal on October 2.

With quarterback Jesse Martin compiling over 170 yards of offense and running back John Dykie grinding out 106 rushing yards, the Spartans earned their first win of the season on Friday, October 2, defeating Lancaster-Lebanon League foe Donegal 28-7 at New Holland. The Spartans improved to 1-1 in league play (1-2 overall). Martin ran for 99 yards and completed eight passes for 80 yards. His six-yard rushing touchdown put the Spartans on the scoreboard in the first quarter. Dykie made it in from four yards out in the second quarter. Walker Martin’s extra-point kicks made it 14-0 at the half. “The offensive line is coming into its own,” said head coach Matt Zamperini said. “The offense had 209 yards rushing with Jesse Martin and John Dykie both having very good nights.” Martin added another rushing touchdown in the third quarter and connected with Luke Nagle on a 21-yard touchdown pass in the fourth. Nagle had 33 receiving yards while Joel Martin grabbed three passes for 19 yards. “Also, kicker Walker Martin had a great night going 4-for-4 on PAT’s and kicking four of six kickoffs into the end zone for no returns,” added the coach. Donegal didn’t get on the board until the fourth quarter and Garden Spot up by four touchdowns. “Donegal had double back-toback 100-yard rushers in its first two games,” Zamperini noted. “Our defense held Donegal to 121 yards total offense only 81 rushing.” FIELD HOCKEY With three consecutive shutouts, the field hockey team has been climbing toward the top of the Section Three standings. The Spartans, who have outscored opponents 21-4 through six games, improved to 5-1 - one game behind Elco in the standings. They started October with these shutouts - 6-0 at McCaskey on Thursday October 1, 2-0 at Annville-Cleona on Saturday and 6-0 over Solanco on Tuesday afternoon. “We have been very happy with the way our team has been

playing,” said head coach Katy Eby. “They are learning to be patient on defense. We are working to limit our opponents’ opportunities and we’re taking advantage of ours in the offensive circle.” Erin Gonzalez, who had a hat trick against McCaskey, poured in a career best five goals in the Solanco match. She has scored in each of the Spartans’ six contests, including the 3-1 loss to Elco back on September 29. “Erin scored five goals against Solanco - career high for her,” Eby said. “She is on fire. We moved her to the forward line this year and the midfielders are doing a great job supporting the forwards going up the field. They are taking free hits in our offensive third, which is allowing us to take advantage in the circle. We’ve worked hard overall on getting our shots on the cage and it’s starting to pay off.” Gonzalez had an assist to go with her hat trick at McCaskey. Katherine Swatski netted one goal. Melanie Esh and Lacey McCallicher had one goal and one assist each while Amanda Leeland added with three assists. The defense was solid as Bryna Kelly recorded the first of her three straight shutouts in goal. The Saturday morning match at Annville was not a high-scoring one. Esh scored at the 1:22 mark of the first quarter and Gonzalez scored in the fourth while assists came from Lauren Horning and Amelia Mercado. Kelly recorded one save. Leeland had three more assists in the Solanco game and Horning added a fourth-quarter goal to support the five-goal

effort by Gonzalez. Swatski also dished out an assist to give Kelly (3 saves) offensive support. CROSS COUNTRY The Spartan runners competed at Lancaster Mennonite on Tuesday against Donegal and the host Blazers. In the girls’ race, Donegal dominated its two opponents, taking the top five positions, while the Spartans topped the Blazers 15-50. Nicole Kelch led Spot with a seventh-place finish at 23:19. Cloe Martin (23:23) and Amanda Coblentz (24:11) took eighth and ninth, respectively. Miryam Ambriz (25:14, 11th), Samantha Davis (26:33, 14th) and Bevalee Tshudy (27:54, 15th) helped the Spartans improve to 5-4. The boys’ team improved to 6-3 at LM. Zane Kauffman claimed fifth place for Garden Spot at 18:11. Josiah Martin earned seventh at 18:37. The quartet of Alex McFalls (18:56, 9th), Alan Krock (19:16, 10th) Dakota Cox (19:29, 11th) and Finn Wenrich (19:40, 13th) also placed. BOYS’ SOCCER The Spartans’ offense continued to show strength and confidence with a 5-0 victory at Solanco on Saturday morning, October 3. Four different goal scorers contributed while Nick Gleason added an assist. Joe Sharp sparked the offense with an early goal. Luke Streiner found the net a few minutes later. Sharp would go on to assist on two other goals. Sophomore Gage Bills made it 3-0 on a penalty kick. He would finish with two goals and an assist. Thomas Andress scored off a corner to cap the scoring.

