BarbaraScull, who has been a librarian at the Middletown Public Library for 25 years, will retire at the end of March.

“Barbara is our cataloger, our trainer, and our historian. She has been here for so long that she is the mortar holding the building in place. She is going to be difficult to replace,” said John Grayshaw, library director.

Scull grew up in Fairfax County, Va. Her parents were avid readers, and her father owned a printing business, beside which he built an addition to the town’s library.

Scull graduated from Earlham College in Richmond, Ind., with a degree in psychology and then attended Millersville University to obtain a master’s degree in special education. She worked in the special education field for 20 years before returning to school and earning a master’s degree in library science from Rutgers University.

When Scull first received her library degree, she thought she’d become a reference librarian. She was hired by the Middletown Public Library in September of 1997.

“I had no idea how long I’d stay,” she said with a laugh.

“At the time, I just needed a full-time job. But I just wore so many hats that it never got boring, so I stayed and then I stayed some more.”

Scull talked about some of her favorite responsibilities. “I really like collection development - taking chances on new See

Waters named National Merit finalist

Lower Dauphin High School senior Tobias Waters was recently named a National Merit finalist, bringing him one step closer to consideration for a National Merit Scholarship.

Toby is the son of Pam and David Waters. He is a fouryear member of the boys’ volleyball team and a three-year member of the French National Honor Society, the quiz bowl team and Student Council. He is a two-year member of the Science National Honor

Toby is a member of the chess club and Mini-THON, competing in the Mister MiniTHON pageant this year. He also plays club volleyball and participates in academic events, including Rubik’s Cube competitions.

In September, he was named a semifinalist in the National Merit program. Also earning recognition at that

authors and helping patrons find new books,” she said. “And I enjoy training staff and volunteers. The educator part of me is still there.” Scull noted that she has also enjoyed getting to know many people in Middletown. “Over the years I’ve come in contact with so many great patrons, staff, and volunteers - the list goes on and on,” she said.

The library was very different 25 years ago, Scull noted, adding that the internet has

been the biggest change. “When I was first here, all the students had to come in to get their information for school projects from books,” she said. “We used to get reference questions to settle bar bets. We were the internet before the internet.”

As one might expect, Scull’s hobbies include reading, especially biographies, mysteries, and off-beat books. “I like to read beyond the bestsellers,” Scull said. She added that she will miss her commute to work because she loves listening to audiobooks in the car. “I still have a CD player,” she noted.

Scull also enjoys playing the guitar and singing in her folk music group, Stone Soup, and she’s looking forward to having more time to putter in her yard. She’s a cat person and has always had one or two. She currently has one cat named Hobbes. “Hobbes will love having my undivided attention,” she said.

Scull said she is also excited about retiring because it

time were Lower Dauphin seniors Shannon Angerer, Audrey Meyers, Abigail Nissley and Abrianna Nissley, who are among the 34,000 students nationwide honored as Commended Students.

Semifinalists had to fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. Finalists who are selected to win a National Merit Scholarship will earn the Merit Scholar title; these announcements will be made between April and July.

means she will be able to travel more. “I’m going to Nova Scotia and Cape Breton in June,” she noted. “I travel with my sister, and we have great fun planning out our trips. The balloon festival in New Mexico is on my bucket list.” Scull said she wants to primarily travel to more places in the U.S. and Canada.

Scull said that, although she is sad to leave, she believes the library in good hands and will continue to meet the community’s needs for many years to come.

“Even as more people get electronic books, there will always still be a need for physical books as well,” she said.

Scull has lived in Lititz since 1974, but she noted that Middletown feels like a second home. “I feel like a part of Middletown. I feel invested when I do the history or genealogy research. It’s my adopted town,” she explained. And she plans to continue to research the history of the Middletown Public Library during her retirement. She noted, “I want to keep that connection alive.”

Event raises funds for American Heart Association

The American Heart Association welcomed close to 250 supporters to the Capital Region Heart Ball on Feb. 4 at the Hershey Lodge. The campaign, led by chair Jim Hoehn, regional president for PNC Bank in central Pennsylvania, raised more than $335,000 for the American Heart Association.

Tom Russell of CBS21 News hosted the dinner program, which recognized event sponsors and volunteers for their contributions to the American Heart Association and its work in the community.

One volunteer receiving special recognition was Christian C. Merritt III, vice president and investment and trust services regional manager at F&M Trust, who won the 2022 South Central PA Leaders of Impact campaign. Merritt raised $36,388 for the American Heart Association during the campaign period from Sept. 29 through Nov. 15, 2022. He ranked first among all Leaders of Impact nominees in Pennsylvania and 11th in the country. Merritt noted that he became involved to honor family members who have had cardiac events.

In addition to silent and live auctions, guests supported the cause through the Open Your Heart appeal led by open heart surgery survivor Kara Clouser of New Bloomfield. Clouser was preparing for the birth of

her second daughter when she ended up in the hospital fighting an infection that would eventually go septic and spread to her heart. Due to the advanced surgical procedures available locally, Clouser was able to avoid a highly invasive valve replacement procedure and opt for a valve repair surgery, which would likely produce longer lasting results and have a shorter recovery time. The surgery was a success and Clouser was able to get back on her feet within a few weeks of her surgery to run her photography business and finally hold her infant daughter for the first time.

Clouser’s surgeon, Dr. Mubashir Mumtaz from UPMC, was unable to attend the Heart Ball in person but sent a letter that was read by UPMC in Central PA president Lou Baverso.

The dollars raised by the Capital Region Heart Ball fund the mission of the American Heart Association to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives while working toward the association’s 2024 Health Equity Impact Goal of reducing barriers to health care access and quality.

