New Hollanders are known for their generosity, not only at the holidays, but all year long. Still, it is when CrossNet Ministries asks local residents to help make Christmas brighter for area families that one of the largest displays of giving in the area can be witnessed.
In 2023, organizers of the CrossNet Christmas Program anticipated more than 600 children would receive gifts through the effort. “Last year, we (provided gifts for) 610 children,” said Meghan Ervine, director of marketing and communications for CrossNet. According to Corrine Horning, community events and outreach manager for the ministry, it’s possible this year that number will be closer to 700.
In 2023, in an effort to make it easier for donors to sponsor local children, at a suggested donation of $100 per child, the

along with important forms that sponsors can use. The booklet can be downloaded at https:// elancocross.org by clicking on “What we do” and “Community” and scrolling to “Christmas Gift Program.” Those wishing to sponsor a local family are asked to contact CrossNet by calling

In addition to sponsorship, 20 donation bins will be placed in community areas, such as churches and businesses, throughout the month of November. Items that may be placed in bins include
sports equipment, children’s books, Legos, board games, craft sets, and stocking stuffer items. Area residents are also welcome to hold their own toy drives and bring the items to CrossNet at 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland. Area residents who prefer to give smaller items may take part

Holiday bazaar planned at Our Lady of Lourdes
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Last year, members of Our Lady of Lourdes Church decided to resurrect the annual holiday bazaar that had been held years before. “At Our Lady of Lourdes, we have a strong focus on community, and hosting the holiday bazaar is an excellent opportunity to bring together the members of the parish and our neighbors,” said organizer Karen Kernc. “The 2023 event was the first in over 15 years and a welcome return after the pandemic.”

Heritage Day attracts thousands
BY ANN MEAD ASH
According to Wanda Swarr, founder of Pathways school, which meets in Brubaker Park, Heritage Day serves two main purposes. “It is primarily an outreach to the community,” said Swarr. “We want to spread our passion for learning and history.”
But Heritage Day also gives Pathways students a chance to showcase their talents and skills, and they contribute to the evolving offerings of the event.
“The kids are great at coming up
with ways to improve it,” shared Swarr. “It really displays who we are here by giving students hands-on ownership and opportunities to make decisions.”
The fifth annual Pathways Heritage Day was held at the Brubaker Homestead at Brubaker Park, 414 Long Lane, East Earl, on Oct. 19.
Heritage Day celebrates rural Lancaster County history and culture. Originally, the event focused on European history, but a student pointed out that Native American artifacts were

Most activities are free, but each year a nominal fee is charged for a few of them. Swarr said the 2024 event was marked by heavy foot traffic, estimating close to 4,000 attendees, perfect weather, and positive comments. Among the many demonstrations were open

The Divine Grind Coffee trailer will be on hand, as well as the Old Road Pretzel Trailer food truck, which will offer homemade soft pretzels and stuffed pretzels. There will also be a campfire and a free s’mores station. During the event, the retail store and workshop will be open, both of which are located downstairs in the building. Visitors will be able to watch crafters creating bags and other leather goods as they shop in a one-of-a-kind open-view workshop. Crafters are currently creating some fun holiday-themed leather goods for the upcoming season.
Urban Southern uses only the highestquality full-grain leather, which has never been sanded down or processed, so it retains all of its natural strength and beauty. The leather also develops its own patina over time, becoming softer and more beautiful with use.
Step into their one-of-a-kind open-view workshop and watch their production assistants create leather handbags, wallets & accessories, then visit the second floor boutique to shop unique handmade items. Featuring a wide selection of leather goods, candles, jewelry, home decor, kitchenware, and more.
Urban Southern is located in an antique barn that was built in 1910 as a tobacco warehouse, which lends to the building’s charm and character.
Urban Southern is located at 2058 Main St., Narvon. Hours of operation are Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 717-4455956, email info@urbansouthern.com or visit www.urbansouthern.com or www. facebook.com/urbansouthern. fire cooking, paper making, leather making, pony rides, and Colonial games. A fur trapper, military encampments, and horse-drawn carriage rides were available, and a Model A car and tractors were on display. “We had a tinsmith, woodworkers, gunsmiths, soap makers, basket weaving, scherenschnitte (artwork made by cutting paper), and pottery (demonstrations),” pointed out Swarr. “One lady drove in from Michigan to give Pennsylvania Dutch lessons at her tent,” said Swarr. Several area residents gave presentations, including “24 Years of the Terre Hill Trolley” by Carol Ann Boswell of the Terre Hill Area Historical Society, a review of music by the Ephrata Cloister Chorus presented by Suzanne Fisher, and “Real Boys of the Civil War” by author Joel Moore.
Interactive activities were a popular part of the day. For the Woods Walk Challenge, a contest for adults and teens, groups of four
walked through the woods visiting stations, where each participant earned points to determine how well each could survive on the frontier. Swarr noted that the activity sold out for the entire day. “Another new event that was a hit was a running deer target,” said Swarr, who explained that local builder and Pathways volunteer Brandon Steffy worked with students to build the background with a deer cutout moving across the front. “They designed this track so they can take a shot at a moving deer,” said Swarr, who pointed out that those who hit the target won a ticket for a door prize from local gun and archery shops. Swarr noted that Heritage Day educates Pathways students before and during the
event. “They have developed so many public speaking skills,” she noted, adding that the students also learn from the adult presenters and demonstrators. Pathways Hybrid-Learning Community, founded in 2018, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving more than 70 students in grade three through 12. Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. Election Day is Tuesday, November 5th. Call us to find your polling place: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.
Sincerely, Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio

