Chocolate Tour Will Support Cancer Research The ninth annual Donegal Insurance Group Chocolate Tour will take place on Saturday, Aug. 3, and will offer walking, biking, and running opportunities. Events will start at the Milton Hershey School Athletic Complex, 665 Brook Drive, Hershey. The Chocolate Tour is a rain-or-shine event. Options will include the Mike Geltrude 5K and 10K walks and the Bristol-Myers Squibb 5K and Genentech 10K races. The BriovaRx Cycling Event will offer various distances, including 10, 30, 50, 75, and 100 miles. At rest stops along the routes, walkers, runners, and cyclists may sample local chocolate; rest stops will be provided every mile for runners and walkers. Additionally, cyclists will be provided with a meal after the race. Cyclists will enjoy rides through central Pennsylvania’s Amish farm country, including wooded areas and areas surrounding Hershey, Elizabethtown, and Lititz. The 100-mile route will feature five renowned covered bridges, and the 75-mile option will feature two covered bridges. The 5K and 10K runs will be timed by Falcon Race Timing. An awards ceremony will be held at the end of the 5K and 10K runs. Medals will be awarded to the overall first-, second-, and third-place male and female finishers, as well as to the overall masters male and female finishers. Medals also will be awarded for the 5K and 10K run in the following age categories: 14 and

Museum Plans Civil War Days The National Civil War Museum, 1 Lincoln Circle at Reservoir Park, Harrisburg, has set the return of “Civil War Days in the Harrisburg Area: Invasion of South Central Pennsylvania.” This community-wide series of events aims to present and preserve Harrisburg’s Civil War heritage and history. On Friday, June 21, events will include a Harrisburg cemetery tour conducted by Jim Schmick and a tour of the Capital Preservation Committee’s Flag Laboratory. On Saturday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the museum will present a free day filled

with presentations, artillery cannon firing, Victorian dance performances and lessons, and more. On Sunday, June 23, events will include presentations at the Historical Society of Dauphin County (John Harris-Simon Cameron Mansion), the Cumberland County Historical Society, and the National Civil War Museum. The State Museum of Pennsylvania will offer free admission on June 23. Mieczkowski will give the free lecture at 1 p.m. in the parlor of the mansion. From 2 to 3 p.m., free self-guided tours will be available. In period dress, Mieczkowski, a licensed battlefield guide at the Gettysburg National Military Park, will present a first-person discussion of Cameron and the controversies that surround him to this day. A rich industrialist, railroad magnate, banker, minister to Russia, and senator, Cameron served as Lincoln’s first Secretary of War and helped build the Union war machine. The historical society’s 150th annual membership meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 26, at 6 p.m. at Market Square Presbyterian Church, 20 S. Second St., Harrisburg. The meeting will feature brief remarks, the election of trustees, recognition of volunteers, and food. Past HSDC board president John Robinson will give a presentation on the history of Market Square

Presbyterian. On June 4, 1869, a meeting was held in the Lecture Room of Market Square Presbyterian to “perfect an organization” of the Historical Society of Dauphin County. Parking will be available at no cost starting at 5:30 p.m. in the parking garage directly next to the church. Independence Day at the Mansion will be celebrated on Thursday, July 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the John Harris-Simon Cameron Mansion. The ninth annual public readings of the Declaration of Independence will take place at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and noon. John Harris Jr., portrayed by re-enactor David Biser, will read the document from the porch of the mansion; Benjamin Franklin will also be present. There is no fee to hear the readings, and free parking will be available behind the

mansion and in the UPMC Hospital parking garage. Tours of the mansion will be offered after each reading for a fee. HSDC members, children age 6 and under, and any police, fire, first responder, and military personnel and their families will be admitted free. There will also be free activities for children. The Founding Father Riverboat Cruise has been set for Sunday, July 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. Attendees will enjoy a scenic tour of the Susquehanna River and dinner while learning all about the area’s history aboard The Pride of the Susquehanna River Boat. Benjamin Franklin will share stories of the “frontier” of Pennsylvania and life along the Susquehanna during Colonial times. Tickets will include the program, the cruise, a full dinner, and dessert. Separate ticket costs have been set for HSDC members, nonmembers, and children age 12 and under. Space is limited, and reservations are required by calling the HSDC office at 717-233-3462.

Audrey Meyers, the daughter of Diana and Dean Meyers, participates in chorus, orchestra, musical theater, and track and

field. In the community, she has studied dance for 10 years at the Harrisburg Academy of Dance and the Susquehanna Dance Academy, where she is a teacher’s assistant. Makayla Shutt, the daughter of Barb and Brad Shutt, participates in the orchestra. In the community, she is involved in Scouting and volunteered with the Hummelstown Winter Fling. Lauren Wahlers is the daughter of Melissa Brutko and Peter Wahlers. She participates in band, basketball, and musical theater. In the community, she is involved in AAU basketball and club volleyball. Toby Waters is the son of Pam and David Waters. He participates in cross-country, basketball, soccer, and track and field. He represented his school twice at the state Geography Bee and also won the school’s spelling bee. In the community, he participates in volleyball.

Geisinger was recently named to the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Governor’s Employer Honor Roll. Geisinger was nominated by the Central Pennsylvania Workforce Development Corporation (CPWDC) and the Employment Advancement and Retention Network (EARN). The award recognizes Geisinger’s ongoing collaboration with the EARN program, which assists low-income individuals who face serious barriers in gaining and maintaining employment. This partnership has resulted in the hiring of seven EARN participants in full-time positions within

Geisinger as environmental services technicians, nursing assistants, and licensed practical nurses. These positions offer comprehensive benefits and the ability to advance in long-term career pathways. Geisinger was also recognized for its efforts to understand and assist with the challenges faced by EARN participants in finding and maintaining employment, including reliable transportation. EARN staff and Geisinger human resources staff work together to identify available positions at Geisinger locations that help alleviate these barriers. Hershey Theatre Schedules Shows Hershey Theatre, 15 E. Caracas Ave., Hershey, recently announced a diverse selection of four Broadway shows taking the stage at the historic venue as part of its 201920 season. Subscription packages for these shows are available at www.hersheyentertainment.com. The 2019-20 Broadway Series programming includes Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Once on This Island,” “Waitress,” and “Anastasia.” The season will kick off with “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” on Tuesday, Sept. 10, through Sunday, Sept. 15.

Four optional shows will also be offered at the Hershey Theatre during the 2019-20 Broadway season. “The Book of Mormon” will return to Hershey in August 2020. The full list of optional attractions includes “A Bronx Tale” in November, “Bandstand” in February 2020, and Blue Man Group in March 2020. The fifth annual 5K Hummelstown Hunger Run took place on May 11. The event raised more than $18,000 for the Hummelstown Food Pantry.
