Piano trio sets performance
The Mendelssohn Piano Trio will perform at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, in the sanctuary at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey.
The trio consists of Ya-Ting Chang, a pianist from Taiwan; Peter Sirotin, a violinist from Ukraine; and Fiona Thompson, a cellist from England. Chang will play Derry Church’s 9-foot 2019 Model D Steinway concert grand piano.
The inspiration for the concert was a quote by Felix Mendelssohn: “The essence of the beautiful is unity in variety.” The Mendelssohn Piano Trio will present Tyzen Hsiao’s “Formosa” Trio, a tribute to natural beauty of Taiwan; Beethoven’s Piano Trio Op. 70, No. 2; and Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in D Minor. The program is intended to showcase the expressive range and historical development of the piano trio.
Since its founding in 1997, the Mendelssohn Piano Trio has performed more than 500 concerts in the U.S., Europe and Asia. The group has also recorded 15 CDs, its most recent being a cycle of all of Haydn’s piano trios. The Mendelssohn Piano Trio’s repertoire of over 100 works embraces music from all periods of the genre’s history. The group’s performances and recordings can be heard on many classical radio programs, including NPR’s “Performance Today,” as well as WETA’s “Front Row Washington.”

A variety of methods are available for disposing of farm waste.

veterans
As the nation celebrates Women’s History Month in March, the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) reminds drivers that purchasing an Honoring Our Women Veterans License Plate both recognizes the importance of women who served and supports programs assisting woman veterans in Pennsylvania.
A portion of the cost of each plate goes directly to the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF). The VTF regularly issues grants to statewide charitable organi-

The Honoring Our Women Veterans license plates are available for passenger cars and trucks with a registered gross weight of not more than 14,000 pounds. To learn more about how to purchase plates and support the VTF, visit www.vtf.pa.gov or www.face book.com/padmva.
to naturally break down refuse into a safer, more usable form. Compost can be spread over fields and used to feed plants without the need to supplement much with chemical fertilizers.
Feeding livestock animals directly with kitchen leftovers is one way to cut down on waste. Pigs are good consumers of leftovers, as they are omnivorous animals that tend to eat anything. The United States Environmental Protection Agency urges anyone who wants to participate in recycling food waste for animal feed to contact a local solid waste public health agency or county agricultural extension agency for more information. This way, the food waste can be easily handled and safely controlled.
Cow and horse manure can be added to traditional compost piles, but swine and other omnivores’ waste may contain bacteria not suited to such composting. According to the resource ManureTo Fertilizer.com, pig manure stored in a cesspool needs to be pumped into a solid liquid separator to remove extra water. Solids can be mixed with straw or sawdust to adjust the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio and spread out in rows
to dry. Farmers also can look to products like MicrobeLift, which breaks down waste and reduces toxic gases to enhance manure management.
Waste from farms can be turned into other products. For example, corn cobs, bagasse, rice straw, and husks can be turned into silica, a nonmetallic element that is great for the skin, hair, nails, and bones. Fats from animals can be made into soaps, as
can cocoa pods.
Non-organic material, such as chemical waste, will need to be managed according to local regulations. Broken equipment can be taken to recycling facilities to ensure it does not end up in landfills.
Farm waste management is just another piece of any agricultural operation.

What consumers can do to support local farmers
Farming has never been a vocation for individuals looking for easy work. Farmers typically work long hours, braving the elements regardless of how unpleasant the weather may be.
The goal of all that hard work is to ensure individuals who live in rural, urban and suburban communities have constant, readily available access to healthy foods. Such devotion merits support, and there are many things consumers can do to show their appreciation for local farmers.
- Buy fresh foods at a local farmers market. Farmers markets are many foodies’ favorite places, but they aren’t exclusive to individuals
with a passion for food. Everyone needs to eat, so why not eat foods grown locally, which are generally more fresh and appetizing than imported fruits and vegetables sold at chain grocery stores? Even individuals who don’t typically eat fresh fruit and vegetables can find something delectable at a local farmers market, where anything from homemade tomato sauces to locally raised fresh beef and pork might be on sale.
- Order directly from local farms. Some farmers have embraced the e-commerce revolution and begun selling the foods they grow to consumers via their own websites. Research local farms
Did you know?
Farmers and growers face a significant threat in the years to come as industrial agriculture operations continue to expand. According to the National Resources Defense Council, industrial agriculture is the large-scale, intensive production of crops and animals. Such operations make it more difficult for small farmers and growers to turn a profit, and they often involve the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The use of such prod-
ucts poses an additional threat to small farmers and growers, as the Union of Concerned Scientists notes that the heavy application of fertilizers and pesticides accelerates soil erosion and increases pest problems.
Consumers concerned by the effects of industrial agriculture on the environment and on small farmers’ and growers’ ability to earn a good living can support efforts such as regenerative farming and organic farms.
Easter pie sale posted
Middletown Volunteer Fire Department, 10 Adelia St., Middletown, will hold an Easter pie sale. Pie selections are apple, peach, cherry, and shoofly. Pies will be available for pickup on Tuesday, April 4, from
and determine if it’s possible to buy directly from them. Farms may offer delivery or pickup, and consumers can enjoy fresh foods even more knowing that they helped farmers earn higher profits by buying directly from them.
- Check labels before buying items in local grocery stores. Packaging labels will indicate where fruits and vegetables came from. When possible, choose items produced by local farmers. These products may include fruits, vegetables, meat, or desserts like pies. Locally produced foods often taste more fresh than items sent from overseas or distant farms, and consumers will feel better knowing they helped to sup-
port local farmers.
- Spread the word. Get the word out after a satisfying experience with local farms and farmers. Whether it’s buying food from farms or taking advantage of family
days that let kids enjoy a day on the farm, sharing positive experiences via social media or word of mouth can be a great way to inspire neighbors to support local farmers as well.
Consumers can do much to support local farmers. In addition to feeling good about supporting their rural neighbors, consumers can also enjoy a meal featuring locally grown, fresh foods.

