Partnership Promotes Safe Medication Disposal Rite Aid and The Rite Aid Foundation have announced that more than 550 medication disposal units across the nation are now searchable on Google Maps, making it easier for people to safely dispose of unneeded or unwanted medications. To find a safe medication disposal unit in a Rite Aid store or a KidCents Safe Medication Disposal Unit in a local police station or law enforcement agency, users can search on Google (including Google Maps on a browser or mobile device) for “medication disposal near me.” Google will show results with the closest Rite Aid medication disposal units for people to safely dispose of their unwanted prescription drugs. The partnership with Google is one of several initiatives Rite Aid has implemented as part of its comprehensive strategy to address prescription drug abuse and misuse. In 2017, The Rite Aid Foundation launched the KidCents Safe Medication Disposal program. The program provides law enforcement agencies in communities served by Rite Aid with free medication disposal units for individuals to safely dispose of expired or unwanted medications. Since its launch, the program has expanded to 18 states. To date, the foundation has partnered with more than 400 law enforcement agencies to make more than 450 units available to customers and communities. In 2018, Rite Aid announced plans to install 100 medication disposal units in stores across the country. In addition to medication disposal units, The Rite Aid Foundation’s KidCents program has made a multi-year commitment to the Prescription Drug Safety program, a digital course about

prescription drug abuse prevention. Developed by EVERFI, the course uses an evidence-based public health approach to empower high school students with the skills and knowledge they need to make safe and healthy decisions about prescription drugs and prevent abuse before it occurs. As a result of The Rite Aid Foundation’s commitment, the Prescription Drug Safety program will be made available to more than 400 high schools in California, Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington at no cost. Rite Aid also has several in-store initiatives to help address the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse and misuse. Rite Aid offers DisposeRx packets at all its pharmacies. DisposeRx packets contain a biodegradable powder that, when mixed with water in the prescription vial, dissolves drugs, forming a viscous gel that may be safely discarded in the trash. Rite Aid pharmacists also strive to collaborate on appropriate pain management therapy decisions with patients’ prescribers. All patients with new opioid prescriptions receive required counseling on their prescriptions. Rite Aid also participates in prescription drug monitoring programs and provides ongoing education and training about prescription drug misuse and abuse to its more than 5,000 pharmacists. Additionally, naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal medication, is now available in all Rite Aid pharmacies without a prescription. For more information on the KidCents program, readers may visit www.kidcents.com. Additional information about Rite Aid can be found at www.riteaid.com.

College Plans Lecture Events For many years, the Department of Humanities at Penn State College of Medicine has sponsored First Fridays. These hourlong monthly events have been presentations on a variety of topics, from race and identity to how autism can be expressed through art. Beginning in the fall, First Fridays will become Humanities Grand Rounds. Grand Rounds are the name used for speaking events hosted by clinical and basic science departments at the College of Medicine. By changing the name to Humanities Grand Rounds, the Department of Humani-

ties is embracing this venerable medical school tradition. The Department of Humanities expects to host speakers quarterly, rather than monthly. Humanities Grand Rounds presentations will be topical, scholarly, and of general interest, and they will highlight the contribution of the humanities to medicine and health. All Humanities Grand Rounds will be open to the public. For more information, readers may contact the Department of Humanities at 717-531-8779.

Mandes Serves As Judge Of Baby Parade Seventy years ago in 1949, Traditions of Hershey resident Barbara Lou (Miller) Mandes graced the stage of the band shell at Lititz Springs Park during the annual Fourth of July celebration when she was crowned Queen of the Candles. The former queen and Lititz High School alumna visited the park again during the Fourth of July celebration this year - this time

serving as a guest judge for the Lititz Woman’s Club Baby Parade. During the parade, children from birth through 6 years old walked or rolled by in strollers and wagons with patriotism and hometown pride themes. Before the parade began, Mandes addressed the crowd, and later she announced the winners, who were awarded prizes

for first, second and third place. Traditions of Hershey is located at 100 N. Larkspur Drive, Palmyra. For information about the community, readers may call Marisa Williams, marketing director, at 717-838-2330 or visit www.traditions ofhershey.com.
