Making Shakespeare Accessible

The Torch To Host New Music Program

By Ann Mead Ash

By Francine Fulton

Directing not one but two Shakespeare plays for the Garden Spot Performing Arts (GSPA) fall production should be a daunting task, but not for Claudia Beebe. “I directed one-hour Shakespeare plays for five years in Utah,” explained Beebe. “Josh Martin, assistant/artistic director for the fall production, remembered that, and he asked me to do this,” she shared. “I said, ‘Sure, I would love to.’” Abridged versions of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will be staged at Garden Spot High School (GSHS), 669 E. Main St., New Holland, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 16 and 17, with a 2:30 p.m. show on Sunday, Nov. 18. See Shakespeare Plays pg 10

Decorated trees, live music, and other reminders of the holiday season will be on display when Historic Poole Forge holds its Christmas at the Ironmaster’s celebration at the forge on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from Nov. 30 to Dec. 9.

A vendor bingo fundraiser will take place on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Ephrata American Legion, 300 Cocalico St., Ephrata. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m., and bingo will start at 2 p.m. Tickets will include 20 games, and special games and giveaway drawings will also be available. There will also be food. Tickets will be discounted when purchased in advance and full price at the door. Proceeds will support Cocalico High School marching band members who will travel to Disney World next year to perform on Main Street USA. For tickets and details, contact Nadia Krantz at 717419-3058 or nadiakrantz@yahoo.com.

Beatrice Gauthier (left) and Jordan Tennis (right) will play Juliet and Romeo, respectively, when Garden Spot Performing Arts presents abridged versions of “Romeo and Juliet” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at Garden Spot High School on Nov. 16, 17, and 18.

Along with prayer groups, talks by guest speakers and open mic nights, The Torch Community Center in Morgantown will offer a new music program, featuring sing-alongs and informal gatherings of local musicians, on Sunday nights beginning on Nov. 11. The new music program will be held on the second, third and fourth Sundays of the month. Ed Kurtz, director of The Torch, explained that although the music will begin at 7 p.m., The Torch opens at 5 p.m. on Sundays, so people are welcome to arrive early to enjoy fellowship. “I am responding to a request for a place where musicians can gather to use their talents and give release to the music bottled up inside of them,” said See The Torch pg 3

the Roland Zimmerman Family. Kurtz said that many local musicians and singers share their talents during those sessions. “The singers range from individuals to families - some with talented small children,” said Kurtz. “Some use instruments; some sing a cappella. People come with a variety of instruments - flute, saw, guitar, accordion and keyboard.” For the acoustic open mic nights, musicians may register at 6:30 p.m.; music takes place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. “At about 8:30 p.m., the music stops, and the warm fellowship begins,” Kurtz remarked. Musicians are offered a small stage, room for tuning, a keyboard for pianists, four microphones with stands, sheet music stands and tools. No drum sets are allowed, but hand drums and percussion instruments are permitted. Musicians are encouraged to perform acoustically or a cappella. More information about the program is available at www.face book.com/ChristianOpenMic and www.openmic.rolandzimmerman family.org. The Torch Community Center, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2017, was founded by a group of residents who wanted to establish a place for people to find support, enjoy Christian fellowship and take part in social activities. The Torch facility is located in the Clock Tower Plaza behind Zou’s Garden. It includes a pool table, a small kitchen area, a stage for performers and coffeehousestyle booths and sofas designed to encourage conversation. There is also a library featuring books for both adults and children. Kurtz when explaining how the program was conceived. “The drummer from a local church, Dan McCormick, is the inspiration for this new venture. He enjoys music of many kinds and wants a place where he can add to the ‘joyful noise,’” explained Kurtz. “Probably the best description of the program would be a jam session. Very spontaneous. “All music will be inspirational and uplifting,” Kurtz added. Musicians are invited to bring their instruments and join in. “We already have a guitarist, drummer and accordion player involved,” noted Kurtz. “We could use a keyboard player and more (musicians).” Already on the schedule on the first Sunday night of every month at The Torch is Christian Acoustic Music Open Mic Night hosted by

PUMPKIN FRENCH TOAST Full of all Fall avors, this Pumpkin French Toast is a treat everyone will love!

