Runners take off at a previous year’s Hummelstown Hunger Run/Walk.

Hunger Run/Walk To Benefit Hummelstown Food Pantry BY FRANCINE FULTON

he seventh annual Hummelstown Hunger Run/Walk, featuring a 5K run and walk and a 5-mile run, is scheduled for Saturday, May 14, at Schaffner Park, located at the corner of Poplar Avenue and Water Street in Hummelstown. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Hummelstown Food Pantry. The 5-mile run was added to the event for the first time in 2021 and proved to be popular for runners. “We had a good turnout for the 5-mile run, and we got some new participants because of that, so we are keeping that again this year,” said Jill Osevala, who runs the event along with her husband, BJ. Race-day registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. The 5K and 5-mile runs will begin at 10 a.m. and will

Those who take part in the 5K and 5-mile events will primarily follow the same course, but the 5-mile runners will divert off the main course for the additional distance. Volunteer fire police from Hummelstown Fire Company will be on hand to guide participants at the major intersections along the race course. Spectators are also welcome to cheer on the participants. Runners, walkers and volunteers who bring a nonperishable food item for the pantry will be entered into a random drawing for one of many gift certificates provided by local sponsors. “We have over $2,300 worth of prizes already for our drawing,” Jill noted. Prizes will include gift cards to local restaurants, a gift bag from AAA Central Penn with a one-year membership and two certificates for a one-night stay at

the Holiday Inn Express Hershey (Harrisburg Area). “Last year, we raised $30,000,” Jill reported, noting that the event has generated more than $123,000 for the Hummelstown Food Pantry since its inception in 2015. “My husband and I created this to raise money for the pantry,” Jill noted. “It has grown in numbers each year. The first year we had less than 150 people. In 2021, we had 270 participants.” For more information and to register or to sign up for a volunteer spot, visit www.htownhungerrun .wixsite.com/hummelstown5k. Registrants and volunteers will receive a gift bag. Chick’s Tavern and Rubber Soul Brewing Co. will provide free lunch, which will include pulled pork sandwiches, chips and a cookie, and Sweet Dawgs Soft Serve Frozen Desserts will hand out frozen yogurt to participants and volunteers.

The Susquehanna Chorale will continue its 40th anniversary legacy season in May with two live performances of the group’s spring program, titled “A Celebration in Song.” Performances will take place on Friday, May 13, at 8 p.m. at the Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey, and Sunday, May 15, at 4 p.m. at the High Center, Messiah University, 1 College Ave., Grantham. Audience members will be invited to a reception following each performance. “Celebrate with us as we commemorate our legacy: 40 years of enriching lives through song,” said artistic director and conductor Linda Tedford. “Experience our joy as we come together with renewed excitement for singing to an audience in live performance.”

The Susquehanna Chorale is a nationally acclaimed adult chamber ensemble of 37 auditioned singers. It was founded by Tedford in 1981. The May concerts will feature songs from the chorale’s repertoire over its four decades, including sacred motets, early American hymns, love songs, and African American spirituals. Selections will include Schubert’s “Holy, Holy, Holy,” Bruckner’s “Locus Iste,” Philip Stopford’s “Do Not Be Afraid,” the early American folk hymns “Down to the River to Pray” and “No Time,” and “Java Jive,” made famous by Manhattan Transfer. The concert will conclude with Rollo Dilworth’s “Shine the Heavenly Light” and a performance of “Shenandoah” wherein the Susquehanna Chorale will be joined

by several alumni. Tickets for both concerts may be purchased through the Messiah University Box Office at 717-691-6036. The Susquehanna Chorale is a recipient of Chorus America’s highest honor, the Margaret Hillis Achievement Award for Choral Excellence. Tedford was honored by the American Choral Directors Association of Pennsylvania with the Elaine Brown Award for lifelong commitment to excellence and leadership in the choral art. In 2013, she received Theatre Harrisburg’s Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts in the capital region. The chorale is funded in part by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Lower Dauphin High School musicians Thomas Sutor and Spencer Sweigart participated in the first Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 7 Select Modern Band Festival on April 1 and 2 at Spring Grove High School. Students from across the eight-county District 7 auditioned to join the band. The ensemble’s setlist included songs from Santana, Paramore, and the Allman Brothers, as well as two original songs written by the students themselves during the festival. They were directed by Bryan Powell, assistant professor of music education and

He was scheduled to perform in the PMEA festival on April 8 under the direction of Amelia Garbisch, director of music education and assistant professor of choral music at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. Aden is the son of Melissa and Kenneth Weigle. He has been a member of the Chamber Singers for three years as a bass 2 and is the section leader for the basses this year. See Students pg 9

The Dauphin County Medical Society Alliance (DCMSA) will welcome Alicia Richards as the keynote speaker at its Spring Luncheon on Thursday, May 19, at 11 a.m. at the West Shore Country Club, 100 Brentwater Road, Camp Hill. DCMSA sponsors this event in support of its community health and education projects for the coming year. Richards, a local news coanchor, is a longtime supporter of DCMSA as master of ceremonies for previous fundraisers. DCMSA chose to feature Richards this year because of her longtime support of health projects and news coverage related to many health-related issues. Funds raised at this event will benefit the health and education projects and programs that DCMSA operates for the central Pennsylvania area. These efforts include funding for local medical clinics that serve the underserved, such as Beacon Clinic and Community Check-Up Center; local food pantries and organizations that provide nutrition assistance, like the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, the International Service Center, and the Latino-HispanicAmerican Cultural Center; and groups that provide services to children, such as PSH-SCOPE and Lower Dauphin Communities That Care. DCMSA also funds a medical student scholarship each year. ESTEEM (Penn State Health Cosmetic Associates), the Premier sponsor of the event, will provide gifts for all participants. Mountz Jewelers will display its latest styles and has provided a 14-karat yellow gold, 1/2 carat total weight diamond bar necklace

Both contests are free and open to Pennsylvania students, including those in public, private, charter, cyber-charter, or home school. The deadline for entries is Friday, May 6. The coloring contest is open to students ages 5 to 11 and will give young students the opportunity to create their own judge. The essay contest is open to all students in grades three through 12, with essays being judged on creativity, overall quality, and adherence to the questions. COMMUNITYCOURIER - Greater Hershey Area - May 4, 2022 - 9

Hershey Library Posts Events Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Ave., Hershey, will offer three special events to the community. All programs are free and will be held in person. SPLAT Studio will visit on Saturday, May 7, from 2 to 3:45 p.m. for a library tradition. Young children can join the artists from SPLAT Studio to make a Mother’s Day surprise for a special woman in their lives. Children will be split into two groups: those ages 2 to 6 and those age 6 and older. a history lecturer, tour guide, and re-enactor. Discover the Wonderful World of Islamic Art with John Maietta will be offered from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 14. Participants will explore sacred calligraphy, oriental carpets, the glittering domes of the Taj Mahal, and the details of Persian court painting that express the beauty and diversity of Islamic art and architecture. Attendees will also learn about the form and function of art from the perspective of the anonymous craftsmen of the Islamic world. Registration is required by visiting the Events Calendar at www.hersheylibrary.org or calling the library at 717533-6555.
