MCCS high schoolers will volunteer at food tents, which will be open on both days and feature menu items including hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, walking tacos, snow cones, homemade baked goods, and more. Elizabethtown Grange milkshakes - made with the same ingredients and using the same process as the crowd-pleasers available at the Elizabethtown Fair - will also be for sale. Proceeds from food sales will support the high school classes as they save funds for their respective senior class trip. Proceeds from the auction support the operational expenses of the school as it strives to fulfill its mission to come alongside parents to educate children and youths academically and spiritually. At MCCS, student tuition accounts for 70 percent of the school budget, while fundraising efforts like the auction fill in the rest. The target fundraising goal for this year’s auction is $200,000. Those who want a sneak peek of items that will be up for bids at the auction may visit https://mccs.schoolauction.net/ 2019auction/catalog.

“On the Right Track” designation in two categories, therefore moving closer to becoming a Walk Friendly Community. According to Chuck Emerick, Derry Township community development director, the designation process often takes several years, with the community making adjustments in accordance with feedback from WFC. The experts also continued to compliment several positive community factors, including the successful Walk/Bike to School Days and a well-connected downtown with a growing network of sidewalks. Their future suggestions for continued improvement include a more robust Safe Routes to School program, a Pedestrian Plan, expansion of the pedestrian/bicycle count program, and a focus on encouragement programs, Open Streets events, pedestrian wayfinding, and a safety campaign. More information about the WFC Assessment is available at www.walkfriendly.org/ assessment. To gain more insight on where and how the community feels efforts should be prioritized, the next Derry Township Bike and Pedestrian Alliance meeting is being planned in the fall.
Volunteers from the Partners for Healthy Communities of Central Pennsylvania Coalition Physical Activity Task Force recently submitted Derry Township’s second Walk Friendly Communities (WFC) Assessment. Organizations collaborating on the submission included Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center; multiple Derry Township departments, including Parks and Recreation, Police, Community Development, and Economic Development; Derry Township School District; and several community advocates. According to WFC, improving walkability has many benefits in areas including safety, health, equity, environment, and economy. The WFC experts applauded Derry Township for taking action and implementing several of their initial recommendations, including creating the Derry Township Bike and Pedestrian Alliance to assist staff with identifying safety concerns and planning improvements; collecting data on pedestrian “near misses” in addition to actual crashes; and dedicating part-time hours for a pedestrian and bicycle coordinator. The Falmouth Goat Races are a longstanding tradition that began with a joke. According to Putt-Hower, a group of oldtimers was sitting around the village store discussing life’s misfortunes and bad luck at the horse race track. Each person owned goats as family pets, and someone made a remark that they might as well bet on the goats instead. That was all it took to
spark an idea for Ken Brandt, who got to work placing advertisements for a goat race in Falmouth, listing the phone number of his friend who had made the joke. Still to this day, the Falmouth Goat Races take place on the last Saturday of September, drawing crowds from across the state and beyond. Last autumn, torrential rains and soggy fields caused the Falmouth Civic Assocation to cancel the Falmouth Goat Races for only the second time in nearly four decades, but this year - barring any more severe weather - the goats will be back. The Falmouth Goat Races will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Governor Stable Park, 101 Governor Stable Road, Bainbridge, which is located just off Route 441 in the village of Falmouth. Admission is free, with a nominal fee per vehicle for parking. Festivities will kick off with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m., and the Elizabethtown Area High School pep band will play. Goat races will begin at 11 a.m. and continue throughout the afternoon. Falmouth Civic Association president Nancy Putt-Hower said that as many as 60 goats race each year, with youth and senior divisions for the animal handlers. Individuals are welcome to regis-
ter their goats to race for a nominal fee by filling out a form on the morning of the event. Goats will also be available to rent on the day of the race for those who would like to compete but do not own a goat. Individuals are selected from the crowd to act as judges at the finish line. In addition to the goat races, the event will feature arts and craft stands, children’s barrel train rides, and “cow patty” bingo for adults. Food and beverages, as well as goat-themed merchandise, will be available to purchase. Putt-Hower emphasized that volunteers are still needed to serve in various capacities at this year’s event. Interested individuals may call 717-367-6801. According to Putt-Hower, when the goat races first started, they took place on the baseball field on Governor Stable Road. Today, the location is no longer simply an athletic field but a popular park that the association has been able to enhance with a pavilion, bathrooms, and

Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries and Diakon Child, Family and Community Ministries have released their 2018 community benefit report detailing an overall impact of $21.14 million last year and direct service to nearly 86,500 people. Both figures represent increases, with Diakon’s community benefit for 2017 at $20 million, while the number of people served was slightly more than 77,600. Community benefit involves how a difference is made beyond direct service to people, and it encompasses a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization’s responsibility for improving the overall fabric of society. Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries and Diakon Child, Family and Community Ministries are nonprofit organizations that locally operate Cumberland Crossings at Carlisle; Frey Village in Middletown; Diakon Adoption and Foster Care; Diakon Youth Services, including the Diakon Wilderness Center near Boiling Springs; and Diakon Family Life Services counseling. The organizations’ community benefit includes charitable care provided within Diakon’s senior living communities and its range of child and family services, as well as free public educational sessions, the provision of free meeting space for community groups, and veterans’ assistancerelated education. Regional impact from the local programs, which last year served more than 9,500 people in Cumberland, Dauphin, York, Perry, and surrounding counties, amounted to more than $4.1 million in 2018. Quantification of community benefit was done in accordance with national guidelines developed by the Catholic Health Association of the United States. For more information, readers may contact William Swanger at swangerb@diakon.org or 717795-0308.

The board of trustees of Dauphin County Library System recently announced that it has acquired the property immediately adjacent to the McCormick Riverfront Library in downtown Harrisburg. This property, which was once part of the same parcel as the land now occupied by the library, features a three-story, federal-style building that is of historic significance to the city, having been the home of several governors, including John Andrew Shulze. The building is also historically significant to the library, as it was once the home of the library’s original benefactor, Sara Haldeman Haly. Haly bequeathed a sizable financial gift and the garden portion of her property to build the original Harrisburg Public Library building that is now the McCormick Riverfront Library. Plans currently being developed for the property at 27 N. Front St. would provide expanded space in the library building for children’s and family activities, including science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and arts-related programming, as well as additional space to support the library’s growing partnerships with community organizations such as Dauphin County Human Services and Harrisburg University. In addition, it will allow for the restoration and preservation of a historic landmark and could provide two unique spaces for library and community meetings and
events in that building, which is part of Governors’ Row on the riverfront. Support for the project will be sought through a capital campaign that will commence in the coming months. The project will allow the library to achieve, at a reasonable cost, its goal of relocating administrative staff to allow for service expansion downtown. The property was acquired debt-free, and the library plans to complete the project through the capital campaign. The $295,000 purchase was made possible in part by endowment income from funds that are specified for sustaining McCormick Riverfront Library and providing for general library operations. Support of the project is growing quickly. The S. Wilson and Grace M. Pollock Foundation has indicated its interest in helping to fund the expansion of children’s and family services via the project. St. Stephen’s Episcopal School has expressed interest in the prospect of STEM and arts programming becoming available to its students so close to its facility, and the library hopes that the project can also provide learning support for the students of the Harrisburg School District, SciTech High School, and other surrounding schools. Historic Harrisburg has also indicated its enthusiasm for the project and what it will bring to the city. To learn more, readers may visit www.dcls.org.