CrossNet office manager Lisa Kerstetter stated that organizations, churches, and businesses often adopt a family. “We have quite a few (groups) that do that, explained Kerstetter. “They split up (the list) and make it fun, she said. Individuals and groups that would like to adopt a family should contact CrossNet at 717-355-2454 by Thursday, Nov. 8, so Kerstetter can match donors with families. “We can take donors later than that, though, if we have families (in need), she added. A second way to help is to bring a toy to a local donor bin. “We are collecting toys in bins because sometimes we need extra things or (we receive) a family’s list late, explained Dahl. Toys that may be placed in bins include miniature cars, skateboards, sports equipment, children’s books, purses and bags, action figure toys, Legos, board games, educational baby toys, craft sets, and more. Kerstetter noted that bins can be found at Flower and Home Marketplace, SquireSide Cafe, JB Zimmerman, and Buehler Family Dental. Items should be placed in bins by Friday, Dec. 7. A third way to take part in the program is to give to the stocking stuffer drive. Items that are sought include small toys and books, keychains, playing cards, glow sticks, harmonicas, candy, chewing gum, headphones, nail polish, lip balm, travel-size personal items, hairbrushes and combs and hair accessories, sticky notes, sitckers, small puzzles, silly straws, wallets, jewelry sets, and beef jerky. Stocking stuffer items should be delivered to the CrossNet offices at 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland, by Dec. 7. On Saturday, Dec. 15, adopted families will come to CrossNet to pick up their gifts. “That day is special because it focuses on empowering the families, said Dahl. “They pick up the gifts, they wrap them here, (and at Christmas) they give them to their children. Dahl added that parents may also choose stocking stuffers for each child and that they have a chance to write a thank-you note to the donor. “It’s a really special event based on mutual respect, said Dahl. “We all fall on hard times, and we are going to help each other out. Dahl noted that some parents whose children benefit from the program give back by volunteering at the event. Kerstetter said that adult volunteers are needed to help sort incoming gifts during the week prior to the event. “We need extra volunteers from Monday, Dec. 10, through Friday, Dec. 14, she said. Readers who wish to volunteer may call the CrossNet office. More information about CrossNet Ministries may be found at https://elancocross.org.

Many stamps will be on display, and stamps of many varieties will be for sale. Stamp dealers will be available to give value evaluations and to answer questions. The program will end at 9 p.m., but visitors may come and go as they please throughout the event. The Philatelic Society of Lancaster County has more than 100 active members, and the club is more than 80 years old. For more information, readers may call Len Kasper at 717-723-1864.

Packing Shoeboxes, Sending Love

COUNTRY/GOSPEL CONCERT GARDEN SPOT FIRE RESCUE HALL 339 E. MAIN STREET, NEW HOLLAND, PA

By Chelsea Peifer

SATURDAY, NOV. 17 - 7:00PM

Every November, during Operation Christmas Child’s National Collection Week, thousands of shoeboxes stuffed to the gills with small toys, school supplies, and hygiene items are collected to deliver to children in need around the world. While there are thousands of drop-off sites throughout the country, Deb Ward, who serves as the volunteer area coordinator for Lancaster and Lebanon counties, noted that this region is consistently one of the areas that collects the largest number of boxes. “We collected around 32,000 boxes last year,” Ward said. “We’ve got a huge goal this year, and we’re really praying to get over 37,000.” National Collection Week is set to take place from Monday, Nov. 12, through Monday, Nov. 19, for the Samaritan’s Purse project. Volunteers like Ward get to experience the joy that abounds as adults, youths, and children drop off the shoeboxes at various locations before they are shipped to a distribution center in Baltimore. From there,

feel dismayed about him receiving something so impractical for the climate where he lived. However, they were surprised to see his exuberant reaction. “He was thrilled, and the translator explained it was because he had needed a pair of gloves to try out to be a soccer goalie, but his family couldn’t afford to buy any,” Ward relayed. “So the gloves turned out to be perfect.” Ward explained that families may use a medium-size shoebox they already own, purchase a designated Operation Christmas Child box at Hobby Lobby, or contact any of the drop-off locations to see if they have any extra boxes available. Drop-off locations in Lancaster County include the following: LCBC - Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim; Jerusalem Church, 1620 Newport Road, Manheim; New Life Church, 1991 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster; Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street; Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland; and Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. To view the times for each location or to find additional drop-off sites in surrounding areas, interested individuals may visit www.samaritans purse.org/operation-christmas -child/drop-off-locations/. Additional instructions and suggestions on what to pack in the boxes according to age and gender may also be found at the website. Generally, each box should include one special item, such as a stuffed animal, soccer

