Geyers UMC plans Easter egg hunt
Geyers United Methodist Church (UMC), 1605 S. Geyers Church Road, Middletown, will hold its annual community Easter egg hunt on Palm Sunday, March 24, at 1 p.m. This event is free and open to the public and will be held rain or shine.
Children age 13 and under may bring their baskets to collect some of the more than 4,000 plastic eggs that will be scattered across the church lawn. In addition to the candy and toys inside the eggs, there will be free prizes for all the children. The Easter Bunny will be present for photos, and the Londonderry Fire Company will bring a fire truck to the event and offer goodies to attendees.
After the egg hunt, all children and adults may pick up a free bag lunch. Each meal will include a hot dog, chips, a dessert, and a drink.

Preservation society to feature historical dances
The Lower Swatara Township Historic Preservation Society will host a dance demonstration by the Victorian Dance Ensemble (VDE), the performing troupe of the Civil War Dance Foundation. The event will be held on Thursday, March 21, at 6 p.m. in the community hall at the Lower Swatara Township Fire Department, 1350 Fulling Mill Road, Middletown.
The troupe has presented programs for the Smithsonian Institution; Ken Burns’ American
Journey Tours; the National Park Service at Antietam; Arlington House; the C&O Canal; Gettysburg; the National Theatre in
Washington, D.C.; Harrisburg’s Whitaker Center for the Performing Arts; the National Civil War Museum; and the Pennsylvania
Manada Conservancy earns national recognition
Manada Conservancy achieved accreditation through the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, joining a network of more than 450 accredited land trusts across the nation that have demonstrated their commitment to professional excellence and to maintaining the public’s trust in their work.
“Accreditation demonstrates Manada Conservancy’s continuing commitment to permanent land conservation in Dauphin County,” said Will Dingman, executive director. “We are a stronger organization for
having gone through the rigorous accreditation program. Our strength means special places - such as the Kittatinny Ridgewill be protected forever, making central PA an even greater place for us and our children.” One of the conservancy’s partners in protecting the Kittatinny Ridge, the Nature Conservancy, provided significant encouragement and grant funding during the accreditation process.

State Museum, among other museums and historic sites. The VDE was named the Re-enactment Unit of the Year by the Civil War Trust in 2011 and received the President’s Volunteer Service Gold Award from President Barack Obama in 2016 for providing more than 3,480 hours of public service.

Manada Conservancy is dedicated to preserving the natural, historic, agricultural, and scenic resources of Dauphin County. This mission is achieved through land protection, environmental education, and community engagement. To date, the conservancy has protected nearly 3,000 acres of woodland, farmland, open space, and wetlands. Each year, several public education programs are presented free of charge on a variety of environmental topics, and volunteers have given many hours to plant trees along the Swatara Creek to reduce erosion and improve water quality. The conservancy also holds an annual native plant sale, now in its 24th year.

Roast turkey dinner set
Evangelical United Methodist Church, 157 E. Water St., Middletown, will serve a roast turkey dinner on Saturday, March 16, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. or until sold out. In addition to turkey, the menu will include homemade stuffing, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, cranberry sauce, and dessert. Guests may dine in or purchase takeouts.

Church to present hymn festival
Those who enjoy singing hymns or listening to hymns as a way to pray and hear scripture are invited to a hymn festival on Sunday, March 17, at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey. The concert will feature Derry Church’s Sanctuary Choir, orchestra and handbells. The concert is part of the church’s 2024 Arts Alive Cultural Series. A free will offering will be received. Handicapped parking and an elevator are available.
Linda Tedford, artistic director, founder and conductor of the Susquehanna Chorale, will direct the program in celebration of Derry’s 300th anniversary year. Featured hymns will include “How Firm a Foundation,” “A
Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” John Calvin’s “I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art” and “Praise Ye The Lord, The Almighty.”
The audience will join in singing five hymns. The Derry Ringers handbell ensemble will play, along with brass, percussion, strings, flute and clarinet, piano and organ. In between selections, the audience will learn about the church’s history that originated in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Historian to speak at meeting
The Hershey Civil War Roundtable will meet on Thursday, March 21, at Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 542, 8000 Derry St., Harrisburg, at 7:30 p.m. The program will also be livestreamed on Zoom and Facebook Live. After the program, a recording will be posted at www.hersheycwrt.org.
Historian Cooper Wingert will
present “The Confederate Approach on Harrisburg: The Gettysburg Campaign’s Northernmost Reaches.” In June 1863, Harrisburg braced for an invasion as the Confederate troops of Lt. Gen. Richard S. Ewell steadily moved toward the Pennsylvania capital. Capturing Carlisle en route, Ewell sent forth a brigade of cavalry under Brig. Gen. Albert Gallatin Jenkins to scout the defenses near Harrisburg. Wingert will trace the Confederates’ path to the gates of Harrisburg in these northernmost actions of the Gettysburg Campaign. Wingert will share new research finds, including new accounts from soldiers and new details about African American troops that volunteered to defend the state capital.
