GSPA To Stage “Best Christmas Pageant Ever” By Ann Mead Ash
Josh Martin, director of the Garden Spot Performing Arts (GSPA) fall play, had never heard of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” but when students in GSPA began requesting the lighthearted show with a serious message, Martin decided the time had come to tell an overtly Christmas tale in a one-hour, family-friendly format. “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” will be presented at Garden Spot High School (GSHS), 669 E. Main St., New Holland, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, and Saturday, Nov. 23, as well as at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24. The fast-moving story is based on a children’s book by Barbara Robinson from the late 1970s that was turned into a television movie in the early 1980s and eventually adapted to a stage play. Joel Jakubowski knows what often happens when a friend or family member becomes addicted. “The most common response is to enable, which keeps people stuck (in addiction),” said Jakubowski, adding, “We think it’s helping, but it’s not.” Working with TTC/Potter’s House and other local organizations, Jakubowski will give advice on how to motivate a person dealing with an addiction to move forward when he speaks on the topic of “Enabling vs. Support” at the fall awareness seminar to be held at Conestoga Church of the Brethren (COB), 141 E. Main St., Leola, on Thursday, Nov. 21, beginning at See Awareness Seminar pg 2
Cavod To Present “The Gifts Of The Magi” By Ann Mead Ash
Cordell Huyard, who is directing Cavod Theatre’s “The Gifts of the Magi” this holiday season, is amazed that the organization has not produced the musical before this. “It’s perfect for our stage,” said Huyard. “It fits like a glove.” Music director Amy Rau was the first to suggest the show to Huyard. “I fell in love with it,” said Huyard of the show, which will play at the theater, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Dec. 6 and 13; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 7 and 14; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 8 and 15. The show will be choreographed by Stephanie Morales. The musical adaptation is based on a short story by O. Henry set in the early 1900s. The play focuses on a young husband and wife who have few funds but each wants to buy the other a special Christmas gift. The story contains an important lesson about gift-giving and

6:30 p.m. In addition to speaking, Jakubowski will lead a panel discussion, including a time for questions from the audience. Panel members will be Eric Comp, Randy Steffy, pastor Ken Reinford, and addiction professional Samuel Mwangi. A number of local organizations that work to fight addiction will have displays at the event, including CCARS (Community Care and Addiction Recovery Services), ELANCO Celebrate Recovery, TTC/Potter’s House, and PALS (Parents of Addicted Loved Ones). Jakubowski has extensive education and experience in the area of addiction. He entered long-term treatment in 2003. He went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in behavioral health and addictions studies from Alvernia University and his master’s in organizational leadership from Clarks Summit University. He has completed his doctoral course work in behavioral health organizational leadership at Grand Canyon University, and he is a certified minister, certified alcohol and drug counselor, certified intervention professional, and certified recovery specialist. According to Jakubowski, the idea behind the seminar is to provide information to individuals who have friends or family grappling with addiction. “(We will look at) some unhealthy methods, specifically enabling, that are common responses to someone in addiction,” said Jakubowski. “(For instance), a person in addiction creates a plight about why they have no money, and the friend or loved one gives them money for that reason, and then the money is spent on drugs.” Real help comes in the form of speaking the truth in love, according to Jakubowski. “There has to be a counterintuitive duty of love versus the emotional feelings,” he said. “Sometimes that can be difficult (because) it is totally counterintuitive,” explained Jakubowski, who added that trying to help in ways that enable can only worsen the problem. “The intuitive thing is to grab on tighter. Not only does that not assist people in getting well, it actually keeps people in their addiction longer and with a greater level of sickness,” he said. “It helps the addiction to progress.”
Bethlehem Bus Trip Scheduled Ephrata Cloister Associates will sponsor a trip to historic Bethlehem, Christmas City USA, on Friday, Dec. 6. The bus will depart from Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, at 10 a.m. The day will begin with a visit to Bethlehem’s Christkindlmarkt. The holiday event will feature more than 150 artisans, Christmas music, ice carving, glassblowing demonstrations, and collectibles from Germany. The trip will also feature a tour of the Trees of Historic Bethlehem as well as the “PURSEonality” exhibition with corresponding purses, clutches, and handbags from the private collection of Ilene Hochberg Wood. Lunch will take place at the 1758 Tavern at the Sun Inn, a Colonial-style American eatery with original, rustic decor and a storied past. After lunch, attendees will have time on their own at the Christmas City Village open-air festival featuring quality crafts and authentic German foods and vendors camped in handmade wooden booths. The day will end with the “Bethlehem by Night” tour at 5:30 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, readers may contact Drew Myers at 717-314-2445. The per-person cost includes admissions, lunch, and motorcoach transportation.
He noted that misconceptions about addiction also interfere with overcoming addiction. “It’s such a stigmatic issue (that) some people feel by coming (to a seminar) they will be identified with that issue,” said Jakubowski. “We need to get people to understand that we have to break down those barriers so people can get well. Education removes the stigma.” According to Jakubowski, many families in the United States are experiencing addiction first or second hand. “We are not alone in this,” said Jakubowski, who added that seminars help bring community members together to find solutions. “We find the remedy through our unification as a community,” he shared. “These things are empowering.” Jere Cassel, pastor of Conestoga COB, said that the church has become involved in holding seminars that are based on Scripture. “Ephesians 4 reminds us that we are part of the body of Christ,” said Cassel.
Joel Jakubowski
“Conestoga COB … has been able to step into an area of ministry that needed strengthening in eastern Lancaster County. Our location and facility seems to be in the right place for addiction awareness and the
counseling needs of our area.” Readers who have questions about the seminar may call 717-826-1154. More information about TTC/Potter’s House may be found at http://transitiontocommunity.com.

