TheHershey Symphony Orchestra has announced its 55th season.
Under the baton of new music director Greg Woodbridge, the orchestra will kick off the season on Saturday, Sept. 23, with some of Woodbridge’s favorite pieces. “A Little of This, A Little of That…” will include music by Beethoven, Glinka, Mahler, Falla, and Rachmaninov. The orchestra will be joined by guest artists Gwendolyn Bowers, mezzo-soprano, and Eric Fung, piano. Woodbridge, who serves as the first Maestra Dr. Sandra Dackow Endowed Chair, will hold a special talkback with audience members immediately following the concert.
Singer LaKisha Jones of Broadway and “American Idol” fame will lead the vocals for “Queens of Rock and Soul” on Friday, Oct. 27. Maurice Ravel.
On Friday, April 26, the symphony will present its final performance of the season, “Treasured and Timeless.” The concert will include a musical tour of Eastern Europe with the Enesco’s “Roumanian Rhapsody No. 1” and Prokofiev’s Suite 2 from “Romeo and Juliet.”

Picking up dinner on Saturday, Aug. 12, will help neighbors in need. Hope Within Ministries will hold a drivethrough chicken barbecue from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of its office, 4748 E. Harrisburg Pike, Elizabethtown. Preorders must be made by Tuesday, Aug. 1. The meal will feature a halfchicken from Nolt’s Chicken BBQ, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll, butter and a drink.
“Hope Within has held our chicken barbecue fundraisers annually since 2021, usually having one in the summer and another in the fall,” explained Audrie Zettick Schaller, director of development. “They are popular because donors can help support our work by doing something they already do - eat. Also, when you purchase tick-
ets online, you have an option of picking up the meal for yourself or donating it toward the benefit of one of our client families.”
Hope Within Community Health, Counseling and Dental Center provides free primary medical care, many prescriptions and donation-based dental care to medically uninsured residents of Lancaster, Dauphin and Lebanon counties whose household income is at 250% of the federal poverty level or less. “We also offer low-cost counseling to anyone, with no eligibility requirements, on a mutually agreed-upon, income-based fee that starts as low as $5 per session,” Zettick Schaller said.
“We are able to provide these services via the generosity of 32-plus volunteers, licensed medical and dental providers, therapists and nurses who are with us on their days off. But supporting their work
requires us to rely on donations. These donations might help with getting medically necessary supplies, access to medical records management software or any variety of other operational expenses. This is particularly true of our dental area of practice, where one visit might cost us upwards of $250 for consumable supplies for each patient.”
She noted that the need is great in the community, adding that Hope Within went from 616 medical visits in 2019 to more than 1,700 in 2022, along with 288 dental visits and 426 counseling appointments. The organization is on track to exceed those numbers in 2023.
Zettick Schaller encouraged people to order a barbecue dinner, noting that it will make a difference in the community.
“Getting a meal helps your
neighbors - the hard-working people who are single moms, delivery drivers, child care workers, waitstaff and more,” she said. “Statistics show that 27% of Pennsylvanians who work still struggle to survive in today’s world. ... With rising prices, these families are making tough decisions. Do I get the car fixed so I can get to work and put food on the table, or do I pay a monthly health insurance premium? These are the people Hope
On Saturday, Aug. 5, the 13th annual Donegal Insurance Chocolate Tour will kick off from the Manheim Farm Show Complex, 502 E. Adele Ave. It will feature six bike routes, ranging from 10 miles to 100 miles, with participants rolling out between 7 and 8:30 a.m. A 2-mile fun walk will begin at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the tour will benefit cancer research.
“The routes wander through the scenic southcentral Pennsylvania countryside that highlight the beauty of the area, the history of farming and the tradition of chocolate that the area is well known for,” said Will Stone, Chocolate Tour committee member. “The longer routes inevitably take the cyclists through covered bridges. All routes have full support, including rest stops and mechanical support.”
The fun walk is dog-friendly and will take participants through the covered bridge at the Farm Show complex and along the Chiques Creek trail, explained Cheryl Gamber, Chocolate Tour committee member. She noted that chocolate treats will be offered along the trail, and ice cream will be provided for all at the end of the route, including pup cups for canine participants.
