CJROTC team competes at event

adets from Lower Dauphin High School’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) competed in the Raider Challenge on April 20 at Shippensburg University, finishing seventh overall.

The event is a physically and mentally demanding competition bringing together JROTC programs from across southcentral Pennsylvania. It comprises the Army physical fitness testconsisting of push-ups, sit-ups, and a 2-mile run - along with a land navigation course, the one-rope bridge construction and traverse, a first aid and litter carry event, and a 3-kilometer team run.

The Lower Dauphin JROTC squad placed third in the 2-mile run, fourth in the first aid and stretcher carry event and the land navigation event, and fifth in the rope bridge event.

“We really did perform well in some categories,” said retired Col. Chad Goyette, the senior instructor in the Lower Dauphin JROTC

program. “The cadets will see this and use it as fuel for next year. We now have a start position from which to work and a clear goal for the future.”

The seniors who participated in the event were Cadet Lt. Col.

Alek McGlaughlin, Cadet Maj. Ryder Stahl, and Cadet Sgt. 1st Class Lusvin Lopez-Murcia. Juniors taking part were Cadet

2nd Lt. Aaron Espenshade, Cadet Sgt. 1st Class Liam Samples, and Cadet Pfc. Kolton Lyons. Sophomores Avery Troain, cadet captain, and Caleb Espenshade, cadet sergeant, also represented Lower Dauphin, as well as freshmen Seth Whitmoyer, Ayden Verbos, and Blake Plecker-Werner, who all have the rank cadet private first class, and Tyler Morris, cadet private.

Pop-Up Shop will benefit Hope Within Ministries Volunteers sought at Hershey pollinator habitat

A season kickoff work event will be held on Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Conservation Area along Cocoa Avenue in Hershey. Volunteers are welcome to participate in this event and similar events every other Saturday throughout the summer.

Work this year will include preparing and planting four new plots with nectar plants, laying woodchips on the paths, and refurbishing the older plots. For the kickoff event, volunteers

For several years, Hope Within Ministries Community Health, Counseling & Dental Center has held a fundraising holiday shop during the Christmas season.

“While we rely on our 40-plus volunteer licensed medical and dental professionals to provide care to our patients, we needed to look at additional ways to provide financial support for our operations throughout the year,” said Anne Marie McAlester, executive director. “Our holiday shop

is always well-received, so we looked at having events throughout the year - spring, summer, fall and Christmas.”

The organization’s Spring Pop-Up Shop will be held on Friday, May 3, from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the annex on the clinic’s property, 4748 E. Harrisburg Pike, Elizabethtown.

Hershey Artfest announced

The Hershey Artfest will take place on Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the grounds of the Englewood Entertainment Venue & Brewery, 1215 Research Blvd., Hummelstown.

Artfest will feature more than 100 vendors, including artists, artisans, and authors. Artists will share works in a variety of mediums, including photography, jewelry, fine art, ceramics, metal work, woodworking, mixed media, and textiles.

Scouts plan information night

Cub Scout Pack 97 in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County, will hold an information night on Thursday, May 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the social hall at the Londonderry Fire Company, 2655 Foxianna Road, Middletown. The event will include games and crafts for youths and an information session for parents. Scout leaders will be present to answer questions,

School plans May Fair

The Londonderry Elementary School May Fair will be held at 260 Schoolhouse Road, Middletown, on Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. rain or shine. The event will be presented by the school’s PTO.

Activities will include children’s carnival games and prizes, an inflatable

obstacle course and bounce house, a dunk tank, a petting zoo, sand art, and face painting. The Londonderry Fire Company, the Londonderry Boy Scout troop and the Lower Dauphin Bookmobile will be represented. Refreshments will be available from St. Pete’s Fryers and Mister Softee. There will be a silent auc-

Tips to avoid the buildup of clutter

Clutter has a way of taking over a home. As time goes by, items that are not stored or discarded when they have lost their utility can gradually take over a space, creating a claustrophobic, cluttered feeling that can affect how people feel in their homes.

Clutter is not something to be taken lightly. A 2010 study published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin found that women who characterized their living spaces as cluttered or marked by unfinished projects were more likely to experience fatigue and depression than women who described their homes as restful and restorative. Although clutter is often discussed in terms of removing it, there are also ways to prevent it in the first place.

- Schedule weekly cleaning sessions. Cleaning is a chore few look forward to, and that reluctance may be a byproduct of infrequent cleanings. The less a home is cleaned, the longer cleaning sessions take when individuals get around to it. Weekly cleaning sessions can help prevent items from piling up and creating a cluttered look.

- Discard items when they are no longer used, as holding on to these items will eventually contribute to the buildup of clutter. That is a lesson parents know well, as kids outgrow toys, they can then pile up and contribute to overcrowded toy chests and play rooms. Adults also have a hard time discarding their own toys, including old devices. As kids outgrow toys, let them choose which ones to discard before they are replaced with new items. The same goes for adults, who can delete their data from old devices like tablets, smartphones and laptops and discard them once replacements have been purchased.

