gymnastics. “After I broke my collarbone bouncing off the couch, they figured gymnastics could be a way for me to tumble and flip safely. Now, I am attracted to the sport because I am set on trying to reach the potential of my abilities.”
Alexander recently demonstrated his gymnastics talents by winning the gold medal on the parallel bars for the third time in his career at the USA Gymnastics Region 7 Championships held from April 4 to 7 in Landover, Md. The top gymnasts from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia competed at the event.

USA Gymnastics as Academic-All Americans. They, and other members of the Artistic Sports Academy Plus (ASAP), located in Harrisburg, qualified to compete in the USA Gymnastics Men’s Development Program National Championships to be held from Thursday, May 9, through Sunday, May 12, in Daytona Beach.
While competing, Alexander said he focuses on his routine. “While I am competing, what’s happening with the crowd becomes very faint to me. I am aware if there is a loud cheer after I perform a difficult skill, but the majority of the time it’s just silence to me,” he shared. “I’m too focused on my skill work and technique to care what is happening around me. Once I land my dismount, all the noise comes back suddenly and returns to normal.”
“My dad once told me that (the audience members) all came to see and support me. In the end, it’s my job to give them a show, which I know I am capable of,” Mason added.
At regionals, the athletes competed in six disciplines: floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars and the horizontal bar. “For each event, you compete once; it’s just like the Olympics,” explained Alexander’s father, Jason Petula, vice president of ASAP Men’s Gymnastics Booster Club. “So you could do well on the individual event, and you could also do well in the overall, which is six events.”
Jason noted that at nationals there will be four rounds of competition. “Alex made the national team, so he has to compete Thursday night because he is representing the region. Regions around the country will compete for the team cup,” he explained. “You have to qualify for the championship round on Sunday. That’s your shot at winning the national championship. That’s where the college coaches will be scouting.”
Both young men began gymnastics at the young age of 5. “I was always full of energy and enthusiasm. (Gymnastics) was a great fit from a young age and translated into my success later on,” Mason stated. “I have been inspired by collegiate athletes and also Olympic athletes, too.”
Both athletes have sustained injuries such as sprained wrists, contusions and broken bones, but they maintain their passion for the sport and a rigorous practice schedule of 18 hours per week.
When asked what the most challenging aspect of
the sport is, Alex replied, “With gymnastics, it is very easy to encounter periods where it feels no progress is being made. Whether it be not understanding how to properly perform a skill, facing a mental block that is difficult to overcome or feeling constantly exhausted from the excessive training, this sport can be trying at times.”
“Personally, the hardest part of the sport is the mental aspect. Aside from staying healthy, the mental aspect holds me back the most if I allow it to,” Mason added. “That is mostly prevented from happening because of my great team and coaches by my side every day. For example, I may truly have all of the time and repetitions in the gym, but once I raise my

hand to the judge before I begin my routine, that part of me is still slightly nervous.”
After graduation, Alex plans to enroll in Schreyer Honors College at Penn State this fall to study mathematics, with a goal of becoming a professor. He also plans to look into being a part of Penn State’s gymnastics club team. Mason is also looking at colleges and hopes to make the gymnastics team. “I plan to continue this sport as long as I possibly can. This sport has led me to great heights, and I will put my best foot forward to keep that momentum going,” he said. “My family, coaches and teammates are the people pushing me to become better than before.”
The event will open with registration and breakfast at 7 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The per-person fee includes a continental breakfast, green fees and the use of a cart with complimentary bag service, a light lunch, an awards banquet and buffet and a variety of contests and prizes, inclining a hole-inone contest.
Registration is open now through Friday, May 17. For more information on registration, sponsorship opportunities or how to support the event, visit www.vista autismservices.org/golf.

Speaker to share about President Garfield
The Harrisburg Civil War Round Table will celebrate its 65th anniversary on Friday, May 17, at the Central Penn College Conference Center, 600 Valley Road, Enola. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a buffet dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Anyone wishing to attend the lecture only should arrive by 7 p.m. This lecture will not be broadcast via Zoom.
C.W. Goodyear will explore the Civil War military service of Maj. Gen. James A. Garfield, who went on to serve in Congress and become the 20th president of the United States. In his biography “President Garfield: From Radical to Unifier,” Goodyear charts the life and times of Garfield, who was a progressive firebrand and conservative compromiser, a Union war hero, the founder of the first Department of Education, a Supreme Court attorney, an abolitionist preacher, a mathematician, a canal man, an election-fixer and a clean-government champion, a gentleman farmer, the last president to be born in a log cabin, and the second president to be assassinated. Over nearly two decades in Congress during a polarized era - Reconstruction and the Gilded Age - Garfield served as a peacemaker in a nation and Republican Party defined by divisions. He was elected president to overcome them, and he was killed while trying to do so.
C.W. Goodyear
Goodyear is an author and historian based in Washington, D.C. He was born in New Orleans and grew up abroad before graduating from Yale University. He has been featured on the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History’s “Book Breaks” program with Gina Oppenheim; at the Midtown Scholar bookstore with National Civil War Museum CEO Jeffrey Nichols; at the Politics & Prose bookstore in Washington, D.C., with retired Gen. Stanley McCrystal; and on PBS with Christiane Amanpour.
The program is open to the public. The lecture is free, and there is a fee for the dinner, payable at the door. To make reservations for the dinner by noon on Monday, May 13, contact Brian Foster at hcwrt.mem bership@gmail.com or 717962-6122 or visit https:// harrisburgcwrt.org. For more information, contact programs chair Stephen Smith at 717-433-0209.

