Local music teacher wins notable award
BY FRANCINE FULTONWhen Lower Dauphin Middle School band director Greg Hutchison was informed that he was the recipient of the 2022 Educator of Note Award by the Central Pennsylvania Music Hall of Fame, he didn’t quite believe it. “When I got the email, I almost didn’t check it. I thought it was a phishing email at first,” he admitted. “I wasn’t sure they had the right person.”
Seven Sorrows plans fish fry, egg sale
SevenSorrows Catholic Church in Middletown has announced its fish fry and its chocolate egg sale.
The chocolate eggs will be sold through Easter Sunday, April 9, or as long as supplies last. Customers may purchase peanut butter, coconut, or butter cream eggs coated in either milk chocolate or dark chocolate. The hand-dipped eggs will be sold for a fee per egg.
The 2.8-ounce eggs have received regional recognition through various media outlets. In 2019, nearly 81,000 eggs were sold through businesses, through direct orders, and at Seven Sorrows Parish. Roughly 6,000 pounds of peanut butter, 870 pounds of butter/margarine, and
4,320 pounds of chocolate were used. This year, 100 volunteers will prepare and distribute the eggs.
All eggs will be sold on a firstcome, first-served basis while quantities last. Eggs will be sold at the Egg Store, located in the church parking lot at 280 N. Race St., Middletown. The Egg Store will be open on Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.; and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., weather permitting, and while supplies last. Visitors should enter via Race Street for the safety of the school children.
Eggs may also be purchased at the parish’s weekly drive-through
fish fry, as well as at several local businesses. Eggs will not be sold at either the parish or the school office this year.
The fish fry will be held as a drive-through at Seven Sorrows School, 360 E. Water St., Middletown, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Fridays through March 31. The school campus lot will only be accessible after 4:15 p.m.
The menu will include fish and chips, baked haddock, fried shrimp, pierogies, macaroni and cheese, fish sandwiches, coleslaw, and vegetables. Three desserts will be available: chocolate cake with peanut butter icing, chocolate fudge cake, and lemon berry mascarpone cake. The menu is subject to change.
No call-in orders may be placed. All orders will be filled on a firstcome, first-served basis. Cash, check, and MasterCard, Visa, and Discover cards will be accepted.
For more than 25 years, the parish has been serving hungry patrons who come from throughout southcentral Pennsylvania to enjoy the meatless meals. In 2019, more than 5,000 pounds of haddock, 700 crab cakes, and 180 pounds of macaroni and cheese were served to more than 7,300 guests by at least 100 volunteers each week.

After he realized that the award was legitimate, his skepticism soon
turned to appreciation. “I know who won last year, so I am grateful to be included in a list of great educators,” he said.
Hutchison will be honored live on stage at the fourth annual Central Pennsylvania Music Awards (CPMA) and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Thursday, March 30, at the Hershey Theatre, 15 Caracas Ave. Tickets to the event are available at www.ticketmaster.com by searching for “4th Annual CPMAs & HOF Induction Ceremony.”
“CPMA is an organization that is really dedicated to promoting music,” Hutchison said. “They run an awards show. I have been told from past participants that they roll out a red carpet and it is a very fun and formal event - like an awards show you may see on TV.”
Hutchison, who resides in Mechanicsburg, has been the band director at Lower Dauphin Middle School in Hummelstown since the beginning of the 2002-03 school year. He teaches sixth-grade concert band, a combined seventh- and eighth-grade concert band, the jazz

band and a music class. He also serves as the assistant director for the Lower Dauphin High School marching band.
When asked his favorite aspect of teaching music, Hutchison said it is watching students grow and learn as they progress from middle school to high school.
“To see (the students) go from grades six to 12 and getting to know their families is the highlight of my job. I know these kids and their families for seven years by the time they graduate,” he said. “I also have a really great colleague at the high school, Keith Richardson, head of the marching band.”
In addition to teaching, Hutchison has served as the president of the Dauphin County Music Educators Association, as well as vice president, president and immediate past president of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s (PMEA)
District 7. In 2013, he was the recipient of the PMEA’s Citation of Excellence, which is awarded to an outstanding middle school music teacher.
Hutchison is a graduate of Penn State University, where he studied trombone and received his Bachelor of Science in music education. He also holds a Master of Education from Cabrini University.
Hutchison said he does not know who nominated him for the Educator of Note Award, but he suspects that it may be a Lower Dauphin parent or student.
“It’s a great place to be,” Hutchison said, explaining his longevity in the Lower Dauphin School District. “Twenty-one years ago I did not have plans to stay in central Pennsylvania. What kept me is the community. We have great parents and I teach great kids and I’ve always had administrative support as well. I don’t think the grass is greener anywhere else.”

