Ministerium Plans Holiday Service By Ann Mead Ash
One hallmark of the ELANCO Ministerium Community Thanksgiving Eve Service is that over the many years that the community has gathered to give thanks, the event has been held at a different area church each year. Another tradition is to focus on a local ministry. The 2018 annual community Thanksgiving Eve Service will be held at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, on Wednesday, Nov. 21, beginning at 7 p.m. The speaker for the evening will be
the Rev. Donald Sweimler, chaplain at Lighthouse Vocational Services (LVS). LVS, located at 144 Orlan Road, New Holland, provides a Christ-centered environment for individuals with disabilities to engage in vocational development and find employment opportunities. The title of Sweimler’s sermon is “Be Anxious for Nothing.” Those who attend are invited to bring food items to support the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center. Food items that are needed by the Food and Nutrition Center include canned fruit, pancake mix, pancake syrup, canned pasta, spaghetti sauce, jelly, canned meats, stuffing mix, and boxed potatoes. Personal care items that may be donated include shampoo and deodorant. See Special Service pg 16

Merv Lapp (right), manager of HayLoft Ice Cream, and his wife, Carol, are helping to support the Allegany Boys Camp through their work at the nonprofit Leola store, which sells ice cream, sandwiches, candles, and more.
Many area children and their parents will remember visiting HayLoft Candles at 95 S. Groffdale Road, Leola. For years, the location was the site of a petting zoo and a place to buy ice cream treats and scented candles. In the spring, HayLoft Ice Cream, at the same location, became a nonprofit organization raising funds to help troubled boys find success. “We opened May 14 with the sole purpose of supporting the Allegany Boys Camp,” explained Merv Lapp, manager of HayLoft, who added that all the on-site staff except the managers are volunteers. See HayLoft Ice Cream pg 7
Staffers and campers have been enjoying the experience offered by Aaron’s Acres, a camp that celebrates the capabilities of children with special needs, for 20 years. The organization will hold a gala in honor of those two decades of service on Dec. 8. By Ann Mead Ash
“We are celebrating our past and looking to the future,” said Aaron’s Acres executive director Risa Paskoff. “We are where we are because of the community and the support (it provides). It has been an amazing journey, and it’s
because people believe in us.” To celebrate its history and its future, the organization will hold its first gala at the Bolger Conference Center in Gordiner Hall at Millersville University, 40 James St., Millersville, on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 6 p.m. The event has sold out of all 200 tickets. The Thanksgiving Day run was started in 1992 by former camp program director Buzz Tyson, who is now director of the Lighthouse Youth Center in Oxford. The Turkey Bowl is sponsored by
local businesses. Proceeds from the event are used to benefit Tel Hai Camp and Retreat, a nonprofit Christian camp that is a member of the Christian Camping and Conference Association. Stauffer Celebrates 100th Birthday Mary Sensenig Stauffer turned 100 years old on Oct. 28. Friends and family came to Fairmount in Ephrata, where Mary lives, to celebrate the occasion. Mary also received a visit from state Sen. Ryan P. Aument, who awarded her with a citation from the state of Pennsylvania. Mary was born at home in Frysville during World War I
and the 1918 flu epidemic. She married Ivan Stauffer in April 1944, and they had been married for 66 years when Ivan passed away in 2010. They had five children, 10 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. Mary is the last of her siblings still living. Ivan and Mary and their family lived on a farm between Mar-
tindale and Red Run, raising a variety of animals and enjoying flower and vegetable gardening. Mary was an avid quilter until the age of 88, and she also enjoyed sewing, smocking, baking, and reading. She was a member of the Blue Ball Church of the Brethren, where she served as a deacon’s wife, taught Sunday school and Bible
school, hosted evangelists, and participated in the sewing circle. She attributes her good health and vitality to drinking goat’s milk most of her adult life and to following Exodus 20:12, which focuses on honoring one’s parents. For more information about Fairmount, readers may visit www.FairmountHomes.org.