“The defensive backfield and goalie Sam Armbruster booked their second shutout of the season,” head coach Ken Herr noted. “Andress’s play in the midfield and multiple shots on goal earned him ‘Man of the Match.’” GIRLS’ TENNIS In a Monday match with Elco, the girls’ tennis team came up short in its attempt for a second victory of the year. The Raiders prevailed 7-0 at New Holland. Natalie Wirta and Erika Chernovsky made things difficult for the Raiders, who improved to 71. At number two doubles, Elco’s Erin Etnoyer and Georgia Martin struggled to defeat the Spartan twosome 8-5. In singles competition Wirta put up a fight against Emily Light in a 6-4, 6-4 match. Chernovsky gave Martin a tough time in the first set of number three singles before Martin prevailed 6-4, 6-1. Garden Spot fell to 1-9 overall. GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL Garden Spot improved to 6-0, defeating league rivals Ephrata and Lampeter-Strasburg on Monday and Tuesday - both by 3-0 scores. At Ephrata, the Spartans edged the Mounts 26-24 in the second set but won the others convincingly (25-16, 25-11). Logan Martin delivered 16 kills and a block while Lucy Stern added four aces and 12 digs. Abby O’Neill distributed 31 assists. O’Neill had 16 assists, five digs and seven aces in Tuesday’s home win. Martin registered six kills and four blocks as Spot won 25-12, 25-15 and 25-17.

“West to Freedom,” was written prior to 2010. Moore called the 56-page story more of a novella or extended short story than a book. Set in northwest Arkansas, the tale follows Thomas Reynolds and his best friend, Daniel Russell, who was born into slavery. When Thomas learns Daniel is in danger of being sold, he and his father plan to help Daniel escape west to the Cherokee nation. “The story is totally fiction and the only thing I have ever done that directly involves slavery,” said Moore. Moore taught school for more than 40 years, and his students who were photographed for the cover art for “West to Freedom,” John Rivera as Daniel Russell and Thomas Ristine as Thomas Reynolds, are now grown. “Summer at Stewart Creek,” which is more than 100 pages, is based on campers Moore met at a camp on Cape Cod in 1979. “This book is totally unrelated to anything else I have done,” mused Moore. A model railroad enthusiast, who serves as vice president of the Short Line Club in Ephrata, Moore based the setting on the layout in his basement, using realistic-

looking photos at the ends of chapters. “All (the story) is imaginary,” said Moore, “including the Virginia and Truckee Railroad of West Virginia.” “Summer” is the story of 12-year-old Brett Tompkins who finds himself in West Virginia when his father, a banker, takes over the family logging business from Brett’s ailing grandfather. Brett makes new friends and has adventures in Snow Shoe. As he learns to enjoy life in his new home, he hopes to convince his mother to visit and come to love the place as he does. The cover art for “Summer” features Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania volunteer James Wunderlich of Nottingham as Brett in a photo taken at the Strasburg museum. A photo inside the book features James’ brother Andy as Jason Johnston, and his brother Paul portrays Adam Tyler. Moore will take part in a book signing at the Albatwitch Festival on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. “The Albatwich book signing event will be the pre-release launch for ‘Summer at Stewart Creek,’” said Moore, who added that the three boys whose photos were used in “Summer at Stewart Creek” will be there to sign copies of books purchased during the event. More information on the Albatwitch Festival may be found at www.albat witchday.com. Readers who would like to learn more about the books may visit www.jarthurmoore.com.

Bench Mark from pg 7 students) come in, they see the gym, but what they don’t see right away at the front of the gym are these two computers.” The computers are there because Bench Mark helps students with resume writing and job searching for both part-time and full-time jobs. “They walk right past (the computers), and that’s fine with us, but as we work with them (we) transition from ‘Let’s just exercise together’ to ‘Let’s talk about what you want to do.’” At the request of Lancaster’s probation department, Bench Mark launched Strength Based Skill Building (SBSB) in 2018. Transportation to the program is provided within a 12-mile radius. “A judge will look at a kid and say, ‘I think you will benefit from this type of fitnessbased mentoring,’” said Kiefer, who developed the sixmonth program that covers foundational principles including legal life skills, common sense money fundamentals, mindfulness to engage

focus, fitness, and what Kiefer calls “authentic communication.” “That’s teaching them to communicate in ways they haven’t before,” explained Kiefer. Bench Mark also offers a Student Leadership Program (SLP), which teaches students how to run the gym. The trainees meet weekly to learn to handle daily responsibilities and help students determine goals. “They have to show up at every meeting, commit to a regular work schedule, and be a resource to students,” said Kiefer. John Deslippe, who recently graduated from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, completed SLP and works at Bench Mark. He said that working there gives him a chance to give back. “When I was a student, it was an outlet with positive role models,” he said. “I learned how to work out and how to use working out as a way to blow off steam.” Bench Mark has planned an unusual fundraiser for Satur-

According to founder and executive director Will Kiefer, the design is intentional. “We filled the space with color because we want it to be energetic,” said Kiefer. “We want it to be something that for (students who participate) feels very special,” he added, noting that the organization serves those ages 14 to 24. Most students are referred by a probation officer, therapist, or guidance counselor. Kiefer added that many students who come to Bench Mark to exercise are often caring for younger siblings at home. “When they come here, they have a place of respite … just to be out and exercising,” he said. Kiefer keeps the fridge stocked, and there are videos and planned discussions. “Sometimes kids need a space that’s cool to connect with positive people,” he said. “We have almost everything a kid could want to do workout-wise.” However, according to Kiefer, Bench Mark is much more than a place to lift weights. “(When