Krypton Cougars win district competition
The Krypton Cougars, a high school robotics team composed of students from the Hershey and Palmyra region, placed first at the 2023 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Mid-Atlantic District competition at Hatboro-Horsham High School in Horsham on March 4 and 5. During this FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) event, the Krypton Cougars - FRC Team 2539 - competed against other high school teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.
The team got off to a slow start in the first match after a
robotic arm failure, but the Cougars quickly turned things around to win 10 out of 12 of its qualifier matches, securing its place as the No. 1 alliance team captain. As No. 1 alliance captain, the team won the privilege of the first pick for the three-robot alliance, which subsequently competed against seven other threerobot alliances during the Sunday championship series. The Cougars’ alliance dominated the series, winning all of its playoff matches.
In the first match of the finals round, a “best two out of three” series, the Cougars’ alliance experienced its first
loss of the championship series. However, the team won the second match by a landslide and almost secured the world record score for this year’s competition. The final score of 163 to 108 was the third-highest score in the world. The third match of the finals series started poorly when two game pieces failed to score during the autonomous period of the game, the first 15 seconds, during which the robot functions fully on its own with no human intervention. The Cougars’ alliance quickly made up the lost points and dominated with a 153 to 142
Second-grader honored for good deed
A second-grader at Londonderry Elementary School was recently recognized by Lower Dauphin Communities That Care (LD CTC) and Hummelstown Police Department for doing the right thing.
Stefinn Slough was honored after he saw a younger student being unkind on the school bus and intervened. Stefinn talked with the student about the importance of being kind.
Stefinn was recognized in front of their classmates at lunch and rewarded with a gift card to Target; a Do the Right Thing T-shirt, pencil and certificate; and a Subway coupon. This month’s program sponsor was Hixon & Simko.
The Do the Right Thing program recognizes students in the Lower Dauphin community who have distinguished themselves through their accom-
plishments, attitude or outstanding efforts. For more information, contact LD CTC program director Angela Durantine at angela@ldctc.org.
Learning about one’s genealogy
Genealogy fascinates many people, who explore the subject for a variety of reasons, including learning about their ancestry. When looking into one’s genealogy, a person should keep several tips in mind.
Genealogy and family history are subtly different. Genealogy is a line of descent traced continuously from an ancestor, while family history is defined as the history or narrative of a family. They are intertwined but not synonymous.
Vital records are key. Genealogists explore vital records to obtain information about their ancestors. Vital records include documentation of ancestors’ life events, including births, deaths and marriages. Civil registration began at different times around the world, and even across North America, so it may be challenging, though possible, to develop an accurate history.
Surnames were not commonplace until around the 11th century in Europe, so surnames may be different. Surnames fall into four general categories: place or geographical features, such as Hill; nicknames or appearance, such as Little; occupation, for example, Baker; and father’s name, like Peterson. Some names may have been recorded incorrectly, so a person’s last name actually may be a derivative of the real name or it could be a misspelling. Some immigrants even changed their own surnames to fit in with the culture of the land they were immigrating to.
When searching for records of ancestors, people should also keep in miind that borders and municipalities can change over time. The Family Tree Factbook provides European maps from throughout
score.
Not only did the win give the Krypton Cougars its firstever Blue Banner as an alliance captain during an inseason event, but the team’s performance also gave it the 15th-highest offensive power ranking out of the approximately 1,000 currently ranked teams around the world. The team finished the weekend with a combined record of 15-3 plus the Excellence in Engineering award for its aesthetically pleasing, well-designed robot. The Krypton Cougars also gained enough ranking points to secure a spot in the 60-team
District Championship at Lehigh University from April
6 to 8.
The Krypton Cougars will continue to improve its robot at its build site at 30 E.
Granada Ave., Hershey, to prepare for its next competition. This event will take place at Springside Chestnut Hill from Friday to Sunday, March 17 to 19.
history and a timeline of European border changes, which may help with research.
In addition to uncovering mysteries of one’s heritage, dabbling in genealogy helps to preserve family history by confirming tales and tracing ancestors’ journeys. It also may help shed light on the history of artifacts or jewelry that ancestors owned and passed down.
One motivator behind genealogical research is to uncover relatives. Cousins from all over the world can discover they are related, which may be particularly important to those who were adopted and hope to understand more about where they came from for personal or health-related reasons.
Genealogy is a hobby enjoyed by many people. Through the internet and growing databases of civil records, people can seek to trace their family line.
