A Hot Meal And A Warm Welcome BY ANN MEAD ASH

here is no need to register in advance for the free community meal held monthly at New Holland United Methodist Church, 120 W. Main St., New Holland. Up to 40 cars line up at the church on the third Thursday of each month beginning at 5:15 p.m. According to church pastor Ray Voran, many of the meal recipients come regularly to the drivethrough. “At least 75% are people that we recognize,” said Voran. “It’s not unusual for people to drive up and talk to us about prayer requests, so we get to know what they’re facing,” he said of the relationships that have developed. Prior to the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, the meal was held inside the church as a sit-down event, but for more than a year now, the food has been served takeout style. Voran noted that the size of the fellowship hall has prevented a move back to sit-down meals. He said that during nice weather the church may put tables outside for

tree? Probably not, but is it wise to bring a pet into the home during the holidays only to fully grasp the reality of pet ownership when life returns to normal in January? Alexis Vollmer, an animal care technician, with the Humane League of Lancaster County, said that the last couple of years the organization has been lucky following Christmas. “We had quite a few less returns compared to how many were adopted out,” noted Vollmer, who credits the matchmaking skills of league members and staff with that low number. those who wish to eat on the premises. For November, Voran and a crew of eight volunteers prepared a Thanksgiving-type meal to hand out. Individual meals of turkey and stuffing casserole, potatoes, and mixed vegetables were dished into containers, and each was accompanied by a side of fruit and bagged cookies. The turkeys were cooked ahead of time, but the meal was assembled in the church kitchen. Voran said he often starts cooking the hot meal in the morning. Volunteers arrive between 3 and 4 p.m. to start packing, and the meals are handed out at 5:15 p.m. According to Voran, about 100 meals are handed out monthly. “With takeout we can serve more (than we did with an indoor meal),” he said, adding that with the number of volunteers available, the takeout system works well. “There are a lot of (meal recipients) who appreciate the takeout,” he said. and whether or not we think they will do OK with each other,” she stated, adding that the child’s energy level will be considered. She noted that younger animals are often better with children. When a new animal comes home, it should be given its own space to decompress and dogs should be taken out often. “They need to get adjusted,” she said, adding that cats especially can be overwhelmed easily. Lastly, Vollmer commented on the element of surprise in getting a new animal. “Sometimes people aren’t expecting a commitment for a present,” she said. “We tell people to make the surprise coming to the shelter to pick out the animal. It’s still a great experience, but it circumvents some potential issues.” More information about the Humane League may be found at https://humanepa.org/ partners/humane-league-of -lancaster-county or by searching for “the Humane League of Lancaster County” on Facebook.

(back) because people didn’t have the time anymore.” Several factors are involved in helping to select an animal that fits with the family’s dynamic. “We work with the information we get on the applications and what we know about the animal,” said Vollmer of the matchmaking process. She noted that when there are already pets in the home, it is important to introduce them slowly and have plans in place in case they do not warm up to each other right away. In the case of a dog, a family may bring the pet to meet the potential adoptee. She noted that a kitten may be a better choice than an adult cat if the home already has a dog in it. Whether small children live in the home or visit often is also a determining factor. Vollmer noted that the league recommends bringing children or grandchildren to meet the dog or cat at the shelter. “We want to see how they are here and give adopters feedback on behavior we’re seeing

Vollmer pointed out that there are two important commitments that potential adopters should examine when considering a new pet. “I would say people who are prepared for the time and financial commitments (are more successful pet owners),” said Vollmer. She noted that while animals are spayed, neutered, and microchipped by the league, there will still be expenses related to yearly examinations and vaccinations, and she added that older pets may need special food, medicine, and joint supplements. Time commitments may vary with the animal, but Vollmer warns that this time of year may give a false sense of reality. “Around the holidays, people are off and have free time, but once they go back to work (they will have less free time),” she noted, adding that it is essential to consider the demands of a new puppy or kitten. “Consistency (in a schedule) helps keep the animals from getting stressed out,” she stated. “We have gotten a lot of animals

We are Closing Early at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve 12/24 and Closed on Christmas Day 12/25. Have a wonderful holiday!

“We have taken what was basically a Christmas cantata with four themes of Advent love, joy, hope, and peace and broken it into segments,” explained Tully. The addition of the tagline “A Weary World Rejoices” enhances the meaning of the presentation in a world two years into the effects of a pandemic. Gardiner noted that Raney’s works are familiar to the congregation since the composer visited the church a few years ago. “ We got to know him, and we do a lot of his music,” said Gardiner. “He has done some interesting things musically that give (his compositions) a whole fresh approach.” Light refreshments will be served following the service. In the case of inclement weather, readers are asked to visit www.salemhellers.com.

