Members of the cast of the Cavod Academy of the Arts production of “Wonder are rehearsing for the presentation of the show on Nov. 13 through 15.
Cavod Schedules “Wonder For Christmas BY ANN MEAD ASH
ack in the spring of 2019, Cavod ballet director Stephanie Morales was thinking about Christmas. “‘The Nutcracker’ is big for the holidays,â€? said Morales. “I love (the show), but ‌ I thought there should be something else for the holidays.â€? When Morales went to sleep one night, she dreamed of a ballet. “(In the dream) were the names of the characters, their journey, and what it would be about,â€? said Morales, who woke up in the morning and wrote down everything she could remember. “I put it all together and brought it to Connie (Dienner, director) at Cavod (Academy of the Arts),â€? recalled Morales. “Our mission (at Cavod) is to create with purpose, so we wanted to offer (a holiday ballet) that would show that to our students.â€? Dienner agreed with Morales, and the result was “Wonder,â€? an original ballet choreographed and directed by Morales. The show premiered at
community, were held at the end of August. Morales said the cast of 30 will include two adults this year, who will portray Ma and Pa Winters. Ma Winters will be played by Kelly Manana, and Pa Winters will be played by David Spolum. “This year, we are adding a sweet shop, which will be brand new, reported Morales. “In the sweet shop we have a baker and little gingerbreads played by 5- to7-yearolds. We have hot chocolate and gumdrops and peppermints (as well). Other scenes include a snow blizzard and a sequence with choir dancers. “Wonder sold out when it was introduced at Cavod in 2019. “We are creating a new tradition for Cavod and the community, said Morales, who noted that through the show she wanted to provide New Holland with another outlet to experience the arts. “It’s been a really fun process, she said. Tickets to the show are available at https://cavod.org/theatre/ or by calling 717-354-3355.

Several years ago, when Sarah Northrup was homeschooling her children, she discovered her daughter had dyslexia. “(It was) impossible to find help and support, recalled Northrup. “I felt I was very isolated. Northrup, who already had a degree in elementary and special education, responded by turning to the National Institute of Learning

Cavod in late 2019. This year, “Wonder will run from Friday, Nov. 13, through Sunday, Nov. 15, at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland. The Nov. 13 show will be at 7 p.m. The Nov. 14 and 15 shows will play at 2 and 7 p.m. Audience members are encouraged to wear masks, and theater seating will be at 50% capacity to comply with COVID-19 restrictions. “Wonder is the story of Gracie, played by Lilly Spolum, and Nick, played by Lincoln Everett, two orphaned children who are searching for the wonder of the holiday season. They are aided in their quest by three Christmas Lights, Twinkle, played by Jada Correll; Flicker, played by Emma Myers; and Pixie, played by Audrey Pavlica. As they search for the “wonder, the children visit the Toy Shoppe, the Christmas Tree Village, and a cathedral. Through their adventure, they learn that the wonder of the holiday season comes from love and from being loved. Auditions, which were open to the
Lisa Kerstetter, director of marketing and events with CrossNet Ministries, noted that this year’s Christmas Gift Program will not be the same. “It will be a drive-through pickup this year, she stated. However, she added that she and CrossNet food and nutrition manager Amy Marburger are able to make a special addition for 2020. “Each family will receive a Christmas meal including a ham, said Kerstetter. Organizers of the CrossNet Christmas Gift Program expect to serve more than 500 ELANCO School District children who regularly receive free lunches or who have been financially affected by COVID-19 restrictions. To provide the program, CrossNet offers area residents the
opportunity to take part in one or more of three giving programs. First, participants may choose to sponsor a local family. Those opting for this route will receive a wish list for each child in the family. The list will include items children need and want, along with a reading suggestion. Individuals and groups that would like to sponsor a family should contact CrossNet at 717-3552454 by Thursday, Nov. 12, so Kerstetter can match donors with families.

She began tutoring other homeschooled students who had dyslexia and other learning issues. “I found that many of the students I was serving (had) parents who were feeling a lot like I was feeling,” said Northrup. “I thought, ‘I can help three kids at a time … or I can start this program to serve a broader population.’ It had been on my heart for a very long time.” In fall of 2019, Northrup opened Firm Foundations Academy, a hybrid homeschooling program, which meets at Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, 110 Durlach Road, Ephrata, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Currently, the school serves a total of more than 50 students in grades one through 10, with the goal of adding grades 11 and 12 in the next few years. “Our goal is for students in 11th and 12th grades to have partnerships to take classes at Lancaster Bible College or to have

