A timely donation NHAHS receives Davis clock BY ANN MEAD ASH
hen Mike Kauffman realized that none of his children had a ceiling high enough to accommodate the John Davis grandfather clock he had inherited and that when he and his wife, Donna, downsized from their current home, they might not have room for the heirloom, he had a dilemma. “I thought there already was a Davis clock (at the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) Museum),” said Mike. “I didn’t want to send it to auction.” Mike called Steve Loewen, co-founder and president of NHAHS. Loewen informed Mike that the museum had clocks made by two of New Holland’s three historic clockmakers - a John Esterle clock, donated by Tom Wentz, and an Anthony Carpenter clock, donated by M&T Bank. When Mike heard that a John Davis clock was not among the museum’s treasures, he made the decision to donate the timekeeping device.

To celebrate three decades of presenting “The Nutcracker” to Lancaster-area audiences, the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy will hold a special presentation of the ballet, which will bring together on stage 20 dancers who have played Clara in the production. “The Nutcracker” will be presented at the High Fine Arts Center at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Friday, Dec. 1, at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 2, at 1 and
LCCS breakfast to feature Jeff Rutt BY ANN MEAD ASH
When Sandy Outlar, community relations representative for Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS), needed a speaker for the annual breakfast celebrating tuition aid, Jeff Rutt, president of Keystone Custom Homes and chair of HOPE International, immediately sprang to his mind. “I knew Jeff, and I knew of his genuine love for the Lord and his giftedness in building homes and his giftedness in overseeing a ministry that touches thousands,” recalled Outlar. “I couldn’t think of anyone who could do a better job.” Rutt will speak at the breakfast to
6 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. The former Claras will be honored at the 1 p.m. show on Dec. 2. The story of “The Nutcracker” has its roots in “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” written in 1816 by E.T.A. Hoffmann. The ballet tells the tale of a young girl, named Clara, who is given the gift of a nutcracker that comes to life on Christmas Eve. Clara’s beloved toy then battles the Mouse King. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote the score for the ballet, which was first performed in 1892 and has since become a Christmas classic. See “The Nutcracker” pg 5

be held in the new LCCS Student Life Center on Wednesday, Nov. 15, from 7 until 8:15 a.m. The title of Rutt’s talk is “Building a Business While Building a Ministry,” but Rutt noted that the subtitle is “Embrace the Valleys.” Rutt has faced a number of valleys in his lifetime, which he reports began on a Lancaster County dairy farm, which he bought from his family at the age of 20. Ten years later, Rutt was wondering what God had for him next. In the early 1990s, Rutt went into home building, although he had no background in the area. “God blessed it,” he recalled, but in 2008, Rutt was told by a banker that all his loans must be paid See LCCS pg 2

in 60 days. “It was a big challenge,” he noted. “That was a valley.” He entered another valley in 2015, when his wife of more than 40 years, Sue, was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer. Sue is now cancer free and a “living miracle” today, said Rutt. Not long after beginning Keystone Custom Homes, Rutt led a group from his church to Ukraine with containers of supplies. “We had good intentions, but we were inadvertently causing a cycle of entitlement and dependency,” said Rutt, who noted that a pastor in Ukraine told him,

Davis is listed in historical records as a clockmaker in Earl Township from 1805 to 1807. It is believed that his clock shop was located on the south side of the 300 block of East Main Street, and he was known for decorating his clock dials with flowers. Mike knows that the clock belonged to Virginia Renninger, who was the aunt of his grandfather Clyde Kauffman. Virginia lived at 104 E. Main St., New Holland. She never married, and she was a valued employee of New Holland Machine. “My grandparents Clyde and Evelyn Kauffman also lived there,” explained Mike. “(The clock) was at my grandparents’ house my entire life.” Donna said that the clock should be in the museum “for history’s sake,” adding, “There’s a lot more meaning in it being (in the museum).” Mike agreed, noting that

the clock has stayed in the same general area since its creation. “The clock was just down the block, and it was a north of town, but it hasn’t been (outside of) a 1-mile radius its whole existence,” he said. “It’s good for it to remain (in that vicinity),” added Donna. The Kauffmans also donated two lamps that had been in the attic of the hardware store that the Kauffman family owned at 207 E. Main St., New Holland - the same building that now houses the museum. “They found them in the attic when Clyde acquired the building,” noted Donna. Mike stated that Clyde acquired the west side of the building from his uncle Ed Renninger following World War II. Mike has seen a photo of the lamps, which were originally oil lamps, hanging from a tin ceiling, which is believed to be in the Kauffman building. The NHAHS Museum is currently open Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day or by appointment. He just wants to put his head to the ground and do the work and the ministry.” Rutt’s preference is to talk about individuals who have utilized loans from HOPE, and he pointed out that Nadia, “our very first client we gave a loan to in Ukraine,” now owns a clothing store. “When (she) paid her last payment, she said, ‘I won’t be needing any more loans because I am not poor anymore,’” reported Rutt. HVMI (Handi-vangelism Ministries International) experienced two exciting events in September. First, the organization moved from its offices in Ephrata to a new building at 3261 Rothsville Road, Akron, built on land the ministry has owned since 2017. Then, about two weeks later, the ministry celebrated 50 years of serving individuals with disabilities with a birthday party held in that same building. “The birthday party was a way to get people with disabilities and their families involved in the celebration,” said Kyle Robinson, executive director of HVMI. “We had music, refreshments, and sang ‘Happy Birthday.’” On Oct. 14, the organization held a 50th anniversary luncheon, which included a presentation and fashions linked to each decade the ministry has existed. Tim Sheetz, who founded the ministry with his wife, Kathy, and now serves as ministry ambassador, was tasked with dressing up in

Prior to founding HVMI in 1973, the couple spent more than six years at a camp and residential program for people with disabilities in New York state. “ We got on-the-job training,” said Tim, who added that God then moved the ministry to partner with BCM International until 2004. Robinson explained that HVMI is now the umbrella ministry over three departments: disability, grief, and training. The disability ministry includes the summer day camps. The grief ministry is BASIS, a Christian support group for grieving parents, and the training program encompasses disability training, grief training, and outreaches involving abuse and mental health. In addition to offices, the new building boasts rooms to hold support groups and Bible clubs and offer outreaches and training. But it is the plans for the rest of the Akron property, a former golf course, that are beginning to

Author talk and book signing set Garden Spot Village, 443 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, will host an author talk and book signing with resident Leona Baker about her new book, “How They Learned Their ABC’s,” on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. at the chapel. Baker’s nonfiction book focuses on the educational history of Salisbury Township in what is now the Pequea Valley School District. In 1834, a state law was enacted that required each municipality or township to ensure the education of its children. Despite the state law, by 1844, Salisbury Township still did not have schools available to each child in the district. Over the next 22 years, 19 schools had been created across the municipality. Throughout the book, Baker relays the true stories of the students, the teachers, and the communities they served as she describes the impact of education in Salisbury Township.
