Hometown Heroes - Serving At CrossNet Feeding New Holland BY ANN MEAD ASH
he last 10 months have been challenging for everyone, but three members of the CrossNet Ministries staff in New Holland have faced the giant of COVID-19 restrictions and endeavored to serve with flexibility and resilience. Amy Marburger, food and nutrition manager, switched to a drivethrough program when COVID hit, taking phone orders and listing client allergies and walking as much as seven-miles per day as she worked with staff members to oversee the food pantry, Power Packs, and Buddy Bags, which provide instant foods for individual children on weekends. Marburger became involved with CrossNet when she began volunteering with the Power Packs program and filling in for the regular manager in 2017. In June of 2018, she was offered the position she now holds, hitting
T
the ground running with the Summer Lunch Program. “Lisa Kerstetter was incredibly helpful in guiding me with the Summer Lunch Program,” recalled Marburger. In June, Marburger was able to switch CrossNet clients to a choice pantry model. “They get a shopping list of quantities, and they take a cart and shop on their own,” said Marburger. “It’s truly free choice now.” Marburger said she is still processing the months of working without volunteers and keeping staff members socially distanced while they packed food items. She said she will be better prepared if that system is required again. W hat amazed Marburger most about the experience were the comments of those she was serving. “The statement I heard consistently was, ‘I don’t really need it, (so) I want to make sure someone else has it.’ That just blew my mind,” she said.
CrossNet Ministry staff members who have gone above and beyond during the COVID-19 crisis include (from left) Amy Marburger, Joan Yunginger, and Aryn Burda.
Aryn Burda is the case and resource manager at CrossNet. Burda has a bachelor’s degree in social work and biblical studies and a minor in intercultural studies from Lancaster Bible College, and she is currently in a master’s program at Alvernia College, studying social work with a concentration in mental health and addiction. More importantly, Burda feels compassion for her fellow humans. “God has given me a passion to hear people’s stories and connect with people,” she said, adding that her goal is to build relationships and connect clients to resources in an effective way. Burda began her career at The Factory Ministries in Paradise in May 2018, moving to CrossNet in March 2019. While her main focus at CrossNet is case management,
A Different Way To Help she also oversees other ministries, including money management, the Getting Ahead program, the diaper ministry, and the transportation ministry. She is a certified trainer with Bridges Out of Poverty. Commenting on COVID, Burda noted, “Life has looked very different, but the needs have also looked different. Overnight we had to rearrange the way we meet people or receive requests.” She added that she and Yunginger navigated how to be responsive rather than reactive. “(COVID) has made me treasure face-to-face meetings even though they are six feet apart and in a mask,” she said. Burda relayed the story of a couple the ministry worked with that moved to New Holland during the crisis. “They were sleeping in their car, and
Joan Yunginger, director of social services with CrossNet, was a fixture at New Holland Elementary School for years. It was there she witnessed the struggles of area families and the work the school nurses did to help them. Around 2000, Yunginger investigated nursing, only to discover it was not for her. Instead, she began taking classes at community college and had a talk with ELANCO School District social worker Kathy Kuhn. The conversation led Yunginger to Drexel University’s adult program, and in 2005, she received her degree in behavioral health with a minor in drug and alcohol counseling. Yunginger completed an internship at CrossNet See Partnerships pg 2

everything they tried, they hit barriers,” she recalled. Working with CrossNet, the couple eventually was able to obtain housing. “We continued to provide options … and they were so intentional with following up,” said Burda. “It was amazing to watch them grow through that experience. (Their) motivation, perseverance, and resilience were inspiring.” Burda acknowledged that the issues of the past months have led to growth. “It exposed the areas I need to grow in and affirmed the areas that are strengths,” she said. “I am really thankful for the other social service agencies (because) it has been a blessing to be able to build on partnerships and relationships.” Readers who would like more information on CrossNet may visit www.elancocross.org.

