Raising Hope For Survivors

For many cancer patients, the goal is to “ring the bell,” marking the end of treatment. As Kim Ramirez knows, however, survivors often incur extensive costs associated with after-cancer care. To remedy the problem, Ramirez formed Ta Ta Rebels Inc., a nonprofit that focuses on supporting breast-cancer survivors like herself. “We reached our five-year milestone last year,” Ramirez said of the organization. “That in itself confirms that what we do is very much needed in the survivor community. Once you ring

An array of other youth projects were also included in the event, such as expressive arts projects.

that bell, you are no longer eligible for resources received during treatment. The ongoing cost of follow-up scans, durable medical equipment (DME) and therapies continues well after ringing the bell.”

To help raise funds for the cause, the nonprofit will hold the sixth annual Survivors Raise Hope event. The fundraiser will include a motorcycle ride from the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., to the Middletown Anglers and Hunters, 1350 Schoolhouse Road. It will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1, with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. The ride will kick off at 11:15 a.m., followed by festivities at the Middletown location beginning at noon.

“There will be breakfast sandwiches, coffee and soda available during registration,” Ramirez stated. “The Elizabethtown Fire Police will

assist our ride out of town and again at Cloverleaf and Route 230. The Linglestown Legion Riders will escort the ride to ensure a safe ride.”

Participation in the ride is not required to attend the event held in the outside pavilion at the Middletown Anglers and Hunters. “We will have pulled pork sandwiches provided by One Love Café, chips provided by Martin’s Snacks, cookies from the Mount Joy Sheetz, macaroni salad provided by Mount Joy Weis Markets, Turkey Hill teas, water and, of course, the famous chicken corn soup made by one of our volunteers, Linda Geib,” Ramirez remarked. The event will also feature a variety of giveaways, bingo, a bean bag toss and merchandise available for purchase.

Three speakers will be featured at the event. “This year’s discussion will cover the choices/options given after a breast cancer diagnosis,” Ramirez said. “Barbara Fox from Confidence Inked

will discuss how to camouflage the surgery scar. Bridget Grant from Inkcredible Outcomes will discuss the options of areola tattooing after reconstruction. Jennifer Krein is a breast cancer survivor that will share her breast cancer journey with everyone. These discussions are to raise survivorship awareness as we are the rest of the story.”

The Survivors Raise Hope event is the organization’s biggest annual fundraiser, and proceeds will help breast cancer survivors with ongoing out-of-pocket medical expenses, Ramirez noted.

“This helps with co-pays, deductibles, DME such as prosthesis, mastectomy bras and compression sleeves,” she said. “We also provide a scar tissue therapy that helps with regaining your range of motion after surgery.”

St. Joan of Arc School, or SJA, as it is known to the families whose children attend, had its beginnings in September 1927 on Chocolate Avenue when four members of the Daughters of Mercy came to live at the newly completed convent to provide religious education to families. The Daughters of Mercy were an international religious congregation founded in Savona, Italy, in 1837 by St. Mary Joseph Rossello; the congregation was headquartered in Newfield, N.J.

Enrollment grew at SJA, and on Nov. 23, 1947, the school broke ground for a new facility on what is now West Areba Avenue. Nine Daughters of Mercy organized their classes with 225 children, more than doubling the previous year’s enrollment of 90 children. In 1953, the school was expanded with the addition of four new classrooms.

SJA continued to expand, and in December 2019, papers were signed to purchase the former Lancaster Mennonite School Hershey Campus for use in the 2020-21 school year. The new school sits on 36 acres of land at 1525 Sand

Hill Road, Hummelstown, and has more than 500 students. St. Joan of Arc School is currently the largest Catholic school in the Diocese of Harrisburg and welcomed the 2022-23 school year with the newly completed third-floor middle school area due largely to the school’s donors and the vision of the Rev. Al Sceski.

The school has received recognition for its excellence in education, earning the Middle States accreditation in 2015, the National Blue Ribbon accreditation in 2016, and STEM accreditation in 2019. In 2022, SJA principal Sister Eileen McGowan was recognized by the National Catholic Educational Association for her outstanding work in Catholic school education and faith formation.

Vickie’s Angel Walk Planned

The Vickie’s Angel Foundation (VAF) will hold a Vickie’s Angel Walk on Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Friendship YMCA, formerly the Friendship Center, located at 5000 Commons Drive, Harrisburg. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The program will start at 8:45 a.m., and the walk will step off at 9:30 a.m., rain or shine. There will be food, music and giveaway drawings.

For the past 19 years, the Angel Walk, which is VAF’s major fundraising event, has been held at Borough Park in New Cumberland. This year,

VAF is expanding to include a satellite location in Dauphin County, which is the largest county the organization serves. The two walks will be held simultaneously.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Vickie’s Angel Foundation (VAF), which was founded by Mickey Minnich in honor of his wife, Vickie, whom he lost to cancer in 2002. Based in New Cumberland, VAF focuses on providing financial assistance for local families fighting cancer. VAF directly pays mortgages, rents, utilities and more to help ease the financial burden and allow the recipient to concentrate more on his or her treatment and healing. Presentation To Focus On 17th Airborne Division

The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 433 E. Main St., Hummelstown.

The speaker, David Shortt

of Germantown, Ohio, is the historian of the 17th Airborne Division SCIONS Association and has studied the division’s history for over 40 years. He will be joined by World War II 17th Airborne paratrooper Richard Weaver, 98, from

Gettsyburg.

During World War II, the 17th Airborne Division earned more Medals of Honor than any other airborne division and sustained casualties nearly double the daily combat average of the other airborne divisions. In the Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge, the troopers of the 17th entered combat in waisthigh snow with poor intelligence and inadequate artillery support, facing two German panzer armies in a bloody combat on a narrow, high-

rimmed road known as Dead Man’s Ridge. In early March 1945, the division participated in Operation Varsity, the last airborne operation of the war, executing a daylight jump into the Ruhr heartland, across the Rhine River.

Shortt served in the U.S. Army from 1979 to 2004, following in the footsteps of many family members, who included a 17th Airborne Division paratrooper. He holds a Bachelor of Science from New York University and is curator of the Veterans Memorial Museum Foundation of Germantown, Ohio. Weaver will share his account of his World War II service.

The meeting is open to the public, and no registration is required. Additional information can be found at www.centralpaww2roundtable.org.

The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable is a nonprofit organization that provides a forum for World War II veterans, authors, historians, and citizens to share their knowledge and experiences related to the war.

VAF serves nine counties in central Pennsylvania and has raised more than $4 million dollars for families in need. All donations are tax-deductible to this 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Among those who have received help from VAF is Becky Firestone of Palmyra. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in April, Firestone had to take an unpaid leave of absence from her job and found herself in financial need. At a friend’s

The homecoming alumni dinner will begin at 6 p.m. on

ECS Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony

ECS, a commercial cleaning service in the Mid-Atlantic area, will move its offices from Annville to the Flightpath Sports Park, where it purchased six acres in May.

The new corporate support center, which broke ground in September, will have 22,000 square feet of space and open in the summer of 2023. The

pre-engineered steel building from American Buildings has been custom designed inhouse by the HR Weaver team and will feature 17 offices, two conference rooms and a large, open work area. In addition, a welcome center is planned with a large, glass curtain wall to entice visitors, vendors and clients to come inside.