The special guest speaker for the gala will be Kyle Maynard, who was born with a condition called congenital amputation that left him with arms that end at the elbows and legs that end near his knees. “When he was born, his parents were told (by experts) that nothing would become of him,” said Paskoff. “(But) his parents told him he could do whatever he wanted to.” Maynard learned to move without prosthetics, and eventually became a champion wrestler, a CrossFit-certified instructor and gym owner, a competitive MMA/Brazilian jiujitsu fighter, a world record-setting weightlifter, and a skilled mountaineer. Maynard is also a motivational speaker, bestselling author, entrepreneur, and ESPY award-winning mixed martial arts athlete. Paskoff recalled the genesis of Aaron’s Acres more than 20 years ago, when a group of parents of children with special needs were talking about the need for camping programs for their children. “(I read) this article on Janiece Seldomridge (one of the founding parents), raising her son Aaron, who has autism,” explained Paskoff. “In the middle of the article, there were two sentences (about how the) parents were looking to start a camp.” At the time, Paskoff had a counseling and therapy practice for children, but her dream was to run programs for children with special needs. “I met with Janiece and Peggy Rosario, who was with Special Kids Network, a program of United Disability Services,” said Paskoff. “We held the (first) one-week camp (in 1998) at the Jewish Community Center for 11 children ages 5 to 9.” Paskoff said that in 1999, the camp ran for two weeks. Camps later opened opened in Berks County and Dauphin County. Since then, the program has

expanded. “(Aaron’s Acres) has grown over the years because of the support and because of what the parents tell us (they want for their children),” said Paskoff. “(The parents) wanted schoolyear programs in addition to camp, so now we have a program during the school year.” Recently, parents were concerned because their children aged out of Aaron’s Acres at age 21, so in January 2019, Aaron’s Acres Plus for 22- to 30-year-olds will be offered. When the Jewish Community Center closed in 2014, the camp moved to the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park, where it is still held. The most recent six-week camp served 220 children from three counties. “Everyone comes to Manheim now, and we provide transportation from Berks and Dauphin,” explained Paskoff. The camp can serve any child regardless of medical or behavioral challenges because Paskoff recruits professional staff, including special education teachers and a nurse, for a 1-to-1 or 1-to-2 staff-tochild ratio. Looking ahead, Paskoff noted that Aaron’s Acres hopes to offer more services for children and adults with special needs. “We are hoping to continue to expand our programs (in the future),” said Paskoff. Aaron’s Acres is participating in the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 16. “We will be at the Harvest Moon Bagel Company from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. (that day),” said Paskoff, who added that the shop is creating a signature bagel called the Aaron’s Acres bagel, which will be cinnamon flavored with apple pie cream cheese. From 4:30 to 8 p.m., Aaron’s Acres representatives will be at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince, St., Lancaster. Readers who would like to know more about the organization and its programs may visit www.aaronsacres.org.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster County recently hosted its annual Heroes Gala and benefit auction on Sept. 28. The event raised nearly $100,000 to benefit neglected children. During the event, the Lancaster 8 Ball League and Riverside Camping Association each received the Hero in the Life of a Child Award for their generous commitment to the success of the community’s most vulnerable youths. CASA volunteer advocate Dianna Wills was named the Clark Family Foundation Volunteer of the Year for her work on behalf of abused and neglected children. She has advocated for the same child since May 2015. Readers may contact 717208-3280 or casa@casalancaster .org to learn more about how to help Lancaster County become a place where every child grows up in a home free of abuse and neglect.

gelato, sundaes, milkshakes, and ice shakes are also featured on the dessert menu. The offerings at HayLoft are not restricted to sweet treats, however. “We have salads and yogurt parfaits, said Lapp, who stated that sandwich wraps and soup will likely be added during the winter months. Soft pretzels are made at the facility, and pretzel sandwich flavors including chicken and ranch, ham and cheese sandwiches, pepperoni, and hot dog are on the menu. In the shop, HayLoft sells a variety of scented candles as in the past, but other items are available as well, including books, dipping mustards, and old-fashioned types of candy. Outside a duck pond is featured, and visitors may purchase pellets to feed the water fowl. Lapp noted that plans for the location include adding a playground on one corner of the property. HayLoft began the transition to a nonprofit entity when Dave Yoder, who owned the ice cream shop and still owns the building, approached the Allegany Boys Camp board and asked if the group wanted to utilize the building. “It had been the vision of the board to do something like this, noted Lapp. The Allegany board set up a board of six to oversee the HayLoft project. One of the board members knew Lapp from church and asked if he would consider becoming the manager. According to Lapp, HayLoft is currently open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays, but he added that those hours will probably be adjusted during the winter months. Readers who wish to know more about HayLoft may visit www.hayloftice cream.com or search for “HayLoft Ice Cream on Facebook.
A $750,000 grant was awarded to the Salvation Army of Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware to support the Pathway of Hope initiative. This grant will cover program costs in York, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Reading, and Carlisle. It will also allow the Salvation Army to launch Pathway of Hope programs in Boyertown, Norristown, Pottstown, and Levittown starting in January 2019. The Pathway of Hope initiative focuses on the long-term goal of self-sufficiency of impoverished families, intended to break the cycle of crisis and

