LaRuffa Earns Eagle Rank Boy Scout Jeffrey LaRuffa of Hershey has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He is a member of Troop 65 in Hershey. For his Eagle Scout project, LaRuffa built a 25-foot concrete block retaining wall to support the custom-built barbecue smoker at American Legion Post 386 in Hershey. He then created a paver patio for the smoker to be stored. Moving the smoker from its previous location also created additional handicappedaccessible parking. LaRuffa also created a fire pit out of leftover retaining wall blocks, as well as a metal log rack for the smoker’s wood. LaRuffa earned the rank of Eagle in March and was officially awarded his patch and medal at his troop’s May Court of Honor. He made a display of his years in Scouting, beginning as a Cub Scout in first grade with Troop 108. He transferred to Troop 65 in third grade. Also included in See LaRuffa pg 3

Four major projects in Dauphin County will receive state assistance. The support comes from Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grants that were approved. Dauphin County Library System will receive $1 million for the Walnut Street Harrisburg Expansion project. The project will construct an interior connection between the current McCormick Riverfront Library and the newly acquired Haldeman Haly House. It will renovate the Haly House to support administrative offices; provide community, conference, and private counseling rooms; and renovate the lower floor of the existing library to provide space for a children’s center and welcome center. West Hanover Township Municipal Complex will receive a $500,000 grant to construct a 15,000-squarefoot municipal complex which will house several township departments. The departments include Administration, Buildings/Code Enforcement, Parks and Recreation, Public Works, West Hanover Water and Sewer Authority, and Stormwater Authority. The Rotunda Brew Pub will receive $1 million for redevelopment. The Rotunda
Fair Queen Contestants Sought
Brewing property is located at the end of the heavily trafficked Chocolate Avenue in Derry Township and sits a quarter mile from the recently constructed town square. This redevelopment will transition the business model from on-site production with limited space for on-premise consumption to a fully modernized and stateof-the-art brewpub facility that has the ability to compete with comparable locations in other states. Swatara Township Municipal Complex Facility will receive $1 million for a new Fire and Police Public Safety Building. The building will be 50,000 square feet and add secure rooms for meetings with crime victims and provide ventilation systems, decontamination areas, wash-down areas, storage areas, joint training facilities for fire and police, a covered parking area, and an emergency management operations center. The Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program is administered by the Office of the Budget for the acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational, and historical improvement projects. For more details, contact Chuck Erdman at cerdman@ pasen.gov or 717-787-6801.

Garage Sale Guide Available Bin There Dump That has developed a comprehensive Garage Sale Guide with tips and tricks to help local homeowners plan and execute a successful, enjoyable yard sale. The guide is available for downloading at www.binthere dumpthatusa.com/pdf/1/ garage-sale-guide.pdf. Before holding a yard sale, however, Mike Kernaghan, CEO of Bin There Dump That, suggests that homeowners follow several basic preparatory steps. First, people should confirm that their community and/or neighborhood allows homeowners to hold a garage or yard sale. Then, look into permit requirements and pick a day when people are likely to come; Saturdays are often best. People should do their research if they are selling art,
jewelry, fashion items, books or other items that could have substantial value. Then, focus on pricing things right, keeping in mind that anything that is sold is for a profit because these are items that the seller did not want or need anyway. Make plans to get the word out before the sale through social media and word-ofmouth. People should place eye-catching, easy-to-read signs, along with balloons on the day of the sale, at major intersections near their home and at the entrance to their neighborhood. Kernaghan said that another way to attract potential buyers is to make the sale a neighborhood event. Neighbors may even want to share the expense of a dumpster to dispose of the items that
don’t sell. Those who select items for the garage sale should remember that they have already made the decision that they don’t need them anymore. Stick to that decision and discard them rather than cart them back inside. To learn more about renting a dumpster or to discuss a project with a Bin There Dump That Dumpster consultant, contact Dolly Armstrong at Bin There Dump That of Harrisburg at 717-766-7857 or dolly@bintheredumpthat.com or Justin Sierer of Bin There Dump That of York at 717900-5101 or york@binthere dumpthat.com. Halbert Receives Woman Of Impact Award A local entrepreneur has earned recognition by the American Heart Association for her dedication and contributions in the fight against cardiovascular disease in southcentral Pennsylvania. Molly Halbert, owner of m.elene in York, has won the 2022 South Central PA Go Red for Women Woman of Impact Award. Halbert was recognized for achieving the highest number of points for her community impact activities and leading
her Susquehanna Scarlet Hearts team to raise over $21,000 in support of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement. Each year, a group of local women are nominated by their peers to embark on a nineweek journey starting in February. The women compete for the local award through a collective series of fundraising and community impact activities. Collectively, this year’s southcentral Pennsylvania
nominees and their teams took action to educate and improve the health of their communities, impacting over 2,000 people and raised nearly $40,000 for the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement. In addition to Halbert, the nominees were Heidi Bowie, strategic partnership client executive, Highmark; Emily Bumgarner, registered dietitian, Weis Markets; Lizaida Morales, medical software trainer, UPMC Central PA; and
Melissa Sprout, assistant store manager, Weis Markets. All of the Woman of Impact nominees were recognized for their efforts during the 2022 Capital Region Go Red for Women event on May 12 at the West Shore Country Club. The American Heart Association’s signature initiative, Go Red for Women, is a comprehensive platform designed to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the
lives of women globally. For more information, visit www.GoRedforWomen.org or call 800-AHA-USA1 (2428721). Information about the American Heart Association is also available at www.heart.org and on Facebook and Twitter or by calling any of the organization’s offices across the country.

