Telepsychiatry Services Available In Hershey Telepsychiatry services are now available at the Institute for Learning & Behavioral Sciences located in Hershey. Telepsychiatry is the delivery of psychiatry through realtime videoconferencing. The Institute for Learning & Behavioral Sciences, which provides comprehensive psychoeducational, learning, cognitive, and psychological evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults, and InSight Telepsychiatry have announced a new partnership to increase psychiatric coverage for individuals seeking mental health care in an outpatient setting. Clint Stankiewicz, owner and executive director of the Institute for Learning & Behavioral
Sciences, saw a need in the community for more access to psychiatric care. In addition to increasing access to care in the community, this program will offer psychiatric services to individuals who already receive mental health services at the Institute for Learning & Behavioral Sciences, if needed. This allows them to continue treatment at their current location as opposed to being referred to a different organization. Telepsychiatry services at The Institute for Learning & Behavioral Sciences are now available. To learn more about telepsychiatry, readers may visit www.InSightTelepsychiatry.com.

MOMS Club of Elizabethtown will host its 10th annual Preschool Fair on Saturday, Jan. 25, from 9 to 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. Admission is free and parents, caregivers, and children are welcome to attend. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 1. Preschool Fair coordinator Erica Leilous said that the event is designed to highlight educational offerings of local preschools, as well as activities geared toward preschoolage children and their parents and caregivers, in order to help parents to make an informed choice for educating their young children. “Preschools typically begin sign-ups before spring of the same year for fall enrollment, so exploring at the start of the year is key,” stated Leilous. She noted that while many schools start when a child is age 3 or 4, some, such as Elizabethtown Community Nursery School, have programs for children as young as age 2, and infants and older children may attend Children’s Playroom of Lancaster County with their parent. “It is a great opportunity to explore all the schools at one time, in one location, versus researching all the options on your own,” said Leilous. “It is great to have the face-to-face interaction

Hi, everyone! How are you liking the up and down temperatures we are having this first month of 2020? I don’t want to complain; I remember many Januarys that were a lot worse than this one! Usually I get the winter doldrums right after the holidays, but so far so good ... but that’s probably because I didn’t take down my Christmas decorations yet! I’m psyching my mind out to believe it is still the holidays! Beautiful Wisdom One day, a man walking down a path saw a butterfly cocoon that was about to open. As he watched, a small opening appeared in the cocoon; the man sat and watched for the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no further. So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and opened the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a withered body, it was tiny, and its wings were shriveled. Then man continued to watch because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would open, enlarge, and expand, to be able to support the butterfly’s body. Neither happened. In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a withered body and shriveled wings. It never was able to take flight. What the man, in his kindness and his goodwill, did not understand, was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening, were nature’s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings, so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon. Sometimes, struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we were allowed to go through life without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as we could have been. Never able to fly. I asked for Strength ... and I was given difficulties to make me strong. I asked for Wisdom … and I was given problems to solve. I asked for Prosperity … and I was given a brain and brawn to work. I asked for Courage … and I was given obstacles to overcome. I asked for Love … and I was given troubled people to help. I asked for Favors … and I was given Opportunities. I received nothing I wanted … but I received EVERYTHING I needed.

Joke of the Week A second-grader came home from school and said to her mother, “Mom, guess what? We learned how to make babies today.” The mother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her cool. “That’s interesting,” she said. “How do you make babies?” “It’s simple,” replied the girl. “You just change ‘y’ to ‘i’ and add ‘es.’” Thank You Thanks to my main column man Francis Kasper of Middletown for the piece about the butterfly! The field of senior care offers employment opportunities for people with a variety of skills and talents. The senior care industry includes many different positions that are vital to ensuring that senior living communities provide the best possible care for residents as they age. Representatives from the industry note that working in the field of senior care can be a rewarding career choice for individuals with a passion for helping the senior population. “One of the many perks (of working in senior care) is having the opportunity to be part of something bigger and having the opportunity each and every day to affect people’s lives in a positive way,” explained Kim Focht, director of human resources at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community (QPRC), 625 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. “Our residents are our primary focus,” noted Kelly Miller, director