Ward said the boxes are taken by tractor trailers, airplanes, or ships to the approximately 120 nations where children will receive the gifts. “During collection week, the best thing to see is when a family walks in and the child is carrying a box and they’re so proud they made this box and so excited that a little kid is going to get a box (they) made themselves,” shared Ward. “They’re getting gifts for children in a war-torn or (developing) country who may have never received anything like this before.” “For me personally, I get to pray over the boxes at each location,” Ward continued. “That blesses my heart, to know that I can touch so many lives in that way, because each box represents a person.” In April 2017, Ward had the opportunity to travel to Rwanda to help hand out shoeboxes to children and youths along with other Operation Christmas Child volunteer area coordinators from around the United States. Ward said that sometimes depending on logistics, the boxes are not distributed immediately at Christmas but later on throughout the year. This was the case with the Rwanda delivery, but the timing did not take away from the recipients’ delight. “You see almost a void of joy, and when that gift comes in, they really come alive,” Ward recalled. “The void that was in their eyes becomes this amazing joy. Like we say, it’s the light of Christ that comes in.” One 11-year-old boy in Rwanda opened a box that included a pair of winter gloves, causing Ward and the other volunteers to

JFS Will Present Film Screenings Jewish Family Services (JFS) of Lancaster will present two special showings of the PBS movie “GI Jews: Jewish Americans in World War II” at Penn Cinema, 541 Airport Road, Lititz, on Monday, Nov. 12. Showings of the movie will be presented from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission will be free, but donations will be accepted. Tickets are required and must be ordered by visiting www.jfslancaster.org/gi-jews. The event is open to active servicemen and women, all veterans, and the general public. The 1 p.m. showing will feature brief remarks by local World War II veteran Newton Dana, 94, who co-piloted a B-17. Dana will be introduced by Gary Levinson, a Vietnam veteran. The 7 p.m. showing will feature a short talk by retired Col. Donna Hershey, who served 29 years as a U.S. Army nurse. Hershey will be introduced by Lara Paparo of JFS and Dr. Jack Fischel, professor emeritus of Millersville University. The film tells the story of the 550,000 Jewish American men and women who fought in World War II. Veterans, both famous and unknown, including Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, and Henry Kissinger, will share their war experiences in their own words. The special showings are being sponsored by the Jewish Community Alliance of Lancaster. For more information, readers may call Bob Ruder at 717-393-0150.

Christmas Bazaar

As is tradition at the forge, located at 1940 Main St., Narvon, organizers will include specially decorated Christmas trees, a wishing well for Christmas hopes and dreams, and visits from Santa, as well as photo opportunities on Sunday afternoons. Organizers envision the new marketplace as a small Christmas village featuring decorated sheds made by local builders. “Vendors will rent space in the sheds,” explained Vicki Owens. Maryann Oestreich added that a variety of local crafters and artisans have been invited to display their wares. Among the vendors who have signed on to take part are those who make horseradish, lemon curd, jellies, pottery, and repurposed clothing. Organizers hope to have a maker of toys on-site as well. Local neighbors will bring homemade refreshments such as cookies to be served in the West Tenant House. A Chinese auction including items donated by local vendors will be held in the same location. Live music during the event will be provided by a group of area flute players, a brass group made up of Garden Spot High School students, and other local musicians. Owens has lined up a number of area businesses to fill the mansion and basement of the Paymaster’s House with specially decorated themed trees. “Some highlight their businesses, and some just do something really beautiful,” explained Ekdahl. Oestreich said many of the beautified trees

