Hershey Rotary Club Dinner, Auction To Benefit Local Charities BY FRANCINE FULTON
he community is invited to join the Hershey Rotary Club for its 52nd annual fundraising dinner and auction on Saturday, April 9, at the Hershey Lodge, 325 University Drive, Hershey. All proceeds will benefit nonprofit organizations in the community. The event, which will be held in the Chocolate Ballroom, will begin at 5 p.m. with registration and a social hour featuring hors d’oeuvres and the opening of the silent auction. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by a live auction at 7:30 p.m. Silent auction items will include gift cards, a wine and cheese gift basket and a basket of Hershey historical memorabilia. “The Hershey Company donates several beautiful gift baskets of Hershey products,” noted Steven Ginter, co-chair of the 2022 fundraising committee. The winning bidders will be announced immediately following the live auction, which will be conducted by professional auctioneer Jay Ziegler, who volunteers his services for the evening.

Live auction items will include higher-ticket items. “A member has donated a long weekend at their lake house in Maine,” Ginter noted. “We have a one-hour (tour) by the Hershey Trolley company. A local flooring company has donated a Turkish rug. The Hershey Volunteer Fire Department donates a kid’s birthday party at the fire house.” Aso offered will be a one-hour private airplane tour of Dauphin and Lancaster counties. The Hershey Rotary Club annually presents grants to many local organizations, including the Hershey Food Bank, Ronald McDonald House, Mohler Senior Center, Hershey Volunteer Fire Department, Love INC, Hershey Area Playhouse, Cocoa Packs, Hershey Community Chorus, HersheyDerry Township Historical Society, Hershey Public Library, Hershey Symphony Orchestra and local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. The Hershey Rotary Club also supports youths through its Student of the Month program, Service Above Self Scholarships and International Youth Exchange program. A live auction will be featured during the Hershey Rotary Club’s annual fundraising dinner and auction on April 9.
Playhouse Geyers UMC Plans Easter Egg Hunt To Host Big Geyers United Methodist Church (UMC), 1605 S. Geyers Church Road, Middletown, will hold its annual Easter egg hunt Band Concert on Palm Sunday, April 10, at 2 p.m. The event is free and open The Unforgettable Big Band will perform at the Hershey Area Playhouse, 830 Cherry Drive, Hershey, on Friday and Saturday, April 1 and 2, at 7:30 p.m. The Unforgettable Big Band will bring back the jokes and the music of comic Bob Hope’s longtime house band, Les Brown and His Band of Renown, as well as Brown’s protégé Doris Day, whose 100th birthday is being commemorated this year. The music will celebrate the Greatest Generation and Hope’s decades of USO shows around the world.

In addition, all children will receive a prize bag of chocolate and toys. The Easter Bunny will be present, and parents are encouraged to have their cameras ready for photographs. After the egg hunt, all attendees may pick up a free to-go lunch. Each meal will include a hot dog, chips, dessert, and a drink. In the case of rain, the egg hunt will be a drive-through event where families can pick up eggs, candy, prizes and lunch from their cars. No preregistration is required. Lower Dauphin High School’s Chamber Singers vocal ensemble will perform at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) Conference on Friday, April 8. Being selected to perform at a state or national conference of music educators is one of the highest honors for a vocal ensemble, and this year’s performance will be the fourth for a Lower Dauphin High School choir group in the past decade, with others occurring in 2011, 2014 and 2017. The Chamber Singers is a select, auditioned group of vocalists under the direction of Elizabeth Colpo. The ensemble will perform works by Passereau, Debussy,

Madhankumar Earns Academic Honor Savita Madhankumar was named to the president’s list for the fall 2021 semester at Siena College, Loudonville, N.Y. Madhankumar is a resident of Hummelstown. To be named to the president’s list, a student must achieve a grade point average of 3.9 or higher.

Lionettes To Host Veteran Ed Fake of Hummelstown will speak at the Londonderry Lionettes meeting on Wednesday, April 6, at 1 p.m. at the Londonderry Firehouse, 2655 Foxianna Road, Middletown. During its January meeting, members of the Hershey Lions Club held its Citizenship and Patriotism event and recognized two first responders and an educator for their outstanding and dedicated service to the community during 2021. All three were nominated and voted upon by their peers. This gathering marked the 36th year that first responders were recognized and the 20th year that educators were recognized. The Hershey Volunteer Fire Company hosted the event. Among the honorees was firefighter Owen Zarefoss of the Hershey Volunteer Fire Company. Zarefoss began volunteering with the fire company at age 14 in the junior firefighter program. Chief Patrick Leonard commended Zarefoss for going above and beyond in his duties. Leonard also noted that both of Zarefoss’ parents were volunteers with the fire department. Zarefoss plans to join a fire department in South Carolina in a full-time capacity. Chief Garth Warner of the Derry Township Police Department introduced Officer Kevin M. Leiss as the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. Leiss utilizes his technology skills as a drone operator and during internet crime investigations involving child

Rotary Club Recognizes Students Lower Dauphin High School seniors Clara Breidenstine and Braden Landis were recently named Students of the Month for February by the Rotary Club of Hummelstown. Clara is the daughter of Susan and Bill Breidenstine. She is a co-founder and the president of the school’s Garden Club. She is three-year member of the German Language National Honor Society and the Volunteen Club, and she has served on a committee in Mini-THON for three years. Clara has participated in the spring musical for four years and has been a member of the cross-country team throughout high school. She is also a two-year member of the Science National Honor Society and the National Art Honor Society. In the community, she is active with the Manada Conservancy. She plans to attend college to major in plant biology. Braden is the son of Katie and Shawn Landis. He is a four-year member and captain of the football and boys’ basketball teams and a four-year member of the baseball team. He also serves as a counselor in Lower Dauphin’s Outdoor Education program. In the community, he has volunteered with the Hummelstown Hunger Run, and he volunteers with youth

Artwork by Reid Elementary first-grader Lily Bloss was recently featured on a T-shirt that was given to all of Middletown Area School District’s elementary counselors. After Reid’s school counselor, Anna Smith, had the idea to create the T-shirts, she happened to notice Lily’s artwork on display at the school. Lily had made the artwork for a school assignment in which she and her classmates had created paintings intended to look like stained glass windows. With Lily’s permission, Smith had the painting printed on a T-shirt, with a quote by Helen Keller on the back of the shirt. “I’ve been drawing
