Third Trunk or Treat planned at Pine Grove BY ANN MEAD ASH
A barrel train and more than 20 decorated trunks will be part of the third annual Pine Grove Church Trunk or Treat.
“It’s fun,” exclaimed Jaiden Brandt, associate pastor of ministries with Pine Grove Church, of the Trunk or Treat event that the church has held annually since 2021. “People come in and register, and then they funnel through all the trunks,” Brandt said, adding that in the parking lot, attendees enjoy entertainment, and free food before heading home. “The point of the event is to engage with our community.” This year’s Trunk or Treat will involve more than 20 trunks lined See Pine Grove Church pg 3

Brandt noted that the two-hour event brings a total of about 800 people to the location with nearly 150 of those being Pine Grove volunteers. Brandt emphasized that the event is positive and family oriented. “ We enjoy bringing the community together for lots of fun fall activities in a safe environment,” he said. Readers who would like more information or to register ahead of the event may visit www.pinegrovechurch.us or call the church office at 717-445-5136.
The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley (HSCV) will offer a program, “My Neighbor’s Secret,” on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E. Main St., Ephrata. Attendees will hear the story of a Lancaster resident who fought in World War I, then was interned in a Nazi detention camp, lost family members to the Holocaust, and was forced to leave his homeland because of his faith. The program is free and open to the public. The parking lot and entrance are located in the alley to the rear of the church. For more information, visit www.cocal icovalleyhs.org or call 717733-1616.

Deb Burns, one of the organizers of the annual Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church bazaar, has a room set aside for visiting authors this year. Last year, George Cooper, author of the recently published book “Joseph of Nazareth: A Story of Uncommon Love and Faith,” joined in the event to autograph copies of his book. This year, four more authors have signed on, along with more than 20 crafters and home-based business representatives to enhance the offerings of the event. The 2023 holiday bazaar will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster.
According to Burns, among the many crafters will be those who sell jewelry, dog scarves, crocheted items, wood crafts, handmade note cards and greeting cards, wreaths, candles, repurposed wine bottles, and handcrafted bags. Home-based business vendors will sell Avon products, items from Pampered Chef, baskets, Discovery Toys, Tupperware, and Thirty-One Gifts. Each of the vendors will donate an item for the Chinese auction. Winners of the Chinese auction will be announced at 2 p.m. In addition to Cooper, authors will include Shelleen Weaver, known for her Fruit Fables series, which explore the Fruits of the Spirit using animal characters to teach lessons to children and adults.

Rotary Club announces name change The Rotary Club of New Holland announced that it has officially changed its name to the Rotary Club of Eastern Lancaster County. The name change was approved from the club’s local district, District 7390, and Rotary International. Intending to reflect its true service area, which extends beyond the New Holland borough, the club believes the new name will appeal to a wider audience as it begins to explore ways to grow its membership. According to club presi-
dent Trevor Reed, the New Holland club was originally chartered in 1944 and has a rich history in the community. He said that the name change is not meant to dishonor the service of the original club members. Rather, the current membership acknowledges their service and believes its predecessors would approve of the name change as part of an effort to remain relevant to the community. Dave prefers Poe Valley State Park, near State College, because it is remote and off the grid. Whalen’s favorites include the Kinzua Bridge State Park and the Washington Crossing Historic Park near Yardley in Bucks County. Sarah said she would recommend the experience to other families. “ Whatever your age, you can explore and see what the state has to offer,”
said Sarah. “Pennsylvania is diversified. It has mountains, plains, cities, rural areas, so you get a bit of everything.” Next, the family is looking forward to retracing its steps to the places it “liked the most.” On the list is the Laurel Highlands and Potter County. “Whalen is happy to go wherever,” said Dave. Sarah called getting the last stamp a “bittersweet” experience, noting that making family memories was the best part of the experience. “We wanted to share it,” she said. “Pennsylvania is such a great state because you have a little bit of everything.”

The loss of a baby affects a family for a lifetime, and care and support are needed well beyond the immediate time of loss. People who provide that care, whether in a professional or personal capacity, can benefit from attending “A Journey of a Lifetime,” an in-person perinatal conference sponsored by Share of Lancaster. The conference will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster. It will present information for people in the medical field as well as therapists and others who have touched the lives of families that have lost a baby. “It’s been a while since Share had an in-person conference like this one,” said Dr. Serena Wu, who is a maternal fetal medicine physician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the executive director of Share. “To have a conference that is pulling in nationally recognized speakers on this subject matter is unique.” Highlights of the “Journey of a Lifetime” conference will include morning keynote speaker Dr. Robert Silver of University of Utah, who has spent more than 20 years researching stillbirth and pregnancy loss. Afternoon sessions and speakers will feature a keynote address by Joanna Cole of CHOP, who has developed perinatal palliative and bereavement care programs. “The first half of the day will focus on the medical realm, and the second half will concentrate of the psychosocial realm,” Wu explained. A variety of panels will be featured, led by experts in the field. The conference is open to anyone who provides care or is affected by pregnancy loss, she noted, adding that it also provides continuing education credit for healthcare workers. “Part of Share of Lancaster’s mission is education and to bring awareness,” Wu said. “October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, so it’s timed with that. The theme is ‘Past, Present and Future’: Where have we been? Where are we now, and where are we going?”

Mennonite history lecture posted Martindale Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata, will host a discussion of the history of Mennonites who immigrated to Lancaster County during Colonial times. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, at the Martindale Fellowship Center and is sponsored by the Swiss Pioneer Preservation Associates, a nonprofit organization. The key speaker will be Allan A. Garber, who lives in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and is the author of “To God Alone the Honor: The Pioneer Immigrants of Lancaster County.” He is a lawyer, an amateur historian and a genealogist who has been conducting research on this topic for over 40 years. Also speaking will be Amos B. Hoover, a historian from Ephrata and the author of numerous books, including “German Language: Cradle of Our Heritage,” and John L. Ruth, a historian from Harleysville and the author of “Maintaining the Right Fellowship” and “The Earth Is the Lord’s.” A key aspect of Garber’s research is the investigation of primary source documents, such as wills, deeds, property tax records, Orphans Court records, written diaries, and family Bible records. An unusual source of primary information is the diary written by Moravian missionary Georg Hantsch, who visited many Mennonite homes in Warwick, Manor, Conestoga and Earl townships in 1748. The diary, which describes many scenes of everyday life in Colonial Pennsylvania, has been annotated for the first time by Garber. Garber will also discuss the controversy about the presence of Hans Herr in Lancaster County, as well as some faithpromoting experiences of some of the pioneer Mennonite families. His presentation will include photographs of fraktur and other rare documentary records. The program is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted to cover the cost of the event. For more information, contact Carl Garber at 717568-8385.
