Golf event to benefit housing aid program

Off the Streets Middletown will hold its inaugural golf tournament at Sunset Golf Course, 2601 Sunset Drive, Middletown, on Friday, Sept. 6. Off the Streets is a national organization that help people experiencing homelessness to secure permanent housing. The local chapter serves Middletown and the surrounding communities in Dauphin County. In the all-volunteer chapter’s first year - beginning in May 2023 - it partnered with county agencies

to provide assistance to more than 40 families throughout the county.

Off the Streets works with social service agencies to identify individuals and families that have the financial means to pay monthly rent but may need assistance with up-front money for a security deposit. Off the Streets provides the security deposit directly to the landlord.

Many people experiencing homelessness have lost most, if not all, their material goods. To help settle these people into their new homes, Off the Streets helps to provide the basics, including beds, dressers, chairs, tables, bedding, and kitchen ware. Most of these items are donated. Off the Streets also provides volunteers to help with the moves.

Community partners include Middletown Interfaith Council, Shalom House, HELP Ministries,

All proceeds from the Blood, Sweat, and Tears Run will benefit the Emily Whitehead Foundation. The central Pennsylvania-based organization is named after Emily Whitehead, who in 2012 became the first child to be treated for cancer using her own re-engineered T cells to fight her leukemia. This highly experimental treatment for Whitehead’s leukemia saved her life, and with the help of the foundation, it has received FDA approval and is now used around the world to help save the lives of both children and adults. The foundation continues to fund new and emerging advanced therapies in the fight against pediatric cancer.

Whitehead just finished her first year at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and she continues to attend medical conferences to share her

story and inspire others. Her story is told in the documentary “Of Medicine and Miracles” by Academy Award-winning director Ross Kauffman, and she is featured in the new IMAX documentary “Superhuman Body,” narrated by Matthew McConaughey.

Once again this year, the Blood, Sweat, and Tears Run is dedicated to the memory of Mike McCauley, an ultramarathon runner who was passionate about ending pediatric cancer.

Online registration will be available through Saturday, Sept. 7, and T-shirts and fanny packs are guaranteed for those who register by this date. Registrations will be accepted on the day of the event, with T-shirts available while supplies last.

For more information and to register, visit the aforementioned website. Information is also available by searching for “Blood, Sweat & Tears Run” on Facebook. Sponsorships are available; for more details, email tgarrett7@ msn.com.

Gretna Music will present concerts by Concordian Dawn on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 7:30 p.m.; the Tesla Quartet with pianist Joel Fan on Sunday, Sept. 1, at 3 p.m.; and the Manhattan Chamber Players on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 3 p.m. The concerts will be held at the Mt. Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna.

Each concert will be preceded by a First Listen program. The series offers free, 20-minute mini concerts by students. On Aug. 25, oboist Lydia You will present a mini concert at 6:45 p.m., and doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The other two First Listen programs will be held at 2:15 p.m. with doors opening at 2 p.m.; the performers will be violinist Mio Amai on Sept. 1 and cellist Isabel Morales on Sept. 7.

Concordian Dawn specializes in 12th-century through 14th-century vocal repertoire.

The Tesla Quartet and Joel Fan will perform String Quartet No. 4 by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz; Quintet for Piano and Strings by Sophia Gubaidulina, which pays homage to Dmitri

Shostakovich; and Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G Minor, a five-movement work.

The Manhattan Chamber Players’ program will feature Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring.” The group will also perform three other works: “Adagio” by Samuel Barber, “Ciaccona (Clarinet Quintet)” by Chris Rogerson, and Piano Quintet by Andrea Casarrubios.

The Tesla Quartet consists of Ross Snyder and Michelle Lie on violin, Edwin Kaplan on viola, and Austin Fisher on cello. The group’s ever-expanding repertoire ranges from contemporary works to established

masterpieces. The quartet seeks to amplify underrepresented voices and to encourage the proliferation of an equitable and just future for society as well as a hospitable climate for posterity.

Fan is known for his virtuosity and his wide-ranging repertoire that embraces piano classics along with contemporary and world music. He has made numerous recordings.

The Manhattan Chamber Players is a chamber music collective of New Yorkbased musicians who share the common aim of performing the greatest works in the chamber repertoire at the highest level. Formed

by founding artistic director Luke Fleming, the group includes musicians who come from the tradition of music making at the Marlboro Music Festival, Steans Institute at Ravinia, Music@Menlo, Yellow Barn and Kneisel Hall chamber music festivals, and Perlman Music Program. Stepp named to dean’s list

Kameron Stepp of Hummelstown was named to the Milwaukee School of Engineering’s dean’s list for the spring semester. Stepp is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in software engineering.

Students who are taking undergraduate courses, have earned at least 12 credits in residence at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, are in good academic standing, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or greater are included on the dean’s list.

First, parents should get their children involved. Have children make a list of their favorite foods from each food group - starch, protein, vegetable, fruit, and dairy - and get them excited by bringing them to the store to shop for their favorites. Together, parents and children can build a balanced lunch, making sure children have one item from each of the five food groups. Ideas for a balanced lunchbox include English muffins, sliced ham, carrots, strawberries, a cheese stick, wheat crackers, hummus, sugar snap peas, clementines and nonfat Greek yogurt.

Second, lunches should contain protein. Protein helps keep stomachs full and minds focused. When thinking about breakfast, lunch and snacks, include quick and easy foods like lunch meat, cheese, nut butters, Greek yogurt or hard-boiled eggs.

The third tip is to get colorful. Colorful fruits and vegetables provide a variety of nutrients. Entice kids with daily color challenges to encourage produce variety. For example, Monday’s lunch can focus on red foods, Tuesday’s meal can feature orange foods, and so on.

Fourth, parents should

stock convenience items. Be prepared with pre-sliced apple packs, granola bars, applesauce pouches and trail mixes available for grab-and-go after-school snacks, and load up on frozen waffles and pancakes, fruit cups, oatmeal pouches and drinkable yogurts for easy breakfasts.

The fifth tip is to make

dinner easy. Balanced dinners do not have to be elaborate. Keep it simple on busy weeknights with tried-and-true winners like breakfast for dinner or sandwiches with no-cook sides.

Giant’s dietitians also offer easy meal and snack ideas and recipes, simplified with five or fewer ingre -

dients, at www.giantfood stores.com/pages/back-to -school-dietitian-picks. To check out the latest schedule of Giant’s free, virtual dietitian classes, which include making dinner in under 30 minutes, creating produce-packed snacks and learning about simple lunchbox ideas, visit www.giant foodstores.com/wellness.
