The Freedom Independent Guard and Dance teams were honored at the Tournament Indoor Association All-Chapter Championships in Wildwood, N.J. The novice guard,

for people ages 10 to 22, took the gold, becoming the 2024 independent novice champions, and the junior guard, for those ages 7 to 15, placed second. The dance team, consisting of youths and young adults ages 10 to 22,

placed fifth and was promoted to Regional A Class after only its second competition of the season.

The previous Saturday, the teams competed at the Chapter 6 competition, and all three groups won first place and brought home a gold medal.

Freedom Independent Guard and Dance is a nonprofit youth organization consisting of students from Elizabethtown Area, Middletown, Lower Dauphin, and Steelton-Highspire school districts; Dauphin County Technical School; and HACC,

Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. Two instructors lead the program.

Members of the organization will be at the Hummelstown Fireman’s Carnival from Monday to Saturday, June 17 to June 22, running the bake wheel and the games. They will present an exhibition in front of the bandstand

At its meeting on May 20, the Lower Dauphin school board met 12 eighth-graders who will complete their entire middle school career having earned distinguished honor roll every marking period.

The students are Carah Burton, Levi Dickinson, Chelsea Gula, Owen Hess, Lorelei Hoffer, Seylah Hoke, Abigail Irwin, Adysyn Matincheck, Michael Sather, Meredith Taylor, Jordyn White and Isabel Zulli.

Carah, the daughter of Paul and Suzanne Burton, is a

member of the field hockey team and girls’ lacrosse team.

Levi, the son of Angela and Matthew Dickinson, is a member of the cross-country team and participates in the middle school’s spring musicals and in the orchestra, jazz band and chorus. He is active in his church and its youth group and is a member of Boy Scouts.

Chelsea, the daughter of Jim and Amy Gula, is a member of the soccer, basketball and cross-country teams and plays cello in the school orchestra.

Lectures, concerts, children’s programs and more will be part of the Pennsylvania Chautauqua happening this summer in Mount Gretna. Chautauqua, an Iroquois word with several meanings, began in the late 1800s as an adult education movement designed to bring programs and lectures to rural areas, said Sue Hostetter, chair of the PA Chautauqua Summer Programs Committee.

The program was created by

Sunday school teacher Lewis Miller and John Heyl Vincent to train teachers and educate the middle classes, Hostetter explained, adding, “The Sunday school here is not what most of us think of today. It was an actual school that met on Sundays for children who worked the other six days of the week.” At the turn of the 20th century, there were more than 200 Chautauquas across the country, with some traveling and some settled in one place. Mount Gretna’s Chautauqua is one of about 15 that remain, she said.

While the program has changed over the decades, some things have remained consistent, including a focus on programs based on four pillars: religion, recreation, arts and culture and education.

All summer programs at the Pennsylvania Chautauqua are open to the public and funded entirely by donation. Highlights of this summer’s schedule include book reviews presented by Lebanon Valley College professors and poetry lectures with Jesse Waters of Elizabethtown College.

“There is a lecture in August on artificial intelligence - its many applications in its current state, its limitations and where it might be headed,” Hostetter noted. “‘Beyond the Two-State Solution’ with international human rights lawyer Jonathan Kuttab should be an interesting talk. There are lectures on edible plants of PA, eco-gardening and biological diversity; an Agatha Christie film series; a six-part history series called ‘Decades That Transformed the

Modern Western World.’ Also popular are the art lectures by Gloria Mast and nationally known artist lectures brought in by the Mount Gretna School of Art.”

Children’s programs include Kid’s Art with Kelly, kids’ yoga and Gretna Music for Kids. “The Fourth of July brings a morning bike parade and an evening patriotic concert with the Keystone Band of Rehrersburg, back for its 64th year,” Hostetter commented. Crafts and cuisine programs include hands-on sourdough bread making, nature drawing for beginners and copycat recipes.

Planning for the summer programming is coordinated by an all-volunteer committee that meets from November through March annually. The group focuses on the four pillars, and committee members scout lectures, exhibits, concerts, newspaper articles and books to find subjects for programs.