A fellowship of mothers meets twice a month at the school to pray. “Our vision is threefold,” said Northrup. “We look to equip students … encourage parents, and cultivate hope.” Shelleen Weaver of New Holland is sending her son to Firm Foundations this fall. “My son is thriving in this environment, and I couldn’t be more grateful,” reported Weaver. All of the more than a dozen teachers are credentialed and experienced, and Northrup and one other are certified in educational therapy. “We are striving to serve kids that are excelling academically, but also those who are (challenged),” said Northrup, who noted that weekly tutoring is offered. The school follows Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for COVID-19. To keep communication flowing in the drop-off program, assignment sheets are provided to parents weekly,

internships so they can go out to the community to get job training,” Northrup noted. “We offer a full scope of classes,” said Northrup, who is head of school for the academy. She listed English, math science, history, art, music, and Bible, among the classes, noting that she tries to offer an eclectic mix taught according to classical educational philosophy with a biblical worldview. “Our high school kids are doing leadership classes,” she noted. “They are learning about character development and then doing service projects out in the community every month.” As a hybrid, the academy represents a partnership between parents and teachers. “It’s teacher directed and parent supported,” explained Northrup. “The teachers supply all the content and lesson plans for parents.” Northrup explained that a reading assignment taught in school would be tied to components the student completes at home and then reinforced at school ending in the student writing a paper on the topic at
their dinners without exiting their cars. According to Cathie Thompson, director of business development at Hickory House, Connie contracted COVID-19 in May and died on June 2. Connie was a graduate of Downingtown High School and the nursing program at Technical College High School, Brandywine Campus. “She was sweet and a wonderful nurse. This has been very sad for us here at Hickory House,” said Thompson. “In an effort to help Emily in the future, our director of nursing, Nicole Del-Mese, has headed several fundraising events within the facility, and the next one is the chicken barbecue, which is open to the public.” Emily, a student at Garden Spot Middle School, lives with Connie’s sister, Chris Robbins, and her husband, Michael, as well as their two sons, who reside in East Earl. “Connie worked weekends, so we had Nicole stay with us every weekend,” said Chris. “She has been like my own since she was born. We are currently her legal guardians but will move to adopt her when that court opens back up.”
worked hard and loved being a nurse. We had an amazing relationship. Anytime I needed her she was there and gave me the best advice. She was really funny - told me jokes when I was sad. She was the best mom I could ever ask for.” Hickory House is located on Route 322 in Honey Brook. For tickets to the barbecue, readers may contact Del-Mese at 610-273-1622.
Emily and her family plan to attend the barbecue, where they will receive a plaque honoring Connie from Life Care Centers of America. “One (plaque) will hang at Hickory House, and one will be given to the family,” Chris noted. Social worker Mary Zebert from Hickory House recently spoke to Emily, and the youngster was eager to share memories of her mother. Emily stated, “She always

husband, Alvin, co-founded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna. Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis
Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring
Pauline H. Engle
Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

None of the patriarchs of the three ELANCO-area grocery stores grew up thinking he would own a supermarket. “It was never John Yoder’s goal in life to own and operate a grocery store, let alone a restaurant, pharmacy, gift shop, or gas station,” reads the Yoder’s Country Market history. Bill Clisham, who owns the Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, located on Route 23 at the west end of New Holland, with his wife, Amy, originally went to college for computer science, and in the 1960s quarry truck driver Marvin Weaver, who grew Shady Maple from a roadside stand owned by the parents of his wife, Miriam, once dreamed of owning a dairy farm. The greater New Holland area Shady Maple is in East Earl - is blessed with three locally owned grocery stores that bring the residents fresh produce and dairy products, homemade baked goods, and more. Bill, who came to own the Bargain Market in 2016, recently speculated as to the stores’ success. “I think it has to do with the dedication of the families running the businesses,” he said. “Whether it’s us or Yoder’s or Shady Maple, we have all remodeled to keep our stores fresh (for customers).”

Bill started his career working at Yoder’s as a teenager. When he graduated from college with a degree in business administration, he became the grocery store manager. He remained with Yoder’s through many expansions. In February of 2015, he read an article about how Grocery Outlet had purchased Amelia’s stores and was changing over to an owner-operator model. He and Amy met with executives in Emoryville, Calif., and they visited stores. At first, they did not think the New Holland store would be available to them, but Bill recalled being told, “You live in New Holland, (so) why would we send you somewhere else?” The store is based on an opportunistic buying concept. Bill noted that the Bargain Market model is different from a conventional market, where there are many national players. He explained that a discount market is a niche market that can offer brand-name items at discount prices, along with fresh produce and meat and local dairy and eggs. At Yoder’s Country Market, also on Route 23 across from Garden Spot High School, Denise Zimmerman, daughter of John and Darlene Yoder, is slated to eventually become the organization’s CEO. She is working closely with her father as the store approaches its 40th anniversary on Dec. 1. Until recently, Denise and her husband, Micah, managed the restaurant together. Her sister, Dina, and Dina’s husband, dairy farmer Kevin Stoltzfus, influenced the family to add a dairy processing plant to the store in 2007, which was the last time Yoder’s expanded. John grew up on a dairy farm, but as a young adult worked as a meat cutter and owned a meat concession. The store originally included a snack bar, but after the snack bar closed in 1984, John added a restaurant, originally called Yoder’s Steak House. Soon the restaurant format changed from steak house to buffetstyle, and added banquet rooms to seat up to 800. Between 1987 and 2004, a gift shop, the Petal Perfect Flower Shop, a full-service pharmacy, and the fuel island and car wash on Main Street became part of the Yoder’s complex. When the dairy processing plant was opened, Yoder’s began selling its own milk and ice cream. Denise explained that the Golden Guernsey milk contains a different protein than most cow’s milk, so it is creamier, but also easier for some people with lactose intolerance to digest. Denise noted that digital coupons are now being offered and curbside pickup is scheduled to start in November. A little over 2 miles up Route 23 is the Shady Maple Farm Market, part