North Star Initiative raised a grand total of $159,012 through its Tapas Shindig event on Oct. 22. Proceeds will benefit the survivors of human trafficking at The Harbor. For more details, visit www.northstarinitiative.org.

Bruce Tully, pastor of Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers, and Ron Gardiner, music director at the church, have been considering the hurts of a “weary world” for a while. “We talked about this five years ago,” recalled Gardiner. “But it evolved when I found this piece of music.” The anthem Gardiner shared with Tully was called “When Memory Fades,” and the piece became the impetus for “A Thrill of Hope,” a program of seasonal songs and God’s Word to comfort those affected by loss, to be held at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 19. Tully noted that all are welcome to the service, but that the mix of music by composer Joel Raney with

Scripture readings and a message of hope and encouragement is especially designed for those who have experienced losses. “This goes beyond (physical loss) to encompass the loss of (a loved one) due to memory loss or anything that would take the person you know away,” said Tully, who stated there is a special type of mourning associated with this loss that affects people strongly at Christmas. He added that medical professionals may benefit from the service as well. Highlights of the event will include soloist Carolyn McClain singing “You Do Not Walk Alone,” and a unique opportunity to place an ornament honoring a loved one on a live tree, which will later be planted on the church grounds.

World War I Exhibit Opens The North Museum, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, opened its doors to a new traveling exhibit on Nov. 11. The “WW1 America” exhibit invites audiences to gain a nuanced understanding of World War I as a transformational event in American history; a compressed and convulsive time of social, economic, and political change; and a lens through which to understand what it means to be modern. “WW1 America” explores stories of a transformational and divisive era for a broad, multi-generational audience. The exhibition is visually dynamic, with large-scale photographs, moving images,

multimedia environments, and re-created settings such as a music shop and grocery store. It is also a socially interactive forum, with stories and many period artifacts supported by authentic voices expressing competing views. From the realities of war to the delights of popular culture, “WW1 America” offers visitors a view of the many dimensions of this period, as well as an entry point into thinking about and making sense of the current time. For details and tickets, visit www.northmuseum.org/ww1 exhibit. The North Museum offers a daily 20% discount on tickets for veterans and active military members.

RTCM from pg 1 more fun this time,” said Santiago. “If the mom and dad want to come as a couple, that’s fine, but it’s (also) fine if they want to bring the kids.” The RTCM annual Valentine Sweetheart Banquet will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at Faith Mennonite High School, 5085 Woodland Drive, Kinzers. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for special music by guest musicians Dan and Amanda Esh. A fellowship meal catered by Shady Maple will be held at 6:30 p.m. The event will feature door prizes and the comedy of Ryan and Friends. A freewill offering will be accepted at the banquet. Santiago said the Eshes are well-known as a couple in the community. “They sing Chris-

tian music and (specifically) music for couples,” said Santiago of Dan and Amanda, who grew up in singing families and together love to share their music. Ryan Baumgardner of Ryan and Fri$ends has been performing for more than 15 years. Santiago first met Baumgardner when both were involved with Gospel Express giving presentations in South Carolina prisons. At the time, Santiago worked with Teen Challenge. “I took the students down to participate, and Ryan was one of the presenters doing his ventriloquism in the prisons,” explained Santiago, who said he had been considering Baumgardner, who has performed locally and on television, for the Valentine Sweet-

heart Banquet for a few years. “It finally worked out to be a good fit,” said Santiago, who noted that as a traveling performer with a wife and family, Baumgardner understands the journey of marriage and how being away can affect that institution. RTCM is an organization that strives to help men who have turned to abusing chemicals or have developed other kinds of addictions. Santiago said he is grateful that the Lord has sustained the ministry. The student housing facility, located in East Lampeter Township near Strasburg, can house up to 12 men. Santiago said that most graduates move on to other county organizations that offer a phase two program. Currently, the organization is working toward funding two efforts. The first is to raise $25,000 to provide scholarships for two students. The effort had brought in about $6,000 as of early December. The second has a goal of $8,000 to

replace the bunk beds at the house with metal frame beds and new mattresses and bedding. As of early December, about $3,500 had been raised toward that goal. Seating at the banquet will be limited. Table sponsorships are available, and discounts will be offered for table registration and tickets purchased by Tuesday, Jan. 18.
