Additionally, the Hershey Lions Club recently launched its annual Sight and Service Campaign. This initiative raises funds to help Derry Township residents, and all funds received through the effort go back to the public in the form of service projects and donations. Since its beginning, the club has collected almost $100,000 through the campaign. Money raised through the campaign allows the Lions to benefit the community, not just through financial support, but also through acts of hands-on service. Some projects in the community include eye exams and glasses for residents in need, local student scholarships, sponsorship of youth sports teams, medical equipment assistance, support of the Hershey Food Bank, providing meals at the Ronald McDonald House, disaster

It took 10 rounds to winnow the field from 26 spellers to three in the annual Lower Dauphin Middle School Spelling Bee on Dec. 3, 2021. The remaining spellers, eighth-grader Riley Beers and sixth-graders Ben Barreca and Oine Bello, went head-to-head for an additional four rounds until only Ben and Riley faced off for two more rounds. Riley was ultimately crowned champion by correctly spelling the word “lyrically.” The final eight rounds of the bee were completed with words the students had not studied previously, as the pronouncers had run out of words on the official bee list after the ninth round. The competing students were the top three spellers in each sixth-grade academic team as well as top spellers in seventh- and eighth-grade English classes.

AACA Museum To Memorialize Betty White The AACA Museum Inc. will memorialize Betty White, who died on Dec. 31, 2021, at the age of 99, on Sunday, Jan. 16, with “Betty White Day at the Museum.” The event planned originally as a birthday celebration will now honor the actress’s life and special connection to the AACA Museum Inc. Her “Parakeet,” a 1977 Cadillac Seville, is part of the museum’s collection. The car was a gift to Betty from her husband, Allen Ludden. The story of the Parakeet can be found at www.aacamuseum.org/ articles/betty-white-and -a-parakeet/.

On Jan. 16, the first 300 museum visitors will receive free admission courtesy of the car’s donor, Nick Farrintino of Texas, and the Potomac Region of the Cadillac & LaSalle Club, the car’s adoptive organization. At 11 a.m., a reception will be held; refreshments will be available, and guests may get an up-close look at the Parakeet. White had a deep concern for animal welfare and was passionate about providing resources for animals’ care. Community members are invited to honor White by donating to the animal shelter of their choice.

Conservancy Purchases Property

Conewago Creek

The Lancaster Conservancy has acquired a 155-acre tract of stream, forests, and farmland that surrounds the Conewago Recreation Trail in Mount Joy Township. The property is within the federally designated Highlands Region, which encompasses the forested ridge that run from Maryland north to Connecticut between the Appalachian Mountain Range and the urban centers of the Mid-Atlantic to the east. The designation seeks to encourage conservation within the region to protect drinking water supplies, natural habitat, and recreation opportunities - all factors which are present and now protected on this 155-acre property.

This tract preserves views of upland forests and farmlands from the Conewago Recreation Trail, which begins near Elizabethtown at Route 230 and travels to the Lebanon County line. The property first came on the market 10 years ago, but more recently the owners acquired additional properties to facilitate commercial access and marketed the property for commercial development as a future warehouse site. Development of this land would have impacted several acres of wetlands and over a mile of the Conewago Creek, which flows through the property and ultimately drains into the Susquehanna River. Development would also have

made it challenging to proceed with a proposed stream restoration project that Londonderry and Mount Joy townships have been jointly working on for several years. The County of Lancaster awarded a $150,000 grant to help fund the Conservancy’s acquisition of this property. The total cost of the property’s acquisition and permanent stewardship is $2.4 million. The Conservancy raises both private and public funds for these properties and is currently undertaking a fundraising campaign to pay off a loan from Fulton Bank that helped initially acquire the property. This tract is just downstream from the Conservancy’s Donegal Highlands and

Bellaire Woods nature preserves and will become the Conservancy’s 50th nature preserve. The Lancaster Conservancy is an accredited land trust, founded in 1969, and manages over 8,200 acres for the public to hike and enjoy 365 days per year. The Conservancy’s efforts in the Highlands region, which runs through the northern stretch of the county, includes over 2,300 acres of land protected through easements or owned by the Conservancy as well as several hundred acres protected through the Conservancy’s joint projects with other land trusts and state agencies. To donate or learn more about the Conservancy, visit www.lancasterconservancy.org.

“The Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes” in New York City’s Radio City Music Hall is a well-known show celebrating the holiday season. On Nov. 20, the first performers on stage during the 5 p.m. show were 16 students from the a cappella vocal group Beyond Unison from Bucknell University, Lewisburg. Caiden Covell of Hummelstown, bass, is a member of the group that performed. Covell is a member of

the Class of 2025. The Bucknell group was chosen to perform in the show’s “Sounds of Christmas” segment, which gives a chorus the opportunity to present an a cappella performance before the curtain opens on “The Christmas Spectacular.” Beyond Unison’s student leaders made all of the arrangements, applying last summer and providing the required performance video in order to be accepted.

Student-Athlete Honored For Good Deed A current ninth-grader at Lower Dauphin High School was recognized by Lower Dauphin Communities That Care and Hummelstown Police for a good deed. Christian Grow was honored for his actions as an eighth-grader on the Lower Dauphin Middle School track and field team. During a team meet, he was in the lead and was about to lap a slower stu-

dent who appeared to be struggling to finish the race. As he passed her, he offered words of encouragement and demonstrated tremendous sportsmanship. For his efforts, he was rewarded with a gift card to Target; a Do The Right Thing Tshirt, pencil and certificate; and a Subway coupon. The October program sponsor was Commonwealth Financial Associ-

ates. Alecia Cobb, a sixth-grader at the middle school was also recognized in October. The Do the Right Thing program recognizes students in the Lower Dauphin community who have distinguished themselves through their accomplishments, attitude or outstanding efforts. For more information, contact Angela Durantine at adurantine@ldsd.org.

