New Holland Band To Celebrate With Holiday Pops By Ann Mead Ash

Ken Laudermilch, conductor of the New Holland Band, knows exactly who makes up the market for the band’s Holiday Pops presentation. “The pops is designed for people who want to host their friends, but don’t want to do the dishes after,” said Laudermilch with a chuckle, adding, “We want to foster conversations for families, new friends, and associates around the table enjoying the great food and the beautiful ambiance of the hall.” This year, the New Holland Band will return to Palm Court at DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Lancaster, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street, for the pops program on Friday, Dec. 14, beginning at 7 p.m. The evening will offer hors d’oeuvres and signature desserts to guests who will dine among a number of decorated Christmas trees. The musical program will include solo performances and a number of seasonal favorites in a variety of musical arrangements. After having directed the pops for six years - the 2018 presentation will be the seventh - Laudermilch has become aware of the types of tunes audience

“There are so many wonderful new arrangements of the old favorites, it’s hard to choose,” he mused. To kick off the event, Laudermilch has found a piece by English composer Nigel Hess. “The title is ‘A Christmas Overture,’” noted Laudermilch. “It contains a lot of carols of the season, but (offers) an English composer’s perspective on American carols, and it’s a spectacular opener.” Laudermilch has arranged for soloists to join the band for the performance. West Chester University graduate Sondra Cattich will return to the pops as guest vocalist. “She has the most beautiful alto coloratura voice,” said Laudermilch, who added that Cattich will sing “It’s a Holiday Season” and “Christmas on Broadway,” which is a medley including “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas,” “March of the Toys,” “My Favorite Things,” and more. The other soloist will be saxophonist and fellow West Chester University graduate Chad Smith. According to Laudermilch, Smith, who is originally from Palmyra, has mastered the Rudy Wiedoeft style of saxophone. “Wiedoeft was a sax star of the 1920s and 1930s who played rapid-fire notes,” said Laudermilch. Audience members can also enjoy shows presented by a master illusionist, where they watch his every move and still wonder how he does it. Local residents and visitors can experience on-site dining at the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant & Smorgasbord and treat themselves to a memorable theater experience with friends and family. Currently, the Bird-in-Hand Stage is presenting the new holiday musical “A Christmas to Remember” and also welcoming back the illusions of Brett Myers and “Magic & Wonder of Christmas.” “A Christmas to Remember” will run through Saturday, Dec. 29. In this live holiday musical, Matthew and Mary face unforeseen challenges as the new owners of a thrift store and caregivers of an elderly parent with Alzheimer’s. The play’s intriguing characters, unique situations, and universal themes reveal unexpected treasures in the most unlikely places. Bird-in-Hand Stage welcomes audiences to join in this inspirational journey this Christmas season. During “Magic & Wonder of Christmas,” which will run through Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, Brett Myers and his talented cast combine astounding illusions and heartwarming comedy with the best of the holiday spirit in a journey of joy, hope, and celebration that offers seasonal holiday fun for people of all ages. Attendees may create lifelong memories as they rediscover the wonder and true meaning of Christmas. The Bird-in-Hand Stage is located on the lower level of the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant at 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike in Bird-in-Hand. Discounted tickets with meal packages are also available. For a limited time, readers may use promotional code LOCAL for $5 off tickets to any 2018 Christmas show. To order tickets, readers may call 800-790-4069 or visit www.Bird-inHand.com. The discount is not valid on previous purchases or with other offers, and it will expire on Jan. 1, 2019. Bird-in-Hand Corporation has been celebrating 50 years of Smucker family hospitality in 2018. The Smucker family’s successful experiment with hospitality began in 1968 when family members built a motel in the pasture of their Bird-in-Hand farm. Guests soon found their 30-room Bird-in-Hand Motor Inn along the historic Old Philadelphia Pike, where they enjoyed wide-open spaces and views of farming country. Two years later, the family opened the Bird-in-Hand Motor Inn Restaurant, offering Pennsylvania Dutch foods that were, according to the slogan in 1970, “home cooking at its best.” Customers who stop by the Bird-inHand Family Restaurant through December may enjoy a special 50th anniversary

