Old-fashioned fun for the whole family

“This is a great opportunity to bring the community together and let people know how things used to be done,” said Ron Bernhard, describing Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days. The festivities will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, and Sunday, Sept. 17, at Conoy Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge. The Conoy Lions Club will serve breakfast beginning at 7 a.m. both days. Opening ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

This is the 25th annual event, which features machinery exhibits, craft vendors, demonstrations and more.

A fishing derby for children age 15 and under will be held following the opening ceremonies each morning. Participants should bring their own bait and rod. A tractor parade will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday and at noon on Sunday. On Sunday morning, an interdenominational church service will be held from 9 to 10 a.m.

Live entertainment will include a performance by a

bluegrass band, beginning about 10 a.m. on Saturday. A benefit auction will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, featuring household goods, antiques, baked goods and more. Proceeds from the auction will be used to fund future Old-Fashioned Field Days.

“We have a lot of demonstrations going on throughout the whole event,” said Tonya Bernhard, who is on the event committee with Ron. Demonstrations will include corn shelling and corn grinding, shingle sawing and apple cider making. A chainsaw carving demonstration will also be held.

A variety of antique walkbehind garden tractors will be on display, along with other lawn and garden equipment. Revolutionary War and Civil War re-enactors will be onsite as well. Local churches and nonprofit groups will set up stands, with food options including homemade ice cream, homemade apple dumplings, hot dogs, french fries and soup.

“This event is very familyoriented, and we have a lot of kids’ activities,” Ron noted, adding that barrel train rides and a hayride to a pumpkin patch will be offered.

Vietnam Round Table to meet

The Central Pennsylvania Vietnam Round Table will meet on Thursday, Sept. 14, at Vietnam Veterans of America, Michael J. Novosel MOH Capital Chapter 542, 8000 Derry St., Harrisburg, at 7:30 p.m. Following a brief business meeting, Rick Olson from Mechanicsburg, and retired Col. Forrest “Dutch” Kissinger from Carlisle, will discuss their experiences with the 366th Tactical Fighter Wing (Gunfighters), which was stationed in Danang, during 1968 and 1969. Olson was a bomb loader for Kissinger’s plane during part of his tour.

After attending one semester of college, Olson enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Vietnam from June 1968 to June 1969. After his service in Vietnam, he eventually graduated from the University of Wisconsin with bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and he received a commission as an Army air defense artillery officer. He served seven more years and then left the Army for a 30year career with IBM as a project manager and consultant. For over 11 years, he has been helping veterans as the VFW commander in Carlisle.

Kissinger enlisted on June 1, 1944, just before D-Day, and served through August 1980. He served during the Korean War, eventually becoming a fighter interceptor pilot and served in Vietnam from December 1968 to December 1969. Afterward, he worked in the Pentagon, trained Air Force pilots, spent four years working with inter-

continental missiles and attended the Army War College in Carlisle.

The meeting is open to the public. Donations will be accepted. For additional information, contact Richard Burton at 717-545-2336 or centralpavietnamrt@verizon.net.

event and stay all day, Tonya said, encouraging people to bring chairs to sit on while listening to the music or watching demonstrations.

She emphasized that Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days, which is hosted by the Conoy Lions Club, would not be possible without the support of the community and a team of volunteers.

“It’s just a really fun community event,” she stated. “It’s a nice way to bring everybody together.”

For more information on the event, search for “Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days” on Facebook.

Engaging hobbies for seniors

The value of hobbies is undeniable. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology found that employees who engaged in creative hobbies outside of work were more creative on work projects and had a better attitude on the job. A separate study published in Psychosomatic Medicine in 2009 reported that individuals who engaged in enjoyable leisure

activities had lower blood pressure and a smaller waist circumference.

The beneficial nature of hobbies is good news for seniors, many of whom have ample time for leisure activities. Whether seniors are retired or still working but don’t have the responsibilities of parenting, the following are some fun and engaging hobbies to fill that free time.

- Cooking: Years spent hus-

tling and bustling through the daily grind of personal and professional obligations might have forced individuals to focus on cooking that emphasized convenience over culinary skill. With more free time, seniors can look to cooking classes or take the self-taught route and purchase a new cookbook filled with delicious recipes. A wellcooked homemade meal can provide a sense of accomplishment and afford seniors an opportunity to control the ingredients in the foods they eat, which can be important for individuals with healthrelated dietary restrictions.

- Writing: Many individuals have penned their mem-

oirs after notable careers and lives. While individuals needn’t make their memoirs public, writing can be a great way for seniors to document their own lives and the lives of their family members. Interest in genealogy has risen considerably in recent years, as easily accessible websites like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com have made it easier than ever for individuals to learn about their roots. Seniors can contextualize the information provided by genealogy websites by writing about their personal experiences and sharing what they know about the lives of their parents,

siblings, grandparents, and other family members.

