Dental kits containing a toothbrush and toothpaste are provided each February in conjunction with National Dental Health Month to both Lower Dauphin and Derry Township school districts. Healthy Choice Snack Packs are provided through Lower Dauphin Falcon Packs over the summer months, when many students do not receive lunch or breakfast because they are not in school. “We collect shelf-stable food items, package them and hand them out at the schools,” said Balog. “We give them a bag of (snacks) - pudding, yogurt, fruit cups, milk, juices and veggie chips.” The Giving Tree provides personal hygiene kits that are distributed to various Lower Dauphin

MAMS Team Places Second In Competition A team of seventh- and eighthgraders from Middletown Area Middle School (MAMS) recently placed second out of 15 teams at the annual Future Cities competition, which was held virtually this year. Students served as artists, writers, presenters and researchers for the project. The judges lauded the eightperson MAMS team on several aspects of the team’s city, called Perfeudum. The students considered their city’s location and its natural resources in their innovative solutions, such as the use of Neptune Balls, algae and seaweed from the Mediterranean Sea. They also focused on reusing and recycling of materials in creative ways. For example, consumers in Perfeudum can use 3D printers to replace broken or missing toy pieces instead of throwing See MAMS pg 2

The keel for the future USS Harrisburg (LPD 30), the Navy’s 14th San Antonioclass amphibious transport dock ship and the first Flight II ship, was laid at Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding on Jan. 28. The ship’s sponsor, Alexandra Curry, wife of Mayor Jim Curry of Middletown, had her initials etched into the keel plate by HII welders. A keel laying is the recognition of the start of a ship’s construction. It is the joining together of a ship’s modular components and the authentication or etching of an honoree’s initials into a ceremonial keel plate. The city of Harrisburg and the surrounding region play a central role in the national defense infrastructure, hosting myriad defense logistics and naval supply support activities that bring support and sustenance to the Navy’s fleet and the forward deployed sailors and

Marines. The USS Harrisburg is the second U.S. Navy ship to be named after the city of Harrisburg. The first was a troopship acquired during World War I. The LPD Flight II ships will be the functional replacement for the Whidbey Island class. The San Antonio class is designed to support embarking, transporting, and landing Marines and their equipment by conventional or air-cushioned landing craft. The ship’s capabilities are further enhanced by its flight deck and hangar, enabling the ship to operate a variety of Marine Corps helicopters and the Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft. Because of the ships’ inherent capabilities, they are able to support amphibious assaults, special operations, expeditionary warfare, or disaster relief missions, operating independently or as part of amphibious readiness groups (ARGs), expeditionary strike groups, or joint task forces.
Hershey Indivisible Team will present a virtual program on climate change on Wednesday, March 16, at 6:30 p.m. Rachel Mark, chapter leader of Harrisburg Citizens Climate Lobby, will share information about the upcoming Pennsylvania Climate Emergence in Harrisburg. This collection was established through the donation of 133 children’s books from Dr. Todd Allen, Lonette Allen, and Bryce Allen. Todd is the founder of the Common Ground Project, a non-

The resources will be primarily used by students in the university’s education department for coursework and field experiences, but the reading space and books are open to the public. From brightly colored furniture to framed prints of book illustrations, the collection
and space are meant to welcome readers into stories that illustrate the human experience. The public may visit the Bridge to Freedom room within Murray Library during regular open hours.