Motorcycle Safety Tips Many people are drawn to motorcycles because of the intensity and excitement riding provides. What motorcycles add in terms of speed and excitement, they may lose in safety, especially when compared to cars and trucks. However, the risks associated with riding motorcycles can be reduced with some simple safety precautions. Motorcycle riders can improve the barrier between themselves and the road with the proper gear. Quality leather jackets and pants, helmets, gloves, and nonskid boots can protect the body from severe injuries. Reflective tape added to clothing can help motorcyclists become more visible to other drivers. Otherwise, wearing bright-colored clothing and riding with others as a group increases visibility. Motorcycle riders are advised to not take an unfamiliar bike into busy traffic. If the bike has never been ridden before, the rider should become familiar with its handling and responsiveness in a controlled area that is not full of traffic before taking it on the open road. Motorcycle riders should never assume a driver sees them. Staying out of blind spots and steering clear of turning vehicles can help. Riding in the rain or in other difficult conditions is riskier since the roads are slippery. Riders should slow down or keep their bike at home in inclement weather. Riders should also remove distractions while on a motorcycle. Cell phones should be stowed away so one’s attention is not drawn away from the road. Riders should remain sober and alert and never ride while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including overthe-counter medications that may cause drowsiness. Also, riders should do not drive while drowsy. Motorcyclists need to be very careful about road obstacles such as uneven road surfaces, fallen branches, oil slicks, and wet spots. According to ConsumerSafety.org, a motorcycle has less contact with the road than a car, making it more likely to skid out of control or throw a rider. By following the aforementioned suggestions, motorcyclists may stay safe on the road.

The Diocese of Harrisburg, in partnership with the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA), has announced that Sister Eileen McGowan, principal of St. Joan of Arc Catholic School in Hershey, was a recipient of the 2022 Lead. Learn. Proclaim. Award. This accolade highlights the work of Catholic school educators in communities across the country and recognizes the “outstanding efforts, contributions, and achievements on behalf of Catholic school education,” according to NCEA’s website. McGowan and 12 other honorees were recognized during the NCEA 2022 Convention on April 18 at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside. Helen Remington, computer technology, STEM, and physical education instructor at Saint Joan of Arc Catholic School, nominated McGowan. Nominees were evaluated on 20 criteria, and McGowan was among five principals selected to receive the award. McGowan has served St. Joan of Arc Catholic School for 35 years. In addition to seeing the school through the pandemic, McGowan was at the helm in the summer of 2020 when the school moved to a new building to accommodate current and future growth. The school has just under 500 students, making it one of the

largest Catholic schools in the Diocese of Harrisburg. Open to students in prekindergarten through eighth grade, St. Joan of Arc Catholic School is located just outside of Hershey in Hummelstown and has sought to form hearts, inform minds, and transform lives since 1927. The school has been under the direction of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy for more than 90 years. More information on Saint Joan of Arc Catholic School can be found at http://school.stjoan hershey.org/. The schools in the Diocese of Harrisburg enroll nearly 10,000 students and seek to provide a rigorous academic education while providing moral and faith formation according to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