Spring road safety urged
Pennsylvania farmers are returning to their fields for spring planting, which means that drivers should be alert for large farm equipment on rural roadways.
As part of Rural Roads Safety Week, April 14 to 20, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and its partners in the state government encouraged motorists to be cautious on roadways. Each year, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau partners with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and Pennsylvania State Police to spread the message of staying safe on rural roads during the height of the spring planting season.
Farm equipment can legally be operated on roadways, including at night, but farmers are required to follow certain safety guidelines depending on the size of equipment moved. All farm equipment that travels at speeds less than 25 miles per hour is required to have a slow-moving vehicle emblem - an orange triangle with red outline - on the back of the equipment.
If drivers see the slow-moving vehicle emblem, they should slow
down immediately. Drivers should be alert that farm equipment may be turning at an unexpected place, such as into a field, and may be making a wide left turn if it pulls to the right. Drivers should always be sure the oncoming lane is clear and visible before passing large equipment, and they should never pass in a no-passing zone or within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevated structure, or tunnel. Drivers are also reminded to be patient, wear a seat belt, and not drive impaired or distracted.
PFB, along with representatives from PennDOT, the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, as well as state Sen. Wayne Langerholc Jr., held a demonstration and event promoting Rural Roads Safety Week at Bill and Joyce Krug’s Farm in Loretto on April 15. County farm bureaus across Pennsylvania also hold local events in their communities to promote safe driving on rural roads.
For additional information about Rural Roads Safety Week and safety tips for drivers and farmers, visit www.pfb.com/RRS.

Lower Dauphin singers attend festivals
Lower Dauphin High School senior Kaitlyn Hoffman participated in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) All-State Chorus Festival from April 17 to 20. Kaitlyn, an alto, earned her spot at states after auditioning successfully at a PMEA regional festival in March.
The All-State Chorus performances took place at the Warner Theatre in Erie with Chris Jackson, artistic director and conductor of the Bach Choir of Bethlehem, conducting.
Kaitlyn is the 23rd Lower Dauphin singer in 14 years to reach the All-State level or beyond.
Each year, thousands of high school musicians across the state audition in their geographic area. Individually, students perform for a panel of judges. Students who rank the highest advance to compete against their peers from other PMEA regions. The highest-ranking student musicians at the regional level qualify to perform in one of the All-State music ensembles.
Kaitlyn is the daughter of Nichole DiVittore and Michael Hoffman. She is a four-year member of the choir program and has participated in the high school’s spring musical all four years, playing the Witch is this year’s production of “Into the Woods.” She is also a
four-year member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and a three-year member of the Science National Honor Society and the National English Honor Society. She is a four-year member of Mini-THON and serves as a committee captain, and she is a three-year member of the Diversity Club. She plans to attend college to earn a bachelor’s degree in musical theater.
Lower Dauphin was also represented in the Dauphin County Music Educators Association Chorus Festival, held on April 13 at The Forum in Harrisburg. Sixty-five Lower Dauphin students participated.
The Lower Dauphin High School students in this ensemble were Mason Barrick, Jordan Braman, Ben Esquibel, Silas Howard, Rachel Linnell, Elisa Ramirez, Graycyn Ream, Kathy Segura-Hernandez, Aubrey Subbio, Beth Tylwalk, Jaxon Umidi, Wren White, and Brynn Woodall.
The Lower Dauphin Middle School students performing at the county festival were Sofia Adams, Melodee Arrendondo-Sandoval, Ellie Cartwright, Adelaide Clouser, Levi Dickinson, Meera Gopinath, Owen Hess, Georgia Hineman, Hope Kopishke, Addison Messinger, Etsy Pearson, Kaylee Swigert, and Ayla Treven.
Representing Lower
Dauphin in the elementary chorus were Brooklynne Blake, Draeden Gagne, Scarlett Grasso, Katherine Hatfield, Elenor McKelvie, Cordelia Miller, Noelle Pugh-Montanya, Brantley Tatem, and Leah Vargas from Conewago Elementary; Layla Baird, Brady Groth, Lashay Jones-McCabe, Evelyn Mende, Amelia Miller, Liam Miller, Mason Miller, and MaryAnn Stine from East Hanover Elementary; Serenity Dieffenderfer, Isabella Funchess, Faith Hoover, Hadley Lewis, Caleigh Messick, Bradley Schell, Marissa Soriano, Ava Vickery, and Sadie Worall from Londonderry Elementary; Marley Hess, Marielle McAnulty, and Harper Romozi from Nye Elementary; and Quinn Bellows, Reese Benrud, Julia Dulabon, Vanessa Gula, Charlie Hinkle, Gianna Imundo, Londyn Lee, D.J. The mission of the Pennsylvania Pregnancy Wellness Collaborative is to provide a unified voice for pregnancy centers, educating communities and legislatures, and promoting and protecting pregnancy help statewide. For more information, visit www .papregnancy.com.
