Church Invites Community To Fall Celebration By Ann Mead Ash

Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community has held a trick-or-treat alternative for more than a decade. According to Shannon Martin, one of the organizers of the upcoming Fall Celebration, the outreach is a natural extension of the church’s mission. “As a church, we are always looking for a way to serve and better our community,” said Martin. “This event is just one way we can do that.” This year’s Fall Celebration will be held at the church, 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31. The event will include a variety of activities for young children, middle-schoolers, and teenagers, as well as adults. Children’s games and activities that will be available inside the church will include cornhole, a football toss game, a

duck pond, a golf putt game, and a lollipop toss, along with face painting. “Our (game) prizes will include a variety of small toys, glow sticks, erasers, lollipops, stickers, and super balls,” said Martin. Outside the church, a bounce rush obstacle course and bounce castle will be set up. “The bounce rush obstacle course was very popular last year, especially with the older children,” recalled Martin. “The younger ones really enjoyed the bounce castle.” Other activities will include a hayride and a corn dig. Three campfires will be burning, and music will be played. Free food available outside will include hot dogs, french fries, soft pretzels, chocolate chip cookies, popcorn, ice cream, candy, snack items, and hot and cold beverages. Martin noted that the Auntie Anne’s soft pretzels are one of the most popular items among those served each year. See Fall Celebration pg 8

Library Board Seeks New Members

Working to organize the annual Fall Celebration at Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community are (from left) Ashley Martin, Shannon Martin, Amy Sauder, Barbara Watts, and Carla Shirk. The event, which will be held at the church on Oct. 31 beginning at 6:30 p.m., will feature games, candy, and more for children and adults.

Musical Events Slated At Trinity

By Ann Mead Ash

The ELANCO Library board of trustees is looking for a few good members. Currently, the board, which calls for nine participants, stands at eight and will be down to seven at the end of the year. The library, which is located at 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland, serves the children, teenagers, and adults of the ELANCO area. According to board member Hallie Martyniuk, area residents from a variety of backgrounds are welcome to apply. “We are looking for diversity,” said Martyniuk. “We would embrace seniors (who want to volunteer) and younger people. We need people who bring different skills and talents.” Board member Jim Costello explained the term requirements for ELANCO. “Members have three-year terms, so we are looking for folks willing to serve at least three years,” he said, noting that the term limit is two See Library pg 5

Trinity Lutheran Church in New Holland will be the site of a number of musical presentations in the coming months, including a Polka Mass, a Community Afternoon of Music, a Christmas on Main handbell event, and a visit from The Lancaster Chamber Singers. Heather Smith, ELANCO library director, is proud of the book bike she uses to deliver books to various community locations. Smith is looking for a few more area residents to become members of the library board of trustees by submitting a note of interest by Nov. 22.

By Ann Mead Ash

Linda Krick, music director at Trinity Lutheran Church, 221 E. Main St., New Holland, wants to share several upcoming musical presentations at the church with the community. Krick has

endeavored to create presentations that involve singers and instrumentalists of a variety of ages. On Sunday, Nov. 10, Trinity will hold musical events in both the morning and the afternoon. In the morning, at 10:30 a.m., the Rev. Glenn Beard will See Musical Events pg 3

HOPE Breakfast from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash

In describing the concept behind this year’s HOPE Breakfast, Brian Boycan, regional representative with HOPE International, turned to a parable. In the parable, Christ tells of a man who is hosting a banquet and invited many guests who refused to attend. The man then sent his servants into the streets to invite any who would come and join in the celebration. “Christ said when you have a banquet … invite those who can’t pay you back,” noted Boycan. “That’s what we’re called to do. We’re not in it for people to recognize us or return the favor. We want to help folks that nobody else has believed in.” HOPE International, which was founded in 1998, is a Lancasterbased nonprofit that strives to empower clients through basic business training to help them start their own businesses. “Investing in Dreams” is the theme of this year’s buffet-style breakfast, which will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Friday, Nov. 22, from 7 to 9 a.m. As it was last year,

