Its purpose as an independent, public, charitable organization is to encourage community-wide participation and philanthropy to enhance and expand enrichment opportunities for all students in the district. It is the goal of the foundation to ensure long-range financial flexibility for schools within the district. The focus of the Falcon Foundation is to develop pathways by which stakeholders in the district’s community can make resources available to existing and future academic and extracurricular programs to meet the identified needs and interests of students.

Mastering the ice
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
On April 17, Red Rose Figure Skating Club began a spring session of classes in partnership with Learn To Skate USA. Classes will be held at Regency Ice Rink, 2155 Ambassador Drive, Lancaster, on Mondays until May 22, and summer sessions will be held in June and July. The club seeks to provide both adults and children age 3 and up with an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of ice skating.
We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.
Each session follows a curriculum provided by Learn to Skate USA, which offers a foundation for those looking to pursue figure skating and ice hockey. After working on basic techniques, coaches will help skaters to perfect more advanced skills such as onefoot glides, hops and turns.
“At the end of the day, skating is skating. Even if you’re a 6year-old wanting to become a hockey player, you have to learn to skate first,” said Cara Scudner of the Conestoga Valley area, a competitive skater at Red Rose.
Scudner and other seasoned skaters at Red Rose assist with the Learn to Skate program by serving as coaches during the classes. Although the program has been offered by the club in the past, this will be the first session that it has offered in over 10 years. Scudner said that she hopes the group classes offer a more accessible alternative to private lessons for aspiring skaters of any age. “It’s never too late to start ice skating,” Scudner said. “There’s nothing like it. Skating combines artistry with athleticism. You
feel like you’re flying when you’re gliding on the ice.”
In March, Scudner and fellow Red Rose skaters Brian Padgett of Lancaster and Ken Nguyen of Hershey competed in the Eastern and Midwestern Sectional Championships. At the championship competition in Kissimmee, Fla., Nguyen won first place and Padgett won second place. Both Nguyen and Padgett qualified to compete at the silver level in the national championship in Salt Lake City, Utah. Nguyen started skating as an adult through Learn to Skate USA and has regularly helped with the program and competed for the last 12 years. “Being an adult skater, I had more of a fondness to help other adults starting out and to nurture that enjoyment of the sport,” Nguyen said.
Nguyen said that he had been interested in skating for many years and loved to watch it on TV, but never took lessons when he was younger and instead focused on his studies. Once he graduated from college, he decided to fulfill his
dream of becoming a figure skater. Nguyen noted that one of his favorite aspects of the adult figure skating community is how supportive it is. “We understand as adult skaters that we don’t move like kids, but it’s an enjoyable sport and
you’re never too old to learn,” Nguyen said. “You also build relationships with coaches and other skaters. Even if you see them twice a year, you pick up right where you left off.” For more information, visit www.rrfsc.org/learn-to-skate.
The Hershey Civil War Roundtable will meet on Thursday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. at Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 542, 8000 Derry St., Harrisburg. The meeting will also be livestreamed via Zoom and Facebook Live, and a video will be posted at www.hershey cwrt.org later on.
Scott Hartwig will present “Buford and Reynolds Pick a Battlefield.” Hartwig will talk about the critical command decisions of Meade, Lee,
Buford, Reynolds, A. P. Hill and Henry Heth that led to the battle occurring at Gettysburg on July 1, and why in particular the decisions of Buford and Reynolds placed the Union Army of the Potomac in a favorable situation for the larger battle of July 2 and 3.
The meeting is free and open to the public. All persons interested in the history of the Civil War are invited to attend.

Graduation is a significant accomplishment, and many families commemorate students’ hard work with a party. With many graduation celebrations taking place, families may want to consider the following tips for planning ahead.
Families should begin by choosing a date. The dates of commencement ceremonies are typically announced months in advance, affording party planners ample time to pick a date for their celebration. However, families are advised to choose a date sooner rather than later, as waiting too long might result in plan-
ning the party on the same day as other families’ graduation celebrations. Once a date has been chosen, send out save-the-date notices so others can plan to attend.
