For more information, contact Melissa at m.weigle@mohlercenter.com or the aforementioned phone number. “Echoes of Voices of the Eighth” is a journey that transcends time to connect two African American teens from the same Harrisburg neighborhood. The play is inspired by true stories of history-makers who lived between 1850 and 1920 in the rich and vibrant Old Eighth Ward, which was torn down to make way for the Capitol Complex of today. This story celebrates the contributions of African Americans who lived in the Old Eighth Ward. Health and safety protocols

will be in place. Individuals should consult protocols before purchasing a ticket. For details, visit www.gamut theatre.org/protocol. Admission prices are tiered. Visit www.gamut theatre.org/echoes or call 717-238-4111 for more information and to buy tickets. In addition to the public run of performances, free student matinee performances for Dauphin County schools will be provided. For more information on student matinee performances, contact Gamut Theatre.

Giant’s “Feeding School Kids” Initiative Returns The Giant Company recently announced the return of its “Feeding School Kids” initiative. Now through Monday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their grocery purchases to the nearest dollar or convert their Choice points into a donation for their local public schools’ food programs.

Giant launched the initiative last year to address the issue of childhood hunger throughout local public school districts in the communities it serves. Together with its customers, the company raised more than $3.3 million in 2021. This year, the Giant Company will donate $250,000 to the program. Through the “Feeding School Kids” initia-

For example, the School District of Lancaster scaled up its community garden initiative by implementing addi-

for biodiversity conservation, water quality protection, and climate resilience. Most land trusts operate on a shoestring budget with few staff members, and volunteers fill the gap by performing land protection and stewardship services. To register for the webinar, visit www.manada.org/events.

Brad grew up in a tiny town in western Oklahoma where hunting and fishing was a way of life. However, Brad didn’t give his life to Christ until he was a sophomore in high school. The Lord called Brad into youth ministry and for the last 12 years Brad served in Oklahoma as a youth pastor as a licensed and ordained minister. Brad used his love for the outdoors to minister to students as well as others. Brad founded final Descent Outdoors as an outreach in his church. It grew from that into a national TV show that is in 40 million homes in North America.

Lions Preserve History, Serve Community The Hershey Lions Club recently celebrated its 77th Charter Night and Christmas gathering at the home of the Hershey History Center. During the event, Hershey Lions Club president Steve Gallerizzo, along with the club’s historian, Pete Van Zandt, presented a flag to Laura Passuello, a representative of the Hershey History Center. The flag is one of approximately 40 that was made at the request of Carl Himmelberger, Hershey Lions Club president during the 1974-75 club year, for the township’s celebration of the 200th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. The flag that was recently presented to the Hershey History Center is believed to have been among those presented by Hershey Lions Club president John Robbins during the bicentennial celebration kickoff program that was held at Hershey Junior High School on Feb. 22, 1976. Before finding its way to the History Center, the flag was donated to the Hershey Lions Club by the family of the late Carl Himmelberger, a former club member, and his wife, the late Kemmy Himmelberger. Kemmy was a founding member of the Federated Women’s Club of Hershey and was chairperson of the bicentennial celebration kickoff program. Lions Clubs are groups of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs. Projects of the Hershey club include eye

exams and glasses for residents in need, local student scholarships, sponsorship of youth sports teams, the provision of meals at the Ronald McDonald House, disaster response, Grace United Methodist’s Ready for School project and tree planting. The club also regularly collects nonperishable food items for donation to the Hershey Food Bank. The club has

provided hundreds of pounds of food, as well as monetary donations. Club member Cliff Passuello, who spearheads the food collection effort, was recently recognized by Lions Clubs International for his leadership efforts. The Hershey Lions Club recently resumed in-person meetings. For more information about the club, visit www.hersheylions.org.

Workshops To Explore Fraktur Bird Designs Mennonite Life will offer two workshops that explore the Pennsylvania German art of Fraktur. This type of art was created by Pennsylvania Germans during the 18th through the mid-19th centuries and features calligraphic text decorated with colorful birds, hearts, and flowers. The first workshop, Fanciful Fraktur Birds, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 19, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Mennonite Life Community Room, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster. Emily Smucker-Beidler will share information about birds prevalent in southeastern Pennsylvania, and participants will find connections through Fraktur images. They will also learn the origins of the polka-dot, the checkerboard, and various striped patterns in Fraktur. Participants will receive tips for drawing original works in the Fraktur style and then adapt designs from historical works using light boards. Participants will complete a 5-by-7-inch Fraktur bird with provided materials. There is a fee for

Lynn Sommer and Jim King will present the workshop Fraktur & Grain-Painted Frame online via Zoom on Saturday, March 5, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Participants, working from home, will paint a provided bird

and tulip design using traditional colors and techniques. They will grain paint a frame to display their art. Glaze and a picture frame are included in the workshop fee. Participants will need to gather additional required materials. Preregistration is required by Monday, Feb. 21, at http://bit.ly/ FrakturFrame.

