Food Bank Offers Free Dog, Cat Food BY FRANCINE FULTON

Pet owners in need of food for their dogs and cats are invited to visit the pet food bank that is offered by the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area (HSHA), 7790 Grayson Road, Harrisburg. The free pet food is available to those who are struggling to feed their pets because of financial hardships, with the goal of keeping more pets in their home and out of shelters.

Because of the pandemic, the pet food bank has changed the way it operates. Last April, online sign-up became available, allowing people to register and choose a time to safely pick up the food in a drive-through format. “Before COVID-19, people would call in and say they need help and tell us how many pets they had and come in to get their food,” explained Amanda Brunish, HSHA director of marketing and outreach. “(People) can now sign up for a time slot, say how many pets they have and the type of pets, and we will have the food ready for them in a pickup location outside the building. Our goal is to help as many people as possible as safely as possible.” See Pet Food Bank pg 9

The LDHS community was invited to support their efforts by donating money for each lap they completed. “(Layser) ran on the track at the high school and I ran from my apartment,” Payonk explained. “Basically, he ran a mile around the track, and I ran a loop that I set up around my apartment. I ran into Hummelstown and looped back to my place.”

Attention Back Pain and Sciatica Sufferers! Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Before coming to Madden, I was having pain in my hip and leg from Sciatica, which impacted my daily activities, such as sitting, standing and walking. I was not sleeping well, and could not get comfortable. Now my pain has decreased and I’m now able to move freely and confidently, and my pain level has dropped and I can now sleep well.” -Denise G. Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life… I’ve seen it many times. 4 It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… 4 It can take your focus away on enjoying your life… like spending time with your children or grandchildren… 4 It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… 4 It can ruin your travel plans… 4 And it can take away your ability to live life… having to rely on others… or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting… not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems… and life problems. Here at Madden Physical Therapy the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 1000’s of people who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica… it’s our specialty.

So by request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Madden Physical Therapy in Lower Paxton on Wednesday, February 17th at 7:00 PM.

Local Boy Scout Earns All 137 Merit Badges BY FRANCINE FULTON

On Dec. 28, 2020, Alex LaVerdiere, a member of Boy Scout Troop 262 in Grantville, completed the requirements to earn the Horsemanship merit badge. With its completion, Alex marked a milestone - earning all of the 137 merit badges offered by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Reportedly, fewer than 500 Scouts have earned every merit badge available since the BSA formed in 1910, out of approximately 2.5 million Scouts in the program. In the BSA program, merit badges are a way for Scouts to learn about life skills, such as first aid, camping and swimming; hobbies, including wood carving, photography and fishing; and vocational opportunities like dentistry, forestry and American business. Scouts can earn merit badges from age 11 until their 18th birthday. “It was always my goal (to earn the badges),” Alex said. “I set the goal when I was about 9.” Alex also earned the Eagle Scout Rank, the highest rank in Boy Scouting. Eagle Scouts are required to earn 21 merit badges, 13 of which are specified by the program. Alex said that his favorite merit badges to earn involved scuba diving, whitewater raft-

ing and snow sports. His most difficult was Bugling. “I had to learn (to play the bugle) from scratch; I took six months of lessons,” he said. “I had to learn 10 songs and make up one of my own. It is the leastearned merit badge.” Alex earned merit badges at BSA summer camps, during activities with his troop and on his own time, as well as at local “merit badge college” events. For example, he earned his Dentistry merit badge at merit badge college after speaking with a local dentist who was there as a merit badge counselor. Alex displays his badges on his merit badge sash, which weighs about five pounds. “I really want to thank my family, the leaders and the counselors that have helped me achieve this goal,” he stated. In addition to his troop activities, Alex has served as the vice chief of program for the Sasquesahanough Lodge of the Order of the Arrow, which is the BSA national honor society. He has also mentored local Cub Scouts in Pack 362 as a den chief and has served as a BSA summer camp counselor. Now that he is 18, he plans to continue his Scouting career as an adult leader. “(Scouting) helps you in every aspect of your life,” he shared.

Boy Scout Alex LaVerdiere recently completed all of the 137 merit badges offered by the Boy Scouts of America.

