Fun, adventure and service for Troop 97
Every year, Boy Scout Troop 97 participates in a winter Klondike Derby, packing a sled with equipment necessary to complete a series of stations that test their knowledge and skills of Scouting.
Despite the warm weather, the Keystone Capital District hosted an adventure-packed derby at Hidden Valley Scout Reservation in Loysville. Leadership and communication were required for the obstacle course.
“One Scout was able to see and had to guide his blindfolded patrol through an obstacle course of ropes and trees,” reported Star Scout Jordan Paul, noting that another station required the derby sleds to carry supplies necessary to build a fire and boil water in a two-quart metal pot. “These are timed events, so the faster your skills are, the more points your team earns,” he said.
According to Scoutmaster Bill Lee, 12 Scouts and three leaders

Manada Conservancy will present “For the Love of Groundcovers” on Thursday, April 11, at 7 p.m. in the conservatory at Hershey Gardens, 170 Hotel Road, Hershey.
Garden design is constantly evolving due to changing tastes and new botanical insights. Groundcovers are a critical component of garden ecology even though they are often overlooked for more showy species. They function as a green mulch to prevent weeds
and retain soil moisture, as well as to connect the whole garden together. In the presentation, Ian Gardner of Green Gardner Designs will share how to use native groundcovers to improve not only a garden, but also the local ecosystem.
Jes and Ian Gardner, with a little help from their young son, run a native and edible plant landscaping company. Ian started his career as an intern at Manada Conservancy and worked for several years as a

attended the Klondike Derby this year. “We entered two sleds and, despite the lack of snow, took fifth place in the overall derby competition,” he reported.
Other stations tested the Scouts’ knowledge of first aid and orienteering. “We wore goggles that were painted so we couldn’t see out of them and had to set up a two-man tent,” noted Tenderfoot Scout William Zakovitch.
According to Lee, the derby officials stated that the Scouts of Troop 97 excelled at this skill.
When asked what station he enjoyed the most, Zakovitch said, “Axe throwing!”
So far this year, Troop 97 has volunteered more than 350 community service hours to its sponsor, the Londonderry Fire Company No. 1, during its annual fish fry. Scouts served meals, kept drinks filled, bused tables and

Organist guild to offer free lessons
The Harrisburg Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) is offering free lessons this summer to fourth- through 12-graders, as well as college students. Piano students especially are invited to learn to play a different kind of keyboard instrument.
The chapter offers qualified applicants a limited number of scholarships for free instruction in organ playing, the equivalent of 10 weeks of half-hour lessons with professional organists in the Harrisburg area. At the end of each year’s lessons, the chapter invites the students to participate in a recital for their family, friends and other chapter members to enjoy.
The Shenk Scholarship is open to students entering grade four through those completing grade 12. This year, for the first time, several places are available for college students. The ability to read music is crucial, so having some experience with singing and/or playing an instrument, if not piano, is recommended.
The application deadline
is Tuesday, April 30. A short application form must be submitted, along with a recorded audition to be uploaded with the application. Visit www.harrisburg ago.org/education to find additional requirements and information about uploading an audition.
Recognizing the need to train new organists, the Harrisburg Chapter designated the Shenk Scholarship Fund. Established in 2002 by the late Melvin Shenk in memory of his mother, Violette Shenk, the scholarship encourages qualified young school students to study the organ and to develop the skills and commitment to serve as church organists.
The Harrisburg Chapter of the AGO has nearly 100 members who are people who love the organ (but do not necessarily play), are part-time or occasional church organists or are full-time musicians with advanced degrees. For more information on the chapter, visit www.harrisburg ago.org.
Historical society plans meeting
In belated celebration of the Hummelstown Area Historical Society’s 50th anniversary, society members Jean and Wade Seibert have written a book about the organization’s history. The historical society was formed in 1971 but was unable to celebrate its golden jubilee due to the pandemic.
Featured in the Seiberts’ book is information about programs, events, volunteers, accessions, fundraising and preservation efforts of the 1815 Parish House.
Wade will speak on some of the noteworthy activities throughout the last 50 years at the general meeting of the society on Monday, April 15, at 7 p.m. The gathering will take place in the
Parish House, located at the corner of Rosanna Street and North Alley in Hummelstown.
The talk will focus on the community during the 1960s and the foresight of certain residents, which led to the historical society’s formation. Also part of the discussion will be the founding of the society.
For 50 years, the society’s mission has focused on preservation, education and community outreach. Examples of these objectives will be presented at the upcoming meeting. The goal of the presentation is to honor the vision, commitment and work of past volunteers, as well as the energy and activities of current members.
Program to highlight Harry Houdini
“Houdini Returns,” presented by JW Entertainment, will be featured on Thursday, April 11, at 7 p.m. at the Historical Society of Dauphin County’s John Harris-Simon Cameron Mansion, 219 S. Front St., Harrisburg. Award-winning master magician Craig Diamond will host the 90-minute Harry Houdini experience program, which will feature more than 165 pictures from private collections. Diamond will also attempt Houdini’s straitjacket escape. The event will include a guided tour of the historic John Harris Mansion.
To purchase tickets, visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “Houdini Returns.” A link to purchase tickets can also be found at www.facebook .com/DauphinCounty History. Friends of the Society can receive a discounted price. Email office@dauphincounty history.org to receive the coupon code.