- Gardening: Seniors looking for hobbies that get them out in the great outdoors need look no further than their own backyards. Gardening can benefit the body in myriad ways. According to the Mayo Clinic Health System (MCHS), gardening has the potential to burn as many calories as working out in the gym. In addition, the MCHS notes that individuals who grow their own fruits and vegetables are more likely to include those foods in their own diets, thus saving them money at the grocery store and also increasing their intake of nutrient-rich foods.

How to start a seniors’ social club

Various changes are associated with aging, and these can be physical, mental, and emotional. Although each person manages these changes in his or her own way, there’s no denying that social interaction can benefit people from all walks of life as they navigate their golden years.

The Foundation for Senior Care says socializing can give seniors a sense of purpose, stimulate the mind, relieve boredom, potentially prevent feelings of depression, and give individuals something to look forward to. The senior living center Aston Gardens says socialization provides a

significant boost to the cognitive health of older adults, helping to prevent or delay conditions that can affect memory. Individuals looking to cultivate healthy social interactions may turn to clubs and other groups. If there’s a dearth of opportunities, individuals can start and promote their own social club.

When considering forming a new group, people must decide on the group’s purpose. Social clubs can meet and be organized around any number of themes or interests, such as gardening, crocheting, reading, or other shared hobbies. Friends also may be interested in doing food and beverage sampling. In such instances, a luncheon social club makes sense.

After choosing a theme, conduct a search of groups already meeting within a 50-

mile radius to see if an existing group already meets your criteria. If not, proceed full speed ahead to establish the new club.

People may turn to social media to spread the word about their group. Although traditional methods of communication may still be available, such as posting information in a community bulletin or on a message board at a local house of worship, the internet can sometimes be a speedier messenger. Facebook groups are one way to organize social clubs, as is the website Meetup.com. The latter is a large online network of offline groups that meet all over the country and the world. The website makes it a snap to organize a local group or find an existing club.

Group leaders should also establish consistent meeting times, as most people prefer a

Staying connected

How retirees can engage with their communities

People who are still a part of the workforce usually experience social interaction throughout the day as they collaborate on projects or gather with colleagues for lunch. Even those working remotely likely attend meetings virtually and communicate with co-workers by phone or email.

- Swimming: Swimming is an ideal exercise for seniors, as it’s low-impact but still a great way to utilize the entire body. A 2007 study published in the journal Quality of Life Research found that waterbased exercise improves older adults’ quality of life and decreases disability. A separate study published in 2008 in The Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness found that water-based exercise can improve or help to maintain bone health in postmenopausal women. These are just a few of the many hobbies seniors can pursue as they look for positive and fun ways to spend their free time.

schedule so they can plan their days accordingly. Choose a regular meeting time and place to hold the social club; otherwise, it can be confusing to accommodate everyone. Inconsistency also can make it hard to get the club off the ground.

People forming new clubs are advised to start small and then build. For those new to hosting social clubs, it may be better to begin with only a few members as everyone gets into a groove. As the group becomes more established, it can be opened up to more members, although people may consider capping membership so that the group is more easily managed.

Social clubs are a great way for seniors to stay connected and active. When there isn’t one that meets a person’s interests, he or she may consider starting one.

Without co-workers around, retirees may sometimes find their social lives lacking. People may need to take steps to strengthen their social capital, a term that describes the strength of a person’s social relationships and the extent to which people feel physically and emotionally supported by their communities. Retirees may look to a variety of activities

in the community to keep them connected with others.

- Join a club or group. Individuals can identify an activity they find interesting and determine if there is a way to get involved with it in their community. Senior centers or adult activity providers may sponsor local programs, and libraries often host a variety of club and interest group meetings.

- Participate in worship. Many older adults find they want to reconnect with their faith at this point in their lives, even if attending services wasn’t a top priority earlier in life. Reach out to a local house of worship and find out when services take place and what activities are available.

- Read to children. Seniors can volunteer their services at a library by reading to youngsters. Interacting with other generations can be inspiring.

- Volunteer at a soup kitchen or food pantry. Times continue to be challenging for many people who may find it hard to cover their expenses, and soup kitchens and food pantries can be a saving grace for those who might otherwise miss meals. Volunteering one’s time at these organizations can help make a difference in the lives of community members.

- Become a substitute teacher or paraprofessional. Many schools are experiencing shortages of qualified staff members. Retirees may find a place helping to shape the minds of youngsters by volunteering at schools or taking on part-time jobs in the classroom.

- Become a mentor. Seniors can share their knowledge

and experiences with a student, family member or other community member. Mentors needn’t have an advanced degree or special certification, but they should have more experience in a given field or subject than the mentee. The mentor should ask the mentee about his or her goals and expectations, listen carefully and then respond to the questions and needs of the mentee and adjust the material discussed as necessary to help the mentee meet his or her goals. Sessions should be planned at a time that suits both the mentee and mentor. Mentoring does not only benefit mentees; for mentors, it can keep an aging mind sharp, provide additional meaning and purpose to life and foster social connections.