are unique. Among the many businesses that will decorate this year will be printers, a builder, a landscaper, window and door sellers, two savings banks, a design and interior decorating business, a therapeutic massage practice, an audiologist, an optometrist, an insurance agency, a personal trainer, and a local publisher. A local dentist who usually decorates the tree with teeth will participate this year, as will a glass blowing shop from St. Peter’s Village. Nonprofit organizations that will take part include Laurel Dance Studio, the Poole Forge Garden Club, the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society, and more. Poole Forge features a renovated 18th-century Welsh Ironmaster’s Mansion, so on the evenings of Dec. 1 and 8, organizers have planned bonfires, caroling, and educational sessions about Welsh customs for visitors to enjoy. Along with the picturesque Ironmaster’s Mansion, Poole Forge includes a covered bridge, the babbling Conestoga Creek, and more. Ever since the nonprofit Historic Poole Forge organization was formed to preserve the site, a variety of activities have been held at the location. There is an admission cost to attend Christmas at the Ironmaster’s. Children under age 12 may enter for free. Groups of 15 or more should call 484-7975302 for reservations. Children, parents and grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins are invited to participate. The event is designed with preschool and elementary children in mind. Families will be able to learn about causes in Lancaster that impact local families every day, give their thoughts on what is important to them, and share their passion with others. The festival will include interactive learning stations, on-site ExtraGive T-shirt printing, and a family photo station. Steven Courtney will present live music. The ExtraGive Fest will follow from 6 p.m. to midnight on the second and third floors of the Lancaster Marriott and Lancaster County Convention Center. Attendees may count down the final hours of the Extraordinary Give and attend performances by local and regional bands. ExtraGive Fest will also serve as the central hub for the Extraordinary Give, featuring screens that will actively display social media content uploaded by people using #ExtraGive, social media stations for photo opportunities, and giving stations for attendees to donate throughout the evening. From 5 p.m. to midnight, the Griest Building in Penn Square will be aglow with a 14-story light show, making it a glowing symbol of the community’s generosity during the Extraordinary Give. The light show will feature changing colors and patterns that ExtraGive Fest attendees may customize by pushing integrated buttons in an interactive experience. The lights’ responses to the individuals’ actions are meant to create a metaphorical example of how each individual action may impact the community. The record-breaking 2017 Extraordinary Give generated a total of $8.6 million for 464 nonprofit organizations in a single day. More than $31 million has been generated since the creation of the Extraordinary Give in 2012. For more information about the 2018 Extraordinary Give, including a list of participating organizations, readers may visit www.ExtraGive.org.

The Lancaster County Community Foundation will hold the seventh annual Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 16. On that day, from midnight to 11:59 p.m., individuals may visit www.ExtraGive.org, choose from any of 500 local nonprofit organizations, and make an online donation. Thanks to the Community Foundation, the High Foundation, and corporate sponsors, all participating organizations will receive a prorated portion of the stretch pool, which will total at least $500,000. For example, if an organization receives 3 percent of the total donations raised during the Extraordinary Give, that organization will receive 3 percent of the stretch pool. An additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered throughout the day in the form of Golden Tickets and other incentive structures. New this year, individuals may support their favorite organizations through peer-to-peer fundraising. Individuals may set fundraising goals and share stories and their ExtraGive personal links with their social network to raise support for their chosen organizations on Nov. 16. Community members may become peer-to-peer ExtraGive fundraisers by visiting the aforementioned website, finding the organization they wish to support, and clicking the Fundraise button. Additionally, this year dozens of individuals across Lancaster County will be part of spreading the word about the Extraordinary Give by being part of the Give Fleet. The volunteer driving squad is open to members of the public who would like to promote the Extraordinary Give by applying a specially designed magnet to their personal or business vehicle. Magnets will be available through the Lancaster County Community Foundation. Give Fleet volunteers will apply their own magnet at any time from Saturday, Nov. 10, to Friday, Nov. 16. Any licensed driver is eligible to be part of the Give Fleet and may register to participate at the Extraordinary Give website. On Nov. 16, community members may also support the day of fundraising by attending the Family Give Fest and the ExtraGive Fest. Both events are free and open to the public. The Family Give Fest will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Lancaster Marriott, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster.