Meeting to highlight women aviators in WWII
The Central Pennsylvania World War II (WWII)
Roundtable will meet on Thursday, March 2, at 7 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 433 E. Main St., Hummelstown. Sarah Myers will speak about American women aviators in WWII.
During World War II, the United States Air Force admitted women pilots for the first time into a program called the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). Gen-
der discrimination was but one of the obstacles these aviators faced. The media labeled them the “Lipstick Squadron,” glamorizing them and ignoring the dangerous roles they were assigned. Of nearly 25,000 applicants from 1942-44, only 1,100 women earned their wings. Thirty-eight WASPs died in service to their country. Myers’ book manuscript

Two third-graders at Londonderry Elementary School were recently recognized by Lower Dauphin Communities That Care and Hummelstown Police Department for doing the right thing. Benjamin White and Sawyer Borrelli were nominated by recess aide Jennifer Clark for informing her about a poten-
tially dangerous situation on the playground.
They were recognized in front of their classmates at lunch and rewarded with a gift card to Target; a Do the Right Thing T-shirt, pencil and certificate; and a Subway coupon. This month’s program sponsor was Hummelstown Mayor Dave

Birding is a popular hobby, and it is not uncommon for enthusiasts to travel great distances to see beautiful birds in serene settings. However, individuals also can entice birds to come to them using backyard bird feeders.
After choosing a bird feeder, novices may not know which food to fill it with. The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) has provided guidance.
Individuals who want to attract hummingbirds can do so with nectar, which the NWF describes as colored sugar water. Nectar must be placed into a hummingbird feeder and might also attract orioles to the backyard.
Black-oil sunflower can attract an array of birds, including blue jays, cardinals, chickadees, and sparrows. Novices may like that blackoil sunflower seed can even be found at many grocery stores, which may appeal to

Shrimp, feta, and dill spaghetti
While spaghetti is most often associated with Italy, pasta has deep ties to other Mediterranean nations like Greece and several territories of the Middle East and Arabian Peninsula. It has been enjoyed around the world for centuries.
The flavor profile of spaghetti can change significantly depending on which ingredients are added. For example, Spaghetti with Shrimp, Feta and Dill, courtesy of “Real Simple Dinner
Tonight: Done!” (Time Home Entertainment) from the editors of Real Simple, may take its inspiration
from Greek cooking.
Spaghetti with Shrimp, Feta and Dill (Serves 4)
Ingredients:
12 ounces spaghetti 1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon
olive oil
1 pound peeled and deveined
large shrimp
Kosher salt and black pepper
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
3 ounces feta, crumbled (3/4 cup)
2 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh dill
Directions:
1 - Cook the pasta according to the package directions. Drain and return it to the pot.
2 - Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Season the shrimp with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper and cook, tossing occasionally, until opaque throughout, 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in the lemon juice and zest.
3 - Add the shrimp mixture to the pasta, along with the feta, dill, the remaining 1/4 cup of oil and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Toss to combine.
individuals who live in remote locations without specialty bird stores nearby.
Seed mixes also can be found at grocery stores and appeal to a variety of birds. Individuals who want to keep their feeders close to their decks or patios may want to look for mixes described as “no-mess.” The NWF indicated that these mixes have been de-hulled, which means there will not be as big a pile of unwanted seeds beneath the feeder. When examining regular mixes, birds choose the seeds they want and discard the others, often dropping them to the ground beneath the feeder. The NWF reported that mixes tend to attract ground-feeding birds, such as doves and sparrows.
Suet is sought after in winter by bird lovers who want to help birds stay healthy and strong during times of year
when food sources may be less available. Suet requires a suet feeder, which is unlike most bird feeders. Suet comes in squares and not in seed form, though seeds are typically mixed into the gelatinous cake. Despite its appearance, which can seem like a square block of fat, suet is an excellent source of protein for birds in winter.
The NWF noted that goldfinches love thistle, or nyjer, a small, high-quality seed. Because thistle is something of a specialty seed, birders who want to put it out will need to purchase a finch feeder.
Birding has millions of devotees across the globe.
Knowing what to feed birds can be a great way for birding enthusiasts to attract these beautiful creatures to their backyards.

Disaster resources available to farmers
Natural disasters are often devastating, resulting in the loss of lives, livelihoods, and homes. The agricultural sector is especially vulnerable to natural disasters. However, support programs are in place to provide assistance should farmers need it in the aftermath of a natural disaster.
The Farm Service Agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture noted that the Livestock Forage Disaster Program provides compensation to eligible livestock producers who have suffered grazing losses due to drought or fire on land that is native or improved pastureland with permanent vegetative cover. Assistance also is available when land planted specifically for grazing has been affected by drought or fire.
The Livestock Indemnity Program provides benefits to livestock producers for livestock deaths in excess of normal mortality caused by adverse weather or by
attacks by animals reintroduced into the wild by the federal government.
The Emergency Loan Program provides loans to producers as they seek to recover from production and physical losses due to drought, flooding and other natural disasters. Loans also may be available after losses due to quarantine or by animal quarantine laws imposed in accordance with the Plant Protection Act.
The Emergency Conservation Program helps farmers and ranchers repair damage to farmlands caused by natural disasters. The program also helps put in place water conservation methods during severe drought.
The Noninsured Disaster Assistance Program pays covered producers of uninsurable crops when low yields, loss of inventory, or prevented planting occur due to natural disasters.
More information about these and other programs can be found at www.fsa.usda.gov.
