Hope Within Ministries’ fifth annual Golf for Hope tournament is set to take place on Friday, Sept. 21, at Deer Valley Golf Course, 101 Stoudt Road, Hummelstown. “It’s a beautifully scenic course. Golfers of all skill levels really seem to like it,” said Donita Sturgis, president and co-founder of Hope Within Ministries. Sturgis noted that one of the reasons that Hope Within hosts its event at the course each year is the excellent job that course manager Bill Wall does in running the tournament effectively. “The golfers really appreciate how well it is run,” Sturgis said. The tournament will feature a four-person scramble format. Registration will open at 12:30 p.m., and play will commence at 1:30 p.m. with a shotgun start. Participation is limited to the first 120 golfers. To register in advance as a single player or a team, interested individuals may email chelsea.bright@hopewithin.org; call 717-367-9797, ext. 303; or visit www.hopewithin.org and click on the Events tab. purchase three mulligans for a nominal fee. A post-tournament catered meal and brief awards ceremony are set to begin at approximately 5:30 p.m. Individuals who would like to support Hope Within but forego the golf competition are welcome to sign up for the dinner only. Attendees may bid on a variety of silent auction items, including gift baskets and gift cards to area businesses and attractions. “We’re really trying to put together a unique selection of things that appeal to men and women, families, and athletes,” noted Sturgis. All proceeds from the event will benefit Hope Within Ministries, which operates a community health center at 4748 E. Harrisburg Pike, Elizabethtown. The faith-based center provides free primary health care to medically uninsured individuals from Lancaster, Dauphin, and Lebanon counties, as well as lowcost mental health counseling services.

Sturgis said that the organization’s counseling center has been booming and additional funds are needed to continue serving the increasing number of people seeking services. Mental health counseling is provided on a self-pay, income-based sliding scale fee with no other eligibility requirements. Hope Within staff and intern therapists offer a scope of therapeutic services, including individual, couple, family, premarital, and marital therapy. Hope Within is in the process of partnering with two area colleges that offer master’s-level counseling programs in order to obtain more counselors and be able to expand and accept more individuals who are in need of mental health services. “We want to be a place of early access to help,” explained Sturgis. “The wait can be long to access care. Time and cost are significant barriers, and we want to remove those and save lives.” To learn more about Hope Within, readers may visit www.hopewithin.org or call 717367-9797.

The team members of Brittany’s Hope are thrilled to have an honored guest who has traveled all the way from Texas to train for and attend the 14th annual Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. Dolly, one of the newest miniature ponies to reside in the Shepherd’s Staff Petting Zoo at the Star Barn Village at Stone Gables Estate, has already begun training with caretaker and international award-winning trainer Carl O’Callaghan. Dolly will run the 5K race pulling a cart with her trainer on board to help raise funds for Brittany’s Hope. “Dolly trains five days a week, so she’s pretty fit. We’re very fortunate because we’re here, so we can do the course a few times before the event, O’Callaghan said. Brittany’s Hope is an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit organization committed to aiding orphans in crisis and helping special needs children to be adopted into forever families. Brittany’s Hope provides grants to families that are in the process of adopting and has implemented programs in Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Kenya that provide holistic care directly to orphans. Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope, said that the organization has set a fundraising goal of $65,000 for this year’s event. That amount would enable Brittany’s Hope to provide adoption grants for seven children with special needs or help with the construction of a much-needed living residence for up to 28 orphaned children with disabilities in a rural and remote area of northern Vietnam. Sahd said the new residence will provide safe, modern, clean living space and bedrooms and feature adaptive furniture and bathrooms to enable the children to gain independence. A physical therapy room and common area for the children are also planned, and the residence will be staffed by trained professionals who can provide 24/7 medical care and help the youths to develop basic living skills. The Walk of Love, a fun-filled,

8:30 a.m., and the 5K will begin with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Runners will follow a new route through Stone Gables Estate, with the start and finish lines located beside the recently relocated and restored Star Barn and its outbuildings. The 5K will be chip-timed, and participants will cover ground on rolling wooded trails, bridges, and historic railroad tracks. The fun walk - a short, noncompetitive loop through the woods and manicured grounds of Stone Gables Estate - will begin at 10:10 a.m. A post-race lunch and brief awards ceremony will begin at approximately 11 a.m. Giveaway winners will also be announced at that time. Awards will be given to the top three overall 5K finishers and to the top three male and female 5K finishers in each age group. The single top overall runner will receive a cash prize. Lebanon Valley College (LVC) students received grants toward collaborative research with faculty, immersive internships in their field, and independent scholarly projects. Local students receiving a grant include Denis Halilovic of Palmyra, a graduate of Palmyra Area High School. Halilovic is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in computer and data science and mathematics at LVC. Halilovic is working with Dr. Robert Machado on interdisciplinary research, which develops a new process for analyzing how color is used in verbal and visual texts. Together, they hope to develop a process and digital tools that will allow scholars at every level, including undergraduate students, to conduct research on color in new ways that might make possible new solutions to social divisions.

