Wildheart Ministries

Earns Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Award

It seems fitting that Wildheart Ministries has won the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Community Partner Award, since the goal of the initiative has been to restore and transform Allison Hill, a neighborhood located within Harrisburg, by removing trash and leading community beautification projects, including creating community gardens and playgrounds. According to www.keeppabeautiful.org, the Community Partner Award honors “an outstanding partnership with local government, community organization or business (that enhances and is) essential to local community programming.”

Wildheart Ministries was nominated for the award by Keep Harrisburg - Dauphin Beautiful, a program of See Wildheart Ministries pg 2

Tri County Community Action, which has partnered with Wildheart Ministries for the past six years. Tri County Community Action sponsors the annual Great Harrisburg Litter Cleanup. During last year’s effort, 56,260 pounds of trash and 600 tires were removed from public spaces throughout the city.

“The Great Harrisburg Litter Cleanup is their flagship event. That, in essence, is what we do (all the time), so we have become really good partners with them,” said Tannon Herman, executive director of Wildheart Ministries. “Beautification is our niche. Plus, they are two blocks from us; we are a small, tight community here.”

Wildheart Ministries was founded by Tannon and his wife, Cristina, after the family moved to the Harrisburg neighborhood in 2013 from Oklahoma. At that time, the neighborhood was known for its crime; large, abandoned lots filled with debris; and the illegal dumping of trash.

“We moved to Allison Hill,

an inner-city community, and we formed (Wildheart Ministries) in 2016 after having conversations with our neighbors … about (concerns) in the community, including

blight and trash and other issues,” Tannon said. “I have no background (in this type of ministry). I wanted to be a good neighbor. The way to describe my job is a ‘professional neighbor.’”

The first program of the new ministry in 2017 was to focus on trash cleanup around the couple’s home. “In three weeks, we cleaned up four blocks and removed 120,000 pounds of trash,” said Tannon.

Now, as part of the Love the Hill initiative, the group holds regularly scheduled cleanups, with the next event scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18. “The average number of volunteers is 75 people - residents from inside the commu-

nity, people outside the community, (people from) different companies and churches,” Tannon noted. “It’s like a melting pot every time we have an event.”

Tannon said work will continue to make Allison Hill a cleaner and better place to live. “We have been doing this for six years and removed over 2 million pounds of trash in 90 blocks. There are areas in this neighborhood that our teams have not visited. There is still work to be done,” he said.

Giant’s Feeding School Kids Initiative Returns

For the third year in a row, the Giant Company has announced the launch of its Feeding School Kids initiative and its $250,000 commitment to kick off the program. From now through Tuesday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their grocery purchases to the nearest dollar or convert their CHOICE points into a donation to support public school district food programs.

Giant launched the Feeding School Kids program in 2021 to address the issue of childhood hunger through-

out local public school communities. Together with its customers, Giant has raised more than $4.8 million to date to help ensure no child goes hungry at school or at home.

Through the Feeding School Kids initiative, school districts have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity through activities ranging from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building oncampus food pantries. School districts in Pennsylvania have benefited from the program.

Harrisburg Christian Performing Arts Center (HCPAC), 1000 S. Eisenhower Blvd., Middletown, will offer a new performing arts class and production, “The Iliad, The Odyssey, and All of Greek Mythology in 99 Minutes or Less.” The program is open to students in grades five through 12.

Classes will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 6 p.m. Performances will take place on Friday, May 19, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, May 20, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, May 21, at 2 p.m.

Saving Strategies For Young Adults

When a person is young, saving money may be the furthest thing from his or her mind. After all, this may be a time to enroll in college or trade school; make a first big purchase, such as a car; or even get married. Thinking about establishing a solid financial footing for the future can take a back seat when life is filled with so many significant events.

But it is never too early to start saving - even when saving seems to be an impossible task. Young adults should keep saving in mind and look to various strategies that can set them up for long-term financial security.

An initial strategy should be to set long-term goals. It is easier to save when saving is attached to specific goals. While some may aspire to retire early, establish an emergency fund, or to purchase a home, others may want to save for an overseas vacation. Motivation to save can make it that much easier to do so.

It is important to determine where one spends the most. Saving money on smaller purchases will add up over time, but to really build a robust savings, it is important to figure out one’s biggest expenditures and how that spending be cut back to pad savings. The Logic of Money reports that the average American spends more than 60% of their income on housing and transportation. Figuring out how to cut costs in these categories can be a great way to save.

Young adults are tied to

their digital devices and can find ways to make them work for them. Free cash-back apps give people money back for various purchases. Some can be linked directly to a credit or debit card to have passive income deposited directly. With others, individuals can cash out as a direct deposit or via a payment app like PayPal.

U.S. News & World Report advises that individuals make it a point to put away $1 for every $3 earned into a savings account. That is a good measure for establishing a rainy day fund. If an individuals does not trust themselves to transfer the money, they can have a set amount automatically deposited from their paycheck into a designated savings account.