- Befriend neighbors. A passing greeting may have been the norm when people were busy working, but once people are retired, they may have more opportunities to get to know their neighbors better. Neighbors may even take turns hosting get-togethers. Moving to a retirement or active adult community may facilitate such friendships.

- Volunteer with local government. Retirees may enter a local school board election or try to become a member of the town council.

These are just a few of the many ways that retiree may get involved in their community and maintain strong social ties.

Hikes planned at park

Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will offer two upcoming events. Activities are free and open to the public, but preregistration is required by contacting 717-964-3808 or governordick@hotmail.com and providing a name and phone number in case the program is canceled.

A Photography Hike will be held Saturday, Sept. 9, at 11 a.m. Participants will hike up to the tower and stop along the way to take pictures; they should bring their own cameras. The walk up to the tower is steep and rocky at points.

A fitness hike will be offered on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m. Attendees will take a longer and faster-paced hike, and they should wear proper footwear and bring water.

Titan Gilroy named keynote speaker

Titan Gilroy will be this year’s featured keynote speaker at the MX2023 Manufacturers’ Expo to be held on Thursday, Nov. 9, at the York Expo Center.

Gilroy is CEO and founder of TITANS of CNC. Founded in 2005, the company specializes in manufacturing parts for the medical, subsea and aerospace industries.

Gilroy began his career in manufacturing when he walked away from his professional boxing career and his rough past, including prison time, and found himself in a CNC machine shop where everything in his life changed. He shared his story on the reality series “Titan: American Built,” which was dedicated to American manufacturing. In the third season he went to San Quentin Prison and built an Elite CNC Academy. It was because of this experience that Gilroy developed the free TITANS of CNC Academy curriculum, which is now backed by aerospace companies and industry partners like Kennametal, Mastercam and Mitutoyo, and endorsed by more than 1,000 companies and agencies, including NASA,

Lancaster Kennel Club recognized

Northrop Grumman, Boeing and Disney.

Gilroy will share a message of hope and redemption, along with practical tools for students, educators, shop owners and business leaders.

MX2023 is a manufacturing trade show established to help industries build local supply chains, exhibit capabilities and increase business opportunities and new customers.

For more information about the MX2023 Manufacturers’ Expo, visit www.masc pa.org/expo, call 717-8433891 or email office@masc pa.org. Exhibit spaces are limited, and admission tickets are available for a fee, which includes access to the keynote speaker breakout sessions.

The Lancaster Kennel Club was recently recognized as a Centennial Club by the American Kennel Club, indicating that the club has been in existence for 100 years. Originally formed in 1921 as the Lancaster County Dog Protective Association, the organization became the Lancaster Kennel Club in 1945.

The club’s foundations include responsible dog ownership. The group holds two conformation shows annually. This year’s Agility Trials will be held in Palmyra on Saturday, Sept. 30, and Sunday, Oct. 1, and it is open to the public. On Sunday, Sept. 17, club members and their dogs will participate in the Amos Herr Community Festival, offering demonstrations and

educational activities to promote responsible dog ownership.

Club members and their dogs are also involved with rescuing and rehoming, field trials, lure coursing, agility, obedience, rally, flyball, scent work, and dog breeding. The dogs also serve as family pets.

The Lancaster Kennel Club has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to local veterinary students. The club’s current charitable focus is supporting the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department K-9 unit. General membership meetings take place at the Manheim Township Public Library and are open to the public. For more information, visit www.lancasterkennelclub.org.

Meeting to highlight defense of Culp’s Hill at Gettysburg

The Harrisburg Civil War Round Table will meet on Friday, Sept. 15, at the Central Penn College Conference Center, 600 Valley Road, Summerdale. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a buffet dinner of cider brined pork loin, lemon cod fillet, jasmine rice pilaf, broccoli, mixed field greens, house-made soup du jour, assorted cookies, rolls and butter, iced tea and lemonade will be served at 6:15 p.m. Anyone who wishes to attend the lecture only should arrive by 7 p.m. The lecture will also be broadcast via Zoom.

Dan Welch will discuss the defense of Culp’s Hill on July 2, 1863, by George Sears Greene’s brigade. This lone

Union brigade held the hill in a climactic action against overwhelming odds and repeated attacks by Confederate forces. Welch previously shared this program at this summer’s Sacred Trust lectures in Gettysburg.

Welch served as the education programs coordinator for the Gettysburg Foundation and continues to serve as a seasonal park ranger at Gettysburg National Military Park. He is the editor of Gettysburg Magazine and has been a contributing member at Emerging Civil War for over seven years. He is the coauthor of two works in the Emerging Civil War Series: “The Last Road North: A Guide to the Gettysburg Cam-

The lecture is free. There is a fee for the dinner, payable at the door; however, anyone wishing to attend the dinner should make reservations by Monday, Sept. 11, by contacting Brian Foster at hcwrt.membership@gmail
