The Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) will present Altan in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, at The Abbey Bar, Appalachian Brewing Company, 50 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. The group has played its traditional Irish music around the world. Altan’s recordings range from old Irish songs to reels and jigs. The band seeks to bring traditional music to contemporary audiences. The band was founded by Mairéad Ní Mhaonigh, known as one of the leading experts of Donegal fiddle music, and her late husband, Frankie Kennedy. Bouzouki player Ciarán Curran is a native of Kinawley, an area rich in music, song, and folklore. His late uncle, Ned Curran, was a fiddle player and gave the band many tunes from his unique repertoire. Ciarán brings his strong family musical tradition to bear on an instrument that is relatively new to Irish music. Daíthí Sproule was one of the first guitarists to develop DADGAD guitar tuning for Irish music. In addition to performing and recording, he is a teacher and lecturer in subjects ranging from guitar styles and tra-
ditional songs to Irish language and myth. Mark Kelly was born and raised in Dublin, and his mother was a jazz singer. Accordionist, composer, producer, and musicologist Martin Tourish is from County Donegal and now is based in Dublin. Recognition of Altan’s international status and success came in 1996 when it was the first Irish band of its kind to be signed by a major record label. The band gained gold and platinum albums in Ireland and toured larger venues in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and the U.S. Ticket prices have been set for adults and for students ages 3 to 22. SFMS members will receive a discount. Advance tickets are available through www.BrownPaperTickets.com or by calling 800-838-3006. Funding for SFMS concerts is provided by the Cultural Enrichment Fund and by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, administered locally by the Cultural Alliance of York County. For more information, readers may visit www.sfmsfolk.org. Pictured on front: Altan will perform in concert on Thursday, Feb. 20.

H. R. Weaver Building Systems Inc. recently inflated a fabric dome that encloses the artificial turf field next to In the Net Sports Complex. The dome, which will be inflated every December and deflated every March, will help to accomodate soccer, softball and lacrosse programs. H. R. Weaver Building Systems Inc. recently inflated a 75,000-square-foot fabric dome that encloses the artificial turf field next to In the Net Sports Complex. Located at the corner of Airport and Brandt roads in South Londonderry Township stands the 340-foot-long, 222-footwide, 77-foot-high dome made of a vinyl fabric. The foundation work was completed in the weeks prior, and on Jan. 17, 45 employees in approximately 10 hours hooked up the air handler, inflated the dome, hung the 77 interior lights and connected the fabric to air lock doors for the first use of the dome the next morning. According to H.R. Weaver Building Systems Inc. owner/president Chad Weaver,
also owner of In the Net Sports Complex in the Flightpath Sports Park, the company added the dome in order to have the turf field utilized all year round. The dome, which will be inflated every December and deflated every March, will help accommodate the fast growth in programs such as soccer, softball and lacrosse. For more than 47 years, H.R. Weaver Building Systems has been completing construction projects for a wide variety of clients in the central Pennsylvania area. For more information, readers may contact H.R. Eight Lower Dauphin High School vocalists have been selected by audition to perform in the Lebanon Valley College Honors Choir on Friday, Feb. 7, and Saturday, Feb. 8. The honors choir festival provides an opportunity to sing with peers from school districts across central Pennsylvania. Representing Lower Dauphin are Christianna Harchuska and Cadence Kanode, sopranos; Alison Rankin and Audrey Meyers, altos; Richie Johnson and TJ Fausnight, tenors; and Joshua Given and Conor Grubb, basses. The students are being prepared for the festival by Elizabeth Colpo, director of choirs at the high school.
Data about recent demographic trends has been released via the Capital Region Community Dashboard, a web-based resource providing information on health and human service issues in Cumberland, Dauphin, and Perry counties. The site includes the most up-to-date data on nearly 100 key indicators in the areas of health, education, income, basic needs, and demographics. The Capital Region Community Dashboard was created to help local residents, health and human service organizations, education institutions, places of worship, and the business community better understand the issues impacting the region as well as track trends and progress. The project is a partnership between Dauphin County, The Foundation for Enhancing Communities, Harrisburg Housing Authori-
ty, Harrisburg Regional Chamber and CREDC, Partnership for Better Health, Penn State Harrisburg, Penn State Health, UPMC Pinnacle, and United Way of the Capital Region. Statistics recently released through the dashboard indicate that Cumberland County is the fastest growing county in the state and that in the capital region, the fastest growing population includes individuals age 65 and older. The data also shows that rent in Cumberland and Dauphin counties is higher than the state average. To learn more about demographic trends as well as data on health, education, income, and basic needs indicators, readers may visit www.lifeinthecapitalregion.com. For more information, readers may contact Rae Lynn Cox, United Way of the Capital Region, at 717-732-0700 or rcox@uwcr.org.

Hi, everyone! Oh my goodness, this weather is making me want spring to get here! I know I shouldn’t complain because we have had a very easy winter; let’s just keep our fingers crossed that it stays this way! Hard Times If you are 40 or older, you will think this is hilarious! When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up, what with walking 25 miles to school every morning ... uphill BOTH ways through year-round blizzards ... carrying their younger siblings on their backs ... to their one-room schoolhouse, where they maintained a straight-A average, despite their full-time, afterschool job at the local textile mill ... where they worked for 35 cents an hour just to help keep their family from starving to death! And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way I was going to tell kids about how hard I had it and how easy they’ve got it! But now that I’m over the ripe old age of 40, I can’t help but look around and notice the youths of today. You’ve got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a Utopia! And I hate to say it, but you kids today don’t know how good you’ve got it! I mean, when I was a kid we didn’t have the internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to library and look it up ourselves in the card catalog! There was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter ... with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mail-
box, and it would take like a week to get there! We didn’t have fancy things like call waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called, they got a busy signal; that’s it! And we didn’t have caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, a collections agent - you just didn’t know! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister! We didn’t have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like “Space Invaders” and “Asteroids,” and the graphics were a joke! Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens; it was just one screen forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE! When you went to the movie theater, there was no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy or lady with a hat sat in front of you and you couldn’t see, you were just out of luck! Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15 channels and there was no on-screen menu and no remote control! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were out of luck when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your behind and walk over to the TV to change the channel, and there was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday morning. Do you hear what I’m saying!?! We had to