in its first year of existence. HOPE had loaned out $161 million by 2008, and in the last 10 years, $1.36 billion has been loaned. HOPE now serves 965,000 clients in 16 countries. “I did the math,” noted Boycan. “If all of our clients stood hand-in-hand, it would take us from Lancaster to Jacksonville, Fla.” Further, Boycan noted, “If you laid $1.36 billion dollar bills end-to-end, they would go around the world five times.” Boycan thinks those who attend the breakfast will have opportunities to learn from the experience. “We think it will be an inspiring morning,” he said. “All of us have the opportunity to believe in others where some may not see their potential. That’s what HOPE is about, and (at the breakfast), we hope to inspire people to believe in what we’re doing.” Boycan recalled that the 2018 breakfast was held on a morning when the area received a surprise snowfall of six inches. This year, he hopes for better weather and to see 300 or more people attend the event. Readers who would like to learn more about the breakfast may visit www.hopeinternational.org/lancasterbreakfast. There is no cost to attend the breakfast; however, reservations must be made by Friday, Nov. 15. Individuals may register by calling 717-464-3220, ext. 554, or emailing Jbeachy@hope international.org

this year’s breakfast will be held on the same day as the Extraordinary Give, Lancaster County’s largest day of online giving. Peter Greer, president and CEO of HOPE, will speak on the topic of “Investing in Dreams.” Greer received a degree in international business from Messiah College. He also holds a master’s in political and economic development from the Harvard Kennedy School. He has worked internationally as a microfinance adviser. He is the author of several books, including “Mission Drift.” In addition to Greer’s talk, the breakfast will feature a panel discussion, a presentation Boycan noted that HOPE has wanted to hold for some time. “We will have a panel of three regional kingdom-minded entrepreneurs who will answer the question ‘ Who believed in you?’” explained Boycan. “Most successful business people didn’t get there by themselves.” The three entrepreneurs will be Andrew Samuel, founder, chairman, and CEO of LinkBank; David Millary, president of EDUPlus International Inc.; and Crystal Weaver, Lancaster-based entrepreneur and co-founder and COO of The Commons Co. and co-owner of Passenger Coffee Roasters, Prince Street Café, and Blue Line Lancaster. Boycan believes the panel discussion will exemplify HOPE’s mission. “That’s what those people (who believed in) the entrepreneurs (did for them),” he said. “They invested in them. That’s what we do. We reach out to people who are underserved and marginalized and vulnerable, and we believe in them.” HOPE provided $5,000 in loans

Musical Events from pg 1 direct his band, the Heidelberg Brass, in a celebration of the Polka Mass. The Polka Mass was developed by Beard and first played for the 25th anniversary of his ordination, held at the church on May 17, 2015. Since then, the Heidelberg Brass Band has performed the Polka Mass in a number of locations in central Pennsylvania. Also on Nov. 10 at 4 p.m., a Community Afternoon of Music, featuring The Hostetter Family, the Garden Spot Village Voices, and Trinity’s choirs, will be held. The hourlong concert will be based on spirituals and familiar hymns and will intersperse chorales with congregational

singing. Opportunities to donate will be offered to help defray costs. The concert will begin with Josh Martin and Vicki Hartman singing a duet, followed by the Trinity Sunday School Singers presenting “This Little Light of Mine.” After a congregational hymn, The Hostetter Family, consisting of up to 15 singers, will sing “I’m on My Way Home” and “Springtime in Glory.” A second congregational hymn will follow. The Trinity Lutheran senior choir will sing several numbers, including “Standing in the Need of Prayer,” “I Want Jesus to Walk With Me,” “Wade in the Water,”

and “I Love to Tell the Story.” The choir will be followed by the congregation singing “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” The Garden Spot Village Voices have selected “River in Judea” and “All Night, All Day” for the concert. When they have finished, they will join the Trinity choir to sing “ W hen the Saints Go Marching In.” Krick has arranged for clarinet, trombone, and piano to accompany the pieces. On Saturday, Dec. 7, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., during Christmas on Main, the church will host visitors in the fellowship hall. The new handbell choir under the direction of Gloria Oberkehr will

play, and light refreshments will be served. A display of manger scenes, coordinated by Carol Hagan, will be available for attendees to view during the drop-in event. On Saturday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m., the church will host The Lancaster Chamber Singers, a group of up to 35 auditioned vocalists. The group has been providing quality performances of choral masterpieces since 1978. A nominal fee will be charged to attend. The church is handicappedaccessible, and parking is available. Readers who want to know more about the events may visit www.trinitynewholland.org or call 717-354-4976.

will feature food and more than 20 vendors selling craft items and products offered by homebased businesses. Among the many vendors at the bazaar will be those that sell makeup, personal care items, cooking utensils and accessories, children’s books, food mixes, and brand-name bags. Crafters will sell jewelry, dog scarves, crocheted items, wood crafts, and handmade note cards and greeting cards. One crafter will bring clothing for 18-inch dolls, quilted bags, and aprons to sell. Each of the vendors will donate an item for the Chinese auction. Winners of the Chinese auction will be announced at 2 p.m.