DMVA offers assistance with veterans benefits
The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) announced that its mobile veterans outreach vans are available throughout the state to assist veterans in obtaining information and initiating benefit claim paperwork through the assistance of DMVA accredited veteran service officers.
The DMVA brings essential services directly to veterans and can be booked online for community events such as fairs and festivals. The vans offer no-cost, on-site assistance with veterans benefits.
The DMVA also staffs outreach teams throughout Pennsylvania communities that build relationships with veteran advocates and connect veterans in need of specific services with those advocates.
Over the past year, outreach efforts supported 190 events - including 35 by scheduling an outreach van
- with nearly 4,000 veteran interactions. These teams also coordinate events with county directors of Veterans Affairs, veteran service organizations, and local and state officials to maximize awareness and attendance.
A wide range of federal, state, and county benefits are available to qualified veterans and their families. These benefits include service-connected disability compensation, pensions, Veterans Affairs health care benefits, burial benefits, education benefits, vocational rehabilitation, active service bonuses, and veterans homes long-term care. For more details on how to request a van for a community event, visit www .dmva.pa.gov/Veterans/ Miscellaneous/Pages/ MobileVeteransOutreach Vans.aspx. Information about DMVA by is also available at www.facebook .com/padmva or www .twitter.com/padmva.

Mount Calvary will perform “Hello, Dolly!”
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
What happens when a busybody matchmaker comes to town on a mission? In the case of “Hello, Dolly!” a lot of comedy, chaos and love.
Mount Calvary Christian School will present “Hello, Dolly!” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, through Saturday, April 13, with an additional performance at 2 p.m. on April 13. Performances will be held at the school, 629 N. Holly St., Elizabethtown.
“Dolly is very confident, bold and loud,” said Sophia
Bozell, a sophomore who plays the title character. “She’s always the loudest one in the room.”
When Dolly decides she wants to keep her latest match, Horace Vandergelder, for herself, her decision has a ripple effect that impacts several other residents of 1890s New York, where the show is set.
“The characters have to learn to go with the flow through everything,” said Malachi Shenk, a junior who portrays Cornelius Hackl, Horace’s employee. “Horace is thrown for a loop, and he
goes through a whole bunch of ups and downs, but he makes it through, and at the end, he’s happy and Dolly’s happy.”
Happiness and love are overall themes of the show, said senior Ava Fouse, who plays Irene Molloy. “It’s really a happy and uplifting show,” she stated.
“Hello, Dolly!” features a cast of 35 sixth- through 12th-graders, and the students have been working on the musical since December. It shows in the quality of the production numbers, said Jordan DeGroft, a junior who portrays Horace. “There are some really outstanding scenes, including ‘The Waiters’ Gallop,’” he commented. “That’s one to really look
forward to. You’ll see a bunch of featured dancers do a really hard dance.”
Even though the show is set in the 1800s and it’s been performed for decades, it will leave audiences with a timeless message, Malachi remarked.
“It goes to show you that in life there are ups and downs, and things might not always go your way,” he said. “Things might be a little crazy sometimes, but take a deep breath, and as long as you are intentional, as long as you stay calm, things will turn out.”
Tickets for “Hello, Dolly!” may be purchased at https:// mcchristianschool.home townticketing.com/embed/ all. Tickets will also be for sale at the door.