Photos and event highlights can be found by searching for @AHAPennsylvania on Facebook, and more information is available at http://capital regionpaheartball.heart.org.

For more information about supporting the 2024 Capital Region Heart Ball campaign, which will be chaired by Baverso and celebrate the American Heart Association’s 100th anniversary, contact Kristie Davis at kristie.davis@heart.org or 717-730-1743.

OSJL celebrates Elizabethtown store’s grand opening

Ocean State Job Lot

(OSJL), a discount retail chain with stores across the Northeast, recently announced the opening of its 151st store in Elizabethtown in the former Kmart space in Market Street Square, located at 1605 S. Market St. The Elizabethtown store is OSJL’s eighth location in Pennsylvania and the second in Lancaster County. OSJL opened another new store in March in Shillington in a former Kmart space at 4000 Shillington Plaza.

OSJL’s Elizabethtown store occupies roughly 55,000 square feet of the nearly 95,000-square-foot space, which has been vacant since 2019, offering customers a new shopping experience, restoring vibrancy to the previously vacant retail location and creating new jobs in the community.

OSJL hosted a grand opening celebration and ribboncutting ceremony on March 11 at its new Elizabethtown store, with representatives from the brand, local dignitaries and officials and other VIPs in attendance, including Denise Grove, executive director, Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce; Marc Hershey, council president; Phil Clark, council vice president; council members Lanty Moss and Jay Hynicker; state Rep. Tom Jones; Dave Middleton, Elizabethtown store team leader; Elizabethtown Mayor Chuck Mummert; Paul Cox, OSJL director of store operations; and Vincent Ricci, OSJL store team leader.

Visitors enjoyed food trucks, free activities and giveaways.

Shoppers throughout New England, New York, New Jer-

sey and Pennsylvania may know OSJL for its Crazy Deals, Insider Club, and wide range of merchandise, including household goods; apparel; pet supplies; seasonal products such as lawn and garden essentials; patio, pool and beach supplies; heating and

Veterans’ program earns top rating

The Veterans Affairs’ (VA) National Cemetery Administration (NCA), which provides veterans and their families with burial benefits and memorial services, led all organizations, public or private, in the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) for 2022. NCA received a score of 97, the highest score ever achieved by any organization rated by the ACSI.

NCA’s score for 2022 is based on ACSI’s surveys of veterans and their families. This is the seventh consecutive time NCA has ranked first overall in customer satisfaction.

NCA provides burial and memorial benefits to eligible veterans, their spouses, and their dependents - at no cost to the family. This includes a gravesite in any of VA’s national cemeteries

with available space; opening and closing of the grave; perpetual care; a government headstone, marker, or medallion; a burial flag; and a Presidential Memorial Certificate. Some veterans may also be eligible for burial allowances.

Additionally, NCA manages the Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM) the nation’s first digital platform dedicated to the memory of more than 4.5 million veterans interred in VA’s national cemeteries and VA-funded state, territorial, and tribal veterans cemeteries. VLM allows family, friends, and others to preserve their veteran’s legacy by posting tributes, uploading images, and sharing their veteran’s achievements, biographical information, and historical documents.

Bocce team posts successful season

Lower Dauphin High School’s Unified Bocce team placed first in the Mid-Penn Conference’s North Division and second overall to Greencastle-Antrim High School at the league championships held at Lower Dauphin High School on Feb. 22.

The Falcons’ Unified Indoor Bocce team of Ethan Parker, Bryan Desmond, Sydney Laubach, Conner Roth, Morgan Sparks, Victoria Kutz, Taylor Korczynski and Avery Pollock advanced to the regional championships at Penn State Schuylkill. The top two teams from regionals were able to compete in the state championship games at the Giant Center in Hershey in March.

The squad is coached by special education teacher Monica Hockenbrock and physical education teacher Megan Etter. By providing opportunities for students both with all

types of disabilities and without disabilities to participate meaningfully in sports and by engaging other students in the school community, Special Olympics Interscholastic Unified Sports (IUS) seeks to promote inclusion, acceptance, and respect. The IUS program is supported by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) and the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Bureau of Special Education.

The Unified Indoor Bocce season occurs from December through February with the culminating events held in March. Teams practice a minimum of twice a week and participate in at least three competitions. A team consists of a proportional number of students with and without intellectual disabilities, and one team consists of six to eight athletes.

Gamut Theatre to stage “The Jungle Book”

Opening March 31, “The Jungle Book” will debut at Gamut Theatre for one weekend only. After the success of last year’s production of “Panchatantra Tales,”

Gamut’s Young Acting Company is looking forward to partnering again with Rasika School of Dance to present the classic story.

This play is being codirected by Gamut’s executive director Melissa Nicholson and Rasika’s founder and artistic director Rachita Menon Nambiar. The show is being performed by dancers and actors ages 7 to 18.

The play is set deep in the jungles of India, where an infant “man cub” is adopted by a pack of wolves and raised as their own. The

wolves name the child Mowgli. The boy grows under the watchful eyes of Bagheera the panther and Baloo the sloth bear, who must train the cub in the Laws of the Jungle. But not even their strict guidance can protect Mowgli from riotous monkeys, the vicious man-eating tiger Shere Khan and humans. The muchbeloved classic by Rudyard Kipling will show audiences the importance of family, respect for nature and what it means to be human.

Show dates and times are Friday, March 31, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, April 1, 2:30 and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, April 2, 2:30 p.m. To purchase tickets, visit www.gamut theatre.org/yac or call the box office at 717-238-4111.