Organizers plan to offer both breakfast and lunch foods for purchase. Individual breakfast casseroles made with potatoes, egg, ham or bacon, and cheese, along with coffee, will be sold for breakfast. Sandwiches, hot dogs, and chicken corn soup will be offered for lunch. Chicken corn soup will be sold by the bowl to eat at the bazaar or by the quart to take out. A variety of baked goods will be available as well. Margaret Sensenig, who is organizating the bazaar with Betty Snyder and others, said the committee members hope the sale will raise $2,000 for local organizations such as TTC/Potter’s House and Conestoga Valley

Christian Community Services. Readers who have questions about the event may call 717-9519717 for additional information.

Bazaar from pg 1 In the past, the mission committee of Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church has sent church members to perform mission work in Jerusalem, Guatemala, and Waxhaw, N.C., the home of JAARS, Wycliffe Bible Translators, and SIL International. This year, when the church holds its annual bazaar, the funds that are raised will be designated for local ministries and organizations. The 2019 holiday bazaar will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster. The bazaar

Orthodox Group Will Host Event

The Eastern Lancaster County Orthodox Fellowship will host a speaker event on Nov. 13 at Faith Church in Lancaster. the lighter side of Orthodoxy. The Eastern Lancaster Orthodox Fellowship is an opportunity for all people, Orthodox Christian and non-Orthodox Christian alike, to have prayer, fellowship, and education about the Orthodox faith. The group has met since October 2017 on the second and

fourth Tuesdays of each month. The group is sponsored by St. John Chrysostom Antiochian Orthodox Church in York under the spiritual guidance of Father Peter Pier and the blessing of His Grace Bishop Thomas of the Antiochian Orthodox Dioceses of Charleston, Oakland, and the Mid-Atlantic.

Although the event is free and open to all, attendees are encouraged to register by Friday, Nov. 1, by visiting www.elc-ortho doxy.org. For more information about the Eastern Lancaster Fellowship, readers may contact Jason Flowers at 610-405-6633 or visit the website.

The Eastern Lancaster County Orthodox Fellowship will host a speaking event on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 6:30 p.m. at Faith Church, 2124 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. Father Joseph Huneycutt of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese will speak on the ancient church and how it applies to America today. The public is welcome to attend and learn about Orthodoxy. Light refreshments will be served. Huneycutt is the pastor at St. Joseph Orthodox Church in Houston, Texas, and serves the Department of Missions and Evangelism of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese. He was born and reared as a Southern Baptist, educated as an Episcopalian, and converted to Orthodoxy in the 1990s. He is the author of several publications, including “We Came, We Saw, We Converted” and “One Flew Over the Onion Dome.” He also published the podcast titled “Orthodixie,” which focuses on

“Trolleys From Lancaster to Terre Hill,” an informational lecture, will be held at Martindale Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata, on Thursday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m. Herb Fischer will discuss how the trolley system took the place of the stage coach. He will also explain how the trolley service first began in Lancaster when the stage coach ran between Lancaster and Terre Hill. On Jan. 16, 1900, the

Conestoga Traction Company was organized. Later called the Conestoga Transportation Company and a predecessor to the Red Rose Transit Authority, it operated trolleys throughout the county. At the height of its service in 1913, 40 trolleys ran through the city alone, serving 12 million passengers annually. By 1917, there were 38 different trolley companies serving southeastern Pennsylvania.

A trip from Terre Hill to Lancaster took only one hour and 15 minutes, which was a quick trip in those days. The trolley line came across Weaverland Valley, crossed the Conestoga Creek, and entered Terre Hill between the present day park and the cemetery. It met West Main Street along what is now Conestoga Street. A terminal shed protected passengers and freight from the weather while they waited for the next scheduled

trolley. By advertising free trolley fares, merchants from Lancaster would entice Terre Hill residents to travel to Lancaster for their shopping needs. On April 24, 1932, trolley service from Terre Hill and Blue Ball was terminated due to the popularity of automobiles. The trolley was no longer competitive. Everyone is welcome to attend the lecture. Admission is free, though donations will be accepted.

