Scouts Earn BSA Honors wo southcentral Pennsylvania teens - Benjamin LaVerdiere and Sarah LaVerdiere - recently made history as members of Troop 262, which is sponsored by St. John’s United Methodist Church (UMC), Grantville. On May 8, Ben, an Eagle Scout, completed the requirements for the Oceanography merit badge. With its completion, Ben has now earned all 138 merit badges offered by Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Since its inception in 1910, fewer than 500 Scouts have earned every merit badge. Very early in his Scouting career, Ben set the goal of attaining all the merit badges. He has earned merit badges at Scouts BSA summer camps, at local merit badge college events, and during activities with his troop, as well as on his own initiative. Ben has continued his studies begun with several merit badges -

The capstone requirement for earning the Eagle Scout Award is the planning, organization, and supervision of the implementation of a major service project. Her service project was the replacement of a deck at St. John’s UMC. She led other Scouts in removing a decaying wooden outdoor deck and replacing it with a more maintenance-free structure. In addition to her rank advancement efforts, Sarah has participated with her troop in a variety of hiking and camping activities, area-wide Camporees, a sailing and snorkeling opportunity in the Bahamas at the BSA National High Adventure Sea Base, and an Okpik cold weather camping and adventure program in Maine. She has attended a National Youth Leadership Training program and has served her troop as a patrol leader and, currently, as the senior patrol leader. These are rarely seen Morgan Silver Dollars some dating back to the 1800’s so we won’t be surprised if thousands of U.S. residents claim as many as they can get their hands on. That’s because after the bags were loaded with 50 U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade quality of very good or above, the dates and mint marks were never searched to determine collector values and the bags were securely sealed. Making New Friends After 50 The early years of midlife are a hectic time for many people. Around the time people reach their late 30s and early 40s, many of them are balancing the responsibilities of a career and a family. But as people enter their 50s, some of those responsibilities may be less significant, leaving more time for recreational pursuits. Hobbies and other pursuits outside work are often more fun when enjoyed with friends. People over 50 likely recognize that it’s not always easy to make new friends, even though it’s beneficial to have supportive relationships in one’s golden years. A 2017 study from researchers at Michigan State University found that valuing friendships was a stronger predictor of health and happiness among older adults than valuing family. Making friends after 50 might not be as simple as it was during one’s school days, but the following strategies can help to build new friendships. - Identify interests. Fifty-somethings who have spent the last couple of decades building a career and raising a family can give some serious thought to their interests outside of work or passions they hope to pursue now that they have more time to commit to such pur-
suits. The more interested a person is in a given activity, the more likely he or she is to stick with it and possibly meet like-minded individuals who may become friends. - Utilize social media. In years past, men and women over 50 may not have had readily available tools to reach out and connect with new people. Social media has made it easier to build such connections. Even the most obscure passions likely have a social media group of locals devoted to them, and these groups can be great ways to meet new people. A local runners’ club may have its own social media accounts, and local governments and community groups often share information about sports leagues and other groups via social media. - Sign up for group outings.
Communities often sponsor group outings to museums, theatrical productions, sporting events, and more. Signing up for a bus trip to a local museum presents a great opportunity to meet people who share one’s interests, providing the potential to build lasting friendships. - Broaden your horizons. Just because people are in their 50s does not mean their friends have to be. Friends come in all ages, so don’t hesitate to invite younger or older acquaintances and colleagues over for dinner or on weekend excursions. Making friends after 50 can be challenging. However, various strategies can help people in this age group to connect with new people.
Tips For Seniors To Lessen Their Financial Load By the time people reach their 50th birthday, many have begun to imagine what their life in retirement may look like. People may seek ways to reduce their financial load in anticipation of the day when they will no longer work. Cutting back need not be complicated, and the following are some simple ways for individuals to save money. - Address unsecured debt. Unsecured debt, which can include credit card balances and medical bills, tends to carry higher interest rates than debts that carry a collateral requirement. According to the Federal Reserve, roughly 12.5% of individuals over 50 still have student loan debt, which is another type of unsecured debt. If possible, people over 50 should pay off these debts immediately or make their best effort to pay extra each month so
the debts are paid off as soon as possible. - Pay in cash. It’s not enough to simply pay off unsecured debt like consumer credit. It’s also important to stop accruing additional debt. Individuals over 50 should resist the temptation to use their credit cards, instead paying with cash or debit cards. Credit card debt is often characterized as a problem for young consumers, but a 2021 report from ValuePenguin found that the median credit card debt among individuals between the ages of 55 and 64 was higher than it was for consumers ages 35 to 44. Paying in cash, whether it’s with paper currency or a debit card, ensures you’re not digging yourself into debt. - Re-examine your housing situation. Adults 50 and over who purchased their home in their late 20s or early 30s are likely nearing
the maturity date on their mortgages. If so, paying a little extra toward the principal each month will help to pay off the mortgage a good deal earlier than paying the same amount you’ve been paying for years. Although paying extra money each month may not seem like reducing one’s financial load, it will do so considerably over time. For example, the financial experts at Wells Fargo note that individuals with a fixed-rate mortage loan of $200,000 at 4% can cut the term of that loan by more than four and a half years by paying as little as $100 extra each month toward their principal. Homeowners over 50 who have already paid off a significant percentage of their mortgage loans could bring these loans to maturity much sooner if they start paying more toward principal now. Since housing costs are many peo-
ple’s greatest expense, removing a mortgage payment from your financial ledger by the time you reach 55 could create significant financial flexibility as you get closer to retirement. Individuals over 50 can utilize some simple yet effective strategies to reduce their financial obligations as retirement nears.

Chorale Plans Ireland Tour After more than a year of planning and waiting, the Susquehanna Chorale is ready to travel to Ireland to share some of the choral music its members have been performing locally for decades. The Mechanicsburg-based group adjusted its original plans to tour Poland and Austria due to the war in Ukraine and COVID policies. The Susquehanna Chorale will depart on Monday, July 11, and return on Wednesday, July 20, with planned excursions to Dublin; the ancient monastic settlement of Clonmacnoise; the wild Connemara Region; the historic Kylemore Abbey, home to the Irish order of Benedictine nuns; the Aran Islands; and the Cliffs of Moher. The tour will conclude with stops in Killarney and an excursion around the Ring of Kerry. Planned performances include recitals at Kylemore Abbey and St. Nicholas Collegiate Church in Galway on Wednesday, July 13; Saint Mary’s Church of the Sloes in Killarney on Saturday, July 16; and St. Joseph’s Parish Church in Dublin on Monday, July 18.