“The story takes place in an average allAmerican town,” said Martin. Martin explained that in the town, a church holds the same Christmas pageant each year. This year, however, through a strange series of events, the six Herdman children are somehow placed in the lead roles in the Christmas pageant. The Herdman’s - Ralph, played by Andrew Jones; Imogene, played by Rebekah Lowenthal; Leroy, played by Jaxon Kulp; Claude, played by Tanner Donahue; Olive, played by Sarah Babb; and Gladys, played by Hannah Lowenthal - are known for setting fire to sheds, blackmailing townspeople for their jewelry, and even smacking a few folks upside the head. The Herdmans have never heard of Christmas, but they quickly decide to put their own spin on the show. “Everyone is bracing themselves for disaster and mayhem, but at the end there is a twist, and it’s really kind of the moral of the story,” said Martin. “It’s about welcoming people into church and into the community.” According to Martin, the show seems simple, but it is not without challenges. “Usually we are asking our students to play roles where they are older, but in this case, we are asking some to play younger children and to be squirrelly and to misbehave,” said Martin. “(It’s) the opposite of what we are normally asking (students to do).” Martin explained that students who play children in the show will have the chance to be rowdy and rambunctious on stage, but that does not mean that it will be any less demanding of the actors. “We want to make sure the quality is there and that we inject it with as much heart as possible,” said Martin. “It’s a touching message, but we don’t want it to be cheesy or contrived. We want it to be genuine.” Martin said that the brevity of the play is allowing the cast members to have fun with the production. “It’s an adjustment to do a one-hour play (because) we can go through the show twice in one (rehearsal),” he said. “We can add as much flavor and detail and nuance (as we want).” Presenting a show that is accessible to families at the holiday season is important to Martin. “It’s important to expose young children to theater,” he said, adding, “The Christmas story and the story of welcoming strangers and people who are different from you is timely. We will help (audience members) get into the spirit.” Martin reported that refreshments available for purchase at the show will include Christmas cookies. In the spirit of the season, GSPA officers have also decided to donate the proceeds from the Nov. 22 show to the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center Food Pantry. Audience members may bring nonperishable food items to donate to the pantry in lieu of purchasing tickets for the Nov. 22 performance. In addition, new and gently used children’s books will be accepted at each show. The books will be donated to the ELANCO Library to be given away by library director Heather Smith whenever she makes a book bike visit. All seating for the fall show will be general admission with one nominal cost per adult, student, or child. Tickets for the show may be purchased in advance by calling 717-354-1584 or at the door before each performance.

