The Hershey Lions Club was organized and chartered in 1944 and has been continuously serving the residents of Derry Township since then. Projects include eye exams and glasses for residents in need, scholarships for local students, sponsorship of youth sports teams, and medical equipment assistance. Québécois Band To Present Concert
WWII Roundtable To Meet
HERSHEY/HUMMELSTOWN/PALMYRA
On Thursday, March 7, at 7 p.m., Mae Krier will share her wartime experiences at the monthly meeting of the Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable. The meeting will take place at Grace United Methodist Church (UMC), 433 E. Main St., Hummelstown. Krier was one of the female workers known as “Rosie the Riveters,” a term first used in a 1942 song that described a tireless assembly line worker. Later, the combination of Norman Rockwell’s cover painting for The Saturday Evening Post and the iconic “We Can Do It!” poster elevated “Rosie” to symbolize women’s significant role in the production of aircraft, ships, and munitions. During World War II, Krier, just out of high school, decided to leave North Dakota and go to the West Coast for the summer with her sister and her best friend to join millions of other
American women who entered the labor force during the war. After arriving in Seattle, Krier began a two-year stint at Boeing Aircraft, producing B-17 and B-29 bombers. Per a Senate resolution, March 21, 2017, was designated as the first-ever National Rosie the Riveter Day. The Central Pennsylvania WWII Roundtable is a nonprofit organization that provides a forum for WWII veterans, authors, historians, and citizens to share their knowledge and experiences related to the war. Meetings, held the first Thursday of every month, begin at 7 p.m. at Grace UMC. Anyone with an interest in WWII is invited to attend the meetings. There are no membership or admission fees. For more information, readers may contact Charlie Lloyd at charlie.centralpaww2rt@gmail.com or 717-503-2862 or visit www.centralpaww2roundtable.org.
Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) will sponsor a concert by Québécois band Bon Débarras on Sunday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m. at Appalachian Brewing Company, 50 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. The band brings together a fusion of Québécois music, traditional step-dancing, and global influences. The trio aims to unite the worlds of music, dance, and poetry through a collaboration between Montreal artists Dominic Desrochers, Jean-Francois Dumas, and Véronique Plasse utilizing guitar, banjo, violin, and harmonica. Desrochers grew up in a family of singers, dancers, and accordionists. Over time he added percussive dance to his passion for poetry and music. Dumas, an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, grew up in a family of musicians and singers and has performed with artists including
La Bottine Souriante, Cedric Watson, Juan Sebastian Larobina, and Edgar Bori. Plasse, a trained actress and musician, is passionate about Quebec traditional music. Plasse, a violinist and singer, has been active on the international folk scene for about 20 years. Bon Débarras’ self-titled debut album was nominated for an ADISQ award in the Traditional Music Album of the Year category. The band was nominated again in 2013 for “Errance,” its second recording. Separate ticket prices have been set for general admission, for SFMS members, and for students ages 3 to 22. Advance tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.com or by calling 800-838-3006. Chorale Releases Studio Recording The Susquehanna Chorale recently released a studio recording featuring repertoire from its spring 2018 concert series, titled “Roots & Wings.” The Susquehanna Chorale, founded in 1981 by conductor Linda L. Tedford, is a nationally recognized adult chamber ensemble of 35 singers chosen by audition. “Roots & Wings” celebrates the breadth of human experience and how relationships that are rooted in faith, family, and friendship may inspire people to achieve their dreams. Fauré’s “Cantique de Jean Racine,” American spirituals, and Rhonda Sandberg’s modern arrangement of Bach’s “Come, Sweet Death” pay tribute to the historical roots of faith. The enduring roots of human relationships are the focus of “Jenny Rebecca,” Bob Chilcott’s
setting of Christina Rosetti’s poem “Remember Me,” and Eriks E∫envald’s “Only in Sleep,” based on Sara Teasdale’s poem about childhood friends returning in her dreams. The roots of the United States’ musical heritage are honored with songs from early America, including “Nelly Bly” and a men’s arrangement of “Aura Lee” as well as Copland’s “Long Time Ago” and “I Bought Me a Cat.” The program also includes Sean Kirchner’s “Unclouded Day.” “Roots & Wings” is the chorale’s eighth nationally distributed recording. Three of the chorale’s recordings were considered for Grammy nomination. “Roots & Wings” is available for purchase by calling 717-533-7859 or visiting www.susquehanna chorale.org.

Art teacher Beth Shook directed eight students from the Mount Joy school’s newly formed Janus Ambassadors club in hanging several framed pieces and arranging colorful papier-mache letters - spelling out “READ TODAY” - on two wall shelves. Two of the art pieces were created by club members. The entire task took little more than half an hour. But it was another opportunity for these students to leave their campus, located on Lefever Road, and experience a different aspect of the Mount Joy community and, if needed, lend a helping hand. The idea behind the club, formed in January, is to help students develop communication and leadership skills while becoming better
acquainted with the town where their private day school is located. “Our school is an independent school, sitting in the middle of the community, (but) we’re not hooked into the community in the same way a public school is,” stated club co-adviser Christine Koslosky, who teaches Spanish and language arts at Janus. “The big idea is to have them being able to get out and interact with adults in the community and practice social skills,” said co-adviser Patrick Pressley, who teaches history and language arts. The school, with a current enrollment of 63 pupils in grades one through 12, draws students from several surrounding counties. In fact, of the club’s eight student members - seven high-schoolers and one fifth-grader - only ninth-grader Zoe Soderblom is from Mount Joy. The others hail from Wrightsville, Hershey, Palmyra, Wyomissing, Lancaster and Shrewsbury. One of the club’s outings was to See Janus pg 10

Janus from pg 9 the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce, where the students learned about the western Lancaster County town. The school, which is a member of the Chamber, also ran a notice in the Chamber newsletter, describing the club and seeking hosts. The club meets after school on Mondays and will be active into March, with plans to continue next school year. In addition to the Chamber and Juniper Village, the club has visited the Milanof-Schock Library, where the students learned about using online databases and went on a treasure hunt. The students also were slated to return to Juniper Village for a sing-along with residents. Another excursion will be a visit to the Olde Square Inn, where they will get a lesson in etiquette. “I didn’t really know a whole lot about Mount Joy,” said Madison Kauffman, a ninth-grader from Wyomissing. “It’s really helped show me a lot of the places in the community of Mount Joy.” “We believe firmly in our school that we need to get the kids out,” said Koslosky, who used to run a global studies program that saw students travel to Spain, Costa Rica and Italy. “If we can’t get them to Costa Rica, we should at least try to get them out in Mount Joy.” Koslosky noted that the club is valuable in that the students “understand that they have a connection to the community that goes beyond the doors of our school.” So far, the club has gotten good reviews from the students. “We’ve all learned ... to work together and to try to help the community as much as we can,” said Emma Purvis, a 10th-grader from Wrightsville. “It’s such an amazing time to make people so happy whenever we’re around them. And we just make their day and it makes me happy,” stated Colleen Klahr, a 10th-grader from Wyomissing. It is especially gratifying for Zoe, who moved to Mount Joy a couple years ago. “I love it. It’s awesome,” she said. “I love going out into the community and helping people and getting to know other places, like Juniper.” Any Mount Joy businesses or organizations interested in hosting the Janus Ambassadors in the future should contact Koslosky at 717-653-0025, ext. 126, or ckoslosky@thejanusschool.org.
