Taylor, who was an approved host for foreign students, was asked to house Max after he completed his semester at Hampton. “Max’s dad wanted to get Max out of Ukraine. Ukrainian males ages 18 to 64 can be drafted into the army,” Taylor explained, noting that Max will turn 18 on Monday, Aug. 22. “Max found Hampton online, which offered any Ukrainian student free tuition, room and board for its summer session. They needed hosts) after the summer school was over for four to six weeks until (the students went) to their next place.” Student pg

Despite a harrowing car ride from Ukraine to an airport in Poland, ticketing issues, an 18-hour delay in Iceland and sporadic cellphone service, 17-year-old Maksym “Max” Lyshchuk, a Ukrainian college student, eventually made his way to the United States, all while traveling alone. Max, who attended Hampton University in Virginia this summer, is now residing with Kathy Taylor and her family in Hershey. Later this month, he will begin attending classes at Lebanon Valley College in Annville.

CocoaKitties, a Hershey-based nonprofit cat rescue, has a cute name and a clear mission - to find permanent homes for unwanted and abandoned cats and kittens.Thenew rescue was founded by Kendra Daub, who has been volunteering with rescue groups for 28 years. “I joined a rescue based out of Virginia called Operation Paws for Homes, (which started) in 2010. (The rescued pets) came from Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, and they do a lot of pulling from Southern shelters,” she explained. “They were a dog rescue, but in 2017, they allowed me to start a cat program for them. I have a lot of experience doing this.” Daub decided to start her own rescue by utilizing foster homes to shelter and care for cats and kittens until they are adopted. “This past April, I went out on my own to help more locally,” she said. “Fosters are friends and friends of friends. We probably have about 10 to 12 foster homes. I personally am fostering 23 kittens. (Cats have) litters of kittens, so every foster has several.” She noted that some of the rescued kittens come from Derry Township Community Cats, which offers trap/neuter/return (TNR) and vaccination services for outdoor stray cats. “I partner with Derry Township Community Cats. Sometimes they come upon kitties, so I will take them,” Daub said. “Our town is my No. 1 priority, but a lot of kitties come from TNR programs. Occasionally, we will take older surrenders if we haveCocoaKittiesroom.” is in need of volunteers and additional fosters to help care for the incoming kittens, as well as adopters to provide loving homes for the cats and kittens in need. “We investigate (potential adopters). We talk to their vet and check references,” Daub said. The rescue is also in need of supplies, including dry food, wet food, paper towels and kitty litter. Monetary donations are also needed to pay for the cats’ medical expenses. Daub reported that since the organization’s formation in April, there have been 33 adoptions. Right now, more than 90 cats and kittens are being fostered by volunteers. “We will grow as we add fosters. We can only take on what we have people available to take on,” she said. “We have a half a dozen to a dozen calls a day to take animals. Currently, we can’t,” she said. “We have some medical cases, (including) a sick orange adult kitty that we just got in and a kitty that had heatstroke. We are a foster-base rescue, but we would like to have a building someday.” For more information about CocoaKitties, to donate or to view adoptable cats and kittens, kendra@cocoakitties.org.unteeringThoseCatRescuewww.facebook.com/CocoaKittiesvisitorwww.cocoakitties.org.interestedinfosteringorvol-maycontactDaubat
Hummelstown Historical Society has unveiled a new exhibit, “Take It to the Bank,” in the History House, 32 W. Main St. The exhibit is open on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. The exhibit was inspired by the donation of the Spire Safe by Nancy Chubb. The safe is from the original Spire Electric store on Main Street. Upon the retirement of Henry Spire, ownership transferred to Harold Chubb, but he kept the store’s name.

Max recalled a phone call from his grandfather when he was still in Ukraine that would forever change his life. “I woke up at 6 a.m. and my grandfather said the war started,” Max said. “We packed some documents and some clothes because (he said) we are going to his house at the edge of the city, and I was not understanding what was going on.” After being joined by his parents and 6-year-old brother, Max and his family spent a lot of time in the basement of his grandfather’s home because of the air raid sirens going off in the neighborhood. He also recalled hearing missiles striking sites nearby. “After we moved back to our flat in April, we (learned) that Hampton offered a program (for) Ukrainians and my dad said he would try to get me there for summer to study,” Max said. “On June 6, we got the answer that I wasByaccepted.”working with the United States Embassy in Poland, Max was able to travel to the United States after a stop in Iceland. Christ Church United Church of Christ (UCC), 200 S. White Oak St., Annville, will present a free “Concert Under the Trees” on Sunday, Aug. 21, at 3 p.m. The concert will feature the Washington Band of Annville under the direction of Michael Yeagley. Attendees are asked to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on to view the concert. The Cheezy Grill and Paul and Charlie’s Italian Sandwich food trucks will be available from 2 to 5 p.m. In August 1856, nine men from Annville organized a band consisting entirely of cornets. This fledgling “cornet band,” under the leadership of John Henning, rehearsed in the tavern at the west end of town, known then as the Washington House. Hence, the Washington Cornet Band of Annville got its name. The Washington Band of Annville continues to provide music from patriotic marches to Broadway and movie-themed music for audiences in Annville and the surrounding communities. The band plays annually at the Annville Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, the Annville Memorial Day Parade, Olde Annville Days, the Rocherty Church Picnic and other events. For more information, call the church office at 717-8671641 or search for “Christ Church United Church of Christ” on Facebook.

Several years ago, Navy veteran Bill Terry wore his Navy cap to a rally in Gettysburg. Someone took note of his service and asked if he went to the monthly veterans breakfast in Gettysburg. “I had never heard of it or been there,” said Terry. Not long after that conversation, Terry made the hourand-45-minute trip to Gettysburg to attend a breakfast. “(The veterans) had been meeting 12 to 15 years,” reported Terry. “I thought, ‘We don’t have anything like this in Lancaster.’”Terrydecided to start a group locally, so he drove from Gettysburg to the Lyndon Diner in Lancaster. “I told (representatives of the Lyndon Diner) what I wanted to do, and they offered the back room,” said Terry, who noted that at first attendees ordered off the menu. “For the first meeting, 23 showed up,” said Terry, who added that three of those still attend. The Vets Breakfast Club now meets on the third Saturday of each month at the Bird-inHand Family Restaurant and Smorgasbord, 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird in Hand. Due to a conflict, the meeting on Saturday, Sept. 17, will be held at Westlake Village, 2001 Harrisburg
“We always have the POW table set up and nobody sits there,” said Terry of the traditional table set with a white tablecloth, a single candle, an inverted glass, and a single red rose in a Currently, vase. Terry said, two benefactors are covering breakfast for the veterans, but he noted that sponsorships are welcome.