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in the U.S. invites its supporters and the public to join a livestreamed celebration of its 100 years of ministry on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 6:50 p.m. Celebration 2020: MCC at 100 will include videos, storytelling, music, and a message from longtime MCC leader and pastor Leonard Dow of Philadelphia. The celebration also will include stories of MCC’s history told by storyteller Ken Sensenig, who is assistant director of MCC East Coast. Marcella Hostetler of Lancaster, who taught music in schools and directed music in churches for 30 years, is coordinating musical performances for the event in cooperation with a variety of musicians. This event replaces an in-

person, multi-day celebration that was originally scheduled for June in Lancaster County. That event was postponed due to the pandemic and is now a livestreamed service only. Participants can join the celebration at www.mcc.org/ celebration-2020. Video recordings of the event, subtitled in English and Spanish, will be posted at the same link a few days after the event. As the keynote speaker, Dow will reflect on the challenges MCC has experienced over the past 100 years and the strengths God developed in the organization as a result. With inspiration from Scripture, he will encourage MCC to use its best self to step boldly into the next century of ministry. Dow is a former MCC staff member and board leader. MCC began in 1920 when

groups of Mennonites and Mennonite Brethren formed a committee to provide food and other assistance to people affected by war and famine in southern Russia which is present-day Ukraine. Today, MCC provides humanitarian relief, encourages sustainable development, and strengthens peacebuilding initiatives in more than 50 countries. To coincide with the celebration, MCC is inviting congregations to receive a special offering to support MCC’s ministry. Congregations are welcome to plan offerings at their convenience. While the event has been slightly modified this year due to COVID-19, Conestoga Christian School (CCS) will hold its 47th annual chicken barbecue and auction on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16 and 17. This year, the barbecue dinner will be takeout only. Each dinner will include a half-chicken, applesauce, chips, a dinner roll and butter, a whoopie pie and a choice of water or lemonade. Half-chickens only will also be available. To order chicken barbecue tickets in advance, readers may visit www.conestogachristian.net/ auction2020. Dinners may be picked up in the school’s front parking lot from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 16. This year, drive-through dinner pickup will not be available at Conestoga Mennonite Church, located across from CCS. “We will turn our entire school parking lot into a fourlane drive-through, explained Michelle Parris, CCS admissions director. “We are trying to do everything as efficiently as possible. Also on Oct. 16, a gift certificate store will be open outside the school, and there will be homemade apple dumplings available for purchase. A live auction will be held on Oct. 17 from 9 to 11 a.m. It will take place outside under a tent behind the elementary school. “Masks will be required inside and if social distancing cannot be achieved outside, Parris noted. This year, there will be no alumni game, no children’s area and no food tent. “We downsized the amount of food we are serving. We will have a coffee area that will serve specialty coffees, cold drinks and our famous apple dumplings. They are made at the school on the Wednesday before (the auction) by parent volunteers, said Parris. The live auction will feature a selection of items, experiences, artwork, quilts and homemade jams and yogurt. Auction highlights will include a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, a John Deere tractor, 150 gallons of heating oil and two-night stays at local inns, including Brownstone Colonial Inn Bed and Breakfast and Laurel Springs Guest House. In addition, each class at the school has designed a themed basket for the auction. Basket themes will include “The Great Outdoors and “Backyard

Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC), Keystone Chapter recently announced that the 2020 Craft Professional of the Year Award in carpentry has been presented to Mark Rineer of Lancaster, an employee of Wohlsen Construction Company in Lancaster. Award criteria for the Craft Professional of the Year Award includes the nominee’s mastery of skills, safety performance, job site performance and productivity, leadership, and on-thejob body of work. Approximately 90% of the award recipient’s daily job duties must include daily use of tools or equipment, and the recipient must currently possess a journeyperson level designation. Rineer is a member of ABC Keystone’s 2015 graduating apprenticeship class. As an apprentice at ABC, he competed in the 2015 ABC National Craft Competition and won the gold medal in carpentry. Rineer is also a two-time winner of Wohlsen’s Craftsman of the Year Award. He earned these awards and accolades with his craftsmanship, commitment to safety, quality control, and strong leadership abilities, noted ABC Keystone. ABC Keystone Apprenticeship & Training Trust (KATT) also made an announcement regarding the graduation of 92 craft professionals in seven

apprenticeship trades. These trades are carpentry, construction craft laborer, electrical, heavy equipment operator, HVAC, plumbing, and sheet metal. The ABC KATT manages and operates nine Pennsylvania-registered apprenticeship programs sponsored by ABC Keystone. Several apprentices won the High Achiever Award for earning the highest grade point average in their trades. The local recipients include Kyle Armer of Willow Street, heavy equipment operator; Jeremy Harting of Denver, electrical; and Maria Sholly of Lititz, plumbing. The graduating apprentices earned a certificate of completion from ABC KATT celebrating classroom and hands-on training.