Lifecycles from pg 1 Sometimes the wide-open road ahead can look impossible to conquer, but the leaders at Lifecycles are all about equipping students to rise to meet whatever challenges may arise. Founded by Lee DeRemer, the nonprofit mentoring program is committed to building young men of character through bicycling and outdoor adventures. One of the ways Lifecycles accomplishes that is through an annual summer challenge ride, and this year was the first time that the program offered two trips. The first summer journey, dubbed the Extreme Challenge Ride, was designed for Lifecycles participants ready for an advanced level of riding. A group of 10 teenage boys and six adult leaders spent one week navigating 330 miles from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., covering more than 60 miles each day and taking in beautiful scenery along the Great Allegheny Passage. A second trip later in the summer to White Sulfur Springs in Bedford was designed as more of a camping trip with daily rides, rather than a trek from one destination to another. Heavy rainfall during that week added to the normal challenges attached to camping and riding. “It rained almost every day, but we just kept reminding the boys every day that attitude is everything,” DeRemer recalled. In addition to offering two summer rides, the 2018 Lifecycles season featured the introduction of a new weekly riding site that met at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. Albert Vega, who had volunteered as a leader for the weekly rides on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Marietta and Landisville, approached DeRemer with the idea of starting another site in the eastern part of the county. “My truck was always full going up to Marietta, and I told Lee that it would be cool to expand,” Vega recalled. “He asked if I’d be willing to lead it, so I began recruiting leaders.” Vega said that is especially amazing to see boys who start out saying that something is too hard go on to conquer the particular ride or obstacle. “We climbed for two days (during the Extreme Challenge Ride), and when we got to mile marker zero in D.C., all the boys were saying, ‘We accomplished it!’” Vega said. “That was really neat, and I love watching the boys see things they’d probably never see unless they were off the grid.” The Garden Spot site led rides on Wednesday evenings from April through November, but Vega said the schedule for 2019 is still in the works. Individuals interested in participating at any of the sites may visit www.lifecyclesteam.org to learn more. “The doors are always open,” DeRemer stated. Rides take place on a weekly basis with extra rides on Saturdays from time to time. Bicycles and helmets are provided, along with a meal. Participation is free and open to boys ages 12 to 18. Following a holiday break, Lifecycles will resume in January with its indoor program on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS), 105 Fairview Ave., Mount Joy. As Lifecycles wrapped up its fourth year of operations, DeRemer said that thus far the organization has tracked a total of more than 77,000 miles ridden - equivalent to more than three times around the planet and over 22,000 volunteer hours and 10,000 meals served. “I’m just floored by this, and we’re already talking about year five,” shared DeRemer. In 2019, Lifecycles plans to implement a teenage bicycling safety certification for those interested. “We have been educating them but wanted to be able to give an official certification,” DeRemer explained. It will allow participants to take a test and become certified through a practicum experience. The summer Extreme Challenge Ride will cover 400 See Cycles pg 7

of,” he said, adding that at Flohr’s he was instrumental in starting a backpack distribution program. He is looking forward to finding ways the congregation can work with CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. Until then, Tom is visiting each member of the church in an effort to get to know the congregation. He also hosts a Sunday morning program called “Christ, Cream-Filled, and a Cup of Coffee.” “We go over the Scriptures we will be talking about (in the service),” explained Tom. Tom said he is excited to move forward with the church. “The people (of St. John) know that without change you start dying. Embracing (the opportunity for change) is our future,” he said, expressing his commitment to the church. “I am here for the long haul,” he added. St. John Center will be celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2019. Plans include having the bishop visit to preach in June and possibly holding a living history service. The church holds a Bible study each Sunday at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship services at 10:15 a.m. Holy Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of each month. influence of those denominations on his flock. “They were sort of a mission church,” Tom recalled. In 2006, the Darrs moved to a church in McKnightstown, just west of Gettysburg, called Flohr’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. They remained at Flohr’s until 2016. “That church was a lot like this one,” said Tom, noting the similarity in the agrarian setting, which included a number of farms and apple orchards. Tom also served briefly at Trinity Lutheran in Topton in Berks County. In the spring of 2018, Tom answered a call to St. John Center. He and Liz visited, and he gave a trial sermon at St. Matthew Lutheran in Lancaster. On Memorial Day weekend, the congregation of St. John Center voted for Tom to become its new pastor. Tom is impressed with the attributes of his new flock. “Even though this is a small congregation, there’s a lot of talent and energy,” he said. “They want to be connected to the community, which is vital to (church) survival.” The church’s interest in serving the community dovetails with Tom’s own mission. “My passion is to make sure children are fed and people are taken care

Tom’s journey to his becoming a pastor and eventually to being installed at St. John Center began in Jacobus, which is south of York. “I grew up there and spent 45 years in that area,” recalled Tom, who was an active member of the United Church of Christ (UCC) as a teenager. Tom entered college in a seeking mode: While becoming a pastor was always in the back of his mind, Tom pursued a career in accounting, attending Milligan College in Tennessee and then York College, followed by marriage and children. In 1996, Tom once again felt the call to become a pastor. “When I announced I would go into seminary, I was the director of cost accounting and budgetary planning for a concern in Emigsville,” said Tom, who had married his second wife, Liz, in 1995. Tom attended Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, S.C., where he earned a Master of Divinity. Tom’s first call was to St. John Lutheran in Clearfield, where he served for nearly three years. Following that post, he took a call to a church called Angel of Joy Lutheran in Lufkin, Texas. The congregation was located in an area where many residents belonged to Baptist and Pentecostal churches, and Tom noted the