Garden Spot moved into the PIAA Class 3A state playoffs as the runnerup from District Three. The Spartans battled but came up short against Palmyra at Central York High School on Saturday, November 2, in the District Three 3A title match. The Cougars stayed unbeaten (21-0) with a 25-16 victory in the first set and two close wins - each by a 25-23 margin - to sweep the Spartans, who took an 18-3 record into states. “Palmyra has a tough squad,” said Spartans’ first-year head coach Lauren DiPiano. “We played them during the regular season. We knew what to expect. They are good at staying in the system. “We didn’t pass as well as we usually do,” DiPiano added. “We made some late runs and got close only wound up losing the last two sets by two points.” Taylor McInerney led the Cougars with 14 kills while Allie Stovall added 11 as the Spartans kept fighting back in the second and third sets. Logan Martin, who also registered
one block, and Olivia Usner each recorded nine kills for Garden Spot. Julia Ellsworth also had a solo block. Alexandra King served up three aces, Kelly Martin and Hallie Butler contributed seven digs each and Abigail O’Neill led the team with 19 assists. For the opening round of states, the Spartans took a long bus ride to Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre where they faced District Two champ Western Wayne. The Spartans, once on the court, seemed unaffected by the long drive as they topped the Wildcats’ 3-0 in a Tuesday evening match. The Spartans won 25-16, 257 and 25-13. “We were trying to regroup and to play our game,” said DiPiano, whose squad was trying to do just that about 72 hours following a district title match defeat. “We put the Palmyra match behind us - didn’t dwell on the loss and focused on the fact that there’s a lot more volleyball to be played. We regained confidence in our practices.” The loss was 72 hours behind them and the driving distance was 72 miles more than the Wildcats’

Wilkes University student pharmacist Dylan Fox of Denver was part of the winning student team from the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy to receive the 2019 Public Relations and Awareness Award from the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association (PPA). The students were recognized at the organization’s annual conference on Sept. 21. The 2019 Public Relations and Awareness Award recognizes the school that worked at scheduling and holding various public awareness and community activities promoting the role of the pharmacist, particularly focusing on participation in
the Generation Rx and Katy’s Kids programs. In recognition of its efforts, the school received a commemorative plaque and a $200 cash prize. Generation Rx events focus on the current opioid and substance abuse issues, and Katy’s Kids brings the message to younger children that medications are important but they are not candy and that safety is important. Points were also awarded based on communications activities with the association through a variety of communications materials, social media posts, and media outreach.

drive. “There were a few nerves, trying to feel out Western Wayne,” said DiPiano. “They were closer and had a bigger crowd. We were trying to find our rhythm in that big playing atmosphere.” Finding the rhythm they did with O’Neill dishing out 23 assists. “Abby O’Neill had nine aces which, for a three-set match, is incredible,” DiPiano said. “If you’re not having to play the ball after it’s served, it becomes an easier game. “Abby is the quarterback of the team,” continued the coach. “She did very well at the service line. She motivates the team and does a great job executing and finding our hitters in the biggest moments.” Martin had 11 kills. Butler came
through with six and Usner finished with five. Ellsworth and Elyse Mundorff contributed one block each while Kelly Martin led the team with seven digs. “Our girls did an excellent job serving and passing,” DiPiano added. “Our hitters did a great job executing. We got momentum, quieted their crowd, and got our fans involved which helped.” The victory advances the Spartans (19-3) to play District One champ Pope John Paul II in the quarterfinals. “They are really coming together as a group in the playoffs,” DiPiano said. “You talk about goals for the season at the start of the season. The girls have put in the hard work and we’re seeing the fruits of their labor.”

this version features the music of Stephen Sondheim and mixes other stories by O. Henry into the script as subplots. “Fans of O. Henry will recognize (the tales),” said Huyard. Some of the cast members are Cavod Theatre veterans, such as Caleb Heckman as Jim, the husband. Others, including Pilisa Mackey, a Lancaster Bible College theater program graduate who plays Della, the wife, are new to Cavod. Other characters include Steve Rau as Willy, a newspaper man and narrator of the show, and Moses Mariscal as Soapy, a man who is homeless by choice and who is trying unsuccessfully to get arrested so he will not be on the streets during Christmas. A cast of characters are played by Kalor Long as the City Him and Hannah Rau as the City Her. Huyard lauded the talents of the pair, who will take turns appearing as a police officer, a French waiter, a posh store owner, and an angry woman from the Bronx. Challenges of staging the play include each cast member playing a character that is larger than life and the complexity of the musical score. “The music is incredibly difficult, and each cast member is carrying a lot,” said Huyard, who added that the “smart, talented” cast members are on track. “They bring a wealth of experience and skills to the show,” said Huyard, adding, “The play highlights the strength of each person in the production team.” While some shows are strictly datenight fodder and others lend themselves to family fare, Huyard insists that at about 90 minutes in length, “The Gifts of the Magi” offers both. “It has beautiful moments of romance, (but) the grandchildren will love this and be laughing,” said Huyard. “The show moves quickly. There’s never a dead moment.” The production also refuses to waver from the truth behind the holiday. “The show starts off with this beautiful song about the true meaning of Christmas,” said Huyard, referencing the three kings who brought costly gifts to Jesus. “They sing a beautiful medley of ‘Gloria,’” he added. “(The song) gets audience members in the mindset of thinking about the most sacrificial love in human history … God coming down and taking human form and being born in a manger to take away the sins of the world.” Huyard went on to note that the story of the young married couple mirrors the sacrificial love of Christ. “(In the end), they see that the love they have for each other is more important than the gifts, (just as) the magi brought these amazing gifts but they recognized that the most glorious thing in the manger was the love of God,” said Huyard. Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may be available at the door for a higher price.