intergenerational poverty. Families who are motivated and committed to take the necessary steps to improve their lives will work with a Salvation Army case manager for social and spiritual support. They will also be connected with services for jobs, health, housing, child care, education, and legal services. The Salvation Army of Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware’s Pathway of Hope initiative is currently assisting families in 17 communities throughout the two regions. To date, it has served 162 families, including 232 adults and 394 children.

Allegany Boys Camp, located in Oldtown, Md., was founded in 2011 as an expansion of Bald Eagle Boys Camp in Mill Hall, Pa. “They cater to troubled boys ages 9 to 16, and they work with them for up to two years, said Lapp. Allegany operates with the understanding that all young men wish to succeed, but that all boys may not have the emotional tools needed to control behavior when faced with challenging events. In a wilderness setting, campers learn how to build their own shelter, where they may live for up to two years. Physical resources to build the structure and firewood for heat and cooking are provided. HayLoft has a structure built by the boys on display so customers can get an idea of how the boys live. “A group of the boys came up here and put that together for us, noted Lapp. While at Allegany, the boys learn to build relationships as well as shelter. Campers are counseled and supervised by Christian men, and positive peer pressure is encouraged as successes and failures are evaluated. Hands-on learning experiences are offered, along with team-building exercises and support in the development of healthy relationships. “They (work at) problem solving as a group, said Lapp, who described regular meetings called “powwows, where campers discuss their day and learn to work through problems. “Each camper sets goals to work toward, added Lapp. Bald Eagle Boys Camp is supported by an eatery in Mill Hall called the Ice Shack, and now Allegany has HayLoft, which sells Italian ice made on the premises, along with 16 flavors of handdipped ice cream. “We have softserve in vanilla, chocolate, and twist, said Lapp, who added that

and one of the last remaining artists from the golden age of Disney animation. The film shows how Wong overcame a life of poverty and racism to become a celebrated painter who once exhibited with Picasso. Previously unseen art and interviews with Wong, movie clips, and archival footage illustrate how his unique style is found in everything from Disney animation and liveaction Hollywood studio films to Christmas cards, kites, and handpainted California dinnerware to fine art and Depression-era WPA paintings. The film also features new interviews with his daughters and fellow artists/designers. Tickets will be discounted for students. Serving A Good Old-Fashioned
For a number of years, Music for Everyone’s Keys for the City program has placed pianos in various locations throughout downtown Lancaster during the warmer months. This summer, there were 12 brightly colored pianos decorated by local artists stationed throughout the city. Each piano, sponsored by local businesses or nonprofits, was placed in the city in mid-May and removed in the fall. A local piano class of eight adult musicians, many of whom are retired, visited the pianos on two occassions over the summer to test out their performance skills. With about two years of lessons under their belts, the group members played a few tunes solo or in tandem at one of the pianos before moving on to the next piano. The songs ranged from

In May, when Downing Jacobs, president-elect of the Rotary Club of Paradise, was assigned to schedule the club program, he knew right away that he would ask his friend Travis Wetzel, a musician, to perform his Civil War show for the group. “I heard it at the Reading Historical Society last year,â€? said Jacobs, who plays guitar with Wetzel. “I knew all the songs, and ‌ I knew he would impress everybody.â€? What Jacobs did not anticipate was how soon after the presentation the other club members would suggest that they enlist Wetzel’s talents for a benefit concert under the group’s sponsorship. Jacobs and Wetzel quickly agreed, and the Rotary Club of Paradise will present the Travis Wetzel and Friends Bluegrass Experience on Friday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. at Conestoga Valley’s Gerald G. Huesken Middle School, 500 Mount Sidney Road, Lancaster.
been involved with WEGave, an organization that helps veterans to take part in music therapy activities. For the Rotary concert, Jacobs said that Wetzel will give his Bluegrass Experience concert, which will include songs in the bluegrass and gospel styles, along with some Civil War-era songs. In addition to Jacobs on guitar, others performing with Wetzel will include native Pennsylvanians Bob Sutor on banjo and Ron Greenstein on string bass. For this year, the concert will replace the Rotary Club’s Amish Classic bike ride. The ride was held in partnership with Bird-inHand Volunteer Fire Company’s the Run, Ride, and Soar event, which included a 5K race; a half marathon; 12-, 23-, and 62-mile bicycle rides; and a hot air balloon fest. The club hopes to possibly organize the Amish Classic