“The Chocolate Tour is a family-friendly event,” Gamber said. “Cycling and walk participants are treated to lunch, hydrating
beverages, Kreider’s ice cream, a (giveaway drawing) and, of course, lots of chocolate,” she stated.
Throughout its 13-year history, the Chocolate Tour has provided seed money for initial research projects that have led to larger cancer research grant awards for the Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Cancer Institute, she shared.
“Currently, $2 million in cancer research grants are active at the College of Medicine as a result of Chocolate Tour funds,” Gamber said.
Some of the bike rides are dedicated to cyclists who have passed away from cancer in the past year, she remarked, noting that the 100-mile ride is dedicated to Jim Wilson of Hummelstown, while the 50-mile ride is dedicated to Rich Snively of Lititz. The 35-mile ride is dedicated to Glenn Curtis of
Bernville, and the 25-mile ride is dedicated to Bernhard Robertson of Johns Creek, Ga. The 10-mile ride is dedicated to John Richie of Hummelstown.
Stone emphasized that people can support the Chocolate Tour even if they cannot attend in person on Aug. 5.
“Join us virtually by signing up, picking your favorite route and riding anytime between Aug. 6 and Aug. 8, and enjoy the scenery,” he said. “Please post any ride pictures on social media, and don’t forget to use #23choctour.”
Vendors will also be on-site during the Chocolate Tour, including Penn State Department of Dermatology, Excel Physical Therapy, HQ Water Solutions and Hush Money Bikes. 2023 Chocolate Tour sponsors include Donegal Insurance Group, Cargill, PSECU and Northwest Bank.
For more information, to register or to donate, visit www.bikesignup.com/Race/Pa/ Manheim/ChocolateTour.

In recognition of successful programs to reduce its environmental impact, Lebanon Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Lebanon VAMC) received the Partner for Change Award from Practice Greenhealth, an organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care. The award is one of the Environmental Excellence Awards given each year to honor environmental achievements in the health care sector. This is the seventh year in a row Lebanon VAMC has been granted the award.
The Partner for Change Award recognizes health care facilities that continuously improve and expand upon programs to eliminate mercury, reduce and recycle waste, source products sustainably and more. Winning facilities must demonstrate that they are recycling at least 15% of their total waste, have reduced regulated medical waste, are on track to eliminate mercury and have developed suc-
cessful sustainability programs in many areas.
Lebanon VAMC currently recycles 58% of waste generated, partners with services within the hospital to use greener products and actively works to implement green designs on new engineering and construction projects. Lebanon VAMC also created a Green Environmental Management System (GEMS) committee to actively explore sustainability programs at the facility.
The Lebanon VAMC is one of 170 medical centers in the nation with the sole purpose of providing medical care to America’s veterans. Veterans who may be eligible to receive care and benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs may call 717-228-6000 to learn more.
For more information about the Lebanon VAMC, visit www .lebanon.va.gov, www.facebook .com/VALebanon or www.twitter .com/VALebanon.
The banquet included remarks from Vista’s CEO, Nze Obinelo, as well as a parent who spoke about her family’s journey with Vista, prize drawings for close to 20 items donated by local businesses and members of the community, and awards presented to the best and most notable players at this year’s event.
A total of $59,100 was raised through the 2023 Golf Classic. Proceeds from the event will be used to expand and strengthen current Vista
programs, bridge service gaps, improve facilities, and more, all benefiting children and adults with autism throughout central Pennsylvania.
Headquartered in Hershey, Vista provides an array of specialized services to clients. Its flagship program, the Vista School, is a licensed, approved private school providing educationally integrated behavioral services to students ages 5 to 21 and transition services to students nearing graduation. Crystal Pools Inc., which has its main location in Conewago Township, Dauphin County, and locations in Lancaster and Mechanicsburg, has been named by Pool and Spa News as one of the Top 50 pool and spa builders in the United States. The announcement was made in the June publication of Pool and Spa News.
Although revenue served as a concrete indicator of each company’s performance, it was not the only sign for selection, according to Pool and Spa News. The builders were chosen for per-
formance in all aspects of the pool and spa construction business in 2023.
The selections were based on five aspects of the business: residential construction revenue, management and training practices, internet presence, industry participation and community work. Crystal Pools was highlighted as one of the top 10 for staff management, which, according to Pool and Spa News, was one of the most influential scores.
