Ben and Tim Day scholarships awarded

At a recent awards ceremony, graduating seniors from Hershey High School received scholarships funded by the annual Ben and Tim Day.

Thirty-six students were presented with Ben Yupcavage and Tim Russell Memorial Scholarships. Students were selected based on academic achievement, leadership and service to community and church, as well as acceptance to an accredited four-year, two-year, or vocational institution. Each recipient received $1,000.

The scholarship recipients were Lucy Barto, Anthony Bernardo, Elaine Blacker, Alana Boyle, Emily Bryant, Eamon Callahan, Mason Callahan, Natalie Colarossi, Elliana Crosswell, Emma Drabik, George R. Grant Ebert, Jessica Gearhart, Renato Jimenez Polar, Christina Lengle, Edward Liszka, Yanwei Liu, Catherine Martin, Aneela Mathew, Lydia McMullen, Emily Moss, Richard Olszewski, Joseph Owsley, Alexander Petula, Logan

Richards, Allison Rogers, Hailey Russell, Riley Schmidt, Anirudh Sethi, Ciaran Sieg, Tucker Valoczki, Anthony Vasquezi, Riley Welsch, Dominic Wetherhold, Jazayah Wiggins, Seth Wildasin, and Markus Wingert.

Al was Tim Russell’s cross-country coach for three years, and he is currently entering his 48th season as the Hershey High School cross-country coach.

Yupcavage and Russell were Hershey High School student-athletes killed in an automobile accident in 1992. Their families established a memorial fund, which has awarded more than $280,000 in educational scholarships to high school students as well as to

Gettysburg program set

The Hershey Civil War Roundtable will meet on Thursday, July 18, at Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 542, 8000 Derry St., Harrisburg, at 7:30 p.m. The program will also be livestreamed via Zoom and Facebook, and the recording will be posted at www.hersheycwrt .org after the meeting.

Bruce E. Mowday will present “Three Views of Gettysburg,” combining information from his books “Pickett’s Charge: The Untold Story,” “J. Howard Wert’s Gettysburg,” and “Emotional Gettysburg.” Mowday will describe why he believed the Pickett’s Charge book was

necessary. The book led to his work on the largest private collection of artifacts of Gettysburg, which includes the podium used by President Lincoln. Mowday had an opportunity to stand behind the podium as a television network filmed a show on his book. “Emotional Gettysburg” takes a look at the history and legacy of the Battle of Gettysburg. Mowday has an ancestor who was wounded at the wheatfield during the battle.

The meeting is free and open to the public. For additional information, contact Ricky Hollis at rickyhollissr@gmail.com or visit the aforementioned website.