DMVA Shares Ways To Help Veterans The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) asks Pennsylvanians to consider donating to programs that support the commonwealth’s nearly 800,000 veterans, active military members, and their families. Monetary donations to these nonprofit, tax-deductible programs can be made by individuals, corporations and companies. The DMVA administers four tax-deductible programs that honor veterans and provide them with aid. These programs rely on donations from the public. The four programs are the Military Family Relief Assistance Program (MFRAP), Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF), Residents’ Welfare Funds, and Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial Trust Fund. The MFRAP provides financial assistance, in the form of grants, to eligible Pennsylvania service members and their eligible family members who have an immediate financial need due to circumstances beyond their control. This program is made possible by donations from taxpayers who designate all or part of their Pennsylvania personal

income tax refund to support Pennsylvania military personnel and their families and by those who donate online or privately by mail. The VTF issues grants to statewide charitable organizations that assist veterans, veterans service organizations, and county directors of veterans affairs to help veterans in need of shelter and necessities of living. The VTF also issues temporary assistance grants to individual veterans who have qualifying financial needs. The grants are funded by Pennsylvanians who voluntarily make a donation when applying for or renewing their driver’s license or photo identification card and renewing a motor vehicle registration, from proceeds generated by the sale of the Honoring Our Veterans and Honoring Our Women Veterans license plates, and through private donations by mail. Residents’ Welfare Funds at each of the DMVA’s six veterans’ homes help to keep the residents active and healthy by providing activities and entertainment. Donations are made online or through private donations by

mail. The six Pennsylvania veterans’ homes are Delaware Valley Veterans’ Home in Philadelphia, Gino J. Merli Veterans’ Center in Scranton, Hollidaysburg Veterans’ Home, Pennsylvania Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Home in Erie, Southeastern Veterans’ Center in Spring City, and Southwestern Veterans’ Center in Pittsburgh. Located at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Lebanon County and maintained by the DMVA, the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial honors veterans of all eras from the Revolutionary War forward. Donations are accepted online or by mail to help fund the maintenance and repair of the memorial. When an online donation is made, donors may choose to enter honoree information. A plaque for the honoree will be displayed on the Virtual Donor Wall. Online plaques will show that donations have been made in honor of, in memory of, or on behalf of someone. To make a donation online or by mail for any of these taxdeductible programs or to learn more about each one, visit www.donate.dmva.pa.gov.

The all about Christian Grow (second from left) is congratulated for his efforts by Hummelstown Police student resource officer Josh Martin (far left), Lower Dauphin Communities That Care program director Angela Durantine (second from right), and Rick Blair with Commonwealth Financial Associates.

Home Care Grants Now Available The Pennsylvania Foundation for Home Care and Hospice announced the launch of its Home Care Grant program. The program was developed to support homebased care agencies in providing temporary care to individuals who demonstrate a need for home- and community-based services but are not yet receiving or eligible for services through other payment programs, such as Medicaid. It will provide up to $1,200 per consumer which can be used as 50 hours of non-medical home care services or 12

skilled home health visits. Pennsylvania Homecare Association members can apply for the grant, which will focus on and fund clients with the highest level of need. This program allows agencies to provide immediate assistance until Medicaid or other assistance is available. The board of directors of the Pennsylvania Homecare Association has seeded the Home Care Grant program with an initial donation of $100,000. The Pennsylvania Foundation for Home Care and Hospice will continue to

seek funding to support and expand the program. More information on grant eligibility and application forms can be found at w w w. p a h o m e c a r e . o r g / foundation. The Pennsylvania Foundation for Home Care and Hospice is a nonprofit organization created to promote and support home health, home care, and hospice in Pennsylvania through community awareness, enhancement of career paths for the home health care workforce, and financial assistance for customers of home care.

The walls of the adolescent inpatient psychiatry unit at Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute (PPI) were pale and gray, according to Dr. Elisabeth J. Kunkel, PPI’s chief medical officer. To remedy that situation, PPI reached out to the art community to enhance the space by providing a more therapeutic environment. Through a partnership with Lower Dauphin School District, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and two professional artists, they were able to liven up the unit with artwork. The two professional artists, Linda Billet (glass mosaic) and Beth Krumholz (mixed media),

worked with Lower Dauphin students in kindergarten through grade 12 as well as community members to create 13 pieces for the adolescent inpatient psychiatry unit during the 2018-19 school year. The artwork was formally dedicated in 2019. However, to assure safety on a behavioral health unit, the project team faced several installation challenges. The frames were mounted to the walls using a technique that makes them very difficult to remove using human strength, and the artwork is also covered by acrylic glass. Final installation was completed in 2021.

These grants are intended to help maximize opportunities for economic growth and ingenuity in local and regional food systems to kickstart a transformation. The Penn State Extension team will provide educational programming, direct technical assistance, and peer-topeer networking and learning opportunities for farmers markets and retail farm market owners and staff through both new and signature programs, including Under the Ground, Retail Farm Market School, and the annual Farmers Market Managers Conference.
