Gretna Music sets concert, kids’ activities
Clair Clawser continues to lead his best life
BY JEFF FALKHow do you encapsulate the meaning of a man’s life in 500 words?
Clair Clawser has always led an active, colorful existence, filling the natural lulls with adventure, work and energy. It continues to be a life well-lived, a complete and rewarding life.
If indeed Clawser has any regrets at all, it’s that he’s beginning to slow down.
“Who wants to sit around and watch TV all day?” said Clawser.
“I have an active mind and an active body. I’m always thinking about what’s next. I’m up for anything. I’m active because I’m able to do so much.”
The 78-year-old Clawser is a resident of Poplar Grove, a small hamlet due west of Brickerville. After working the majority of his adult life as a printer and a materials handler, Clawser retired in 2016 and now devotes his energies to his many interests, pursuits and curiosities, as well as a part-time summer job at Dutch Wonderland as a ride operator.

Gretna Music will present the Ulysses Quartet in concert on Sunday, June 30, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will take place at the Mt. Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna.
Founded in 2015, the Ulysses Quartet strives to perform and promote classical music from the past and present to expand understanding of the musical arts. The quartet consists of Christina Bouey and Rhiannon Banerdt on violin, Peter Dudek playing viola, and Grace Ho on cello.
The upcoming program will feature works by woman composers of the 19th and 20th centuries, such as Fanny Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in E Minor, a string quartet by Germaine Tailleferre, and the String Quartet in B Minor by Teresa Carreño. The Ulysses Quartet will also perform “Wild Summer” by living female composer Joan Tower.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and there will be First Listen performance at 6:45 p.m., featuring pianist Daniel Huang. First Listen programs present local youths in free mini-concerts before the mainstage concerts.
Additionally, the Ulysses Quartet will participate in two events in the kids’ music program GM4K. Both events are free and will take place in the Hall of Philosophy, 212 Gettysburg Ave., Mount Gretna.
On Saturday, June 29, at 2 p.m., “Around the World” will offer an opportunity for children to explore music from different parts of the world. Participants will be introduced to the concepts of rhythm, harmony, and style, along with string techniques, and they will learn about a variety of composers. This event is recommended for kids in grades four through eight.
The quartet will also be featured in “Animal Friends” on Monday, July 1, at 10 a.m. Children will learn about animal sounds and characters in music from different eras using concepts of texture and stringed instrument characteristics and techniques. This event is recommended for those in kindergarten through fourth grade.

Clawser never married.
“I’m retired, but I’m not,” said Clawser. “I guess I’ve aged, but I don’t worry about it. I don’t worry about getting old. I know it’s not going to go forever. I’ve cut back on some things, but I still do them. I’m going to continue to slow down. I have to have a little more rest than I used to. I can do everything until about 2 (p.m.).
That’s when I need a rest, but then I can come back.”
Over the last six decades, Clawser has worn many hats, and they’ve all fit him pretty well.
In addition to his work as a materials handler and a printer, the Hershey High School graduate has been an entrepreneur and written and published numerous books and comic books. A regular participant in Pennsylvania’s Senior Games, Clawser has competed in the sports of distance running - about 1,323 total races - along with basketball, badminton, bowling, darts, miniature golf, horseshoes, pingpong and
bocce, all successfully, but without much fanfare.
“I’m very competitive to a point, but I’m just average at everything,” said Clawser. “I just try to do the best I can all the time. I have all these ideas pouring out of me, but I’ve never been able to hit it big time.”
He is also an avid traveler, an unofficial historian, an aspiring singer, a Renaissance man and a 14-year cancer survivor.
A character and personality guy, Clawser is a respectful man, a genuine man and a gentleman. He has faced his share of setbacks and challenges, but he has always chosen to focus on the positives, and his greatest life accomplishment might be his perseverance.
“I often look back,” said Clawser. “I have no regrets. There are no regrets, just enjoying what you did. I’m happy. I just love to do all this stuff.”
Or, as the late great baseball pitcher Satchel Paige once said, “Don’t look back. Something might be gaining on you.”
Each session is self-contained, so people may join at any time. There is no cost to attend the program, but registration is requested by calling the church office at 717-533-9667. Child care is not available. More details about GriefShare are available at www.griefshare.org.