help new board members become acclimated. Martyniuk listed the responsibilities of board members, which include attending and participating in all board meetings, reading board minutes and other materials sent out before meetings, and becoming informed about all phases of library operation. Board members must also serve on committees as assigned by the board president, lend expertise and leadership to the board for

the good of the library, be informed of library activities, help secure adequate funding for the library, and participate in fundraising activities. “Each trustee will bring to the board certain strengths, skills, talents, and personal experience, which uniquely serve the library,” said Martyniuk. “Expert knowledge in a professional or technical discipline is valuable. The board should represent a broad spectrum of community

interests, occupations, and areas and embrace diverse viewpoints to help the library serve the total community.” Costello added that the board has been looking for members with certain qualifications. “(We are) particularly interested in candidates who have experience, education, or interest in the areas of fundraising, education, youth services, and small business or farming,” he said. Those considering applying should understand that board members are subject to child protective laws. “They are required to obtain criminal history from the (Pennsylvania) State Police and the child abuse history clearance from the (Pennsylvania) Department of Human Services,” said Costello. Interested candidates should send a short note including their experience, skills, and interest in the position to library director Heather Smith at hsmith@elancolibrary.org by Friday, Nov. 22. A resume may also be included. Candidates will be contacted for an interview. Readers who would like to know more about the library may visit https://elancolibrary.org.

Fall Celebration from pg 1

R049670

“The Bread to Man” is an educational school that was created in October 2010 to meet the social needs of the Pas bwa dom community. We have steadily been growing in number for the last nine years and continue to see progress academically. This year it started with 210 students and 30 employees. Some of the biggest problems of the school are parents not having the sufficient funds, keeping our professors paid, and having a functional school building. We are looking for sponsors to help with the school. Pray with us that God would provide for the school.

This year, organizers have partnered with the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank to help stock the bank’s shelves. “There will be a table set up for food donations,” said Martin. “(This is) another way we as a community can work together to help serve each other.” A small committee works to put the event together, but about 150 volunteers help coordinate the trick-or-treat alternative on the night it occurs. “This event counts on church members to come together to serve the community,” said Martin, who

added that many church members also donate food items such as cookies and candy. Martin said that approximately 1,200 people attended the 2018 Fall Celebration, and organizers expect about the same number this year. “ We have always had a great response from the community for this event,” commented Martin. “It provides a safe and fun alternative to trick-or-treating.” In the case of inclement weather, readers are encouraged to visit www.weaverland.org for information.

There will be a visual presentation of the work in Ghana. R049470

Garden Spot played host to Cocalico in a Section Two clash on Friday night, October 11. It was a game against an Eagles squad fighting to stay in the hunt for District Three playoffs while Garden Spot was looking to notch its first win. The Eagles used a couple of big plays in the first quarter and a 90-yard punt return in the second stanza to take a 34-0 lead before Garden Spot put up six points on Jesse Martin’s 10yard pass to Joel Martin. Ronald Zahm was the Cocalico deep man, who took a punt at his own 10-yard line and returned it 90 yards for a TD. The Eagles’ Noah Palm had a 69-yard rushing touchdown and one from 18 yards out. Garden Spot scored again in the fourth quarter on John Dykie’s twoyard run but it wasn’t enough. The Eagles finished on top, 54-13. The Spartans’ ground game was shouldered by Dykie, who had 28 rushing yards, Ryler Gillenwatter, who

pleting 10 of his 21 attempts for 167 yards, no interception and the one TD toss. Though Dykie didn’t lead the team in rushing, his pass receiving abilities were put to work. He came through with four catches for 78 yards while Ethan good hauled in four of Martin’s passes for 67 yards. Martin’s 10-yard TD catch and Aiden McCloud’s 12-yard reception accounted for the rest of Spot’s passing gains. The Eagles improved to 3-1 in the league (6-2 overall) while Garden Spot fell to 0-5 (0-8 overall). GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL Garden Spot was cruising through its 2019 regular season, defeating one L-L League opponent after another, including a tough 3-2 defeat of Elizabethtown on the road back on September 24. The only blemish on their record was a close 3-2 loss to Ephrata earlier that same month. Elizabethtown? The Bears were earning their share of victories, maul-

ish, the match deciding the Section Two championship came down to the final match and it was perfectly scripted as the Bears and Spartans clashed at Garden Spot on Wednesday, October 16. So, a pair of teams that were 10-1 in the L-L League played four sets after which the Section Two champion was decided - Garden Spot. The Spartans won 3-1, coming back from a 19-13 deficit in the second set in fact, to earn the crown. The Spartans (14-2 overall) topped the Bears 25-15 in the first set. They wrapped up their comeback with a 25-21 margin of victory. The Bears kept battling in the third set and came through with crucial late points for a 25-22 win. The third set found the teams tied at 22-22 before the Bears took the lead. In the fourth set, Garden Spot cooled off E-town’s late comeback to post a 25-23 win. In the high-scoring tussle, Abby