PARADISE FIRE COMPANY 5 Hershey Avenue, Paradise, PA 17562

Like many of the homes in Marietta, Cynthia McComsey’s East Market Street abode boasts quite an expansive history. Stone mason Joseph Hopkins built the two-story log cabin between 1810 and 1815 after having purchased the plot of land from Andrew and Esther Hershey. The Hersheys had bought the plot in 1804 from none other than David Cook, the founder of Marietta’s east section, known as New Haven. Hopkins covered the cabin with pebble-dash stucco before selling it to grocer Samuel Hipple, who split the property into two rental units. Today, utilizing furniture that provides maximal storage space is McComsey’s key for making the most of the small space. The home’s interior features antique furnishings, redware and yellowware, and a collection of original pieces of artwork, amidst the low ceilings and wide-plank flooring. Her house will be one of the eight private homes appearing on the 53rd annual Marietta Candlelight Tour of Homes, set to take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2. Presented by Marietta Restoration Associates (MRA), the self-guided tour will feature local homes as well as historic buildings including St. John’s Episcopal Church, Union Meeting House, Old Town Hall,

Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation (LOHF) approved funding to five Lancaster County children’s behavioral health programs on Sept. 25. These five programs are reaching families and their children who have specific mental health needs and for whom access to mental health care may be particularly challenging. The grants totaled $74,375. Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County was awarded $25,000 to expand a partnership between Domestic Violence Services and COBYS that seeks to improve the mental health of children fleeing domestic violence through the use of an evidence-based model. The Seeking Safety program utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy to explore issues such as trauma, addiction, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The program expansion’s aim is to increase family competency about children’s mental health by aligning the curriculum between parent and child programs and focusing on processing the trauma of
experiencing and witnessing domestic violence. Aaron’s Acres received $11,575 to support Aaron’s Acres Plus, a new program to meet the needs of young adults ages 21 to 26 who have developmental disabilities. The new therapeutic program will focus on socialization and communication for individuals once they have graduated from high school. This program will provide opportunities for individuals to interact with one another and engage in meaningful activities in a community setting. Lancaster Health Center received $15,000 for the Lancaster County Reach Out and Read initiative, which seeks to improve early literacy skills and make early literacy an integral part of pediatric checkups in early childhood. The initiative aims to promote language development in the first five years of life, as well as parentchild shared reading. Lancaster Public Library was awarded $12,800 to connect children and their families to

the library and to offer valuable information from community professionals through the Play, Learn, and Grow Series. Early literacy, nutrition, and child development are a few of the important topics covered during the two five-week sessions. With a focus on non-traditional library users, as well as new and young parents, the workshops foster relationships between community resource providers and those who need them most. Compass Mark received a grant in the amount of $10,000 to expand the Family Services Advocate program that identifies the unique needs and rights of children with incarcerated parents at Lancaster County Prison. Each child receives a needs assessment, case management, and relationship support, along with evaluations before and after receiving services. The program seeks to improve resiliency, connect children and caregivers to community resources, and help mitigate the impact of childhood trauma.
LOHF’s grants aim to elevate children’s mental health by supporting local programs that target one or more of the following: improving the delivery of children’s behavioral health care services; enhancing the capacity of parents, families, and caregivers through trainings and support; and improving the capacity of providers to support and treat children. Applicants are encouraged to replicate existing models that have been successful and to work collaboratively with others to improve mental health services for children and youths from birth to age 26. An additional $100,000 in grant funds will be available in 2019. Online applications are now available and must be submitted online by Friday, March 1, 2019. Tax-exempt community benefit organizations serving Lancaster County are eligible to apply. To learn more, readers may visit www.lohf.org/grants. Readers may also contact Anna Brendle at 717-397-8722 or akennedy@lohfoundation.org for more information.
