Jess Matincheck’s painting “My Version of a Modern-Day Rosie the Riveter” was recently featured on the cover of The State College Magazine, as well as on T-shirts.
Matincheck’s “Rosie” Featured On Magazine painting by Middletown Area High School (MAHS) sophomore Jessica Matincheck recently garnered attention both locally and in State College. Jess created the artwork, “My Version of a Modern-Day Rosie the Riveter,” as a class assignment during the height of the coronavirus shutdown in the spring of 2020. At that time, MAHS students were learning from home. High school art teacher Elizabeth Strite challenged her students to use the pandemic as inspiration for a specific art project. Students were instructed to create a social commentary piece with a strong visual statement about an aspect of the COVID-19 pandemic. Jess chose to honor health care workers with her

As an employee of Penn State Health, Jess’ mother, Lynn Matincheck, submitted the artwork to be considered for Penn State’s “Viral Imaginations: COVID-19 Project.” This online gallery archives “Pennsylvanians’ first-person, imaginative and artistic expressions made in response to their lived experience of the coronavirus pandemic.” Jess’ painting was selected to be included in the online gallery and can be viewed by visiting https://viralimaginations.psu.edu /visual-art-gallery/ and searching for “My Version of a Modern-Day Rosie the Riveter.”

version of the famous “Rosie the Riveter” painting. “I wanted to paint a prominent female figure because nurses were high risk and they are literally on the frontline and I wanted to incorporate both in one piece,” she said. Jess’ version of Rosie is Mexican with black hair, dark eyes and brown skin. In the acrylic painting, Rosie is wearing a mask and gloves, and she sports a stethoscope. She communicates the strength and courage of health care workers during the pandemic. “I chose to make her Mexican because my grandmother is of Mexican descent on her father’s side. I also made her a nurse because of their importance during this struggling time,” Jess said. “I sketched her out in about 25 to
Sarah LaVerdiere of Grantville is a member of the inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts, an honor typically earned only by Boy Scouts. In February 2019, Boy Scouts of America permitted girls to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, which is the highest rank in Boy Scouting. The Boy Scouting branch of the organization also adopted a new name at that time - Scouts BSA. Sarah is a member of Scouts BSA Troop 262 in Grantville, Dauphin County, which is part of the New Birth of Freedom Council. She said she became interested in Boy Scouting after watching her brothers benefit from the program. “I was a Girl Scout for eight years before I joined Scouts BSA. This is a Scouting family, and both of my brothers were in (Boy Scouting) for as long as I can remember,” Sarah said. “I knew it helped them a lot. I
am in Girl Scouts and I thought, ‘Why not be in Scouts BSA, too?’” Sarah’s Scouts BSA troop is sponsored by St. John’s United Methodist Church in Grantville, which is where she completed her required Eagle Scout service project. “The church that sponsors my Scouts BSA troop also owns a house across the street - the annex house. Nurses who work with Jess’ mother said they loved what the painting represented, and they expressed interest in purchasing T-shirts bearing the image. With the help of With Kidz in Mind, T-shirts are now being worn by nurses both locally and outside the area. Jess and her family made no profit on the T-shirts or her art; nurses simply paid for the cost of the shirts. Modern-Day Rosie had made it into a gallery and onto a T-shirt, but she was not finished yet. The editors of The State College Magazine in State College were developing a story about the healing power of art. In their research, they came across Penn State’s “Viral Imaginations” gallery and Jess’ unique Rosie caught their attention. They contacted Jess about using her artwork for another article they were developing that would archive memories of the pan-
demic. Not only did they want to use Jess’ artwork, but also it was selected for the front cover of the magazine. The magazine is available to view at www.statecollege magazine.com/pdf-archives/. Rosie was not Jess’ first piece of artwork to receive recognition. Jess became interested in art as a student at Reid Elementary, where she was featured as the Artist of the Month on several occasions and won a poster contest in fourth grade. She was recently featured as the artist for the 2020 Middletown Area School District holiday card, and her passion has caught the attention of several local organizations, as well. As seen in her art displayed in her home art studio, Jess specializes in female portraits. “I like the beauty of various skin tones, makeup, jewelry, hair, and fashion,” she commented.

We all had masks on and had to social distance,” Sarah said. “I supplied lunch, but we had to spread out (when eating).” Sarah hopes to have her Eagle Court of Honor as soon as it is safe to do so. “I got the Eagle Scout rank patch that goes on the left pocket of your uniform and the Eagle Scout neckerchief,” she said. Sarah credited her family members, including her parents, Trevor and Michele LaVerdiere, for their support through the Eagle Scout process. Sarah, who recently turned 15, completed her Eagle Scout service project a bit early - at the age of 14. “My mom has been amazing,” Sarah said. “She is the leader of both my troops. Her leadership is amazing. I would not be where I am today without her.” Sarah is currently working on her Gold Award, which is Girl Scouting’s equivalent to the Eagle Scout Award.