“We needed to become more educated in how to apply for unemployment,” she recalled, adding that the United Way provided local agencies with Zoom meetings and updates. “It opened up doors for us to partner, and now we are partnering more than we ever did before COVID,” she said. “We are learning how people can access programs, and we’re pointing them in the direction (they need to go).” Because of stays on rent and utilities, Yunginger has seen changes in needs in nonfinancial areas. “ What has increased is the need for counseling, mentoring, and relationship building,” she said.

and at Gaudenzia Vantage House drug and alcohol treatment facility before working for Philhaven. At the same time, she was in conversations with the ELANCO Ministerium about the need for a local agency, which was born as ELANCO Social Services Network (ESSN) around 2011, with Yunginger as director. In 2016, ESSN and CrossNet merged. “COVID changed everything, but it also opened up other doors,” said Yunginger. “ We had to get creative.” Yunginger noted that the organization utilized a variety of technologies from smart phone apps to Facebook to stay in touch with clients.

children and senior professionals in central Pennsylvania, and Fizika Group, a Lancaster-based health and wellness technology company that develops digital health solutions and provides professional development to help at-risk communities thrive, share the goal of helping central Pennsylvania seniors to successfully age in place and stay healthy. HDC MidAtlantic, a nonprofit developer and manager of affordable housing in central Pennsylvania, partnered with Fizika in July to pilot the app with two dozen seniors residents living at HDC’s Duke Manor Apartments and King Theatre Apartments in Lancaster city. The goals of Seniors BlueBook and Fizika Group align closely with HDC’s holistic approach to affordable housing, which includes a strong focus on supporting health and wellness for residents. The Wellness Journal is an extension of Fizikaflex, Fizika’s smart wellness app that helps seniors living in affordable housing communities to improve their health by monitoring daily activities like eating, sleeping and exer-
cising. Users can document their progress in an online journal and share results with their peers. The idea for a print journal emerged from working with HDC staff and residents on the pilot program as a solution for residents who lack technology to fully utilize the app. In response to resident needs, Seniors BlueBook and Fizika also opted to make the journal fully bilingual, and each page features an outlined box with Spanish translation for all activities. The easy-toread 12-page workbook includes ideas to help seniors begin their wellness journeys, including recipes for healthy eating, creative approaches to mindfulness and engaging activities like word searches and word scrambles. Wellness Journals were scheduled to be distributed to 1,300 residents living in housing obtained through affordable housing providers in Lancaster and York counties, including senior residents at 27 HDC MidAtlantic affordable housing communities in Dauphin, Lancaster and York counties. Distribution was planned for November. For more information on the Fizikaflex Wellness Journal, readers may contact Martha Lester Harris at martha@fizikagroup.com. The publication is available for download at www.fizika group.com/wellness-journal.

provides continuing legal education (CLE) to lawyers and judges across the commonwealth. Schwager said Creme was willing to, on a pro bono basis, go above and beyond to tackle PBA legal matters, despite the time commitment required. For example, Schwager said Creme guided the PBA’s shift from a defined employee pension plan to a market-competitive 401(k) plan. As a long-term member and also chair of the PBA Pension Committee, Schwager said Creme saw the unsustainable climb in expenses for the PBA to remain within its former pension plan. The 401(k) plan with some PBA matching of employee contributions carries less cost and less risk for the PBA and provides employees with greater flexibility in their investment options. In addition to his legal support provided to the PBA, Creme is active in nonprofit community organizations. He has served as board chair of the American Red Cross of the Susquehanna Valley, the Lancaster County Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Lancaster Catholic High School. He also has served as a member of the Northeast Service Area Resource Council of the American Red Cross and, in that position, he was responsible for coordinating and providing governance as well as planning counsel and advice to Red Cross chapters in the nine states of the northeast United States and in the Caribbean. The award was presented on Nov. 20 during a meeting of the PBA House of Delegates, the policymaking body of the association. Creme is a 1977 graduate of Dickinson College and a 1980 graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center.

and that was the beginning of many conversations and reflections which ultimately led him to his vocation. Sawicki explained that when seeking to discern one’s vocation, a person should pray. Sawicki has been a priest for 11 years. Sawicki invited deacon Aaron Lynch to join the discussion. Lynch attended public school, started focusing on his Catholic faith in seventh and eighth grades, and entered the seminary right after high school. He is in his final year of seminary. Lynch shared that his studies are important, but it is most rewarding to focus on becoming a good priest. The boys’ presentation also included video segments from some of the other 23 seminarians ages 18 to 62 in the Harrisburg Diocese. They spoke about their favorite parts of seminary and being a priest, such as celebrating Mass and being a spiritual father. The seminarians also emphasized that they have fun, including taking part in flag football and soccer games. The school students were invited to ask questions at the end of the presentation. Lallone, in her presentation to the girls, emphasized that God wants everyone to know the fullness of His love and that each person is given many different gifts and talents through which he or she can help others see God’s love for them. Lallone said that as each person grows, he