Parents typically plan graduation parties, so one easy way to avoid scheduling conflicts is to speak with fellow mothers and fathers. A joint party might make sense if families are planning summer travel or have limited flexibility regarding when they can host.
It is important to book reservations early. Although many graduation parties are held at private homes, some families prefer large family
dinners at local restaurants or gatherings at other public venues. Families that are not hosting at home should study venue locations well in advance and book reservations as soon as possible. It is especially important to book reservations early because graduation season typically coincides with the beginning of wedding season, which means there could be steep competition for venues or limited availability.
Planners are encouraged to remain flexible. Even early birds may find it hard to book vendors and venues during peak graduation season, so they

should stay open to new ideas. One alternative is to schedule a graduation party in mid-summer. The event can serve as a sendoff to high school graduates about to leave for college or provide an opportunity for graduates to get together with friends before the end of summer. Another option could be to finance a trip for graduates and their friends to a nearby amusement park.
Graduation parties are a popular way to commemorate all the hard work students did en route to earning their diplomas. Planning early can help to ensure such parties are a success.

PennDOT to accept proposals
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Office of PublicPrivate Partnerships (P3) announced it will accept unsolicited proposals for transportation projects from the private sector through Sunday, April 30. The submission period applies to PennDOT-owned projects, infrastructure, and services.
During this period, members of the private sector can submit proposals offering innovative ways to deliver transportation projects across a variety of modes, including roads, bridges, railways, aviation, and ports. Proposals can also include more efficient models to manage existing transportation-related services and programs.
Unsolicited proposals will be accepted through 11:59 p.m. on April 30. Instructions on how to submit a project and information on the unsolicited proposal review process can be found by visiting www.penndot.pa.gov and looking for Public-Private Partnerships under Projects & Programs.
The private sector may also submit applications for non-PennDOT-owned assets directly to the P3 board during this time. Transportation entities outside of the governor’s jurisdiction, such as transit authorities and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, may establish their own timelines or accept proposals year-round.
The state’s P3 law allows PennDOT and other transportation authorities and commissions to partner with private companies to participate in delivering, maintaining, and financing transportation-related projects. As part of the P3 law, the sevenmember Public-Private Transportation Partnership Board was appointed to examine and approve potential public-private transportation projects. If the board determines a state operation would be more cost-effectively administered by a private company, the company will be authorized to submit a proposal and enter into a contract to either completely or partially take over that operation for a defined period of time.
The next unsolicited proposal acceptance period will occur in October. To learn more about P3 in Pennsylvania, including active projects, visit the aforementioned website.
Center to offer scholarships
For the second year in a row, Mountainside Treatment Center in Canaan, Conn., will provide $10,000 in academic scholarships to high school juniors and seniors. This year, Mountainside is expanding its reach to include students in Pennsylvania to increase accessibility and provide an opportunity for Pennsylvania natives to win this financial award.
The treatment provider has created the Mountainside Brighter Future College Scholarship to foster awareness and education about addiction among youths and empower students who have been impacted by substance use disorders to share their stories. Through providing academic scholarships, the treatment center hopes to reduce the stigma surrounding substance use disorders,
Ways to celebrate Earth Day
encourage youths not to be ashamed to share their struggles, and educate others on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.
Interested students will need to complete an initial application and then submit a short essay explaining how they have been impacted by their own or a loved one’s substance use disorder. The writing sample should also detail how the student’s personal experiences have shaped his or her understanding of addiction as a disease.
The deadline to apply for a scholarship is Monday, May 15, and winners will be announced on or around Monday, June 5. For more information about the scholarship and the essay guidelines, visit https://mountainside.com /scholarships/brighter-future.
Food Truck Fridays posted
Food Truck Fridays will return to the parking lot at Spring Creek Church of the Brethren, 335 E. Areba Ave., Hershey. The events will run from 5 to 8 p.m. on Fridays, April 28, May 26, June 23, July 28, and Aug. 25, rain or shine.