digs while Elyse Mundorff led the squad with 11 kills. Also finishing with three service aces were Ally King and Hallie Butler. The Octarara Braves finished second in Section Three and earned a spot against Garden Spot in the league playoffs. CROSS COUNTRY At the L-L League Championship race on Tuesday, October 15, at Ephrata Middle School, the Garden Spot girls’ team finished 16th in the team standings while the boys’ were 19th. The Cedar Crest squad captured the boys’ team title while Hempfield won it in the girls Cloe Martin claimed 54th place in the girls’ race with a time of 22:09.7. Amanda Coblentz placed 96th (24:03.2) and Samantha Davis (24:48.8) was 112th. Adam Horning (58th, 18:04.2), Zane Kauffman (64th, 18:18.6), Dakota Cox (118th, 19:11.4) and Finn Wenrich (124th, 19:22.3) were the top runners for the boys.

On Sept. 15, the Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints met for its semiannual stake conference. At this meeting, former Stake President Conrad Knudson and his two counselors, David Kenley and Allen

Zerbe, were released from their callings in the stake presidency, and a new presidency was called. Replacing Knudson as the Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake president is Brad Smith of Lititz. Serving as his first counselor is president Allen Zerbe of Quarryville,

formerly the second counselor. The new second counselor is president Byron Wilson of York. The stake president is also assisted by a high council, consisting of 12 men. Two visiting church leaders attended the conference to oversee the selection of the new stake presidency and to address the large congregation assembled for the conference. General Authority Seventy Elder Richard J. Maynes of Utah and Area Seventy Elder Kevin E. Calderwood of Northern Virginia set apart the new presidency, and they delivered speeches to the audience. When a stake holds a conference, it lasts two days with leadership meetings on Saturdays and talks by church leaders and selected members of the various congregations, along with special musical numbers on both days. All wards (larger congregations) and branches (smaller congregations) in a stake meet together in one building on Stake Conference

Sunday for approximately two hours. All nine units of the stake convened at the stake center, 1136 Sunwood Lane, Lancaster, to learn more about Jesus Christ. The congregations included Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Lancaster, Lititz, Shrewsbury, West York, and York Wards along with two smaller branches - the Columbia and Dover branches. The nine units make up a stake, which will be led by the new stake president and his two counselors; Smith will preside over all of Lancaster and York counties’ Latter-day Saints. The Church’s Newsroom describes a stake president as “the lay leader of a stake, which is a geographic subdivision similar to a Catholic diocese.” Serving as a volunteer, usually for a period of approximately nine years, the stake president oversees Church programs and stake members in their efforts to follow Jesus Christ. He also oversees the activities of the bishops or ward leaders.

Grassland FFA Members Compete At Fair Grassland FFA members recently participated in the New Holland Farmers Fair. To participate in the livestock shows, FFA members choose a livestock species to buy, raise, show, and then sell to market or to return back to a breeding herd. These students become entrepreneurs who take full ownership and responsibility for their animals and complete project books, including writing a project plan, journaling time spent with the animal, and writing detailed financial entries. At the New Holland Fair, the students compete for the title of overall Grand or Reserve Champion. Animals are judged alongside entries of other species by 4-H and FFA members. Grassland FFA was represented at the swine show by Olivia Bramm, William Hartman, Madison Myers, Tate Myers, and

Cheyenne Martin and in the goat show by Hosanna Hoover and Cheyenne Martin. Natalie Apgar and Timothy Martin showed sheep. Participants experienced a variety of livestock successes. Tate Myers’ pig was selected as the overall Grand Champion market swine, and Cheyenne Martin’s pig was selected as the Reserve Champion pig. Hosanna Hoover showed the R.D. Herr Scholarship goat. The R.D. Herr Scholarship is presented to a Grassland FFA senior who plans to major in agriculture education or an animal science-related field at the postsecondary level and who has shown livestock through the FFA. Dr. Robert Herr, a retired Grassland FFA adviser and agriculture teacher, donates a Boer goat and buddy goat to a student who is chosen through an applica-