Consumers should treat credit cards like using cash. The “buy now, pay later” option is an attractive trap to fall into. Using credit cards often is a safer way to pay merchants, because others’ money is being risked rather than one’s own with a debit card. However, using credit can make it challenging to visualize what is actually being spent. Individuals should not purchase more than they can pay off within each billing cycle. Account alerts can be set up on a phone to let individuals know when they have hit their budgeted credit card spending limit. Individuals should also resist the urge to open and use too many cards.

Young adults can begin saving early with some conventional and highly effective strategies.

Veterans Advised To Review Benefits

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) says that the start of the new year is a good time for veterans to meet with an accredited veteran service officer to ensure they are receiving or maximizing the benefits they have earned through their service and sacrifice while in unform. Veterans should not hesitate to apply or double-check to see if new laws and regulations have changed their eligibility, especially with the new PACT Act, which expands VA health care and benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxic substances.

Safeguarding military paperwork, especially the DD-214,

Distractions can be hard to resist. According to Deloitte’s “2022 Connectivity and Mobile Trends Survey” (third edition), the average household in the United States now has a total of 22 connected devices.

The prevalence and accessibility of devices can make it difficult to focus, but tablets, smartphones, and other technologies are not the only culprits that can compromise the ability to concentrate. Harvard Medical School notes that underlying medical conditions, the side effects of medication, and excessive alcohol consumption can each make it harder to focus.

Efforts to improve focus might require a little trial and error until a person finds what works for them. In the meantime, the following are some effective strategies that can help people sharpen their

focus and reap all the rewards that a heightened ability to concentrate has to offer.

Notifications should be turned off. A 2015 study from researchers at Florida State University found that simply hearing the ping of a notification was as distracting as taking a phone call. Individuals may find the idea of answering 20 or more phone calls per day unrealistic, but researchers have found that the average smartphone user receives around 80 push notifications per day. Turning notifications off while in school or during the workday can help people avoid this seemingly endless stream of distractions, thus improving focus.

A distraction-free workspace should be established. A survey from McKinsey & Company found that, after the

acute phases of the COVID19 pandemic, 58% of employed respondents have the option to work from home for all or part of the week. Remote working may be more convenient, but it also can compromise workers’ focus in ways that are unique to working from home. For example, professionals’ children cannot stroll into their offices when they are not working from home, nor are distractions like television within arm’s length in a traditional office setting. Professionals who find it hard to focus when working from home can do more to make their home offices distraction-free. They can make their home a television-free zone during traditional working hours and remove a television or nonwork tablet from their office so they are not tempted to

watch a show or a sporting event when they are supposed to be working.

Adopting a healthier lifestyle is recommended. The experts at Harvard Medical School note that many aspects of a healthy lifestyle can help people focus better. Researchers have discovered a direct link between exercise and a person’s ability to pay attention, noting that exercise increases the availability of brain chemicals that reduce stress and improve sleep, among other things. Less stress and a good night’s rest can make it easier to focus.

An ability to focus pays myriad dividends. Individuals can try various strategies to improve their concentration skills and reap the rewards that such improvement provides.

Slow Cooker Recipes For Game Day

No matter which football teams fans support, they’re likely to get hungry watching the big game. Dips, small bites and other finger foods are staples for viewing parties because they can be eaten easily in front of the big screen. Utilizing slow cookers to prepare these items may create more time for other preparations, and slow cookers can keep meals warm on the buffet table.

Hosts may consider may

Tip: Instead of large Italian rolls, use slider buns or medium kaiser rolls to stretch the sausage mixture further and make it easier to eat while watching the game.

which is used to verify military service, is an important first step for securing benefits. The easiest way to manage military documents is to make sure they are filed in a safe place immediately upon leaving the military. Veterans often find that filing their documents for free at their county courthouse of record is an easy way to secure them until needed, which can often be decades into the future. Anyone needing assistance locating their military documentation may contact the DMVA at 800-5472838 or RA-REQ@pa.gov.

Another key step is for veterans to apply for federal health care and state benefits

by visiting their local county director of veterans affairs or area veteran service officer to look at what benefits they may be eligible for and to get help applying for those benefits. A complete list of accredited county directors of veterans affairs and their contact information is available by visiting www.dmva.pa.gov and clicking on Contact Your County Director. Contact information for accredited veteran service officers is available by visiting the aforementioned website and searching for Veteran Service Officers.

In addition to connecting with a county director or a veteran service officer, the DMVA recommends that every Pennsylvania veteran sign up for the DMVA Veterans Registry. The registry is a free tool that electronically delivers timely information about the many state benefits, programs, and services available to veterans. Veterans, family members, and people who work with veterans can sign up by computer or mobile device at www .register.dmva.pa.gov.

The DMVA noted that veterans should never pay for help applying for their benefits. If a veteran seeking help is asked to pay, they should immediately decline and find one of the more than 200 accredited veteran service officers in Pennsylvania for no-cost assistance. Free assistance is available through the DMVA, county offices, and several veteran service organizations.
