School honors students who will join military

Lower Dauphin High School recently celebrated eight students who had made a commitment to serving in the armed services. The students were honored at a ceremony in the school auditorium on May 30.

Retired Col. Chad Goyette was the guest speaker at the event, telling the students about the virtue of selfless sacrifice, which is a core value in the United States Army. Goyette is the senior Army instructor for the high school’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program.

The students who were recognized are as follows.

Noah Brown is the son of Emily and Ricky Shenfeld. He will join the United States Army and plans to have a career with the military.

Neyten Diaz, the son of Yadira Roman and Tito Torres, will join the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. He plans to become a

nurse practitioner.

Skyler Gorberg is the son of Scott and Tasha Gorberg. He will join the United States Army and plans to have a career with the military.

Hunter Lawson is the son of Christopher and Jessica Lawson. He will join the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and will head to Fort Moore for basic training and job training.

Lillian Linnell, the daughter of Joachim and Katherine Linnell, will join Lehigh University’s Army ROTC program, which offered her a three-year scholarship. She will major in public health on a pre-med track with the goal of becoming a trauma doctor.

Megan Mayberry is the daughter of Mark and Julia Mayberry. She will join the United States Air Force and plans to enlist in the Pennsylvania State Police after her service.

Alek McGlaughlin, the son of Tom and Jamie McGlaughlin, will

attend the United States Military Academy at West Point. He will major in defense and strategic studies with the goal of working in

military intelligence or the military police.

Derek Vandernick is the son of Doug and Sheila Vandernick.

Derek will join the United States Army and plans to attend airborne school after basic training with the goal of becoming an Army Ranger.