Shakespeare Plays from pg 1 A cast of about 25 GSHS students will be featured in both plays. “If (a student has) a principal role in one, (the student will) have a supporting role in the other, explained Martin. “Romeo and Juliet is the wellknown story of two young lovers from feuding families. Their tragic deaths ultimately lead to reconciliation between their relatives. The GSPA production will feature Jordan Tennis as Romeo and Beatrice Gauthier as Juliet. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream is also a popular Shakespearean show. The play features four interconnecting plots surrounding the celebration of the wedding of Theseus, played by Andrew Jones, to Hippolyta, played by Kat Dorsheimer. Each one-hour version uses narration to set up scenes and keep the audience informed. “(The narration) is like the subtitles in opera, explained Martin. Narrators for “Romeo and Juliet will include Angel Brenneman and Mandy Weaver. For “A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Beatrice Gauthier, Alayna Henry, and Jasmine Arment will narrate. To make the content even more audience-friendly, Beebe is directing the actors and actresses to keep it real. “(Shakespeare is) not stuffiness, where you stand there and recite and hope the audience will understand, Beebe explained. “(The actors) have to make the audience understand it. Beebe noted that the students were understandably nervous auditioning to take part in the classic shows, but she is working

to encourage them to speak their lines in a more realistic way. “(Shakespeare) is new (to the students), and it’s a process,â€? she said, adding that interpretation and delivery are challenges with both productions. “(I tell them), ‘Don’t make the speech affected,’ (because) I want them to say it the way they would naturally say it to make it real,â€? Beebe said. Beebe plans to bring the same reality to the action in the shows. “In ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ the fun is (that the couple is in) love,â€? said Beebe, who added that the students know the story and are enjoying staging the fight scenes. For “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,â€? Beebe said she is playing up the humor in a slapstick fashion. “There will be a lot of ‘Three Stooges’-type physical comedy,â€? shared Beebe. “The students (were) surprised by that.â€? Martin believes that Beebe’s take on the shows will make it easier for audiences to relate. “(I think) anyone who comes to see it will get the highlights and feel like they have learned something,â€? said Martin. “(Audience members) may have heard the title of the show or read (the play) 20 years ago, (but) ‌ I think to see it on stage in person may be more gratifying than to read it.â€? General admission tickets may be purchased at the box office in the lobby from 6 to 8 p.m. each evening the week of the show beginning on Monday, Nov. 12. Tickets are also available by calling 717-354-1584 and may also be obtained at the door prior to performances.

Board Announces Redesign Of Library Plan The Adamstown Area Library board of directors recently approved a redesign for its new library plan. A rendering of the new design was completed as library officials embarked on the final leg of their Room to Grow capital campaign. More than $960,000 has been raised during the capital campaign. The goal is $1.5 million, and donations are still being accepted. The library serves more than 30,000 residents in five municipalities: Adamstown Borough, Brecknock Township, Denver Borough, East Cocalico Township and West Cocalico Township. The new design was created by construction and architectural firms that evaluated the existing VFW multi-story building that was purchased by the library in 2016. Upon assessing the building code, the firms discovered that the upper three floors of the building were unusable, even for storage, without the installation of fire prevention measures, a costly stairwell and substantial structural steel. Despite this news, the footprint of the older structure will be used while the library’s new front design will fit into the neighborhood. The new design of the building will better accommodate the circulation desk, offices and children’s area. The library has been housed in its present location at 3000 N. Reading Road since 1998, when it was moved from the basement of the Adamstown YMCA. The Adamstown Borough leases the current space to the library for $1 per year. To learn more about the new design and the capital campaign, readers may attend a town meeting on Monday, Nov. 12, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the library. Coffee and dessert will be served.

Spot Volleyball Ends Season In District Consolation It was an up-and-down week for the Garden Spot’s volleyball team as the Spartans entered the District Three Class-AAA playoffs. The week included a victory in the quarterfinals followed by a 3-0 loss in the district semis, which led to Saturday evening’s consolation match at Central York. The quarterfinals were held as a doubleheader at Palmyra and at West York on Tuesday. The Spartans played the opening match at Palmyra where they topped Berks Catholic 3-1. Meanwhile, in the nightcap, the host school topped Fleetwood 3-0. The Spartans held off the Saints in the first two sets by the identical margin of 25-16. The Saints (15-4) won the third set 25-9 and would not go down easily in the fourth and final set. The fourth-seeded Spartans prevailed 25-23, improving to 17-3. Shawna Zeiset poured in 15 kills to spark the offense. The Spartans were also led by Sarah Shirk, who distributed 27 assists while Kelly Martin registered 18 digs and served up five aces, and Logan Martin notched three blocks.