In this constant onthe-go world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed at times. Shopping habits have drastically changed due to an increase in big box retailers and a boom in online purchasing. As a result of that, many have noticed something missing from their holiday traditions, taking away from the spark of the season. Making time for a tangible, personal shopping experience is beneficial. There has never been a better time for nostalgia than now. What sets the Shady Maple Gift Shop apart from other stores is that it brings back fond memories of yesteryear. With a storied past, the quaint charms of a European village and the outdoor recreation of a mountain sports destination, the town of Jim Thorpe is a must-see town tucked into the Pocono Mountains. Jim Thorpe is a destination rich with history and is often called the “Switzerland of America because of its scenic views. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of coal mining and industrialism, which today house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as

a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportu-
nity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York
state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17-room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15-foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was A carriage ride through the streets of Jim Thorpe is a the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s great way to see the quaint shops and beautiful archi- “Haunted Mansion. tecture.

Esh Scores Game Winner in Tiebreaker Match
by Ara Grigorian
The Elco Raiders have had a successful season, racking up 10 victories in league play. Their only loss of the year was a 1-0 setback on October 12 to Garden Spot in a crucial Section Three showdown. Therefore, it was only fitting that the deciding match for the section supremacy would come down to these two teams. In fact, both squads finished with 9-1 records in league play, splitting the head-to-head season series as Elco won 3-1 back on September 29. The tiebreaker match was played at Cocalico on Tuesday night. And it ended in a tie. Well, a tie through regulation. Lauren Esh scored the gamewinner in overtime to give Garden Spot a 2-1 victory. “We knew Elco would be a great team,” head coach Katy Eby said. “We knew it would come down to a onegoal game.” Amanda Smith gave Elco a 1-0 lead

On defense, the senior intercepted a tipped pass and ran it 32 yards for a defensive touchdown. Let’s not forget the special teams. The Spartans first got on the board with Walker Martin’s 29-yard field goal. Two rushing touchdowns in the second quarter and Walker Martin’s PAT kicks made it 17-0 at the half. Tyler Gillenwater’s six-yard TD run and John Dykie’s eight-yard dash gave Garden Spot a comfortable lead. The pick-six in the third quarter gave Garden Spot a 24-0 lead before Catholic finally got on the board - Will Cranford’s 16-yard pass to Mason McClair plus a two-point conversion. Cranford finished with 242 yards, completing 17 of 35 passes.

They allowed very few opportunities to Elco. I’m proud of my girls for pushing through and for working extremely hard.”

13th in 14 matches - defeating Solanco in Section Two girls’ volleyball action. In winning all 14 matches played this year, the Spartans’ only 3-1 victory was at Elizabethtown on October 21 - the win that actually clinched the section title for Garden Spot. On Wednesday night, in a semifinal round of the L-L League playoffs, the Spartans found themselves down 2-0 to Lancaster Catholic. In a match played at Cocalico, Garden Spot roared back with three straight victories - 2520, 25-19 and 15-9. The victory earned the Spartans (15-0) a spot in the league championship match against Hempfield. The team headed into the L-L League playoffs unbeaten in league play and, according to head coach Lauren DiPiano, some unfinished business to take care of. “This team is hungry,” DiPiano said. “They were underdogs last year and nobody expected us to go as far as we did. They were able to find ways to make their weaknesses their strengths. “Because of the success we had last year, these girls have been waiting
since last November,” she added. The Spartans entered the 2019 District Three Class 3A playoffs as the third-seeded team. In the semifinals, they outlasted number two seed West York 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 13-25, 15-12 only to lose to undefeated top seed Palmyra in the championship match. In Monday’s match at Solanco, the Spartans won 25-13, 25-15, 25-10. Logan Martin, one of the seniors on the squad, led the way with 10 kills. She also registered one block. “I’ve seen a great deal of improvement in her from last year,” said DiPiano. “She worked hard in the off-season. Been great watching her every day. “She finds ways to get points,” added the coach. “She is a dominant force. She has a way of getting her teammates to play up to her level. And, we haven’t seen a team able to shut her down.” Fellow seniors Anna Zimmerman and Abby O’Neill were also among the leaders. O’Neill served up four aces and distributed 18 assists while Zimmerman finished with three digs.

To win a game convincingly, it takes great all-around effort. To win a football game convincingly, the effort must come from offense, defense and special teams.
