Great things in store

When Steve Ritchey and his family - wife Lori, daughter Logan, and son Landon - took me on a tour of the nearly finished Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, 1279 Main St., East Earl, the watchword for the new facility was “expansion.”

Ground for the new church building was broken in spring of 2023, and as the building nears completion, staff members, including the youth and connections pastor, Landon, and the administrator, Logan, are looking forward to the grand opening during the 9 a.m. service on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025. The congregation began holding services in the new building on Dec. 8. Christmas services will be held at the church at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22, and there will be a Christmas Eve service Tuesday, Dec. 24, at 6 p.m.

“We have a little over 60,000 square feet, but everything is

built to expand,” said Steve, who celebrated 30 years pastoring the church on Dec. 8. “The reason we built this large was because our expectation is that God will do great things and that He has great things in store for our region,” said Steve.

The main entrance will bring visitors into a twostory foyer. The subtly shaded surroundings are done in gray and cream with accent walls in light blue and green colors. Continuity is provided by the gray and black carpet found throughout the building and subway tile accents in white and gray tones.

To the right of the main entrance is a café. Behind the café is an industrial kitchen, which serves both the café and the full gym, which can be set up to seat 300 for a fellowship meal with a staging area for presentations.

“The reason we built this large was because our expectation is that God will do great things.”

Steve explained that the footprint of the downstairs is repeated on the second floor, where five large adult Sunday school classes are located. Other second-floor areas are left open to provide room for growth.

“This will be the sanctuary,” said Steve, stepping on to the stage of the new worship area. “The downstairs will seat 680,” he noted, adding that the balcony, which will open later, will offer seating for hundreds more. The room boasts a built-in baptismal area, a 16-by-10-foot LED wall, two projectors, and two screens. Near the sanctuary will be a parents’ room and a room for nursing moms. Lori pointed out the ADA-compliant chair lift and restrooms.

The first floor of the building also contains a chapel, which will double as an area for youth

events, and a suite of 11 offices, a conference room, and a reception area inside the west entrance to the building. To the right of the sanctuary is a self-contained children’s education area. Logan explained the Sunday school process for children. “The kids go to worship with parents, because we believe it’s important for families to be together and for kids to witness their parents living out their faith,” she said, adding that children will be dismissed to their Sunday school classes after worship. For security purposes, the kids will be checked in by parents at a reception desk of the children’s section. Logan pointed out classrooms that can be subdivided into smaller rooms. Several Jack and Jill bathrooms are included in the area, with some located between classrooms. Lori pointed out that the children’s ministry area, like the offices, has its own kitchenette area for convenience.

On the east side of the first floor is a room that will be a

A maker’s oasis

Welcome Home Thrift & More supports local vendors

Last spring, Welcome Home Thrift & More, located in the IronSpire Complex at 2800 N. Reading Road, Suite 430, Adamstown, held the Oasis Makers Market as a fundraiser. “It took off well,” said Alisha Wambolt, manager of Welcome Home, a thrift store that was originally known as Second Street and founded by Debbie Hollinger to support HOME International, which provides group homes for girls in India.

Alisha shared that her daughter, Maddie, oversaw the fundraiser, attracting 25 vendors to the event. “We thought, ‘What if we were to bring some of those vendors inside our shop?’” explained Alisha. “It would give people who are not thrifters an opportunity to shop local.” Alisha and Maddie asked a few of the vendors if they would like to rent spots in the shop, and cleared out an area near the front of the store to begin hosting area makers. “It has gone crazy,” said Alisha of the section of the store now called “The Oasis.”

“I love (this concept) because it is our mission to help those in need, and there’s a different need inside this room,” Alisha pointed out, noting that some of the makers are stay-at-home moms, who would like to use their creativity to contribute to the family budget. “One (vendor) is in her early 50s, and she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease,” said Alisha, who explained that the vendor gave up her job

Volunteers sought for Christmas Bird Counts

The Lancaster County Bird Club will sponsor the Lancaster County Christmas Bird Counts. Citizen scientists may participate in Solanco on Sunday, Dec. 15; in Lancaster on Sunday, Dec. 22; in the Christmas Bird Count for Kids at the Lancaster County Central Park on Dec 22; or in Lititz on Sunday, Dec. 29.

Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count, with much of the legwork done by volunteers. Birders of all skill levels may participate, including backyard bird watchers. The data collected has been used for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and conservation policy.

Tree Tenders training planned

Penn State Extension will offer a Tree Tenders training webinar series on Wednesdays, Jan. 8 to Feb. 19, from noon to 1 p.m. Through the Tree Tenders training program, developed by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) in partnership with Penn State Extension Urban Foresters, people may gain the skills needed to restore and care for their community’s tree canopy. Individuals learn how to plant, prune, and maintain trees. Tree Tenders work to increase environmental health and sustainability, enhance green spaces, and increase tree cover in neighborhoods across Pennsylvania.

Since 1993, PHS has trained thousands of Tree

Tenders in more than 200 neighborhoods across Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has supported the program since 2004. In 2008, the program expanded to Pittsburgh and smaller metropolitan areas, and by 2013, it became available statewide. Since then, thousands more have been trained throughout Pennsylvania and beyond.

Each participant will receive a printed copy of the Tree Tenders Handbook, published by PHS. To register by Friday, Jan. 3, visit https:// extension.psu.edu/ and search for “Tree Tenders Training.”

ENB staff members accepted the award from the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce.

large food pantry. “We will hold quarterly community meals on the same night the food pantry (is open),” said Logan, who noted that personal products will be available as well. A clothing bank will also be offered periodically. Lori pointed to the office for the food pantry and the covered entryway where recipients may pull up in their cars. The food pantry will be held on the first and third Fridays of each month from 6 to 7 p.m.

On the second floor, five large adult classrooms will be available for classes and meetings. An outdoor living space is located on the east side of the building to enjoy lunches and evening fellowship. “You can see for miles,” shared Logan. With the exception of the adult classrooms, much of the second floor will remain unfinished for now. “This could be the youth sanctuary,” said Steve, gesturing to the large area. “When we outgrow, we will

simply move up here to these unfinished areas,” said Steve. “We just pop windows in then. We don’t know what the Lord will have for this area.”

Landon explained that the café will open each Sunday following the church service for fellowship. “At 11 a.m., we will have Connect Hour,” he said. “Connect Hour is when leadership and discipleship classes for adults will be held, and there will be youth and kids’ ministries meetings.”

In addition, the church will continue to hold a Wednesday night program at 7 p.m., which will include youth and children’s ministry and a service for adults.

Landon also pointed out that the angle of the building is set to be seen by those approaching from several directions. “The building is built at an angle so it can be seen better from Route 23,” he said. Steve stated that those coming from Route 23 East and Route 625 will see the building as they reach the intersection of those roads. “You can see the building from Terre Hill,” added Landon.

The Garden Spot girls’ volleyball team supported breast cancer awareness during its match against Warwick on Oct. 3. Before the match started, the team presented pink roses to spectators who had been affected by the disease. In addition, the booster club sold Pink Out T-shirts and hosted a bake sale. More than $580 was raised and donated to the PA Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC) in Lebanon. On the court, both the varsity and junior varsity teams swept Warwick in three sets.

The PBCC was founded in 1993 and has contributed $5.5 million to breast cancer research. The organization also sends free Friends Like Me care packages to newly diagnosed women. More information can be found at www.pabreastcancer.org.

On Oct. 4, the volleyball team volunteered at CrossNet Ministries in New Holland to help sort coats and clothing from a recent winter coat drive. This was the second time the team supported CrossNet. Before school began, the team helped to fill backpacks with school supplies. Opportunities to support CrossNet can be found at www.elancocross.org.

The varsity team finished its season with an overall record of 16-6, compiling a league/section record of 11-1 and capturing the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 2 Championship. The varsity girls earned the second seed ranking heading into PIAA District 3 playoffs. The team finished fourth in district playoffs, completing its season just shy of qualifying for

the PIAA State Volleyball Tournament.

The junior varsity team finished the season with an overall record of 17-1.