Abigail is a four-year member of Class Council and volunteers at Hershey Gardens. She plans to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts and major in
musical theater.
In September, she was named semifinalist in the National Merit program. To receive a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition.
About 95% of the semifinalists attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists win a National Merit Scholarship. Student from pg 1
PA Turnpike kicks off safety campaign
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) kicked off its annual Go Orange campaign, an education and awareness campaign that showcases the PA Turnpike’s commitment to safety and urges drivers to slow down, pay attention in work zones, and consider the vulnerability of highway workers. The campaign will run until October and will include a special commemoration remembering those who have died in the line of duty.
More than 40 PA Turnpike workers have died while performing their duties. Beyond the devastating impact that reckless driving can have on others, drivers can receive citations, warnings, fines, points on their license, and jail time.
The PA Turnpike operates more than 560 miles of
roadway, and more than 200 million people travel on the turnpike every year. Despite a record-breaking low of traffic fatalities in 2019 and fewer cars on the road in 2020, deaths on Pennsylvania roadways increased from 2019 to 2022.
Safety is a top priority and core value for the PA Turnpike. As part of its commitment to safety, PA Turnpike operates a variety of safety initiatives, including the Work Zone Speed Safety Camera Program, five district safety committees, and Safety Days for its employees.
The GEICO Safety Patrol is another initiative of the PA Turnpike, providing a fleet of safety patrol vehicles that provide roadside assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to customers who use the turnpike. The patrol
actively surveils the roadway, responds to incidents, and communicates with the Turnpike Operations Center regarding any other needed response. Customers can access this assistance by dialing *11 when on the turnpike.
The PA Turnpike kicked off the Go Orange campaign by displaying its Lost Worker Memorial outside turnpike headquarters, and the memorial will be displayed during the summer at various spots throughout Pennsylvania. The PA Turnpike encourages its employees and members of the public to wear orange on Wednesdays to show their support and remind motorists to always drive safely through work zones.
In addition, travelers on the PA Turnpike will

Students graduate pre-apprenticeship program
The Manufacturers’ Association recently concluded the seventh year of its high school pre-apprenticeship program with a graduation ceremony hosted at Penn State York’s campus during the national Youth Apprenticeship Week. The association’s pre-apprenticeship program introduces high school students to advanced manufacturing occupations in seven trades and provides opportunities to pursue in-demand careers. The program includes students from York, Lancaster, Perry, Chester, Dauphin, Cumberland, and Lebanon counties, including the Milton Hershey School as well as career and technical high schools.
This year’s pre-apprenticeship program graduated 70 students from across southcentral Pennsylvania. The recognition event included students receiving their state recognized pre-apprenticeship credential witnessed by invited guests, family members, program partners, and association employers. The program also included awarding the annual Carl Winters
Jr. Memorial Scholarship, which provides $1,000 in funds for further education or training in an industrial career. This year’s recipient is Cristian Saylor from Red Land High School in the West Shore School District. Cristian plans to pursue a career in mechatronics and attend HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. The scholarship was established in honor of Carl Winters Jr. after his passing. Winters was a die and tool maker by trade for more than 50 years in the York area and the creator of the original pre-apprenticeship program at the Manufacturers’
Association.
Pre-apprenticeship programs are designed to offer classroom and hands-on learning specifically to train students to enter a registered apprenticeship program with an employer or continue their technical education. The association’s program started in 2017 with a handful of students and since then has enrolled more than 300 students across southcentral Pennsylvania in the skills program. Students receive several industry recognized credentials, and upon graduation, they have the opportunity to enter full registered apprenticeships with sponsoring
employers while benefiting from advanced placement the pre-apprenticeship provides for graduates of the program.
The program is registered with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry and has received support from the state agency to expand the program across southcentral Pennsylvania. In addition, the pre-apprenticeship program partners with the Partnership for Career Development, York County Alliance for Learning, Chester County Intermediate Unit, the Lancaster County Workforce Development Board, and dozens of employers.

Members of the East Hanover Lions Club celebrated their Charter Night on May 14 at Perkins Restaurant. The group celebrated 73 years as a charter club. During the event, club president Josie Moyer presented the Presidential Appreciation Award to Lions Club member Eileen Longreen for her help in the past year. The Lion of the Year Award was presented to Barb Bloom for her hard work and dedication to the club.
Entertainment during Charter Night was provided by Memory Music, composed of Tom and Randi LaNasa from York, who provided music from the ’50s and ’60s. Prior to Charter Night, the Lions Club inducted new member Chrissy LaRuffa at its dinner meeting on April 30. First vice district governor Nate Pfister performed the ceremony to welcome LaRuffa, who was sponsored by Lions Club member Eileen Longreen.