Volunteer readers sought for Ag Literacy Week
The Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation is seeking volunteer readers for its ninth annual Ag Literacy Week, which is set to occur from Monday to Friday, March 17 to 21. Volunteers from communities across the state will visit classrooms and other student groups to read the book “The Soil in Jackie’s Garden” and talk about local farming.
CrossNet Ministries
from pg 1
After each reading event, volunteers donate a copy of the book and educational activities to the classroom to be used throughout the year and with future classes. More than 2,000 copies of the book will be presented in classrooms in Pennsylvania this year.
Ag Literacy Week connects volunteers from the agricultural community to local classrooms to share the story of agriculture. Readers have the opportunity to talk about farming and agriculture through the book they read as well as sharing their own story about farming, agriculture programs they are involved with, or their connections to agriculture.
“The Soil in Jackie’s Garden” explores the joys of planting a garden, nurturing and harvesting food, and recycling scraps to compost, ensuring that the cycle of growth and sustainability continues. Scientific facts about soil, plants, pollinators, decomposers, and more are included on every spread. The book encourages young See Ag pg 11
in a stocking stuffer drive. Items that are sought include small toys and books, keychains, playing cards, candy, earbuds, lip balm, travel-size personal items, sticky notes, and jewelry sets. Stocking stuffer items should be delivered to CrossNet by Wednesday, Dec. 11.
Another option is to purchase gift cards, which can then be given specifically to teenagers in the community in ninth grade and up. This offers young people the opportunity to make their own purchases. Organizers often pair the gift cards with kits of personal care items.
On Saturday, Dec. 14, sponsored families will come to CrossNet to pick
up their gifts. In addition to gifts, families will receive a Christmas meal, including a whole ham, potatoes, and all the fixings to cook; cookies; and wrapping paper and tape.
Adult volunteers are always needed during workshop days, held this year on Monday, Dec. 9, through Wednesday, Dec. 11. Volunteers who work during these days help sort incoming gifts. Volunteers with clearances are also needed during the event on Dec. 14. Donations of wrapping paper and tape will be appreciated as well. Readers who wish to volunteer may contact Horning at the aforementioned phone number or email.

Organizers have lined up more than 30 vendors take part. “I love to see the things that our handmade and homemade makers come up with,” said fellow organizer Colleen Rooney. “The creativity that goes into some of these items is amazing.” Kernc noted that a variety of craft items will be on display, including woodworking, hand-painted glass ornaments, jewelry, ceramics, custom florals, stained glass, soy candles, incense, soaps, and wreaths. Artwork will include painted canvases and jewelry and canvases made with paint pouring. Crocheted items will include scrubbies, tea towels, pillows, small quilts, table runners, and placemats. Food items that will be available for purchase at the event will include chicken corn soup sold by the bowl and the quart, hot dogs, chips, soda, coffee, and baked items. Kernc pointed out that baked items featured at the sale will be homemade this year. “Last year, we made them at the church because we didn’t realize they could be made at home,” she explained, adding that a sign on the baked goods tables will note that the items are homemade.
All funds raised by the sales will be used for capital improvements at the church.
Kernc is looking forward to the event. “In 2024 we hope to repeat (last year’s) success and continue to increase our reach to the general public,” she said, adding that vendor space may still be available. Art gallery posts open houses
Open house events will be held at the recently completed ASPIE Art Gallery, 1905 Barton Drive, Lancaster, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, Nov. 9 and 16.
ASPIE, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating supplemental income for adult artisans with disabilities. ASPIE helps these artisans generate income through donations for their original artwork using the online ASPIE Gallery, www.asp ieartists.com, and now the Lancaster gallery.
The new gallery was built to provide an opportunity for artists with a range of
disabilities to showcase their artworks. The gallery was opened on a trial basis last fall to family members and friends, and it will now open to the public for the holiday season.
The gallery includes artworks by Jesse Buckwalter, Jonathan Whitlock, Dorrin Gingerich, JP Henry, Kate Manners, Steven Georges, and Ryan Zinnanti. Featured are paintings, photographic prints, metal sculptures, jewelry, original comic books, crafts, figurines, and more. In addition, the open houses will include a Christmas bazaar featuring items that may serve as holiday gifts.