- Make it easy to find stored items. When revamping storage systems, people may consider clear, stackable drawers. Storage containers that are not transparent should be labeled so it’s easier to identify what’s inside.

- Donate clothing. Just as toys and electronic devices should be discarded when they are no longer used, old clothes can be donated to create more storage space and prevent the buildup of clutter. Clutter is often described as something visible to the naked eye, but clutter can also build up in

LDHS students perform at music festivals

Students from Lower Dauphin High School (LDHS) were recently selected to perform at events presented by the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA).

Sophomore Mia Pegher performed the PMEA Central Region Orchestra Festival held March 21 through 23. Mia, who plays the oboe, earned her spot at the festival after successfully auditioning at the District 7 festival earlier in the year. The 15-county festival was held at Central York High School under the baton of Hannah Schendel, who studied at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music under the mentorship of Mark Gibson. Schendel recently completed coursework for the Doctor of Musical Arts in orchestral conducting.

According to PMEA, Modern Band is a schoolbased music program that utilizes popular/commercial music as its central canon. Modern Band teaches students to perform the music they are familiar with while also teaching composition and improvisation skills. Styles that are studied include rock, pop, reggae, hip-hop, rhythm and blues, electronic dance music and other contemporary styles as they emerge. Modern Band also utilizes musical instruments that are common to these genres, such as guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, voice, technology and ukulele.

The PA Student Teacher Support Program is designed to address the financial strain caused by student teaching requirements, incentivize completion at local education agencies and non-public schools that struggle to attract educators, reduce teacher shortages in Pennsylvania, and incentivize cooperating teacher participation. Student teachers may face financial challenges, as they often forgo income while incurring additional expenses such as transportation and professional attire.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro signed into law Act 33 of 2023, establishing the $10 million PA Student Teacher Support Program, which provides $10,000 to eligible student teachers. There is an option to receive an additional $5,000 for student teachers in high-need areas. The

PHEAA is administrating the program for the commonwealth. The application, along with additional program information, can be found at the aforementioned website.

Pennsylvania student teachers who will be student teachers in the fall and spring semesters of the 2024-25 academic year are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Eligible student teachers will need to download or print the PDF application located at the previously mentioned website. Completed applications can be submitted via the PHEAA Account Access Portal, email, or fax. Funds will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis per term basis.

Amputee and paralyzed veterans may be eligible for pension

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) invites eligible veterans to apply for a monthly pension through the state’s Amputee and Paralyzed Veterans Pension program. The DMVA is helping to raise awareness as the Amputee Coalition recognizes National Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month in April.

To qualify for the pension, applicants must have been a resident of Pennsylvania upon entering the military, have received honorable or under honorable conditions discharge, and have a service-connected disability rating of 40% or higher in each of two or more limbs (arms/ hands or legs/feet) as determined by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Currently,

more than 2,300 veterans across the commonwealth are enrolled in the program.

Marimba ensemble to perform at Derry Church

Led by percussionist Bob Nowak, the six-member Anthracite Marimba will perform at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, in the sanctuary at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey. The concert will include “Bolero,” selections from “Carmen,” the march from “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Joplin Rag Medley.” Nowak has played the

timpani on occasion for Sunday worship at Derry Church, and for the past 20 years it has been an annual tradition to welcome his marimba ensemble in Sunday morning worship. In addition to Nowak, the members of Anthracite Marimba are Cody Gemmel of Bethlehem; Travis Hicks of Newport, Tenn.; Corrine Houtz and James Weist

Indiantown Gap National Cemetery to expand

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Indiantown Gap National Cemetery announced it is developing additional acres to meet the growing needs of veterans and their families in southcentral Pennsylvania. Upon completion of the construction project, it is projected that the veteran community will be provided additional burial space lasting into the year 2038.

Groundbreaking for the phase five expansion of the cemetery was scheduled to take place in March. The three-year-long project will consist of the development of 27 acres for approximately

15,700 gravesites for casketed and cremated remains. These sites will include 5,330 preplaced crypts; 598 traditional casket sites; 4,020 in-ground cremation sites; and a 6,000-niche columbarium. The $38.6 million expansion will also include construction of a new honor guard building.

The 677-acre Indiantown Gap National Cemetery was established as a national cemetery in 1976 with the first burial taking place in 1982. Currently, the cemetery has 221 developed acres and is the final resting place of more than 65,000 veterans and family members.

Veterans Affairs’ National Cemetery Administration (NCA) - which provides veterans and their families with burial benefits and memorial services - led all organizations, public or private, in the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) for 2022. NCA received a score of 97, the highest score ever achieved by any organization rated by the ACSI. This was the seventh consecutive time NCA has ranked first overall in customer satisfaction.