Intergenerational Program from pg 1 of the GSV woodshop responded. During the summer of 2018, Clisham and Knepper met and decided to run a program for fifth- and sixth-grade students one hour each week for four weeks. “That would allow for enough time to complete a project for each student,” said Clisham. The first session began in March 2019. Knepper put out the call for volunteers from GSV to help the 16 participants learn some rudimentary woodworking skills. “The students may choose to make one of several different items,” said Knepper, who listed a paper towel kit, a tool box, a book case or napkin holder, a stool, and two types of birdhouses as projects students could choose to make. This fall, when the program ran from the week of Sept. 30 to the week of Oct. 28, 21 students were divided into groups to work with each of seven volunteers from GSV.

“This is an opportunity for us to teach them about woodworking and how to use various tools safely,” said Knepper, who added that the spring session went so well that several of the spring volunteers returned to work with students again in the fall. “The children were well behaved,” he recalled. “No problems with discipline, and they seemed to be really interested in the different processes.” The volunteers begin by showing students samples of the finished projects. “They teach them to read the plans and understand the dimensions,” noted Knepper. While only woodshop members operate the power equipment, students learn to measure, sand, drill, hammer, and hone other skills that are necessary to complete the project. Knepper emphasized that volunteers, a few of whom are retired teachers, take time

to allow students to ask questions. Clisham noted that the students gain more than woodworking skills from the experience. “(The students meet) someone (they can) work with weekly that they can look up to as a role model and to build memories with (and who can) answer their questions and spark their curiosity. They also get to hear about (the volunteer’s) life experiences that many find very interesting.” Some of the volunteers hope that a serious interest in carpentry may be ignited for some of the students. “There’s a need for carpenters in the workforce in this area,” said Knepper. “Maybe some of them will pursue this.” Volunteer Gordon Lash agreed. “I think it’s fun to watch the kids do something creative … but it’s broader. He added that the students are not the only ones who benefit. “(The volunteers) who have done it before felt that they got something out of it,” he said. “I felt good about it, and we are willing to do it again.”

The Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) has announced that the eighth annual Extraordinary Give will take place on Friday, Nov. 22. On that day, from midnight to 11:59 p.m., individuals can visit www.ExtraGive.org, choose from more than 500 local nonprofit organizations, make a secure online donation, and have their gift stretched through a stretch pool of at least $500,000. Also, an additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered to participating nonprofit organizations throughout the day in the form of various incentive structures. The funds for the stretch pool and the prizes are available thanks to the LCCF and presenting sponsors Rodgers & Associates, High Foundation, and additional corporate sponsors. The 2018 Extraordinary Give was a record-breaking day, generating $10.2 million from more than 23,500 donors to support 493 nonprofit organizations. Since the event started in 2012, the Extraordinary Give has engaged more than 30,000 people in giving, supported more than 500 nonprofits, and raised $42 million for the community. New for the 2019 Extraordinary Give, the minimum gift amount has been reduced from $25 to $10. The change was made with the goal of inspiring more individuals to participate and generating more engagement from across the region. The new minimum amount aligns with the Community Foundation strategic priority of inclusion and aims to continue increasing the number of unique donors who make a gift during the event. A number of returning features are planned this year, as well. The Extraordinary Give will again offer an opportunity for individuals to leverage their social media networks in support of a nonprofit they care about by becoming a “Fundraising Champion.” Fundraising Champions may activate their personal networks to generate giving for the causes they care about using a personal link. To become a Fundraising Champion, readers may visit www.extragive.org, find their favorite organization, and choose the button that says “Fundraise.”