On April 28, a variety of food trucks will participate, including Keller BBQ,
Earth Day is an annual holiday that began in 1970, providing opportunities for people to celebrate the planet while learning about the many challenges it faces. Despite somewhat humble beginnings, Earth Day is now celebrated throughout much of the globe, and it will occur this year on Saturday, April 22. People can observe the holiday in a variety of ways that can be both enjoyable and educational.
In many places, winter weather is a distant memory by late April, making Earth Day a good time to travel by foot or bicycle instead of by car. Not only can these modes of transportation be fun, but they also do not cause the emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide
that result from traveling by car. A car-free Earth Day can serve as a catalyst for conversation about the effects of gas-powered vehicles on the health of the planet.
Environmental organizations are committed to the ideals behind Earth Day all year long. However, each Earth Day, many of these organizations sponsor ecoconscious efforts to help the planet and raise awareness of environmental issues. Volunteering with a local beach or park cleanup or signing up to walk and raise money for a local environmental charity is one way to spend Earth Day.
The National Forest Foundation (NFF) noted that planting trees can have a profound and positive impact on the planet. According to the
NFF, planting more trees helps forests to sequester carbon, which can have a significant effect on climate change. Even if people cannot work with a local forestry organization to plant more trees in a nearby forest, they may consider planting native trees on their own property.
Today’s adults likely will not be the ones who confront the more challenging consequences of climate change. Since that cost is likely to be passed on to future generations, adults are encouraged to involve children in their Earth Day efforts. Adults can explain the significance of these efforts in terms that kids can understand, emphasizing that the future of the planet could be in their hands.
April designated as Grange Month
The Pennsylvania State Grange has proclaimed April as Grange Month. The observance is an opportunity for the Grange, an agricultural advocacy and rural service fraternity, to showcase the work being done by its members across the state and the country.
Cheesy Grill, LettUsKnow, Cheesesteak Shuttle, and Funnel Cake Factory. In addition, ZooAmerica will share an animal presentation from 6 to 7 p.m. The prayer labyrinth on the church lawn will be open to visitors.
For event details, call 717533-7192 or visit www.face book.com/SpringCreekCoB.
Voices of the Valley to sing
Voices of the Valley will present a concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, in the sanctuary at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey. The concert is part of the church’s 2023 Arts Alive! cultural series.
Voices of the Valley, which is in its 45th concert season,
will present works by Aaron Copland, Moses Hogan, Ysaye Barnwell, Cyndi Lauper, Andre J. Thomas, Eric Whitacre, and others.
A freewill offering will be received. For more information, call the church office at 717-533-9667 or visit www.derrypres.org.
Park to host Wildflower Walk
The Governor Dick Environmental Center, located at 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will present a Wildflower Walk on Saturday, April 22, at 1:30 p.m. Attendees will learn about the early spring bloomers of the forest.
The program is free, but preregistration is required. For more information and to register, email governordick@ hotmail.com or call 717-9643808. Those who register will be notified in the event that the program is canceled.
Since the Pennsylvania State Grange was established in 1873, it has emphasized
the importance of service to the community. To celebrate its 150th anniversary, the Pennsylvania State Grange has asked local Granges across the state to carry out special activities and acts of community service.
Every Grange member is an advocate, and local meetings across Pennsylvania provide a forum to discuss opportunities to overcome numerous chal-
lenges. Topics of interest to Grange members include rural broadband; public notices and ensuring transparency; rural health care options; and the loss of prime farmland.
The Pennsylvania State Grange invites Pennsylvanians to join this organization supporting Pennsylvania’s agricultural community and beyond. To learn more, visit www.pagrange.org.

Motorcycle safety courses posted
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) reminds residents that free Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program (PAMSP) training opportunities are available to motorcycle riders across the state. Prospective, experienced, and new riders who have a motorcycle learner’s permit or motorcycle license can develop and refresh operator proficiency through the trainings.
PennDOT’s third-party training providers offer many classes. A full list of providers and their locations can be found by visiting www.dmv.pa.gov and looking under Driver Services for Motorcyclists and then Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program.