The team members acknowledged the support they received this season from their families, the GS Student Section, and the

community. Mya Paparo’s father, Sean, announced the lineups and pumped up the crowd before each match. Various local businesses sponsored the team, and Nick Smucker of SMKR Graphic Design and Photography captured many memories this season.

Spooknacht, a Lancaster County tradition lost to time

Lancaster County has a long history of unique traditions and community-centered events. From annual celebrations such as Maize and Snitz Fest in Lampeter and East Petersburg’s Blues Festival to county-wide programs like the Miss Lancaster County pageant, every town contributes to the area’s distinct culture. Many annual traditions have withstood the test of time and continue to be held today, but some events, such as Spooknacht, have been lost to time.

In 2024, few people have ever heard of Spooknacht. But prior to the 1970s, the annual event was highly anticipated by community members, and it involved every school in the county.

According to archived photographs and clippings from old newspapers, Spooknacht took place every year around Halloween, and the event was organized by the former Lancaster Jaycees.

One photograph from LancasterHistory’s archive, believed to have been taken during an event circa 1950, shows members of the Jaycees serving food from a vehicle with the words “Jay-cee Schpookmobile”

painted on its side. The only information provided by the caption reads, “Official Lancaster Jaycees Schpookmobile, used during the Spooknacht celebration at Halloween.”

Julia Whitfield, a lifelong resident of Lancaster and manager of Mennonite Life’s visitor center, said she has no memory of Spooknacht. According to Whitfield, most members of Lancaster’s Mennonite community rarely celebrate Halloween or trickor-treat, but instead hold a harvest celebration every fall. Pete Kingsley, one of the former members of the local Jaycees club, said he has no memory of Spooknacht either. After following a trail of old newspaper clippings and bits of information in Willow Street Church’s archive, local historian Eric Schubert discovered that his acquaintance Linda Ross won the Spooknacht Queen contest in 1965.

“It was a big celebration at McCaskey High School that involved all the schools in the county,” said Ross, a Penn Manor High School alumna who now resides in Marietta. “It was accompanied by other activities, but the contest was a huge

deal. It was driven by the Jaycees, and that year’s Miss Pennsylvania and Miss Lancaster always attended.”

Ross recalled that each Lancaster County high school held its own Spooknacht queen contest, during which contestants would display their talents at a school assembly. Students voted on a candidate to send to Spooknacht for the county-wide competition, and contestants in the final pageant showcased a talent and answered questions in front of a panel of judges.

Ross said she does not know when or why the annual event officially stopped taking place. The

origins of Spooknacht began several decades before Ross won in 1965; Ross’ mother won the title of Spooknacht Queen in the 1940s. “I think women just became less interested in participating in beauty pageants,” Ross speculated. “Some people used it as a stepping stone for other contests. I’m a dancer, so I just entered everything I could.”

Lancaster County may never hold a Spooknacht celebration again, but despite vanishing with almost no trace, the bygone tradition will always hold a place in the area’s long history of unique festivities.

and began learning graphic design, which came naturally to her. “She’s making cards.” Another maker is a vet who has PTSD. A display with her story is located along one wall of The Oasis. “The Oasis gives us a chance to come alongside local people and showcase their talents,” Alisha said.

“Maddie does a fantastic job (attracting a) variety of vendors,” shared Alisha. Walking through The Oasis, Alisha pointed out displays of baked goods, slippers, antiques and collectibles, pottery, jewelry, metalwork, plants, herbal teas, soaps, and sweaters. Other displays featured photography, knitted and crocheted items, leather bags and personal-size sewn bags, and pottery in different styles. “We’ve encouraged our vendors to keep in mind that we’re a thrift as they price their

items,” Alisha stated. Creators taking part in The Oasis are not all seasoned businesspeople, according to Alisha. One vendor who makes earrings is 15 years old. “We have a 13-year-old who makes bracelets in a perfect price range for kids,” said Alisha, who noted that the shop currently features about 40 vendors. “We promote them, and they promote us,” she said.

Welcome Home Thrift & More and The Oasis are open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information may be found at http://welcomehome thrift.com.