tion process in the spring and assists in supervising the project until the livestock sale at the fair. The proceeds from the sale of the R.D. Herr Scholarship goat supply the fund, with a percentage also being given to the student who showed the goal. FFA members helped tabulate, make announcements, take photographs, distribute awards, and set up and tear down pens. These helpers were Natalie Apgar, Robert Ford, Andrew Horst, Jack McCarty, Daniel Horning, Kara Martin, Allison Zimmerman, Kendell Moats, Hunter Weaver, Timothy Martin, Jan Martin, and the members of the Agriculture 1 classes. On Friday of the New Holland Farmers Fair week, Grassland FFA alumni, FFA members’ parents and guardians, and retired Grassland FFA advisers and agriculture

teachers helped to set up and conduct the annual Safe Tractor Driving Event. This competition is based on the National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Program, which is a project of Hazardous Occupations Safety Training in Agriculture (HOSTA). The event consists of a written exam, parts identification, backing up a wagon into a set space, and driving through an obstacle with a spreader attachment. This event is a qualifier for the Regional Safe Tractor Driving Event held at Manheim Fair the following week. The members competing are split into a senior and a junior class based on their age, seniors being age 16 and older and juniors being age 15 or younger. This year, the competitors in the senior division were Olivia Bramm, Madelynn Sasso, and Luke Shirk, and the junior division competitors

Hey Kids - Win Cash!*

were William Hartman, Timothy Martin, and Hunter Weaver. Due to partners that donated equipment, the members were able to practice operating the equipment and the attachments daily during and after school. Equipment donors included CNH Industrial, PowerPro Equipment, Pequea Machines, Deer Country Equipment, and the Eberly family. The regional qualifiers in the senior division were Madelynn Sasso, first place, and Luke Shirk, second place, and in the junior division were Hunter

Weaver, first place, and Timothy Martin, second place. Grassland FFA’s participation in the New Holland Farmers Fair originally consisted of competition in the sheep, goat, and swine show and later included the Safe Tractor Driving Contest for high school students. These events have attracted many participants from the Grassland FFA program, which seeks to develop students who adhere to the FFA motto, “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve.”

Grassland FFA member Hosanna Hoover (front) showed the R.D. Herr Scholarship goat at the New Holland Farmers Fair. She was commended by her buyers from Godd’s Livestock and Sensenig’s Feed Mill.

Starting in 2020, the Pennsylvania Food Code will require that the person in charge of a food service operation be a certified food protection manager, and such a person must be on-site at all times during operating hours. That means at least one employee on each shift must become certified. To help food establishments meet this requirement, Penn State Extension will offer the ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course at multiple locations across the state. The in-person trainings, taught by certified ServSafe instructors, will help participants learn how to prevent contamination of food by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling, and serving food, as well as proper methods of sanitizing food service facilities. Penn State Extension will hold two ServSafe Food Safety Manager Courses in November at the Lancaster Extension in the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The evening course will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, and Thursday, Nov. 14. The certification exam will be on Monday, Nov. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. Additionally, a daytime course will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov.13, from 9 to 11 a.m. The certification exam will be on Nov. 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. After completing the course and passing the multiple-choice exam with a 75% or higher score, participants will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate. This certification is good for five years. There is a course fee, which includes a copy of the most recent edition of the “ServSafe Manager” book, exam, answer sheet, and learning materials. For further information about the course, readers may contact Stacy Reed at 717-394-6851. Registrations can be made at https://extension.psu.edu/serv safe or by calling 877-345-0691.

Students Attend Summer Latin Camp The Lancaster Center for Classical Studies recently held its 13th annual summer Latin camp at its facilities in Lancaster. The camp, a week of outdoor reading, exploration, and discussion, culminating in an indoor shadow-screen dramatic performance put on by the students themselves, goes by the name Latin on the Lawn and Greek on the Green. This year’s theme was “Theseus: The Labyrinthian Layers of His Adventures and Misadventures.” In preparation for their performance at Saint James Episcopal Church in Lancaster, students

spent a week examining sources found in history, legend, fable, and folktale concerning the ancient Athenian hero Theseus and Jack of “Jack and the Beanstalk.” The participants, all students in the Latin and Greek courses of The Lancaster Center for Classical Studies during the regular school year, explored tales reaching from the pre-historical IndoEuropean oral traditions to the 21st-century oral traditions of Appalachia. The theatrical production helped to summarize the camp week’s discoveries and provided

an overview of the life of Theseus, stretching from the period before his birth to the many challenging tasks that he undertook in his life. Students considered his mistakes and failures and Students at The Lancaster Center for concluded that, in Classical Studies perform a shadow-screen spite of these, play on the life of the Athenian hero Theseus.