of sales and marketing at Heatherwood Senior Living Community, 3180 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. “This is their home, and they should be made to feel important and well cared for. Patience and understanding are key. Caring about how well our residents are treated is our main focus.” For Alicia Erdman, sales director for Legend Senior Living of Lititz, 80 W. Millport Road, something she enjoys about working in the senior care industry is the “satisfaction of knowing you were able to help a family and they no longer have to worry about their loved one’s overall safety.” Nurses are in high demand to fill various roles within senior care. Retirement communities offer positions for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), and Registered Nursing Assessment Coordinators. A license is required to work as an RN or LPN. A certification is needed to serve as a CNA, but some senior care employers will help staff members obtain the certification. “We (at QPRC) do provide this education as well as pay our staff to get the education,” noted Focht. Personal care aides and medication technicians are also needed. A certification is required to serve as a med tech, with some employers providing and paying for the necessary training to staff members. “If you are serious, after 90 days (at Heatherwood), we will train and pay for the med tech
certification, with the promise of a one-year employee commitment,” noted Miller. Other positions offered in the field of senior care include several roles within dining services for servers, cooks, dishwashers, prep cooks, dietary aides, and managers. Also needed are housekeepers, laundry aides and assistants, maintenance and renovations team members, activities aides, and receptionists. The field of senior care also includes home care professionals, who serve as caregivers, companions, and transportation providers to help seniors continue to live independently in their homes. Full-time, part-time, temporary, and PRN (as needed) employment opportunities are offered in the field of senior care. As facilities care for residents around the clock, employees are needed for all shifts. Nursing jobs offer a variety of options and flexibility, allowing for people craft a work schedule that fits with their current season of life and family obligations. No matter which position they are interested in, one key attribute for senior care jobseekers to exhibit is dependability. “We’re looking for someone who is reliable and shares a passion for seniors,” explained Erdman. Other representatives from the senior care industry noted that displaying some longevity on a resume, without a lot of job AGAPE CARE IS HIRING PT PCAs & Caregivers. hopping, is also a plus for those looking to get hired. Focht added that employers also look for individuals who have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Experience in the industry is preferred, but not required. “Bring a positive, team-like attitude, and we will train you,” noted Miller. “These careers require a desire to make a difference in people’s lives. They are both physically and emotionally demanding, and - at the same time - endlessly rewarding,” said Focht.

Traditions of Hershey recently received two awards. Traditions of Hershey was selected as a Caring Star of 2020 for service excellence in senior living. In consumer ratings and reviews on Caring.com, Traditions of Hershey earned a 5-star rating (the highest possible score) within the qualification time frame, while also having a high volume of positive reviews and meeting other criteria for this national honor. Out of 149 Caring Stars communities across the country, Traditions of Hershey is the only recipient in Lebanon County. Originally published in January 2012, the Caring Stars annual list is designed to be a guide of the best senior living communities nationwide. To be considered for the award, Caring Stars communities met a set of criteria based on ratings and reviews from senior living residents and their family members. Caring.com senior care experts also conducted a reviews-integrity audit and took other quality-assurance measures before determining the Caring Stars of 2020. To read the full text of reviews, readers may visit https://bit.ly/35Zhmnj. To learn more about the Caring Stars program and view the complete winner list, readers may visit www.caring.com/care givers/bestseniorliving. Traditions of Hershey was also selected
as one of 2020 Best of Senior Living Award winners on SeniorAdvisor.com, a ratings and reviews site for senior care and services in North America and Canada. SeniorAdvisor.com is in its seventh year of hosting the Best of Senior Living Awards. Winners are selected based on the online reviews written by seniors and their families. This designation honors the top 2 to 3% of senior care providers across the United States and Canada. The annual SeniorAdvisor.com Best of Senior Living Awards tabulates over 240,000 family-created reviews. Of the nearly 45,000 communities currently listed on SeniorAdvisor.com, just over 610 were recognized with this award. Traditions of Hershey is the only winner from Lebanon County. To qualify for inclusion in the Best of 2020 Awards, care providers must have maintained an average overall rating of at least 4.5 stars, while receiving five or more reviews between Nov. 17, 2018, and Oct. 18, 2019. Additional details and a complete list of award winners can be found on SeniorAdvisor.com. More information on Traditions of Hershey, which is located at 100 N. Larkspur Drive, Palmyra, is available by calling Marisa Williams, marketing director, at 717-838-2330 or visiting www.traditionsofhershey.com.