Returning speakers are Jason McDougall, who will present “Ways to Lower Your Christian Education Costs”; Tim Shawaryn, who will speak on “Protecting Your Family for the Now and Then”; and Lamar King on “International Stewardship Impact.” “King brings a lot of the biblical presupposition as to why generosity is prompted throughout Scripture,” said Outlar. “We thought, ‘How can we teach younger people how to handle their money?’” said Outlar of the theme. “We are emphasizing that families with children (cannot) start too young to be grateful and show that gratitude through what you give … to others.” The workshops are free and include a continental breakfast. Readers who wish to register are asked to do so by Tuesday, March 8, at https://lccs.cc/legacy. Those who have questions may call 717-556-0711, ext. 200. Child care will be provided for children ages 2 to 8.

With a theme of “Generational Generosity,” this year’s financial workshop sponsored by Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS) will include topics to appeal to investors of a variety of ages, noted Sandy Outlar, the school’s community relations coordinator. “Whether young or old, we should be people of generosity,” said Outlar. The 2022 event, which will be held at LCCS, 2390 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 12, from 9 a.m. to noon, will feature Peter Greer, CEO of HOPE International, as the plenary speaker. Greer holds a master’s degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School, and he has worked in Rwanda, Cambodia, and Zimbabwe. He has co-authored 14 books, including “Watching Seeds Grow,” filled with practical steps for the young entrepreneur, which Greer wrote with his young son. Greer, who chose to speak on “Gratitude Generates Generosity,” said, “When entitlement is on the rise, we need a movement of gratitude. Gratitude is the antidote to cynicism and leads to healthier families, teams, schools, and communities.” He added, “Watch what happens when we unleash the positive potential of thankfulness.” Outlar said that Greer was chosen because of the type of ministry he leads. HOPE International, located in Lancaster, helps create financial solvency in 15 countries through savings and microfinance groups. “(HOPE) asks people to invest in people in Third World countries,” noted Outlar, who added that the people whose livelihoods are funded then

In October of 2021, Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, was informed that the Manheim Community Pool, where Aaron’s Acres has held its summer camp, would not reopen in the spring. “In 30 days, we

reached out to set up a meeting before Thanksgiving 2021. “(New Holland representatives) were more than accommodating,” said Paskoff. “ We needed an indoor facility if the weather was bad. We needed accessible bathrooms. They had everything.” Paskoff noted she specifically worked with pool manager Leo Ward, office manager Paula Walsh, and borough manager Dick Fulcher. “The pool will be open for us until noon so we can have the pool to ourselves (in the mornings),” said Paskoff, who added that New Holland representatives have been welcoming and supportive, and she is excited about using the park. For more than 20 years, Aaron’s Acres has provided socialization and recreation for children and young adults with special needs ages 5 to 21. The nonprofit organization held camp at the Jewish Community Center in Lancaster until 2013. Starting in 2014, the program was hosted by the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park. In 2019, more than 200 took part in camp. During 2020, Aaron’s Acres held virtual camp for 50 campers. In 2021, in-person camp was held, and the organization served 30 campers per two-

week session. In 2022, camps will be held on weekdays from Monday, June 20, to Friday, July 1; Monday, July 11, to Friday, July 22; and Monday, July 25, to Friday, Aug. 5. For several years now, Aaron’s Acres has been seeking a home of its own in the northern part of the county. On Paskoff’s wish list is housing for therapy alpacas, along with sheep, goats, and chickens. A property with space to grow herbs, vegetables, and flowers would give the organization the opportunity to expand the Aaron’s Acres Plus program, which began offering activities for 22- to 30year-olds in early 2019. Among the activities planned for adult clients are farming, working with the animals, and taking part in Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (Triple AOK), which allows participants with developmental disabilities to give back to others. Paskoff also hopes Aaron’s Acres can open a café to be manned by participants. “We are hoping to kick off a capital campaign in 2022,” said Paskoff, who noted the organization is looking for an existing building to renovate to meet its needs. More information about Aaron’s Acres may be found at www.aaronsacres.org.