Successful completion of a basic or intermediate course waives the requirement to take a skills test at a PennDOT Driver License Center for those over age 18 and automatically earns the permit holder a motorcycle license. Motorcycle permit holders who complete a three-wheel basic course will earn a motorcycle license with a restriction prohibiting the operation of a two-wheel motorcycle.
Classes can be scheduled at locations throughout Pennsylvania, and class schedules are coordinated by each thirdparty training provider at each location. Individuals interested in training should contact the training providers directly or check their websites for class availability, as additional courses may be offered, and providers may offer additional walk-in or waitlist opportunities.
The 16-hour Basic Riding Course (BRC), which consists of in-class or virtual instruction and practical riding, provides training for new riders and gives experienced riders the opportunity to polish their skills and correct any unsafe riding habits they may have developed. Students are
responsible for providing all protective gear. Act 84 of 2012 established the requirement that all permit holders under age 18 must successfully complete the BRC to receive a motorcycle license.
The eight-hour Intermediate Riding Course allows skilled riders to refresh their safety knowledge and hone their onroad skills. Students taking this clinic must provide their own motorcycle and protective gear and provide proof of insurance, current registration, and inspection for their motorcycle.
During the 3-Wheel Riding Course, riders learn the same skills and safety strategies taught in the BRC, except on a three-wheeled motorcycle. The clinic consists of classroom instruction and riding exercises. The majority of students must provide their own motorcycle and all of their own protective gear and provide proof of insurance, current registration, and inspection for their motorcycle. However, select locations offering the course have three-wheeled motorcycles on hand for student use. Individuals should check with the location before signing up for a course.
The Advanced Riding Course, a one-day clinic for experienced riders who want to enhance their safety skills through attitude and awareness, rounds out the PAMSP offerings. The clinic is designed to enhance a rider’s ability to avoid a crash by honing his or her decision-making abilities, riding strategies, risk management, and rider behavior and choices. Students taking this clinic must provide their own motorcycle and protective gear and provide proof of insurance, current registration, and inspection for their motorcycle.
Classes and locations will continue to be added throughout the riding season. Registration for the 2023 training season is ongoing.

Organization plans bingo event, seeks assistance
Big Hug Inc. will host its inaugural Pocketbook Bingo fundraiser at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 521 E. Orange St., Lancaster, on Saturday, April 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Doors will open at 10 a.m. The event will include 10 games of bingo, two special games and giveaway drawings. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
Space is limited to 200 bingo players. Tickets will be discounted when purchased in advance and full price at the door. To purchase tickets and for more details, visit www.bighuginc.org or search for “Big Hug Inc.” Information is also available by calling 717-299-5599. The proceeds from this event will go to feeding people throughout
central Pennsylvania over the coming months.
Big Hug Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization that works to feed those who are homeless and hungry throughout Lancaster, York, Berks, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. The organization was started in late 2021 by Linda Than.
When Than was a little girl in Vietnam, she and her family would gather around the dinner table to share meals and stories of their day. Than came to the United States just over three decades ago, initially living in Washington, D.C., for a few months before moving with her family to Lancaster. During her time in the nation’s capital, Than saw many people who were homeless, and she felt a need to help. Big Hug Inc. is based on
Than’s joy for cooking and caring for others, interests that came from her late mother.
Since Big Hug’s founding, Than has organized a five-person board of directors, which includes the Rev. Louis Butcher, former pastor of Bright Side Baptist Church. The board meets monthly and supports Than in her efforts to feed those in need.
Big Hug is seeking assistance from local churches and community organizations that have commercial kitchens and gathering space where Big Hug volunteers may prepare and serve meals on weekend days. Currently, two or three facilities per county are needed for this purpose. Thus far, Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia has invited Big Hug
to provide its services one Sunday in June and another in August. Volunteers and financial contributions are sought, as well.
Big Hug has set a goal to feed more than 2,500 people before the end of 2024. Than also hopes to one day have a food truck that will allow her to take her mission into the streets, directly to people in need.