Alex, who graduated a year early in June 2020 from Commonwealth Charter Academy, plans to attend St. Joseph’s College of Maine to study science and business administration. “Someday I would like to start my own company,” he stated. “I am excited for the new chapter in my life.” Troop 262, which is sponsored by St. John’s United Methodist Church in Grantville, is part of the Keystone Capital District of the New Birth of Freedom Council. Performances To Celebrate Black History Month In celebration of Black History Month, Dauphin County Commissioners Jeff Haste, Mike Pries, and George R. Hartwick III will present an original digital performance episode by Sharia Benn and partnership program of Sankofa African American Theatre Company and Gamut Theatre Group. The program is titled “Do You Know Me?” Gamut and Sankofa, in partnership with Dauphin County, produce a new play each spring and typically present it live, in-person at Gamut Theatre with multiple student matinee performances. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sankofa and Gamut converted the

event to a virtual program that can be used by teachers in online classrooms. Sponsored by Highmark Blue Shield and co-directed by Benn and Melissa Nicholson, “Do You Know Me?” connects audiences to Harrisburg’s rich history of abolitionists and civil rights activists who worked to end slavery, secure the vote, and challenge segregation. Local students and professional artists share poetry, letters, and more by influential local and national African American leaders. Benn and Nicholson have been working with Dauphin County students Jade Jarrell of Capital Area School of the Arts, Lunden McClain of Central Dauphin

East High School, and Najuma Norman of Capital Area School of the Arts, who perform live monologues filmed on the Gamut stage. This performance is free to all Dauphin County high schools in February and March, accompanied by live talk-back discussions on Zoom. To register a school for this event, readers may contact Gamut Theatre at 717-238-4111. This digital performance episode will also be offered to the public for two special viewings on Sunday, March 14, at 4 p.m. and Monday, March 29, at 7 p.m. Tickets for the public performances may be purchased at www.gamuttheatre.org.

Pet Food Bank from pg 1 To register for a time to come to the pantry, readers may visit www.humane societyhbg.org and choose Get Assistance and then HSHA Pet Food Bank Drive (Thru). Those who do not have access to a computer may call 717-564-3320 and choose option 105 for the food bank coordinator to register. When people arrive, they will be given dry pet food for their cats or dogs. “If (the pets) have a grain issue, we can accommodate grain-free food if possible,” Brunish said. “We try to give treats as well if those are available. We want to set the pet owner up for success and make sure the pet will have a full belly for a while.” Because of the pandemic and increasing demands,

the pet food bank received funding from the Pennsylvania Animal Response Team (PART). According to Kristi Kleinfelter, HSHA food bank coordinator, the food bank would typically get one or two pickups per day in 2019. Since COVID-19, it is normal for the food bank to have six to seven pickups a day. Brunish reported that from April to December 2020, HSHA donated more than 14,500 pounds of pet food to those in need in central Pennsylvania. This helped to feed more than 275 pets. She noted that pet adoptions went up significantly during the stay-at-home order last spring. Food bank donations are welcome. Individuals and families may donate, as well as church groups or clubs such as Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts.

“We have a donation bin to the left of the adoption center, and donations can be dropped off anytime,” noted Brunish. “We suggest that people visit our website there is a section called Get Involved. Under that, we have a wish list, which is our mostneeded items. For anyone interested in doing a food drive, this is a good place to start.” At this time, only cat and dog food is available from the pantry. Those who have a different type of pet and are in need of assistance, as well as those who are unable to travel to HSHA, should email frontdesk@humanesocietyhbg.org. For more information about the HSHA and the food bank, readers may visit www.humanesocietyhbg.org or www.facebook.com/Humane HBG or call 717-564-3320.

Mandolin Ensemble To Present Program The Susquehanna Folk Music Society in partnership with the York County Libraries will present an online program with the Harrisburg Mandolin Ensemble on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m. The program will explore the history of community-based mandolin orchestras and a time in U.S. history when many cities and towns had ensembles of this kind. This 60-minute online

program is free and open to people of all ages. The ensemble members are Greg Rohrer on mandolin; Kevin Neidig on mandolin, octave mandolin, and vocals; Tom Cook on mandola, mandolin, and vocals; and Henry Koretzky on mandocello, mandolin, and vocals. They play jazz, swing, bluegrass, folk, pop, and more. Those who plan to attend are asked to register at www.susquehannafolk.org.

More information is available by visiting the aforementioned website or calling 717-745-6577. This Susquehanna Folk Music Society and York County Libraries program is funded through a Better York Welcoming Communities Grant. Additional funding is provided by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, administered locally by the Cultural Alliance of York County.

Some are romantic or sweet, but most are just funny. (Tip to you guys out there: Pick-up lines don’t usually work.)

to your heart? I’ve seemed to have lost myself in your eyes. Do you believe in love at first sight ... or should I walk by you again? Is there an airport nearby or is that just my heart taking off? If I had a rose for every time I thought of you, I would be walking through my garden forever. If beauty were time, you’d be eternity. You look like a girl who has heard every pick-up line in the book, so what’s one more going to hurt? Baby, you’re so sweet, you could put Hershey’s out of business. If I could rearrange the alphabet, I’d put U and I together. Excuse me is your last name Gillette? ... Because you are the best a man can get!