“Just within Mount Gretna, we have any number of talented people who willingly share their stories and expertise with us,” Hostetter said. “In addition, we are fortunate to have relationships with some of the four excellent colleges within a 20-mile radius of us.”

Hostetter noted that while the majority of programs require no

advance registration, some of the art and cooking classes have size limits, deadlines and fees to cover the cost of materials. For more

information or to register for a class, visit www.pachautauqua .info and click on “Summer Programs” or call 717-200-1187.

Hummelstown Hunger Run raises funds for food pantry

Event organizers B.J. and Jill Osevala reported that the ninth annual Hummelstown Hunger Run was a great success this year, raising more than $36,000 for the Hummelstown Food Pantry. The food pantry also received four truck beds full of nonperishable food items donated by the participants and volunteers,

along with water and snacks from the event.

This year’s Hunger Run, held on May 11 at Schaffner Park in Hummelstown, featured a 5K run and walk, as well as a 5-mile run. There were 433 participants in the event, assisted by more than 100 volunteers.

For the first time, there was a female overall 5K winner, Stephanie Cassel, with a time of 15 minutes, 30 seconds. The male winner of the 5K run was Scott McGeary, who completed

the run with a time of 16 minutes, 58 seconds, while pushing a stroller.

The first-place male winner of the 5-mile run was Alex Pearson, with a time of 28:36. The firstplace female 5-mile winner was Chas Lynn Meloy, with a time of 38:04.

The Hummelstown Hunger Run was created by the Osevalas to help support the Hummelstown Food Pantry. It is always held on the second Saturday in May. The 10th annual Hummelstown

Luciani wins Woman of Impact title

Alicia Luciani, a senior technical business analyst at Capital Blue Cross, has been named the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women 2024 Capital Region Woman of Impact winner. She was honored for her work to raise funds and spread awareness in the fight against heart disease and stroke in women and to improve health and well-being in the local community. In the United States, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, and Luciani’s mother died as a result of heart disease.

To compete for the Woman of Impact title, Luciani, along with her team of family members, friends, and colleagues, participated in various community awareness and fundraising activities over the course of nine weeks. After raising funds and driving women’s health education initiatives, Luciani was named this year’s winner.

The Woman of Impact campaign is part of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement, a comprehensive platform designed more than two decades ago to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally.

The Woman of Impact campaign launched in more than 100 cities on National Wear Red Day, Feb. 2. In the Harrisburg area, eight community

leaders were nominated to participate. Collectively, this year’s Capital Region nominees raised more than $36,860 for the Go Red for Women movement.

The other local nominees were Shannon Claire, brand photographer and owner of the Content Creator’s Collective; Jenn Dusart, owner of Workout With Jenn; Brandi Hunter-Davenport, senior associate at Triad Strategies; Addeline Alaniz Edwards, business development specialist with Abel Personnel; Carmen Kitts, aesthetic registered nurse at GLO Skin Care MD; Eliz Nestorov, owner and chief influence officer of AKAEVA Consulting; and Amy B. Porto, owner and registered dietitian of Professor Eatbetter.

The Woman of Impact nominees and winner were scheduled to be recognized at the annual Capital Region Go Red for Women event on May 16 at the West Shore Country Club in Camp Hill.

Lower Dauphin seeks public input

Lower Dauphin School District has contracted with RLPS Architects of Lancaster to conduct a district-wide facility assessment.

The RLPS team has been meeting with administrators and school board members monthly since February. In addition, the team toured the district’s eight academic buildings and 12 support facilities to evaluate the condition of the properties, their existing use, and traffic flow. The RLPS representatives also examined the district’s enrollment, growth, and building capacities.

The next step in the process is obtaining information from district stakeholders - students, parents, school staff members,

and community members. To do this, RLPS has developed a short survey, which can be accessed by visiting www.ldsd.org and looking under “Headlines” on the right side of the page.

The purpose of the survey is to provide all community members with an opportunity to engage with and provide input early in the facility assessment process. The community will continue to be engaged in various ways as the district-wide facility assessment is developed.

The survey will close on Friday, June 21.

For more information, contact Todd Neuhard, assistant to the superintendent, at 717-566-5317 or tneuhard@ldsd.org.