Meanwhile, in the other doubleheader, which was held at West York, it was a battle of East and West - York, that is. West York, which entered the playoffs as the second-seeded team, topped Eastern York and sixth-seeded Dover defeated York Suburban. That set up the semifinal match won by West York, 3-0. Garden Spot was not able to get past Palmyra in its semifinal match at Lower Dauphin on Thursday. The Cougars - the district’s top-seeded team - managed to hold off the Spartans in three closely-contested sets, 25-21, 25-19 and 25-22. Zeiset and Logan Martin each drilled seven kills onto the Cougars’ side of the court while Kelly Martin led the team in aces and digs, registering three and 15, respectively. Shirk came through with 24 assists while Zeiset, Elyse Mundorff and Logan Martin each registered one block. Taylor McInerney led the way for Palmyra, serving up four aces and pouring in 11 kills while Jackie Baker racked up five digs. The Spartans’ final chance to continue their 2018 campaign came on Saturday evening in the district consolation match. The top three teams from the district were guaranteed a spot in the PIAA Class-AAA state playoffs and it was between the Spartans and the Dover Eagles. Another match with three close sets took place at Central York High School and again the result was not favorable to the Spartans as they ended their season with a 17-5 record. Dover downed Garden Spot 25-23, 25-20 and 25-20.

Abby O’Neill (front, center) won this year’s Herr Scholarship. She was recoginized by Bob Lauffer, lamb and goat chair (back row, left) and Robert D. Herr, Grassland FFA founding adviser and donor (back row, right). Business representatives that supported the scholarship by bidding include (back row, from left) Greg Hill, Kurt Sensenig, and Emily Sensenig of Sensenig’s Feed Mill; Tony Bender and Jack Egan of Good’s Livestock; and (not pictured) Travis Eby of M.H. Eby Inc. Initially the lamb was sold at the FFA Foundation golf outing during the summer and then donated back to the exhibitor to finish raising it and selling it again at the New Holland Fair. Alan and Carol Diffenbach have donated their time as auctioneers for each of the 20 years. Over the years, the scholarship animal changed from a lamb to a goat at the request of Herr, who downsized and shifted his operation from sheep to goats. Another change was when FFA Alumnus Brian Oberholtzer, purchased the scholarship animal for a new record price per pound. The following year, the committee asked Oberholtzer to sell the scholarship animal at the auction and challenged him to sell it for more than he had

paid the year before. In some years, two scholarships were awarded and in some years none were awarded. Scholarship recipients include Cory Simo, 1998; Becki Day, 1999; Rachel Day, 2000; Michael Hoshour, 2001; Rebecca Highley Moseman, 2002; Sheldon Zimmerman, 2003; Sarah L. Robert D. Herr began as a young agriculture teacher at Garden Spot High School in 1959. Herr was the Grassland FFA founding adviser and was known for many things, especially his passion for livestock in general and sheep and goats in particular. Upon Herr’s retirement, Bob Lauffer decided to honor Herr with an annual scholarship in Herr’s name. The scholarship involved FFA members raising and showing a market lamb. The idea was to promote the showing of livestock within the Grassland FFA while simultaneously raising money for a scholarship. Herr also announced that he and his wife, Betty, would donate a market lamb to a member of the Grassland FFA to show as part of their supervised agricultural experience (SAE). The Herrs donated a scholarship lamb and later a scholarship goat to a Grassland FFA member each year and also a “buddy animal,” which was sold to the scholarship recipient for a nominal fee that was also donated to the scholarship fund. Herr has continued the tradition of donating a market goat to a member of the Grassland chapter, and the scholarship is now in its 20th year. The exhibitor is chosen by a committee after completing an application. The scholarship is awarded to a senior member of the Grassland FFA who has become eligible by showing livestock as part of their FFA SAE Program and/or who intends to attend college in either agricultural education or animal sciences.