Hope Springs Farm Sets Barn Raising Hope Springs Farm, 201 Trail Road, Hershey, provides a day program for adults who have developmental disabilities and autism, who are called Growers. On April 23, an overnight fire destroyed the Hope Springs barn and took the lives of its mini horses, Bunny and Brownie, as well as two rabbits and a couple dozen new chicks. Marigold, a teacup pig, pushed out of her stall; most of the ducks flew away; and the barn cats escaped but reappeared when everything calmed down. The farm is recovering from the fire. Over the two weeks fol-

lowing the fire, the farm held several events so that the Growers and staff could process their grief. Another farm has donated two miniature horses to replace Bunny and Brownie, and a barn raising is slated for Tuesday, Sept. 4. Local builders, including some from the Mennonite community, will come to Hope Springs Farm for the old-fashioned barn raising in the old barn footprint. The event will begin in the morning and will continue all day and possibly extend to the following day. Members of the community are invited to stop by

5K RUN/WALK TO

and see the new barn being built. The idea for Hope Springs Farm began years ago, when Harrisburg resident Nina Rovner saw a television segment about a New York couple that bought a working farm in Tennessee to keep their developmentally disabled daughter, who was aging out of high school, busy and happy. Nina knew then that this would be the answer for her then-12-year-old developmentally disabled daughter, Mimi, when she aged out of her school. After much research, Nina and her husband, Neil, purchased a working family farm in Hershey not just for Mimi but for other adults with intellectual disabilities. Neil named it Hope Springs Farm, and it opened in 2005. Today, the farm, featuring alpacas, chickens, sheep, horses, goats, and pigs, operates at full capacity, with more than 50

adults from all over the HersheyHarrisburg area enrolled in its day program. The farm’s goal has been to provide adults who have developmental disabilities and autism a day program to maximize their abilities. A total of 38 Growers attend the program every day, and about 30 staff members are employed at the farm. Growers feed and clean the animals, plant and water gardens, do crafts, take classes, and harvest their flowers and vegetables. Growers also go out into the community to participate in volunteer programs such as Meals on Wheels. They make nursing home visits, take field trips, and shop for the supplies needed for the animals or the crafts. To learn more, readers may call 717-298-1845 or visit www.HopeSpringsFarm.org.

Agency Marks Lionettes Will Meet 40th Year This year, SpiriTrust Lutheran Home Care and Hospice celebrates 40 years of providing health care and related services in the comfort of home. The agency started in 1978 when the state of Pennsylvania mandated that state health nurses could no longer do community home nursing visits. SpiriTrust Lutheran (then known as Lutheran Social Services) already had a homemaker program in Franklin County and rose to the challenge of filling the gap by providing home health care in the community. In 40 years, the agency has grown from fewer than 10 employees to more than 400 and from serving one county in Pennsylvania to now serving 18 counties in Pennsylvania and three counties in Maryland. In 1978, the agency started by providing home nursing services. Over the years, the agency has added physical, occupational, and speech therapies and social work services to its home health program. It has also added other programs such as hospice, palliative care, home health telemonitoring, and non-medical home care. To learn more, readers may visit www.lutheran homecare.org.

The Londonderry Lionettes will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. at Londonderry Elementary School, 260 Schoolhouse Road, Middletown. Dr. Richard Ammon, professor emeritus at Penn State, will present “Amish Talk.” Ammon has authored several books about the Amish, including works that cover how Plain families spend their days, entertainment, speech, and the way the seasons direct Amish activities. Refreshments will feature Pennsylvania Dutch food. For more information, readers may call Louise at 717-944-6518.

Geisinger Holy Spirit will host a multi-day Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) training in September. The training will be held from Wednesday, Sept. 5, through Friday, Sept. 7, and from Monday, Sept. 10, through Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Radisson Hotel Harrisburg, 1150 Camp Hill Bypass, Camp Hill. The course is designed for registered nurses who will care for adult, adolescent, and pediatric patients who have experienced sexual assault. The training uses evidencebased standards of forensic nursing practice, ensuring that all patients reporting sexual violence and victimization receive competent evaluation that considers developmental, cultural, racial, ethnic, sexual, and socioeconomic diversity. This course prepares nurses for SANE certification and awards 64 credits. There is a cost to attend per person. Attendance for the full six days of training is required to receive certification. For a full training schedule and to register, readers may visit www.go.geisinger.org/SANE18.

