Kim Shifler, pastor, the First Church of God was founded by the Rev. John Winebrenner and his followers in 1827. The first church building was completed in 1832 on the east side of Union Street, and services were held there from 1832 to 1873. In 1873, after a wall of the church gave in, the congregation agreed to construct a new building. The second Church of God building was dedicated on Oct. 22, 1876. The new brick church was located on Spring and Water streets, and it featured a bell tower that was 168 feet high. From 1876 to 1949, the congregation continued to grow, and in 1949, the Rev. C. Allen Byler was appointed pastor. He outlined a fiveyear program for the church, which was adopted by the church leaders in November of 1949. In 1951, a dedication was held for the 75th anniversary of the First Church of BetweenGod.1951 and 1963, the congregation envisioned an educational building to be added to the church. However, in March of 1963, the ceiling of the sanctuary collapsed, making it unsafe to hold worship services in the church. The congregation decided to build a new church on a larger site. While the new church was being built, worship services were held in the Presbyterian Church at Union and Water streets and later in the gymnasium of the old high Underschool.theleadership of Dr. C.H. Golfers To Raise Funds For BBBSCR

Two board members from Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region (BBBSCR) will attempt a single-day 144-hole golf challenge, called Golf Fore Kids’ Sake, to support kids across the agency’s five-county service area. Joe Holston and Brian Lorenz will each try to golf 144 holes on Tuesday, Sept. 6, beginning at 6 a.m. and wrapping up in the late afternoon at Manada Golf Club, 609 Golf Lane, Grantville. The purpose of the challenge is to raise funds and recruit volunteers forInBBBSCR.2020, BBBSCR canceled its fundraisers in response to the pandemic but continued to provide support to Bigs, Littles and families in its program as well as to recruit volunteer mentors for youths on the waiting list. Concerned about the gap in the organization’s funding, Holston completed a 100-hole golf challenge, raising over $60,000 for the agency’s programming. This year, fellow board member Lorenz will join Holston for the third Golf Fore Kids’ Sake challenge and has pledged to meet Holston’s goal of golfing 144 holes in one day. Together, they hope to raise $144,000 to sustain and grow BBBSCR’s programs. With 100 kids on its waiting list, BBBSCR is looking for new mentors, called Bigs, to spend a couple hours a month with a child, called a Little. The organization serves more than 500 youths each year, noted BBBSCR CEO Amy Rote. Holston and Lorenz are accepting per-hole pledges, sponsorships and donations to support BBBSCR’s volunteer recruitment efforts and program needs. To volunteer or make a donation, visit www.capbigs.org or text GFKS to 50155. Manada Golf Club has donated the use of its course, so 100% of the golf challenge donations will go directly to Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Rotary Club Installs

CLASSIFIEDSTHEONLINE24/7:

New President Hummelstown Rotary Club’s outgoing president, Ed Antolick (left), passed the gavel to new president Rick Blair when Blair was formally sworn in at the club’s July 13 meeting at Hoss’s Steak & Sea House. Blair will serve a two-year term ending in June 2024. Rick Blair (left) took the oath of office as administered by Hummelstown Mayor Dave Roeting.

1 cup finely chopped onion 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1 28-ounce can peeled Italian tomatoes with basil, drained and chopped, juice reserved (see tip below) 12 fresh basil leaves, or 1 1/4 teaspoons dried 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon salt (see tip below) Directions:1Ina3-quart saucepan, heat the oil, garlic, onion, and red pepper flakes over medium-high heat. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring well. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 10 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes, basil, oregano, and salt. Stir well and cook 5 minutes over medium heat.

2 Add the reserved tomato juice and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Chef’s tips: The best canned tomatoes to use in this sauce are those packed in Italy. American products tend to be too tart. If using American tomatoes, add 1/2 teaspoon sugar when cooking them. This is a basic sauce used mainly to prepare other sauces. If it will be used over pasta, a bit more salt may need to be added, according to one’s taste.

Tomato sauce is a staple in Italian cooking and other cuisines. Many families have special recipes for their own tomato sauces. Homemade tomato sauce adds zest to meals served during leisurely Sunday afternoons featuring pasta and Tomato-basedmeats. sauces have many names among Italians. “Sugo” is a word that broadly defines “sauce,” and can be applied to tomato-based varieties. “Ragú” implies that the sauce was reduced to obtain a more concentrated flavor profile after cooking it for hours. Marinara originated in Naples and means “sailor-style.” It is a classic sugo made from a few simple ingredients. An alternative to simmered sugo is salsa, which is made quickly with pureed tomatoes and does not contain meat or vegetables. It is ideal as a summer dressing for pasta and does not need to be cooked for long. It is relatively easy to make homemade tomato sauce. The freshness of homemade sauce cannot be replicated - especially if the sugo is made with tomatoes plucked from a backyard garden. For those new to homemade sauce, this recipe for Sugo di Pomodoro from “Nick Stellino’s Family Kitchen” (G.P Putnam’s Sons) is a fine place to start. Sugo di (TomatoPomodoroSauce) (Makes 5 1/2 cups) Ingredients:6tablespoons olive oil 6 whole garlic cloves, peeled

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful received a $40,000 Coastal Zone Grant from the DEP Coastal Resources Management Program to establish the Waterway Steward Program and facilitate cleanups in the Delaware Estuary.

DEP is supporting this innovative program to turn residents who use Pennsylvania’s streams, rivers, and lakes into stewards of these waters, helping to document and reduce the trash pollution that threatens water quality for people and aquatic life.

Making Homemade Tomato Sauce

3 When the sauce has finished cooking, let it cool to room temperature, and then process to a smooth consistency in a food processor. The color may change slightly in the processor; this is normal and will not affect the flavor. The sauce can be frozen for up to a month.

DEP and other state agencies are working with KPB to foster littering prevention and litter reduction initiatives through a statewide Litter Action Plan. Being a waterway steward involves collecting litter and stream health data when the steward is recreating in or near water. When they are finished, they can dispose of the litter properly and report the data collected to KPB. Stewards can choose where they want to clean, and it can be a different waterway each time. The Waterway Steward program is geared toward water trail users, anglers, outdoor and waterway enthusiasts, and all those who care about the Steward Program

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful (KPB), with funding from the Department of Environmental Protection’s Coastal Resources Management, has announced its new Waterway Steward Program, developed with funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The program’s purpose is to engage Pennsylvania water trail users in community science and build long-term stewardship of water trails while providing valuable data to tell the story about litter in and along Pennsylvania’s waterways.
