“The Furniture Ministry of Evangelical United Methodist Church (EUMC) was born out of our church wanting to do more,” said Nicki Martin, who oversees the ministry with her husband, Chad. As office manager at CrossNet Ministries in New Holland, Nicki knew how often calls came from those wishing to donate furniture. She also knew that the organization did not have the storage area necessary to accept those

At EUMC, Nicki and Chad and a few others wanted to help the ELANCO community by partnering with CrossNet. “I met with our social services team in 2019,” recalled Nicki, who offered the storage space and help to create a furniture bank.

Philadelphia; and Coral Springs, Fla. In June, Drew; his wife, Kristie; and his youngest of four daughters, Andreya, moved to New Holland when he became the new pastor at St. Stephen Reformed Church, 249 E. Main St., New Holland. After 17 years in Florida, Drew may find the climate in Pennsylvania colder, but he has already commented on the warmth of the people. “I couldn’t tell you the names of my neighbors in Florida,” he said. “You didn’t talk to people. Here … everybody has just been so kind, friendly, polite. It’s different, but I love it.” Drew credits Kristie with bringing him to Christ in January of 1988. The pair had been to the movies the

He noted that strengths of the church ministry include a desire for fellowship and to learn the Word. “I am particularly impressed with the number of people who pray and are willing to pray and who are vocal about and active in prayer,” he said, adding that he and church members are discussing forming life groups for fellowship and prayer. He also pointed to the depth of the worship team. “I think we have a strong music ministry, and I think that is an asset in the sense that it really helps enrich our worship,” he said. December prior, and Kristie invited him to church. “I got into a car accident, and I had to move home (with my parents),” recalled Drew, “So I went to church with her on Sunday, and she would tell me about Jesus.” In September of 1989, he began attending Philadelphia College of Bible. He graduated in 1991 and began working as a youth pastor, but he had already felt a calling to preach. Drew has ideas about new ministries the church could offer including a possible preschool and converting an upper hall to a coffee shop atmosphere for young people. Although bringing new people to a church is often a concern for a pastor, Drew is clear that he is following God’s lead. “I minister to whoever the Lord brings me,” he said. “I pray that the Lord builds the church, and I believe it happens through preaching and prayer and demonstrating love to our neighbor. God has to build it. I can’t.” Readers who would like to learn more about the church may visit http://ststephenpca.org.

“Everything is in partnership with CrossNet,” said Nicki, who continues to handle the donor calls and to funnel the requests for furniture to social services. “Chad and I and vounteers will pick (pieces of furniture) up and bring them (to the storage area),” she said. Items are held in storage until a member of CrossNet social services learns of someone in need. “They will say, ‘Nicki, do you have a recliner?’ and I say, ‘Yes, here’s what we have,’” said Nicki, who added that she keeps a Google document of the current stock to refer to. “We do the delivery, too,” said Nicki. “It takes the burden of that off CrossNet.” During 2020, the new ministry placed up to 60 pieces in area homes. The Martins and others involved in the ministry quickly learned which are the best items to accept. “We don’t take sleeper sofas and not full-size sofas unless they are in very gently used condition,” said Nicki, who noted that often recipients do not have room for a full-size sofa and prefer to avoid futons. Cribs and changing tables are accepted. Chad noted that sectionals do not usually work well, but recliners are often useful for those recovering from surgery. “Sectionals are way too big, and (we don’t accept) king-size beds because they would take up the whole room,” he

Spartans Compete in L-L League Playoffs BY ARA GRIGORIAN

With Isabelle Thatcher scoring two of Penn Manor’s three goals on the day, the Garden Spot field hockey team suffered a 3-0 loss to the Comets in the opening round of the L-L League field hockey playoffs on Saturday, October 16 at Garden Spot. VOLLEYBALL The Garden Spot girls’ volleyball team bounced back from a 30 loss to Solanco to take its next match - a 3-0 victory over Section Two rival Manheim Central on Monday, October 18. Solanco won two of its three sets by close margins, beating Garden Spot 25-19 in the first set and 25-23 in the third. The Spartans fell to 6-8 on the year and 5-6 in the LancasterLebanon League. 25-20 and 25-23. The Spartans evened their league record at 6-6. Maddie Knier led the Barons with 11 kills and three blocks. FOOTBALL After two straight games of scoring 42 points followed by a 55-0 shutout, the LampeterStrasburg Pioneers rode into New Holland for a Section Three clash with Garden Spot. The game had the potential for a combustible outcome. The Spartans had no shortage of points in their previous contests, blanking Pequea Valley 56-0 two weeks earlier and knocking off Lebanon 36-0 on Friday, October 8. Prior to the 92-0 run in points, the Spartans had been 0-4 on the year. In fact, Garden Spot would go on to score the game’s first 10 points before the L-S offense got itself in gear. A balanced running game that featured 91 yards on eight carries by Jonathan Mellinger, 60 yards by Pioneer quarterback Berkeley Wagner, who threw for 163 yards, plus 79 yards by Giovanni Malatesta giving Garden Spot a headache. The Pioneers cut that 10-point deficit to 10-7 and went on to score 22 second-quarter points en route to a 50-20 victory. They improved to 7-1 on the year (3-0 league) while Garden Spot fell to 2-5, 1-1. Kyle Harting, who led the Spartans in rushing with 80 yards, broke through for a 44yard dash to the endzone, opening the scoring in this game. Walker Martin converted the extra-point attempt and later booted a 42-yard field goal. Gavin Miller gave Garden Spot a defensive touchdown with a seven-yard fumble return to make it 17-7 Garden Spot early in the second quarter. The Pioneers scored three unanswered touchdowns and, following Martin’s second field goal of the game, Wagner scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak in the third quarter. Harting completed 12 passes for 109 yards. Derrick Lambert caught five of those passes for 40 yards on the night. CROSS COUNTRY The L-L League Cross Country Championship race was held at Ephrata Middle School on Tuesday, October 19. Both the Garden Spot boys’ and girls’ teams finished 18th in the team standings with the girls’ team scoring 506 points and the boys’ team 421 - only seven points behind Elizabethtown. Alan Krock led that boys’ team with a finishing time of 18:26.8. He earned 59th place in the race. Josiah Martin wasn’t far behind, taking 63rd at 18:30.6. William Culbert crossed the finish line at 19:30.1 and Thomas Watt in 19:37. The girls’ leading runner was Julia Hoover (23:14.8). Nicole Kelch registered 24:30.2 while Hayley Zimmerman came in at 25:11.

The Potter’s House of Ruth for women opened in 2020. Joel Jakubowski, men’s program director, said that the men’s ministry is moving forward in several areas including an intensive phase one program to address the roots of issues and provide a restorative foundation before the men move into phase two and full-time employment. Once employed, students can build income and satisfy debt and restitution. A dynamic family program called FAITH, which stands for Family Awareness Instruction Truth and Healing, incorporates

family understanding in the recovery process, and a trauma-informed healing program is in the works with staff training in the core principles of Restoring the Foundations under the direction of Frank Snow. “We have grown tremendously,” noted Jakubowski, who referred to several of the new programs as “game changers” for students in recovery.