Londonderry Township Boy Scout Troop 97 recently took a High Adventure camping, canoeing, and fishing trip to Ontario, Canada. Upon their arrival in Minnesota, the troop visited the Mall of America to eat and take a stroll after sitting on the long flight. The group then learned about the history of Minneapolis during a tour of the Mill City Museum. The Scouts also viewed waterfalls. After touring the local sights, the Scouts spent their first night at Blue Sky Adventure Base Camp in Minneapolis. The evening included a pizza party, rock wall climbing, sporting events, and a movie. The next morning, the group departed at 7 a.m. to travel seven hours by van to the next base camp in Atikokan, Ontario. The town serves as one of the main entry points into Quetico Provincial Park. The group of 16 troop members split into two crews, each with its own interpreter. One crew planned to take the Call of the Loon 60-mile trek through lakes and woods, while the other crew planned to take the Chrysemys Picta 51-mile trek on riverways with picturesque waterfalls. The groups became familiar with their maps, charted their courses, were

One crew came across a 1944 prisonerof-war camp that housed German prisoners during World War II. The Scouts also paddled onto the shores at White Otter Castle, a home built by woodsman Jimmy McQuat. Wildlife was plentiful during the trip. The Scouts spotted bald eagles, loons, bears, and moose. Mosquitoes were abundant. Fishing was a favorite activity, with small mouth bass and northern pike being the primary catch. At the end of the trip, the two groups reunited and shared stories of their canoeing trips. Upcoming adventures for Troop 97 include camping, hiking, and a ghost tour in Gettysburg; a Middletown National Night Out Community Service project; Guppy Gulch High Adventure Waterpark in Delta; and a camping, hiking, and Owen Wealand portaged fishing trip in Poe Paddy State Park through waist-high mud for a in Coburn. Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) at Penn State Children’s Hospital was presented with two national awards at the CMN Hospitals conference in Orlando. For the 10th straight year, the CMN program was awarded the highest fundraising award ($4,667,629) and the highest fundraising per capita award ($2.57) for CMN Hospitals serving a population of between 1 million and 3 million. John Morahan, president and CEO of Penn State Health St. Joseph, was named an Outstanding Community Partner by the Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU). The award is presented to top Berks County leaders who volunteer and advocate for BCIU. Morahan has led the Stop the Bleed program, which teaches bystanders of an

emergency how to stop life-threatening bleeding. Penn State Health St. Joseph provides training and Stop the Bleed kits to all Berks County school districts at no cost. The American Association of Neurological Surgeons presented Dr. Robert Harbaugh with the Distinguished Service Award, one of its highest honors. It recognizes exemplary service to the association and the field of neurosurgery and pays tribute to the contributions of remarkable people within their profession. Pennsylvania Medical Society named five Penn State Health doctors among its top physicians under 40: Dr. Todd Felix, a family physician at Penn State Health Medical Group - Nyes Road; Dr. Benjamin Fogel, who serves as medical director of the largest pediatric primary care center at Penn State Health; Dr. Andrew Lutzkanin III, a family medicine physician with advanced training in obstetrical care at Penn State Health Medical Group - Middletown; Dr. Michael Pfeiffer, a cardiologist at Penn State Heart and Vascular Institute; and Dr. Hyma Polimera, a hospitalist at Penn State Health Milton S. UPMC Pinnacle was one of three state organizations named to receive a PAC-MAT grant to help battle the state’s opioid addiction crisis. With PAC-MAT funding, UPMC Pinnacle will strengthen its current medical-assisted treatment (MAT) and case management services to patients within the health system’s outpatient sites in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties. UPMC Pinnacle Center for Addiction Recovery, 2501 N. Third St., Harrisburg, will serve as the

hub and bring together primary, secondary, and tertiary care providers, as well as community and hospital administration members, to build on an addiction treatment program that increases access to care, reduces health care costs, and improves quality. This will include increasing drug and alcohol screenings within the broader network of providers, creating a Care Map for patients to research care patterns, establishing a community network of case management support, and broadening

the use of MAT throughout the region by breaking down stigmas and barriers to care. In the PAC-MAT model of treatment, an addiction specialist physician is at the center of the hub, providing expert guidance and support to primary care physicians in rural and underserved areas of the state. Serving as the spokes, primary care physicians provide direct patient care, including the medicationassisted treatment prescription. Patients also are connected to drug and alcohol counseling in their communities. These grants are funded through the second 21st Century CURES grant, a $26.5 million federal grant the state received to combat the heroin and opioid epidemic by increasing access to treatment, reducing unmet treatment need, and reducing opioid overdose-related deaths through the provision of prevention, treatment, and recovery activities for substance-use disorder. The UPMC Pinnacle Center for Addiction Recovery is a comprehensive addiction clinic. The center connects individuals facing an opioid use disorder to treatment through the use of medication assisted treatment. For more information, readers may visit www.upmcpinnacle.com.