Long said that the project will be student driven. “The tiny house is a chance to experience things and get their hands dirty,” said Long, who has charged students with designing the interior starting with concepts and moving to 2-D and 3-D drawings. “We want them to see the process from the beginning to end. Student Sarah Bustillo has been involved in laying out the floorplan for the tiny home, learning to use a 3-D model maker and receiving a crash course in the importance of measuring. “We have learned there are multiple ways to use space,” said Bustillo, who noted that steps can also be storage units and counters can flip up to provide more living space. “You have to be creative.” Student Caleb Heck also collaborated on

those preparing the bus for conversion, cutting bolts to remove seats and completing the arduous process of extricating the wheelchair lift. “The wheelchair lift was bulky and heavy, and we had to look at (removing it) from a different angle,” said Stoltzfus. “We had to think outside the box.” LCCS head of school Peter Hansen pointed out that the tiny house project fits with the mission of the school. “This project is about more than making money,” he noted. “It’s about serving the greater good and how do we as a school help that.” Overall learning goals for the project should reach far beyond the specifics of layout or how to remove bus seats, according to Long. “Our students can experience entrepreneurship by giving them experiences while teaching them principles,” said Long. “We teach basic business principles in a way where they do the process, (because) teaching students to think and solve problems is a big part of what we do.” The project is also designed to teach collaboration skills and business ownership functions. “They are learning to be leaders,” said Long. “We give them the basic skills to run a business (by doing it), and they take risks, but they are using real money, so ideas must be feasible,” Long said. LCCS is governed by a board of directors and managed by the head of school and administrative team. The school offers a Christ-centered and interdenominational curriculum on two campuses for area children in prekindergarten through 12th grade.

the layout process. “I thought the layout aspect would be easy, but after (a short time), I realized it is a meticulous process,” he noted. “What drew me to the project is that we want to teach critical thinking,” explained Long. “How do we create a space that’s efficient (and functional)? Thinking through that process has been awesome.” Long described how one student imagined a coffee table that became a kitchen table and that had storage inside. When the student brought the idea to Long, he said, “Draw it out, and we can build it.” Work on the bus began on Oct. 10, and student Seth Stoltzfus was among

generosity, and American grit.” Sinkovitz lauded the dedication of the John R. Bonfield Elementary School students, saying, “These fifth- and sixthgraders have been some of our biggest supporters since they were in kindergarten, and we thank them for their loyalty and participation.” The master of ceremonies introduced others, some of whom were present, who had made the celebration possible, mentioning Wayne Siegrist, who donated the land on which the park will be built in honor of his father, Raymond Siegrist, who was a World War II veteran. Other attendees who were recognized included Knouse, who with his family has given time, talents, and resources to the endeavor, and former United States Army officer Robert Kornman, designer of the park, construction coordinator, landscape architect, and volunteer. Sinkovitz then introduced Kramer, the keynote speaker, who spoke of Robert Weaver, a United States Navy veteran of the Vietnam era, who had a dream of a memorial park dedicated to honor the sacrifices of Lancaster County’s military veterans. “Today, your dream takes another step toward coming true,” said Kramer, who noted that the support of Sam Lombardo and his wife were also essential to the project. “From its inception, this project has been steered by an all-volunteer group of Lancaster countians,” said Kramer, who added that the project has been completely funded by private donations. “The mission (of this park) is to recognize and pay tribute to the valor of (all) Lancaster Countians who ever wore a United States armed forces uniform and swore to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic,” said Kramer. He emphasized the commitment each veteran makes by recalling the remarks of Ephrata native William “Tom” Hobbins, a retired United States four-star general and the highest ranking officer to emerge from Lancaster County. “When we think of honoring our veterans, we should always recall that the commitment they made requires them to sign a blank check to the American people … payable with their lives,” quoted Kramer. Kramer noted that one intention of the park is to give the 32,000 veterans currently living in Lancaster County a place of peace, repose, and reflection, but he added that it will also be a place to educate young people. “The logo (of the park) is a silhouette of a child saluting the stars and the stripes,” said Kramer. “It’s an enduring graphic statement that it is the future that is the most important.” Gesturing to the Bonfield students, Kramer said, “Today, we are surrounded by the future ... and they are invited to take part (today) to thank them for their loyalty and to mark their essential part in the ongoing saga of American freedom.” Kramer then asked the gathering to give the children of Bonfield a hand. “I charge you now with taking a giant step in the history of the park,” he said as the students who were holding shovels moved the first pieces of earth in the creation of the new place of honor. More information about the park may be found by visiting www.vets honorparklanco.org.

On Nov. 7, fifth- and sixthgrade students from John R. Bonfield Elementary School broke ground for the Veterans Honor Park of Lancaster County, which will be located at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz.
