The SSBVM community, including school students, parishioners and KOC members, presented the fire department with the donations on Feb. 3. In addition to accepting the donations on behalf of Menear, members of the Middletown Volunteer Fire Department brought a fire truck to the school for the students to enjoy. According to a statement issued by Middletown Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Kenton L. Whitebread Jr., Menear was injured while fighting a fire that occurred in the 500 block of Water Street in Royalton Borough. While the first responders were working to fight the fire, the second floor of the building collapsed, and four firefighters became trapped. The three firefighters from the Swatara Fire Rescue

Annual Campground Directory Published The Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association (PCOA) released the 2022 directory of its Pennsylvania Campground Directory on Jan. 1. This 68-page, fourcolor glossy magazine lists 222 campgrounds and RV resorts in Pennsylvania. The annual PCOA Directory divides the state into eight geographic areas, and the directory includes maps, color coding, and detailed facility listings for PCOA member campgrounds within each area. Each listing includes the association member’s name, mailing address, phone number, access directions, number of sites, and facilities available. PCOA president Ryan McFarland noted that over half of the campgrounds also have cabin and
cottage rentals. Nearly half of the printed copies of the directory are given to campgrounds, RV dealerships, chambers of commerce, visitors’ bureaus, and Pennsylvania information centers, and a large number of copies are distributed at 35 RV shows across the northeastern U.S. The directory is available for free. Members of the public can order the directory by visiting www.pacamping.com or calling 610-767-5026. PCOA is an association of private campground owners dedicated to the advancement of family camping. The group is an affiliate of the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds, which represents 3,000 commercial parks throughout the U.S.

Quick Tips For Breakfast Meals Breakfast long has been touted as the most important meal of the day. After a good night’s rest, breakfast refuels the body and energizes it for the day ahead. However, hectic mornings compel many people to skip breakfast. Individuals can try the following tips to help them enjoy a healthy breakfast and still get to school or work on time. Slow cookers are not just for dinner. Slow cookers can be used to cook a variety of breakfast foods, including oatmeal, eggs, or grits. Simply mix up the ingredients, set on low, and let the breakfast cook overnight. Macronutrient is the scientific term for proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Nutritionists suggest mixing macronutrients in meals to get the most benefits from well-rounded meals. Individuals should aim for 20 grams of protein, 15 to 20 grams of fat, and about 50 grams of carbs, with at least five grams of fiber. Another option is to develop a custom granola. Oats, nuts, and dried fruits
can be mixed up to make a signature granola blend. It is easy to eat dry or with milk and makes a quick, healthy breakfast. Individuals can embrace the no-cook overnight oatmeal method. Simply layer oats, Greek yogurt, applesauce or other fruit purees, cinnamon, and almond milk in a mason jar and place it in the refrigerator overnight. The oats will get tender without cooking, and the meal will be ready in the morning. Smoothies are a tasty option. All the prep work for healthy vegetable- and fruitrich smoothies, including chopping and preparing the ingredients, can be done the night before. In the morning, the prepared ingredients can be blended with protein powder or oats and ice. Breakfast burritos offer a portable option. Eggs can be scrambled in advance with diced peppers and onions and stored in containers in the refrigerator. In the morning, the mixture can be placed onto a tortilla, topped with cheese, and heated in a skillet or in the microwave.

Veterans Urged To Review Benefits The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) has noted that the start of a new year is a good time for veterans to meet with an accredited professional to ensure they are receiving or maximizing the benefits they have earned through their service. A benefits review is simple and often takes place by phone or virtually. Veterans are reminded that they should never pay for help applying for their benefits. Safeguarding military paperwork, especially the DD214, which is used to verify military service, is an important first step for securing benefits. The easiest way to
manage military documents is to make sure they are filed in a safe place immediately upon leaving the military. Veterans can file their documents for free at their county courthouse of record to secure them until needed, which can often be decades in the future. Anyone who needs assistance locating his or her military documentation can call 800-547-2838 toll-free or email RA-REQ@pa.gov. Another key step is for veterans to apply for federal health care and state benefits by visiting their local county director of veterans affairs or area accredited veterans’ service organizations to find out what benefits they may be eli-
gible for and to get help applying for those benefits. A complete list of county directors and their contact information can be found by visiting www.dmva.pa.gov and clicking on Contact Your County Director. Contact information for veteran service officers can be found by searching for Veteran Service Officer Grant Program on the aforementioned website. In addition to connecting with a county director or an accredited veterans’ service organization, all of Pennsylvania’s nearly 800,000 veterans are encouraged to sign up for the DMVA Veterans Registry, a free tool that electronically delivers timely
information about the state benefits, programs and services available to veterans. Veterans, family members, and people who work with veterans can sign up by computer or mobile device at www.register.dmva.pa.gov. There are more than 200 accredited veteran service officers in Pennsylvania working with the DMVA, county offices, and several veterans’ service organizations who will provide the review process at no cost. These veteran advocates are highly trained in the regulations and processes for reviewing benefits. To learn more about the DMVA, visit www.facebook.com /padmva.
Organ Dedication Concert Planned Arts on the Square, a series of music and fine arts events, will present internationally known virtuoso organist Ken Cowan in the dedicatory concert of the J. Nedra Schilling Organ, Orgues Létourneau Opus 136, on Friday, Feb. 25. The event will take place at Market Square Presbyterian Church, 20 S. Second St., Harrisburg, at 7:30 p.m. Cowan will play works by Bach, Saint-Saëns, Wagner
and Widor, as well as the world premiere of “Michelangelo Fantasy” by central Pennsylvania composer Scott H. Eggert, professor emeritus of music at Lebanon Valley College. Eggert’s piece was inspired by the reading of the poetry of Italian Renaissance artist and sculptor Michelangelo Buonarroti. The organ, built in 2020 in Saint-Hyacinthe, Québec, Canada, by Orgues
Létourneau Ltd., has four keyboards and 83 ranks of pipes in a case high in a gallery at the rear of the sanctuary. The organ is named for the late J. Nedra Schilling, a longtime member of the church and choir and a community philanthropist. Cowan maintains a rigorous performing schedule, which takes him to major concert venues and churches in America, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Admission is free, but tickets
must be obtained in advance at www.marketsquarechurch.org/ concerts. Seating is limited, and masking is required. Parking will be provided by the church in the adjacent Market Square Garage. The church is accessible to people with disabilities. For more information, visit the aforementioned website or www.facebook.com/ artsonthesquareMSPC or contact Tyler Canonico at 717-2571270, ext. 18, or canonico@ marketsquarechurch.org.