She also created a flower bed and placed decorative lattice around the front of the deck. “We added some railing as well,” she said. “There was one section that did not even have railing and the railing that was (around the deck) was shaky.” She contacted local businesses, who donated materials and all the money needed to complete the project. “A lot of my troop members and my family members came out to help me. We got it done in four days,” Sarah said. She said the most challenging aspect of the project was following COVID-19 precautions. “The hardest part was making sure everyone

A transportation service called Sweet Ride is now providing an alternative to traditional food delivery services in an effort to support local restaurants that have been affected by the pandemic. Sweet Ride delivers food from area restaurants at no cost to the buyer or the restaurant. Traditional food delivery services charge a delivery fee to the buyer and also charge the restaurant for using their service. Co-owners Mike Kucharski and Chase Kozlowski, both Derry Township residents, are reimagining the traditional transportation system with a business sup-
ported by corporate sponsorship and advertising. Instead of buyers and restaurants footing the bill, Sweet Ride gives companies a unique way to market their business, while supporting local restaurants and the community at the same time. Currently, Sweet Ride delivers from one area restaurant per night a few evenings a week. Those who live in the Hershey area can check the delivery schedule on the Sweet Ride Facebook or Instagram page and will soon be able to book directly at www.sweetridehershey.com. road, Kucharski and Kozlowski have delivered more than 100 meals from several area restaurants with plans to add more restaurants and more delivery dates in the near future. All Sweet Ride drivers are employees of the company to help ensure greater satisfaction than ride services that use contracted drivers. The next phase of Sweet Ride will feature Sweet Ride Circuit - a free ride share service that will launch tentatively in late 2021. Companies interested in learning more about advertising and marketing opportunities with Sweet Ride may visit the aforementioned website.

For 35 years, Align Life Ministries has been holding an annual Walk Run for Life fundraiser. This year, the organization formerly known as Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services will hold an expanded event called Move for Life: Walk Run Plus. An in-person event will be held on Saturday, May 8, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The fundraiser also features a virtual option for participation. “The in-person event will offer a 5K run and 1-mile walk simultaneously, starting at 9 a.m.,” said Heather Muncy, events director for Align Life Ministries. “If an individual or team prefers to participate virtually, they can choose their own safe, healthy, fun activity anytime between now and May 8.” For example, participants may choose to walk, run or even jump rope. The virtual component began last year, Muncy said, when the organization had to shift away from an in-person fundraiser due to the pandemic. “Participants decided to jump rope, dunk basketballs, take family hikes, bicycle rides, Frisbee, golf, run, walk … the possibilities were endless,” she recalled. “We then realized the opportunity to expand our event in general to include a virtual - or ‘plus’ - option.” Participants can decide the length and time of their activity, she explained, and then submit a photo or short video to show what they did. They can also plan to
attend the in-person event. “Those who are participating virtually can join us on May 8 for a grand celebration and pick up their prizes at the same time,” Muncy stated. The in-person event will feature a family-friendly walk and chip-timed 5K run as well as free Kids’ Zones with live entertainment, interactive inflatables, face painting, snow cones and more. Move for Life is an important event for the organization, Muncy noted, adding that it not only helps further the mission of promoting the sacredness of life, but it also helps raise funds to serve more people in need. “It is our biggest fundraising event, providing 15% of our annual budgeted income,” she stated. She encourages anyone to participate in the Move for Life, whether virtually or in person. “If you’re looking for ways to put your life-affirming beliefs into action and truly help your local community, please join us,” she remarked. “The funds you raise - whether it’s $50 or $5,000 - all are used to meet the immediate needs of the pregnant, parenting and post-abortive clients we serve. Your efforts help point people to Jesus. Plus, you get to enjoy a big celebration party with others who share your values in honoring God’s gift of life.” To learn more about Move for Life: Walk Run Plus or to register, readers may visit www.AlignLife Ministries.org, contact hmuncy@align lifeministries.org or call 717-2745128, ext. 315.

Open Stage Slates “Everyman”
Students Honored For Musical Skills
Open Stage will present a modern retelling of “Everyman.” The production may be viewed online through Sunday, March 21, with Friday and Saturday shows at 8 p.m. and Sunday shows at 3 p.m. “Everyman” was originally written in the late 15th century by an unknown author. In the course of the original story, the character Everyman, who represents all mankind, is summoned by Death to stand before God to recount his life in a final reckoning. The modern retelling was conceived by Chris Gibson, who is also directing the production. Gibson and Benny Benamati, who was cast in the titular role, collaborated to create a story of a social media influencer named Eman. The story incorporates some elements similar to the original, including a visit from Death as the story kicks off, this time portrayed as a conversation through a doorbell video. From there, the show uses video meetup software to tell the

Scholarship Applicants Sought The Lebanon Valley Conservancy has announced its environmental scholarship competition for 2021. The Richard H. and Karen R. Light Scholarship competition is open to any graduating high school student who is a resident of the Lebanon Valley; who is a student at Lebanon Valley College or HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College; or who intends to pursue a career in the environmental sciences. Richard and Karen Light were very active in working, teaching and fostering appreciation of the natural world in the Lebanon Valley. The scholarship established in their honor aims to help student environmentalists carry on the Lights’ mission. Application materials and more information may be obtained at www.TLVC.org. The submissions are due by Thursday, April 1. Formed in 2000, The Lebanon Valley Conservancy’s mission is to promote conservation of cultural, historical and natural resources through public awareness and environmental preservation. story of Eman frantically attempting to get someone to accompany him on his journey to the afterlife. “Everyman” is part play, part film, part social media interaction, and part long-form improv. It has an original score by Nicholas Werner. “Everyman” is the penultimate production in the 35th season at Open Stage. In order to make the season as accessible as possible, all ticketing is on a sliding scale. All tickets are available at www.openstagehbg.com.