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Greater Hershey Area -
The Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy (KSCA) will accept applications for its first-ever cadet class in July. The Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy is designed to give academically challenged teens a chance to learn leadership skills, self-discipline, and responsibility while working toward finishing their education and building a brighter future. The opening of the academy at Fort Indiantown Gap in Lebanon County formally establishes the National Guard Bureau’s Youth ChalleNGe Program in Pennsylvania. The program is open to
male and female Pennsylvania residents ages 16 to 18 who are failing to progress in high school or may not be on a clear path to graduating. Applicants must be willing to be drug free, free of felony convictions, and voluntarily commit to the program. The program lasts for 17 months, with the first five months consisting of residential training at Fort Indiantown Gap followed by one year of mentorship back in the community. For detailed eligibility requirements and to begin the application process, visit www.dmva.pa.gov and look
under Keystone Challenge Academy at the top of the page. To have an application mailed or to talk with someone about this program, contact the academy at ra-mv pachallenge@pa.gov, 717-8617767, or 717-861-8831. The KSCA is a joint effort between the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) and the National Guard Bureau in consultation with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). Cadets will be introduced to the military structure and focus on eight core components: academic excellence, physical fitness,
leadership and followership, responsible citizenship, job skills, service to the community, health and hygiene, and life coping skills. Graduates may receive high school credits, credentials, or a GED. There is no tuition cost to attend. Meals, housing, uniforms, and school supplies are provided at no charge. The National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program currently operates 40 Youth Challenge sites in 31 states and territories. The program is both federally and state funded. More details can be found at www.ngchallenge.org or www.ngyf.org.
PennDOT Posts Online Services PennDOT reminds Pennsylvania residents that it offers online methods for fulfilling their driver licensing and motor vehicle needs. Customers may obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services through PennDOT’s website, including all forms, publications, and driver training materials. There are no additional fees for using online services. Driver and vehicle online services are available 24 hours
a day, seven days a week and include non-commercial driver’s license, photo ID, and vehicle registration renewals; driver-history services; changes of address; driver license and vehicle registration restoration letters; payment of a driver license or vehicle insurance restoration fee; driver license and photo ID duplicates; and driver exam scheduling. Additionally, customers may upload their emergency contact

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful announced that registration is open for the 2022 Pick Up Pennsylvania, a community improvement initiative. A community improvement event may be registered from Tuesday, March 1, through Tuesday, May 31, and receive free trash bags, gloves, and safety vests provided by support from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and PennDOT, while supplies last. Events can include litter cleanups, illegal dump cleanups, community greening and beautification projects, special collections, and education events. Events must be registered to receive free cleanup supplies. As part of this event, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association will sponsor trash disposal, free of charge or at a reduced rate, for registered program participants at participating landfills from Friday, April 1, through Saturday, April 30, with prior approval.
This spring, all Pennsylvanians are invited to clean up vacant lots, streets, and riverbanks; plant gardens and trees; or mulch a local playground. Through cleaning up litter and making small improvements to shared community spaces, like planting a tree or flowers or painting a community structure, the campaign aims to help create safer, healthier, and more livable neighborhoods. To host an event, join a nearby event, or inquire about free supplies and trash disposal, visit www.keeppabeautiful .org or contact Michelle Dunn at 877-772-3673, ext. 113, or mdunn@keeppabeautiful.org. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful recommends following all federal, state, and local health and safety guidelines for COVID-19 in effect at the time of the event, including masking and social distancing. To become a supporter of the 2022 Pick Up Pennsylvania initiative, contact Shannon Reiter at 724-836-4121 or sreiter@keeppabeautiful.org.

The American Red Cross invites community members to become volunteers. Local volunteers enable the Red Cross to support its community and neighbors in need every day. In the last year, Greater Pennsylvania Red Cross volunteers provided aid, including food and shelter, to over 6,300 people affected by home fires and other disasters in Pennsylvania. Among the available volunteer positions are a transportation specialist and Disaster Action Team members. Transportation specialists are the link between blood donors and blood recipients. They deliver blood, platelets, and other blood products to processing centers and to
hospitals for patient use. Each day, people are forced from their homes due to fires, storms, and other disasters. Disaster Action Teams meet the disaster-caused needs of individuals and households, such as lodging and clothing, and connect people with long-term recovery services. Training is free. To learn more, visit www.redcross.org /volunteertoday. COVID-19 vaccination is required for inperson volunteer roles. When considering volunteer opportunities, individuals should review the CDC guidance for people who are at higher risk for severe illness, consult their health care provider, and follow local guidance.

Heating equipment and chimneys should be cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. Anything that can burn should be kept at least 3 feet away from all heating equipment, including furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, and space heaters. For
